CraftLit - Serialized Classic Literature for Busy Book Lovers

Ep. 681: Cranford | Chapter 3 Book talk begins at 15:00 A mysterious gentleman caller? A missed dinner invite gone socially sideways? Things are getting awkwardly entertaining in the most delightfully proper way. --------------------------------------------------------------- 00:00 Episode start 03:00 Knitting Comfortably: The ergonomics of knitting by Carson Demers “Wuv. To the displeasure of many a maiden, its enjoyment is short lived. Once satisfied, it ceases to exist, and always costs dearly. Another moral: Apply logic to this grim story, and you will ascertain that it took place many years ago. No husband of our age would be so terrible as to demand the impossible of his wife, nor would he be such a jealous malcontent. For, whatever the color of her husband's beard, the wife of today will let him know who the master is. (Heather's note: I just had to add those here as I found them after I recorded) Andrew Lang, The Blue Fairy Book (London: Longmans, Green, and Company, ca. 1889), pp. 290-295. Beverages: Beverages, such as water and wine, are poured from the right, as glasses are typically placed to the right of the guest's plate. Sides: Sides like bread and vegetables are also served from the left. Clearing: Plates: Plates are cleared from the right, using your right hand to remove the plate.  Exceptions: If a guest is obstructing the way on the right, or if there is an object on the right side, a server may need to serve from the right.  Some restaurants may have their own protocols for serving, whether it's to the right or left.  Why Serve from the Left? Serving from the left is considered less intrusive for right-handed diners, as it avoids the server having to reach across the guest.  It also allows the server to carry the food in their left hand and serve with their right hand, without crossing their arms in front of the guest. 57:20   *CraftLit's Socials* • Find everything here: https://www.linktr.ee/craftlitchannel • Join the newsletter: http://eepurl.com/2raf9  • Podcast site: http://craftlit.com • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CraftLit/ • Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/craftlit • Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/craftlit/ • TikTok podcast: https://www.tiktok.com/@craftlit • Email: heather@craftlit.com • Previous CraftLit Classics can be found here: https://bit.ly/craftlit-library-2023   *SUPPORT THE SHOW!* • CraftLit App Premium feed bit.ly/libsynpremiumcraftlit (only one tier available) • PATREON:   https://patreon.com/craftlit (all tiers, below) ——Walter Harright -  $5/mo for the same audio as on App ——Jane Eyre - $10/mo for even-month Book Parties ——Mina Harker - $15/mo for odd-month Watch Parties *All tiers and benefits are also available as* —*YouTube Channel Memberships*  —*Ko-Fi* https://ko-fi.com/craftlit  —*NEW* at CraftLit.com — Premium Memberships https://craftlit.com/membership-levels/ *IF you want to join a particular Book or Watch Patry but you don't want to join any of the above membership options*, please use PayPal.me/craftlit or CraftLit @ Venmo and include what you want to attend in the message field. Explore Your Enthusiasm, with Tara Swiger | Craft | Art | Business

I LOVE podcasts. They are the absolute perfect way to learn or be entertained while you do boring or mundane stuff. I listen to quite a few podcasts and I'm always recommending specific episodes to friends. Today I want to share my favorite with you!  I'll cover my favorite podcasts for your business, for parenting (especially fostering and adopting), and just general fun stuff. This week I'm sharing some of my favorite podcasts. I have been listening to podcasts since 2006! My husband bought me an ipod shuffle (no screen!) for Valentine's Day in 2006 because I was listening to podcasts on my computer (we only had a desktop, no laptop, and obviously we only had flip phones. FLIP PHONES!). Those first podcasts I loved (you can still go back and listen!) - KnitCast, which may have been the first podcast about knitting, CastOn with Brenda Dayne, which inspired the direction of my yarn company, and CraftyPod with Diane Gilleland, who I stalked on Twitter until we became real-life friends and collaborators. (I took her class on podcast years before I started this show and anything good in this podcast I learned from her.) The landscape of podcasting has changed QUITE a bit since 2006! For starters, you likely know what they are now, and you probably didn't back then. Many of you don’t even listening Explore Your Enthusiasm as an audio podcast, you watch it on YouTube. When I first started this show back in 2014, I had to explain to interested students what podcasts were and how to actually get them. If you are reading this, did you know you can get it delivered to your phone automatically? If you have an iphone, just go to the Podcast app, search for "explore your enthusiasm" and hit the "subscribe" button! It'll come to your phone every Wednesday morning. If you use a different phone, look in your app store for a podcast app, and subscribe in the same way. Before we get into my faves, let's talk about listening to podcasts for a minute - there are some podcasts I listen to every week, but MOST shows, I tend to save up and then binge on. I may spend a whole week listening to one show, and then not listen again for a month. I may completely forget about a show for 3 months, and then it becomes one of my favorites. So when I recommend these shows, I'm not just recommending the most recent episodes, I'm recommending them overall, because I've learned something from them over the years. And now that I've told you how I listen to podcasts, you don't need to apologize to ME for not hearing my most recent episode, when you meet me in person or send me a DM I get it! And if you want to hear MY best podcast episodes, check out the episode 234! In it I share the most popular episodes and you can find them linked up at the show notes: https://taraswiger.com/podcast234/ My favorite podcasts for your biz: I'll be honest, I don't listen to a lot of business podcasts regularly, because I find they distract me from what I need to be working on! I don't need more ideas, I just need to do the work! However, when I do need ideas or inspiration, I listen to these: Hashtag Authentic - I met Sarah Tasker when she was a student in my Craft Your Marketing workshop in Manchester, England. And then I was blown away when I realized that she is an Instagram superstar and writes an amazing blog. Her podcast Hashtag Authentic is SO good and has amazing interviews with people you don't hear anywhere else. And! Her book Hashtag Authentic just came out and is the best thing ever. The Goal Digger Podcast - Jenna Kutcher, who has a giant business and started out as a photographer and went viral on Instagram, shares some amazing lessons in this show. She switches between teaching episodes (kinda like my show usually is) with interviews with a really random collection of people. To be honest, I usually skip the interviews because she's had some reality stars on which is...odd, but also some great conversations about diversity in the Instagram world. I tend to pick and choose. My favorite episodes have been about concrete topics like growing Instagram or Pinterest. Online Marketing Made Easy with Amy Porterfield - I haven't listened to this show in about a year because I would end up taking copious notes on each episode and learning so much...and I've been in a place of implementing (and healing!), instead of learning. But when I need to uplevel some aspect of my business, I search her archives and listen to the episodes that relate to what I need. That said, a few years ago I listened every single week and  acted on so much of what she taught I think it directly correlated to my business hitting six figures. (No, I haven't taken her classes, but they look great!) Hol:Fit Talks - Ange Petersen has a multimillion dollar business and is one of the top sellers in doTERRA and she believes it is all about mindset. Her episodes are so encouraging and enlightening, no matter what business you're in. All Rise Up with Allison Nichols - If you have doTERRA business, you need to be listening to this podcast. I am telling you that it is REQUIRED listening. If you have a different business, you're going to love her interviews and learn a lot about how to be a bold salesperson. Allison is another of the top sellers in doTERRA and I love how unapologetic she is about her ambition and how hard you need to work. Honorable Mention:  I used to listen to both The Tim Ferriss Show and School of Greatness weekly, but I haven't listened in a few years. I became tired of the interview format. The School of Greatness, does have a more diverse line-up (Tim's show tends to be all white dudes who have giant business, many of which are "intellectual dark web" people). I also have listened to and loved The Life Coach School show, Sounds Like Bliss, Manifestation Babe. There are two mental health related podcasts that I think are just great: Jen Gotch is Ok… Sometimes - The first several episodes are required listening if you think you may be dealing with mental health issues. Jen Gotch is the founder of Band.Do, which means she's a super smart businesswoman...and she has bipolar disorder and anxiety disorder. Hearing her story in the first few episodes was really what I needed this summer. The Hilarious World of Depression - This is the podcast I didn't know I needed. Each week the host interviews a different funny person and they talk about their experience with depression, how they got treatment and what works for them. It is always heartwarming and sometimes heartbreaking and is what you need if you feel alone. Honorable Mention: Oprah's Supersoul Conversation. I don't think it needs an explanation. It's Oprah and some great guests and some kooky guests. Parenting podcasts: Real Mom Podcast - a foster and adoptive mom interviews moms from all backgrounds and although this show is aimed at Christian moms, I think all moms can relate to the stories shared and the real conversations. Slate's Mom and Dad are Fighting - this is a panel show with 3 parents who answer listener questions and share their own "triumphs and fails" each week. Sometimes they talk about older kids, sometimes toddlers, I always enjoy it and usually listen while washing dishes. The Empowered Parent Podcast - this is usually a conversation with two parents and is based on the concepts in Karyn Purvis' work and the Connect Child book. If you are parenting a kid with trauma or you're feeling disconnected, there's lots of good foundational stuff with examples in this show (I mostly download old shows and listen about a specific topic, like tantrums, or reunification) Honorable Mention: The Adoption Connection. Random podcasts that got me through hard times: By the Book - In this podcast two friends read and live by a self-help book for 2 weeks. They choose different kinds of books and share the results. This is a professionally produced show and yet manages to be hilarious and warm, like listening to two friends. When I'm traveling and can't sleep, I sometimes put this on with the sleep timer and I drift off. (Not because it's boring but because I need some friends around) Dear Hank And John - John Green (author of Fault in Our Stars and a million other very good novels) and his brother Hank Green (author of An Absolutely Remarkable Thing and the creator and business brains of tons of huge YouTube things, like Crash Course) have a weekly YT show called VlogBrothers, which is one of the first vlog-type things I ever watched. Now they have a podcast where they give dubious advice to listener's questions and it is always hilarious and uplifting. This is one I listen to every week within a few days of it coming out, often when I'm in the car with my foster kiddos. Honorable Mention: I was listening to Layla Saad's Wild Mystic Woman podcast for conversations about anti-racist work, but she recently changed it up and has the new Good Ancestor Podcast which I just downloaded. There are a lot of other shows I listen to now and again, all of these have been listened to recently: Nerdette, Slate's The Waves, Decoder Ring, Reading Glasses, Reply All, NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour, Beautiful Writers Podcast, Rants and Randomness with Luvvie, NPR's Code Switch. Now that I've put all these shows in one place I can see some things I'd like to change about my own habits - I'm glad to see I am listening to a lot of shows by women, which is something I purposefully sought to change a few years ago. But I recognize that among those women there isn't a lot of diversity. This year I'd like to change that a bit, so I'm  listening to and learning from people who are different from me.   Listen in at TaraSwiger.com/podcast248

Now that we’re a few weeks into 2016 we’re curious as to how you’re all doing with your resolutions or goals for this year. We’ve also been doing some thinking about our own plans for Yarn in the City this year and had our own thoughts that we wanted to share with you.  Shout outs:  C. C. from the Geeky Girls Podcast. The Dublin Brooks Hotel Knit Night, who introduced Alli to the beers of Galway Hooker. Best. Brewery. Name. Ever. What’s Happening:  30th January - Renée Callahan of East London Knit will be teaching Brioche Basics and Brioche Next Steps classes at A Yarn Story in Bath. 30th January - Woolly Wormhead is teaching two classes at Knit With Attitude, a Knitting in the Round Masterclass and her Turning Sideways class. 31st January - there is a Learn to Darn class happening at Wild & Woolly. Participants are encouraged to bring a woolen garment that needs mending and will learn both invisible and decorative techniques by a professional Japanese clothes mender.  4th-7th February – the annual French stitching show L’Aiguille en Fete takes place at the Porte de Versailles in Paris. This show is jammed with all kinds of inspiration! 5th – 7th February – Purlescence is hosting a weekender featuring the KNITSONIK Colourwork and Bespoke Yokes workshops with our good friends Felicity Ford and Brenda Dayne. If you missed Gwlana last fall, Felicity and Brenda are cramming their classes into two full days (and a Friday evening kick off) at Purlescence’s new location in Oxfordshire.   6th - 7th February – Rachel is teaching an Introduction to Drop Spindling and How to Knit a Sexy Sweater class at A Yarn Story.  10th February – It’s the next Late Night Knitty Lock-in of 2016 over at Wild & Woolly. Check out the details on their website.  13th - 14th February – Cécile Balladino is teaching her Eclectic Gipsyland crochet class at Loop. These are the same class but offered on two different days. The class will teach Cécile’s techniques for lace motifs, joining as you go, surface crochet and more. This is not a beginner’s class and you will be expected to already know how to crochet.  20th February – For those of you up north, Karie Westermann is teaching her Two-Handed Colourwork for Fair Isle and Nordic Style Colourwork class at Be Inspired Fibres in Edinburgh.   19th - 21st February – Unravel is happening at Farnham Maltings. We will be there with two stands – a joint Porpoise Fur/Yarn in the City stand where we will be debuting the London Craft Guide! We’ve just found out that our stand will be located in the Barley Room, so we do hope you’ll come and say hello!  26th - 28th February – Joeli’s Kitchen Retreat in Manchester. Featuring classes with Kate Atherley, Karie Westermann, Joeli and other great teachers, as well as a mini marketplace on the Sunday that will include Countess Ablaze.  Giveaway: Speaking of Unravel – we still have a pair of tickets to giveaway. To enter, leave a comment in the show notes for Episode 28 and let us know what you’re looking forward to seeing at the show. We’ll draw a name on February 1st and announce the winner on the first podcast episode in February. Contest note: this pair of tickets is for a single day’s entry to the show and does not include any travel to Farnham. Good luck!  Save the Date! We’ve finally figured out the date for this year’s Great London Yarn Crawl, which will be held on Saturday, 10th September. Mark the date in your calendars now and stay tuned for more details this spring!  What we’re working on: Rachel is working on a sample of the Waterloo Mitts, our pattern from the London Craft Guide, in Eden Cottage Yarns Whitfeld DK. She is also working up her Knit a Sexy Sweater class sample by knitting the Middlefield Pullover by Melissa LaBarre from New England Knits, in Elann Peruvian Highland Chunky. She's finished knitting her Dark & Stormy, but the buttons and grosgrain ribbon are still to be done. She's finished spinning for the first Unravel hat and is almost ready to cast on. The first stage of the project is in her Design Diaries segment on her blog. Allison has her first FO of 2016 off the needles – the Quaking Aspen shawl by Courtney Kelley. She’s also finished spinning some Porpoise Fur handspun from the Lab Goddess Fibre Club and is working it up into the Grown Up Booties by Ysolda. She is also almost finished with her She’s a Waterfall shawl by Dani Sunshine.  2016 - The Do-Over: After last episode’s chat about themes for the year and having a focus for this year, we decided that we wanted to come up for one for our year. There are already lot’s of things out about being creative this year, all of which are great. But we were wondering if there was something we could do that would tie in to what Yarn in the City is all about. We also wanted it to be something that anyone could take part in, no matter how big or small, and in whatever way felt right and personal to them.  We’ve been inspired by Calgary, Canada’s mayor Naheed Nenshi, who challenged his council and the citizens of Calgary to do Three Things for their community as a way to increase civic engagement (an overview here). The idea was simple: if there are over a million people in the city of Calgary and every person did three things to make the city better –image how amazing an already great city would be.  When we were thinking about what we wanted to focus on in 2016 we looked back to the things and themes that resonated with us last year. And they were stories of people within our yarn and fibre community doing great stuff that makes it better for everyone. Whether it’s people who are spreading the passion of wool like the Wovember team, or podcasters likeShinybees and Curious Handmade, who demonstrate than knitting podcasts can build community, or show organisers like Jo and Mica who saw a void in their own community and created the Edinburgh Yarn Festival to fill it.  As a community we’re sharing knowledge and learning from each other and asking questions. So this year we want to encourage you to do three things for the world wide yarn and fibre community. Think about what is important to you. Think about what you’re good at. Talk to your friends and figure out how you can make a difference, however small.  Then we’d like you to do those things, and tell us about them on a dedicated Three Things for the yarn and fibre community thread on our Ravelry board, or on our Facebook page. You can even tweet or Instagram at us. Use the hashtag#3thingsforyarnlove so we can see what you're up to and cheer you on! And once you've done three things, do three more, and three more, and three more... As always, please let us know what you think by tweeting, liking, or loving our posts when you see them go up on Twitter,Facebook and Instagram – or even better, leave a comment in the shownotes, post on our Ravelry board or send us an email at hello@yarninthecity.com.  You can find us on iTunes or Stitcher Radio (and please consider leaving a review for us!), or download us directly from the Yarn in the City website.   Our Knit Night is every Wednesday from 7:00pm to 10:00pm at The Goat on the Rise in Clapham Junction. Shout outs: Thanks to Deb, who applauded our musical choices, and asked how we pick the songs, so we go on at length about that. Many congratulations to Catherine, our guest on Episode 8, who welcomed her new granddaughter last week! And a shout out from us to the people in our lives (in the knitting world and outside) who are having a bit of a hard time right now - we're thinking of you all. What's going on: 15-16th May: I Knit Fandango, Royal Horticultural Halls, London. We will be there at the Porpoise Fur booth - come say hi! 15-17th May: Gwlana, a knitting retreat in Pembrokeshire, Wales with Brenda Dayne of Cast On and Felicity Ford of Knitsonik. 16-17th May: John Arbon Open Weekend, South Molton, Devon. 23rd May: Highland Wool Festival, Dingwall Mart. 25th May: The Shipston on Stour Wool Fair, Shipston on Stour, South Warwickshire 30-31st May: Proper Woolley, Holsworthy, Devon. 20 June: the Brighton Knit and Make Social - come down to the beach with us for a day of hanging out and relaxing! What we're working on: Allison is working on a Big Brother Sweater for a newly-minted big brother, and she's going to be test knitting a cowl for Rachel in Kettle Yarn Co's new Islington DK as soon as Rachel gets a move on and writes up the pattern. She's started a new scarf with some YFP Shetland handspun (leftovers from Rachel's Nymphalidea) and a gorgeous grey DK out of stash. Cleaning up the office netted her some un-catalogued stash hiding away, so she's updated that. She's also been spinning and getting excited about Susan Anderson's book The Spinner's Book of Yarn Designs. Rachel has been dyeing. And dyeing. And dyeing some more. She's also knit up the KYC Cowl prototype (will be released at the end of June), and has done a bit of spindling on her Massive Spindle Sweaterlot. Because spindle spinning a sweater's worth of yarn is a good idea. Really. But mostly she's been dyeing. Upcoming excitement: Our special feature this week is all about upcoming events, specifically I Knit Fandango and our next Yarn in the City event - a mini-crawl in Brighton on 20 June. We highlight vendors we're looking forward to seeing at the Fandango, and talk a bit about what will be on the Porpoise Fur stand. We also chat about the Brighton trip, and the shops involved. This is going to be a very mellow and low-key event, and we really hope you can join us! Tickets are available now.   As always you can find us on Ravelry, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. Please don't hesitate to share your thoughts and feedback with us, and please come say hi at any of the events we're attending if you get a chance! We will be collecting again for Refuge this year, so please bring any and all charity items to the kick off party at the Yarn in the City Pop Up Marketplace on 5th September. We also recently learned about AYME (the Association of Young People with ME), an organization that supports the estimated 25,000 children and young people in the UK who suffer from myalgic enchephalomyelitis, also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. AYME is launching an awareness campaign called "Knit a Tulip for ME", with a goal of collecting one knitted tulip for every ME-affected young person in the UK in 2015. So far, they've collected 5,000 woolen tulips, and they are holding an official launch on 14th May at the Double Tree by Hilton London - Chelsea with a display of some of the tulips already contributed. The campaign also has a Justgiving page, if you'd like to make a donation. You can also email Jackie (scroll down for the email address) for the pattern and a sponsorship form. There are a number of other charity knitting opportunities out there, including Knit for Peace, which supports people in India, Pakistan and Rwanda. Allison is working on the Beeswax Hat by Amy van de Laar, in some gorgeous new Plump DK from Mrs. Moon,  and the Helix Cable Vest by Shiri Mor. She finished her Garter Squish Blanket (to the tune of +2000 yds out of stash!), and her sheep have mostly stayed cold, although she did get some gorgeous fabric at the Knitting & Stitching Show at Olympia.Rachel is almost done with Latticewing Version 3 (to be released soon!), worked in some lovely (green) Canopy Fingering from The Fibre Company. Her Windmill Bay Stole is almost through the middle lace section, and she's finished a woven handspun scarf (with Hello Yarn Fiber Club yarn, of course). She's been distracted from finishing things by her new Christmas toy, courtesy of her wonderful mother: a Classic Carder. Card all the things!!!!Cold Sheep Update:We've been pretty good at our cold sheep efforts, although Rachel was struck by a bolt of inspiration which resulted in a Baa Ram Ewe order (she needed the proper colour of a particular yarn!). However, we have agreed that "work" stash (for designing or samples) is quite separate from "personal" stash, so she has been given a pass for the moment. We also did a bit of swapping at The Muse Connection Volume 1, put on by A Playful Day and Curious Handmade. Alli's offering wasn't snatched up, so she gifted it to a friend to make up for the skein she selected at the swap. Rachel left two skeins and brought home two skeins, but ended up with more yardage then she swapped out. Hmmmm....Also a bit about our Yarn in the City 10K team (details here). Come run with us!Crazy about Colour! As we get closer and closer to the KNITSONIK Quotidian Colourwork class at the end of the month, excitement is building to play with ALL THE COLOURS OF WOOL! She cast on for her Insight Pullover, and is almost finished with a handspun Now in a Minute by Brenda Dayne that is her Bath Road Trip scarf, worked in some Hello Yarn Fiber Club Finn that was spun up for the Tour de Fleece 2013. Spinning-wise, she's spun up 4 oz of Polworth/silk singles from Hello Yarn, plied the first of Alli's Christmas 2013 skeins, and done a bit more Targhee spindling here and there. Now in a Minute in progress. Allison has picked up her Selbu Modern Beret and is going full speed ahead with the addition of some Addi Sock Rocket needles which are making her life much easier (good tools y'all...). She's put the Mitini Mitts aside for a bit to consider the yarn/pattern combination, and is working on some superwash BFL from Sweet Georgia Yarns for her spinning.New Book Reviews:We review two books in this episode. First up, Rachel waxes rhapsodic about Felicity Ford's Knitsonik Colourwork Sourcebook, which gives you a complete system for generating colorwork knitting patterns from everyday objects. (And which basically supports Rachel's long-held belief that swatching is the best thing in the entire world - a belief Allison strongly objects to). Then we both discuss Cirilia Rose's brand new book, Magpies, Homebodies and Nomads, with much oooing and aaahing and pre-processing. We particularly like the Isla Cardigan, the Reyka Pullover, the Loro Vest, the Heima Slippers, and the Jordaan Cape. This episode has a clean label because I managed not to swear in my stream of consciousness, except one occasion which I edited out. I am lying on my bed recording this, but don’t be dismayed (unless you’re the type who think that the word ‘lesbian’ automatically means explicit, in which case why are you here?). This is a stream of consciousness of my past year and year to come, including writing, PhD and knitting, and where they intertwine. I mention the QN podcast episode which featured me: Small Green Island, which you can listen to by following this link: http://quirkynomads.com/wp/2010/12/27/childhood-walk-small-green-island/. I also mention the fabulous Craftlit with Heather Ordover and Cast On with Brenda Dayne, yarns from King Becky, my Black Cat Pawprint socks, the subversive socks for my son and my keysock, an innovation in keeping the key on the keyring. More photos in the Casting Pods shownotes at www.castingpods.co.uk, where you can also find archived shownotes for previous episodes. Happy New Year everyone. I hope this year is all you wish it to be.

“Hudden and Dudden and Donald O’Neary” is an Irish folktale collected and published by folklorist Joseph Jacobs in his book, Celtic Fairy Tales. Social Darwinism explained. Sarah McLachlan is a singer/songwriter who wrote and performs “Adia” (lyrics), in which she expresses a theory of justice and individual responsibility that I refer to in this podcast. Paolo Freire is a theorist and activist whose ideas include many ways we as individuals and groups can act to create a more just world. His book, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, is relevant, especially Chapter Two. With regard to being our own angels: I find a short passage from the epilogue to John Fletcher’s play, The Honest Man’s Fortune, to be provocative (in a good way): Man is his own star, and the soul that can Render an honest and a perfect man Commands all light, all influence, all fate, Nothing to him falls early or too late. Our acts our angels are, or good or ill, Our fatal shadows that stand by us still. It is perhaps good to note that “perfect” can also mean “whole,” “complete,” or “fully mature,” and that “fatal” here means “fate-al,” or “determining one’s destiny.” I first came across this poem in Louisa May Alcott’s book, Rose in Bloom. There, it is cited as a joint work of both Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher (both men are contemporaries of Shakespeare). This article explains why. Joseph Fielding Smith said, “It is contrary to the law of God for the heavens to be opened and messengers to come to do anything for man that man can do for himself. . . . You cannot point to anywhere in the scriptures where a messenger has come from the heavens and bestowed upon man something man could do for himself, but angels have come and told men what to do and sent men to do it.” (Doctrines of Salvation, 3 vols., comp. Bruce R. McConkie, Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1954–57, 1:196.) Nicky Epstein wrote Knitting on Top of the World: The Global Guide to Traditions, Techniques and Design. Michele Rose Orne wrote Inspired to Knit: Creating Exquisite Handknits. Brenda Dayne writes, produces, and performs an excellent knitting and philosophy podcast (combining knitting and philosophy in one, not one and then the other) called Cast On. She has been selected to participate in the plinth art project in London’s Trafalgar Square in mid-September. Brenda is an American living in Wales, so you Britophiles especially will like hearing about Brenda’s life. Erin, or Spinnerin, produced and performed a podcast called Faery Knitting until early this year. The episodes are still available – each one starts with a fairy or folk tale in the public domain and then continues with brief (but very enjoyable) critical commentary on the tale, as well as lots of interesting tidbits about Erin’s life as a fiber producer and small farmer in Texas. If you can’t get the last episode to download (as I have been unable to do), you might contact Erin on Ravelry (her ID is Spinnerin) and pester her for it. I plan to do exactly that as soon as I get to the end of the episodes I have. Both these podcasts are available through iTunes. The Green Man performed “The Shiny Penny.” This song is included according to a Creative Commons Music Sharing license. You can legally download this whole song yourself and listen to it for free, as well as more of their work. Cat Jahnke wrote and performed “Tangle” and “Crocodiles.” These songs are included by permission in this podcast and are not licensed for random sharing. You can buy her CD though, which I swear is totally worth it. And maybe get one of those great crocodile T-shirts as well.

Announcements: New equipment! Now we should sound as dulcet as Brenda Dayne. (Please send us any feedback you have about the sound.) Marly (from the Yarn Thing Podcast) and Sydney (from the Knaked Knits Podcast) are hosting the Holiday KAL-CAL. (Last year's Holiday KAL-CAL podcast can be found here.) Changelings Knit and Stitch - Go and listen! On The Needles: Gigi is still working on her Zig Zag Slip Stitch socks from the Little Box of Socks Jasmin has finished her first Day-Glo sock (which is the same yarn as Gigi's contrast color for her ZZSS Socks), and started the second sock. The Social Pressure Experiment is going well. In addition to the 25 lbs of yarn that Jasmin got rid of last weekend, she's purged another 3 big bags. Tika finished her Elphaba Knee Socks, and got wine when we went to Unwined to listen to Juanita sing with the Jack Conway Trio. Gigi has been purging knitting bags. Jasmin likes her good bags (like the Amy Butler bag, or the Tom Bihn bag - especially the sock baggie), but noticed that she's always using the canvas bags from individual vendors. Gigi wants to hear from you: what makes an optimal knitting bag. Jasmin's Lily of the Valley shawl caught on the velcro in her work bag. Jasmin is a little over halfway done with spinning the yarn for her rainbow socks. Mother Knows Best: Our friend, Ursula is knitting her husband a sweater with a bunch of texture, and was unsure as to whether the neck decreases would work out correctly. The solution? A neck swatch! To do a neck swatch: Figure out the total number of neck decreases. Add a few stitches to that. Follow directions for neck decreases. It really works. When Knitting Attacks: Technology attacked, and the end result? New recording equipment for the podcast. Gigi cast on a sock out of the Tess' Yarns sock yarn (which Gigi and Jasmin both loooove!), and neglected to swatch. The sock was eeeensy weensy! Jasmin should not do math for a Cat Bordhi sock at 11PM. When will I ever learn?! Thanks! Your donations help the podcast run, so thanks a MILLION! Contest: The Cat Bordhi knitting joke & limerick contest deadline has been extended to Friday, November 7th.  Send us your limericks and jokes! A limerick looks like this: We host a knitting podcast, Which normally is a real blast. When technology fails, Jasmin weeps and she wails, With Gigi watching nearby, aghast.

CrochetCast - An Introduction ( click to listen)Oh my gosh. Well, I guess I've gone and done it again -- jumped in and started a new venture. Pretty much spur of the moment (so what else is new?), I've decided to start a crochet podcast since there seem to be none out there (according to Brenda Dayne's most recent episode of Cast-On). And well, we just can't have that.Since I really have no idea what I'm doing with the techie side of podcasting, I pray you'll forgive me for being the amatuer that I am and for all audio imperfections. I promise to try to learn the software associated with audio editing and the like prior to the next episode. Please let me know what you'd like to hear in this podcast. Music? Yes or no? And if so, what kind? What kind of "stuff" do you want to hear while you crochet? Do you like interviews? Essays? Knock-knock jokes?
