In today's episode of the Brains Byte Back podcast, we speak with Joe Ferraro, Vice President of Revenue at Hypothesis, a company striving to implement a conversation layer over the entire web that works everywhere, without needing implementation by any underlying site. Ferraro kicks off the show by sharing how the goal of the company is to enable discussions and collaboration on various topics, similar to commenting in Google Docs but applicable to the entire web. He opens up about how this initially began as an idea in 2011 when the founder and CEO, Dan Whaley, identified a need to address misinformation on the web. Ferraro shares how Whaley came up with the concept to facilitate conversations on source data, such as articles or research studies, to promote nuanced discussions and different perspectives. The project underwent several years of development and standardization efforts, leading to the launch of Hypothesis in 2019. Additionally, Ferraro explains the origins of the name, advocating that it signifies the exploration of theories and the importance of bringing facts and conversations to the forefront. He also goes on to add that the site's creative URL (hypothes.is) is both a domain hack and a nod to Iceland's progressive approach to freedom of speech and information. Following this, Ferraro shares how Hypothesis is making a difference in the education space. He states that Hypothesis initially gained traction in the education sector, with millions of university students using the tool for collaborative reading and discussions. He also argues that students have embraced the ability to collaborate beyond traditional discussion boards, and the aim is to help them transition seamlessly into the workplace. And finally, Ferraro wraps up the show by sharing how the company has recently entered the enterprise space, where the goal is to enable more efficient collaboration within organizations and relieve the administrative burden of using multiple tools. Today's episode of the podcast is a little bit different. Today, I'm going to be interviewed by Joe Ferraro. If you're unfamiliar with Joe, he has an incredible podcast called One Percent Better, he is someone who practices what he preaches, and he has had over 200 episodes where he's interviewed best-selling authors, CEO's, and all kinds of different people and leaders, to try and figure out how they're getting one percent better every single day. Joe is way more than simply a host, though. He's a high school teacher, he has a history coaching baseball, and he coaches people today on how they can communicate better. He is someone who thinks deeply about how to have, what he calls, damn good conversations. Currently, he's working one-on-one with a variety of people to help them with different projects that they're doing, whether it's their podcast, or a TED Talk, or helping them become a better public speaker, Joe is my go-to person for whenever I'm looking for advice, expertise, and coaching when it comes to my ability to communicate. He thinks about conversations all the time, he thinks about how we can improve them, and how there's great value in the power of conversations. In Joe's interview of me today, we talk about things like boundaries, business, how I see and think about things, and we even talk about art and creativity.   Here are some insights of mine from Joe's interview of me: “We sometimes forget how appreciative people are for receiving gifts” (8:55). “Gratitude, appreciation, and acknowledging when someone did a good job is just so underrated” (9:45). “The more grateful I am for something, the more ambitious I tend to be” (10:45). “Satisfaction and complacency are opposites” (11:00) “Satisfaction fuels success” (11:20). “Just because a conversation doesn't land with me doesn't mean it won't land with someone else” (13:10). “I have personal values and professional values” (14:40). “I don't believe in true altruism” (15:15). “Humans need to fill our cup if we're going to pour into other's” (15:30). “You should never give out of notoriety” (16:05). “There's a time to be public and a time to be private” (16:20). “Thoughts come in; thinking is what we do with them” (18:10). “Most of us believe in polarity, we just stifle it with our own convictions” (19:00). “I want to love people and I want to love them deeply” (21:00). “Boundaries are so underrated” (21:55). “If I'm going to love the stuff that I do, I need boundaries” (22:05). “I love bringing people together. It's one of my favorite things to do” (23:10). “I'm a connector” (24:40). “If you can find a place that has no cell service and WIFI, that in itself is magical” (29:10). “Things are way easier if you do it with a partner” (33:20). “It's scary [to ask somebody for something]” (34:55). “Coaching is less about expertise and more about asking damn good questions and being highly curious” (36:00). “You have to have an offering. How do you have an ask without an offering?” (36:40). “Give me the person that is good and wants to be great” (38:50). “I don't need to shortcut and I don't need to hack. It's not going to be as fulfilling for me” (43:30). “I've gotten better at listening to my thoughts and understanding they might not be true” (46:00). “When I'm curious, I can get anything out of someone” (46:40). “Podcasting is one of the few things that you can overprepare for” (50:30). “I've perfected my preparation and then I try to be highly adaptable” (50:45). “I think sometimes we underestimate what we're actually doing” (58:00). “A lot of people are afraid to just turn on the mic” (58:10). “Things aren't as scary as we make them out to be in our head” (58:40). “We limit what art is or what creativity is to what we can see with our eyes” (1:00:15). “We are all artists; it's just how we choose to use the brush” (1:01:05). “When we label young people, we limit their possibilities” (1:02:00). “My clients have become my friends” (1:05:00).   If you're interested in learning more about what Joe does, I highly recommend you reach out to him via email (joe@onepercentbetterproject.com). Typically, I don't like to have guests back on the podcast for a 2nd time. But today is a little different. Joe and I decided to create a podcast that is interesting, unique, and something that I got a ton of excitement out of. We get into the weeds of if being a guest on a podcast is different than being a host on a podcast, which led to further conversations about being a host vs. being a guest in life, since there are so many facets of society in which we play host and in which we play guest.   As a little bit about Joe if you don't remember from our past conversation, Joe Ferraro is currently entering his 23rd year as an educator, teaching 12th grade English. Joe also teaches public speaking and creative writing. In addition to his work in the classroom, he is the founder of damngoodconversations.com. Damn Good Conversations is a company whose mission it is to teach you repeatable ways to have the best conversations in your life and work. His flagship service is a weekly personal growth podcast, which is called “One Percent Better.”   If this episode resonates with you, let me know. And if it doesn't, I would love to hear your thoughts on why you felt that way as well.   Joe and I had a number of insights during our conversation. Some of them include: “I usually use the word workshop. Because if you feel like you're listening to a keynote, regardless of if you're 1 person or 1 of 30, the idea is that you're going to sit there and you're going to listen the entire time. We all have an average of 27 conversations a day, but how many of them are really good ones? Our guest today knows how to improve every question you ask so that you can get more out of the conversations you have. Joe Ferraro is not only a high school teacher, he's also the host of the One Percent Better podcast and the founder of Damn Good Conversations.  He has joined Thom Singer on this episode of the Digital Enterprise Society podcast for a damn good conversation about simple ways that you can increase your curiosity and make better connections. From identifying the right kinds of questions to ask to training yourself to be more bold in your conversations, this episode is for anyone that is looking for effective ways to get more out of the conversations we all have to have in the workplace.    On today's podcast, you will learn: What makes a good question?  If it can't be clever, it has to be clear.  Good questions don't leave anyone confused.  The goal isn't to be understood, it's to ensure you cannot be misunderstood.  Lean into novelty and curiosity- what questions haven't been asked before?    3 simple steps to asking better questions Conduct a quick self assessment to determine how often you ask questions in your personal or work life- are you afraid to ask questions?  Identify the beginning of the questions you ask. Replace ‘do' or ‘are' with ‘what', ‘why' and ‘how' to invite better responses.  Define what you are hoping to achieve by asking any question.    How to train yourself to ask more questions  Utilize your two ears and one mouth to be an active listener and learner.  Be curious, not judgemental.  Take note of those around you that ask good questions and make note of the questions they ask.  Pause whenever possible to process the questions you hear.    Techniques that create better questions  High velocity questions maintain novelty and get specific about details.  Ask questions like a poker player- ask yourself what exactly you want to gain from others.  Lead with curiosity and identify the best way to get what you want.    Developing the curiosity that leads to greatness Curiosity in the workplace can start wherever you are- in incremental steps.  Identify one place that you feel curious about and focus your effort there.  The relationship between curiosity and questions can work both ways.  If you want to walk two inches taller, ask better questions.    Continue the conversation with us within the Digital Enterprise Society Community at www.DigitalEnterpriseSociety.org.   Digital Download: Virtual Round-Table Series   Damn Good Conversations

Joe Ferraro of the "One Percent Better Podcast" and Alan Stein, Jr. of the "Raise Your Game Show" had a discussion about the EGO. The age old question is what do you do with the ego? Keep it or kill it? Some say you should not have an ego. I say you MUST have an ego, but the right kind of ego. There are 2 types of ego: A big ego and a strong ego. Using their framework, I'm unpacking the EGO further. Check out both of their podcasts: Joe Ferraro "One Percent Better Podcast." Alan Stein Jr. "Raise Your Game Show."

To Whom it May Concern: Please accept my highest recommendation for lifelong learning.  It's a mindset, a practice, a habit.  One that literally gets better every day.  Believe it or not I have only known lifelong learning, or kaizen, or continuous improvement as it is sometimes called, for 20 years.  As I stare down my 42nd birthday, it startles me to try and remember so many wasted moments in classrooms across in Pennsylvania.   I day dreamed in an elementary Catholic school, where viciously underpaid teachers were doing the best they could.  My mind wandered in a private high school where kids with IQs beyond belief thrived as I clawed to keep up.  When I got to college, something clicked and I began asking questions, listening to the words the teacher said as well as the vital meaning behind them.  My grades improved as I learned how school worked, but even then, between Division I baseball and other priorities, I largely excelled in classrooms that featured motivated, creative teachers in the front of the room.  Interestingly, only when I became a student teacher at age 21 did I begin to unravel the power of lifelong learning.  As a teen, I was quick to dismiss a teacher as boring. Are some teachers boring?  Sure. So are some politicians, doctors, and even comedians.  I now believe it is the learner responsible for curiosity, generosity, and active listening he or she brings to every experience, but because of my bias towards dynamic educators, as a teacher myself, I take the responsibility for creating an environment in which people want to learn. I know my style of classroom presentation won't be every body's favorite, but it's the best version of me that I have yet found.  Only in the last two decades did I feel the power of lifelong learning. First as a student teacher, one book ahead of my 7th graders.  Secondly as a college baseball coach helping to rebuild a dormant program.  Next as a High School English teacher and HS baseball coach shifting my philosophy to student-centered labs where real-world skills collide with classic and contemporary literature.   In each case, lifelong learning has revealed itself to be a source of tremendous inspiration, challenge, and renewal.   Immediately obvious upon meeting lifelong learning is its unique blend of challenge and invigoration.  It's a wonderful elixir . . .  instead of getting tired while learning from every experience, you actually feel energized like a slow drip coffee IV.  You start by listening, then identifying your own biases that make decision making so challenging.  Then asking questions.  Really great questions.  “what would an opponent in a debate say against you?” “What has helped you develop the confidence you have in your opinion?”  “What would it take to change your mind?”  “How would you recommend someone just starting out begin?”  Once you've come this far with life-long learning, you'll get some great answers.  But will you hear them?  Will you receive them with an open mind and heart ready to be convinced?  What is learning after all if not willingness to be changed?  If all of this sounds like a lot of work, remember that ignorance and stubbornness are much easier, and much more damaging.  Either side can be drilled into a habit, choose wisely.  It is difficult to pinpoint what I admire most about lifelong learning, but I know what I dislike most about it—encountering those who don't want to practice it.  You won't recognize these stalwarts by eye.  It's by ear.  “That's how we've always done it.” “That won't work for me.” “I am just so used to my way.”  “It doesn't feel comfortable.”  “Someday.” Please forgive my gushing tone. Lifelong learning is a life-altering mindset and practice.  One that starts innocently and slowly.  It can begin with a book, like Carol Dweck's Mindset.  With a a famous virtual mentor like Daniel Kahneman, or a real-life mentor like your Little League Coach you've lost touch with.  It can begin with a newsletter like Farnam Street, or a Twitter account you use to follow deep thinkers.  Lifelong learning can begin anywhere.  Even in a podcast named after the art and science of getting just a little better each day.  I look forward to hearing about your small wins with lifelong learning.  It's an incredible ride. Please feel free to contact me with further questions about lifelong learning.  Sincerely, Joe Ferraro

In our latest episode, Mackey is live from Crandall America. Mackey talks about his friend, Joe Ferraro's podcast, One Percent Better, and some key learnings he got from Joe's latest interview with Seth Godin. Sometimes good enough is just that, "good enough", which means it's just good enough to pass; it's not the real thing, the real accomplishment, but it's decent enough. We don't have to be perfect, we just have to be in the game long enough to give ourselves permission to get better. We have to be in the game long enough to improve and to do that we have to realize that our "good enough" is just that....good enough.
