Have you ever wondered how the physical act of speaking can improve your communication? Kevin sits down with Michael Chad Hoeppner to discuss the physical nature of communication and exercises we can do to get better. Michael challenges our common assumptions about speaking, such as believing it's purely a mental activity. Instead, he introduces the concept of embodied cognition, explaining how communication is a physical activity involving over 100 muscles and should be approached like athletic training. Michael shares the science behind thought suppression and why focusing on "not saying um" is counterproductive. He also talks about the Five Ps of vocal variety (Pace, Pitch, Pause, Power, Placement) and how they impact your message. Shai Davidai – Columbia Business School Professor & A Leading Voice Combatting Jew-Hatred and Israel-Bashing

Given Jew-hatred and virulent anti-Israel rhetoric spiraling out of control, particularly on college campuses, we've invited Shai Davidai to be our featured guest on this episode of the program. Shai is Assistant Professor in the Management Division of Columbia University Business School. His research examines people's everyday judgments of themselves, other people, and society as a whole. Born and raised just outside Tel-Aviv, Shai received his Ph.D. from Cornell in 2015. Before joining Columbia Business School, Shai spent a year as a post-doctoral fellow at Princeton and 3 years as an Assistant Professor of Psychology at The New School for Social Research. Following the barbaric October 7th 2023 terrorist attack on Israel, Shai has faced deplorable treatment from Columbia University for standing up for Israel and the rights of Jewish students on campus. Today, he's a leading face and voice in the fight against Jew-hatred and Israel-bashing. Our conversation begins with Shai sharing his one way ticket to the safety of his late Grandmother's couch in Givatayim, just outside of Tel Aviv. While on weekend breaks from his university studies in Jerusalem, Shai would visit his Savta (Grandmother) Lydia. Together they would talk, smoke, drink Turkish coffee and enjoy her signature Romanian cheesecake. And at some point, Shai would fall asleep on her couch. Shai shares that Savta Lydia, who was from Bucharest, was studying to be a doctor. Aged 19 and after her first year of university, despite good grades, she was called into the Dean's office and told she wouldn't be able to continue her studies because the university met its quota of Jews. That, plus her being a woman, didn't fit the university's agenda. Realizing she had no future as a Jew in Romania, she packed up and traveled solo to Israel to chart a new course. Her biggest regret in life, Shai offers, is that she didn't become a doctor. We continue our chat with Shai highlighting: 1) How the first protests at Columbia supporting the October 7th attack (organizing began the evening of October 7th while terrorists were still in Israel!) took place at the university on October 12th before one IDF soldier set foot in Gaza and four days after Hezbollah's unprovoked attack on Israel's north. On the 12th, approximately 800 students, faculty and staff came out to celebrate “the historic day” (their words). They used slogans like “resistance by any means necessary” (which for them meant rape, murder and kidnapping civilians was “necessary”). For me, not sure what the need was for resistance since Israel had left Gaza 18 years before and thousands of Gazans would cross into Israel daily to work.  2) The Kafkaesque treatment he's received from Columbia University, simply for speaking out, not against the protestors or their hatred, but against Columbia's administration for allowing the hatred to fester and take root. For exercising his first amendment rights, he's been banned from Columbia's campus. This includes the Columbia Hillel. 3) His goal in speaking out is to push the message that we have a problem for support of anti-Jewish, anti-Israel and anti-American terrorism in academia. 4) How US professors openly support US designated terrorist groups, e.g., Hamas and the Houthis, but only ones that target Jews (you won't see support for Boko Haram). How the same professors and others remained and remain silent on, for example, the October 7th attack and the burning of synagogues worldwide. 5) Jewish students being verbally and physically attacked on campuses and denied entry into their public campus spaces. 6) The silent, slanted and biased behavior of international aid organizations like the Red Cross (which to this day has not visited one single hostage), UNRWA, or Amnesty International which engages in historical revisionism. 7) How the anti-Israel and Jew-hating protests are in fact anti-democratic and also anti-American. 8) What starts with the Jews doesn't end with the Jews. This is a powerful episode to be heard more than once and shared widely. For more from Shai, tune into his podcast: Here I Am With Shai Davidai.  Also, follow Shai on all social media: @shaidavidai

What does it mean to be an activist today? For Columbia professor Shai Davidai, it means being on the front lines speaking out against the rampant Jew hatred he saw on his campus. Despite the antisemitism he has faced, including a suspension from the university, Davidai continues to spread awareness of the plight Jews on campus face. Host Steven Shalowitz once again sits down with Davidai to discuss some of the vitriol he saw in Columbia post-October 7, his role as a Jewish advocate, and his dealings with a biased administration punishing him for speaking out against antisemitism.

Should you hold on to that long-time rental or trade it in for something else? Many people say you should hold forever, but is that always the best way to go? In this episode, you'll hear when it might make sense to break that rule for the sake of better cash flow or better appreciation. We call this process “portfolio rebalancing.” Among the topics we discuss are property performance reviews, portfolio diversification and risk management, the 1031 exchange, investing at different life stages, and when it might be best to sell or to hold on to your investment properties for the long-term. Joining me to discuss your options are two of our experienced and long-time RealWealth investment counselors, Joe Torre and Aristotle Kumpis. They are active investors who have been advising RealWealth investors for many years. Joe began investing in real estate in 2004 and has a track record of success in both up and down markets. Before he came on board with RealWealth he worked as a data analyst for tech companies in Silicon Valley and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He has an MBA in Finance from Columbia University Business School in New York. He enjoys helping people create generational wealth. Aristotle got his real estate license in 2007 and has been helping investors find cash-flowing rental properties since then. He was inspired by his parents who owned rental properties in St. Louis, where he grew up. He attended the University of Missouri in Saint Louis and moved to Southern California in 2002. He also likes to write music and spend time outdoors, especially with his family. During the interview, we mentioned a recent webinar on real estate lending with Richard Advani of Guaranteed Rate. You'll find that webinar under the Learn tab at newsforinvestors.com. Please don't forget to subscribe to this podcast! Thanks for listening, Kathy LINKS: ~~~~ JOIN RealWealth® FOR FREE

Shai Davidai did not set out to become one of the leading faces in calling out Jew hatred and anti-Israel rhetoric on college campuses. He just wanted to focus on his career in academia and be with his family. Yet, when the pro-Hamas protests came to his Columbia University following the October 7 attacks and Davidai found himself in a maelstrom of hate and harassment, the mild-mannered professor dedicated himself to advocating for the Jewish homeland amidst a sea of antisemitism. On this special bonus episode of IsraelCast, host Steven Shalowitz sits down with Davidai to discuss his antisemitic experiences at Columbia, the shocking indifference from the university's administration, and how everyone can do their part in supporting Jewish communities under attack.

Moving forward, Console will employ a progressively decentralized approach based on the needs of its communities.  Console is open source and secure by design — Users are verified with native smart contracts, not third-party bots. In today's episode, our guest will talk about shifting the mindset to align it to purpose. She will also give tips and insights on how to be your best self by tapping into the physical. Listen in! Social Media Website: https://Jeaniecoomber.com  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/986666321719033/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jeanie_coomber/  Twitter: https://twitter.com/jeanie_coomber  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeanie-coomber-90973b4/  YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbMZ2HyNNyPoeCSqKClBC_w I think it's important to start with the word warrior, and as a coach for the last 16 years, I have worked with leaders literally around the world in various industries. [3:34] I have always done this one-to-one work listening to what's going on within this person that makes them unique and powerful in the world. [3:46] I gravitated to the word warrior when I was considering expanding my footprint. [3:39] When a warrior is a brave and experienced soldier, they demonstrate bravery and courage and optimism, and a willingness to step forward into things. [4:09] This embodied what I would see in the conversations that I was having with leaders around the world. [4:23] I took a big chance on myself, brought in some great experts, and decided to expand my footprint to provide a platform to get into dialogue with men and women in the workplace and to talk about things beyond professional attributes. [4:51] What makes us unique and brings us magic when we are at our best are the things outside of our professional attributes, such as our intuition, our soul, and our ability to assess situations and people. [5:20] I decided to create a platform that provides for us to talk about all things, and that was really the impetus behind expanding what I was doing in the world and providing a platform to do that. [5:34] I launched my brand last February, thinking I was going to have all the time in the world to make this shift from executive coaching. [6:14] March hit, and I lost about 40% of my business very quickly because no one was hiring an executive coach, and all my travel got canceled. [6:43] I felt this calling to get into service to the business community, so I grabbed my phone and started serving up as much as I could through Facebook Live, which was the quickest, most efficient way to get content and conversation out there. [6:51] What I got in return was tremendous community, and I learned so much about myself because I was going through it like everybody else. [7:12] Through the conversation, the brand took flight, and I was able to bring forward a lot of the concepts and the things that I had thought to bring forward in a practical and robust way. [7:24] Now it is more of a sophisticated platform, but the concept in the original intention is the same. [7:48] It's intended to be in service to the business community. We're talking about things that are more than our professional attributes and not being afraid of all of those things that make you unique and powerful in the world. [7:58] I still do executive coaching and what I have noticed is that we have expanded our capacity in the world, and we have a lot more to us than we realize. [9:51] What I think will happen is there's going to be really deliberate conscious shifts in how we show it in our lives. [11:02] All of the lessons, insights and wisdom that we've gained in the last year and half needs to be a part of the narrative. [14:54] In my opinion, there is a massive change happening, and organizations are looking at people and talent through a very different lens like never before. [15:41] I am also really excited about Gen Z coming into the workplace, what they're going to bring and how they will elevate. [16:06] Commercial Break. [17:08] The most common theme that I've seen that ignites the worrier within is when I asked the question, "when you are most effective, and you are at your best, what does it look and feel like?" [18:49] When you think about your most effective version of yourself, that is your steady and anchor. [19:32] There are a couple of ways that you can get there and some of my favorite techniques are tapping into your physical and not just relying upon your intellectual horsepower. [19:41] Your power center is right around your diaphragm which is right below your rib cage, and when you breathe, it triggers the parasympathetic system just by physically touching that part of your body. [20:15] Another one of my favorite things is putting your finger on the forehead right between the eyebrows, bringing your chin to your chest, uncrossing your legs, and making sure those feet are firmly on the ground and you sit and breathe. [21:39] Your forehead right between your eyebrows is where your prefrontal cortex is and is usually where your best self is. [22:05] Just by pointing to it also allows you to bring all of your energy back to your executive thinking mind, interrupt all of the noise, and bring forth a great version of yourself. [22:13] Another way to amplify If ever you get nervous or someone's coming at you, always uncross your feet and get your body in an expansive position. [24:25] If you want to ignite a warrior within, most of it comes from your mindset. [25:54] Being afraid, constricting, or having insecurities is all normal and all people go through it, and I learned that naming wherever you are normalizes it. [27:01] Take that question around your most effective self, put pen to paper when you're most effective, and put language behind it. It will help you to inform what your next move is. [28:46] If you have something that's always playing in the background, just by putting pen to paper, it will help bring some of that up. That is information that will help you step more and more into the best version of yourself. Joel Brockner is the Phillip Hettleman Professor of Business at Columbia University Business School, Academic Director of Columbia CaseWorks, author of The Process Matters: Engaging and Equipping People for Success, and a leading authority on a variety of psychological issues in the workplace, including managing change, leadership, decision-making, and cross-cultural differences in work behavior. In this episode, Stew and Joel discuss Joel’s book, The Process Matters, and what works and what doesn’t in order to engage employees so all can be successful. Being fair and transparent matters. Sharing accurate information is important. The onboarding process matters as does giving people some voice and control in how they can best contribute to an organization’s mission. Joel addresses the fallacy of not having enough time to devote to developing people in this way, noting that an ounce of prevention is well worth the pound of cure. Repairing damage from unfairness is often far more costly, such as in employee turnover. It’s usually a smarter investment to develop people and retain them than it is to replace. And the experience of fairness at work spills over into other parts of our lives. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Jason Hartman interviews research scientist, Heidi Grant Halvorson regarding the science behind human motivation and success. There are many successful people in the world who are highly motivated and have concise goals, but how many actually understand why they're successful or why they fail? The common belief is that certain people are just genetically wired to succeed or fail. Heidi states this is not entirely the case and shares the findings of scientific research on achievement. She talks about strategies that people use, principles that people can count on and apply to their own life, and states that our own intuition about what helps us succeed or causes us to fail can often be incorrect. It's not about ability or IQ. Heidi explains the psychological factors behind how people react to challenges, the beliefs and mindsets that people have as they try to reach a goal. Defining success is personal, dependent on an individual's sense of well-being, lasting happiness and autonomy. She says it's important to be specific about goals, to break them down into manageable, specific pieces that are planned out with when and where, and taking the time to define success for ourselves. Jason and Heidi also discuss the relationship between money and happiness, expressing that there is a money point where it does make it easier to make choices and pursue the things individuals find interesting in life, plus containing a sense of accomplishment and opening the door to help others. Unhappiness comes about when a person makes and uses their money for the wrong reasons, lacking sensibility, leading to dissatisfaction. Heidi emphasizes motivation and realistic goals are important. Jason shares his own opinion on wealth, noting that, on the one hand, having more “things” can actually become a burden, but it does allow a person to help others and create experiences and memories. Heidi states that what people do with their wealth is the important factor for fulfillment and happiness. Heidi Grant Halvorson is a rising star in the field of motivational science. She is a an Expert Blogger for Fast Company, The Huffington Post, and Psychology Today, as well as a regular contributor to the BBC World Service'sBusiness Daily, the Harvard Business Review, and SmartBrief's SmartBlog on Leadership.  Her writing has also been featured on CNN Living and Mamapedia. Heidi is also Associate Director of the Motivation Science Center at the Columbia University Business School. In addition to her work as author and co-editor of the highly-regarded academic book The Psychology of Goals (Guilford, 2009), she has authored papers in her field's most prestigious journals, including the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin,European Journal of Social Psychology, and Judgment and Decision Making.   She has received numerous grants from the National Science Foundation for her research on goals and achievement.  Her work has been praised by Carol Dweck and Matthew Kelly, among many others. Dr. Grant Halvorson is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, and was recently elected to the highly selective Society for Experimental Social Psychology.  She gives frequent invited addresses and speaks regularly at national conferences, and is available for speaking and consulting engagements, primarily in education, marketing, and management. She received her PhD in social psychology from Columbia University.

Earlier this year, the Metropolitan Museum of Art said it will name its newly remodeled plaza and fountains for David H. Koch, the billionaire conservative activist who gave $65 million towards the renovation. Koch has his name on a few prominent buildings around town, including the former New York State Theater at Lincoln Center and the American Museum of Natural History's dinosaur wing. Koch presents one of the most visible examples of naming rights, a trend that some say is a necessary part of philanthropy. Yet others argue that giving should be a selfless, anonymous act. In this podcast, we consider what's driving the trend and what it signifies. "With the fall-off in giving from the government, corporations and foundations, the private sector is even more essential than it was in the past," said Robin Pogrebin, a culture reporter at the New York Times. "In the past there was perhaps a nobility in giving anonymously. But now if donors are interested in seeing their names on things then organizations do need to make the tradeoffs involved in making that available to them." Naming rights for major buildings generally go for about $100 million in New York, as seen in recent gifts by Stephen Schwarzman (to the New York Public Library), Koch (to the New York State Theater), Henry Kravis and Ronald Perelman (both to the Columbia University Business School). Smaller gifts may fund a hallway, a lobby or even a toilet. Joan Desens is the director of institutional advancement at the Glimmerglass Festival, a summer opera festival in Cooperstown, NY. She says that patrons were once reluctant to have their name associated with a gift, but society has become more open. "People are very blatant with Facebook exposure," she said. "We’re all out there. So I think that people are more comfortable with having their name out there. It’s increasingly becoming an attraction." Patricia Illingworth, an editor of Giving Well: The Ethics of Philanthropy, believes that naming rights are a mixed blessing from an ethical standpoint. To some degree, "the arts seem to be a place where people from all walks of life and all social classes can gather together in solidarity," she noted. "So if billionaires are branding institutions and organizations with their names," that can alienate some people. Nevertheless, Illingworth believes that named buildings can serve as an example and encourage increased giving from others. Does an arts institution risk alienating patrons by associating with a major donor who holds a controversial personal agenda? "The point is, [patrons] are going to walk in anyway," said Pogrebin. "They may object but it’s not going to keep them away. Time passes and people get used to things." A more complex picture emerges if a donor feels at liberty to dictate programming. According to a recent New Yorker piece, a documentary film was halted because of pressure applied on PBS from David H. Koch. Opinions differ as to whether this occurs within performing arts organizations. "We like to think that the democratic process is what determines the social agenda," said Illingworth. "And yet when philanthropists start acting like governments, in a sense they can determine the social agenda. Naming rights can exacerbate that."  But according to Pogrebin, "there is a pretty bright line when it comes to cultural organizations and artistic interference. That's the real cardinal sin. A donor cannot meddle in artistic choices and once you go down that road it's a slippery slope." Weigh in: How do you feel about naming rights in the arts?
