Tracy Dawson: The Trouble with Tracy

The Women Of Ill Repute

It felt like Old Home Week. A few years ago Tracy Dawson was on the CTV comedy show The Dish Show, co-hosted by you know who. Yes, of course, it was Mo. And Tracy is still tempting trouble, mouthing off and cracking jokes, only now she's in L.A. She's a comedy writer who's just written her first book, “ Let Me Be Frank: A Book About Women Who Dressed Like Men To Do Sh**t They Weren't Supposed To Do”. Tracy got inspired after being told the TV shows she wanted to write for had “no female needs”! There may have been F-words expressed, but she's a comedian, so the book is very funny. She is now working on a screen adaptation. We talk about how women can crack jokes, even if they wear pants with zippers in the front instead of in the back. Turns out front zippers were once for men only! Tracy is a writer, comedian and actress, who won a Gemini for her role in "Call Me Fitz" and has sold several TV projects in Canada and the U.S. She started at Second City in Toronto. You Might Know Her From Six Feet Under, Blade Runner, Call Me Fitz, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Buffalo Bill, Club Paradise, and Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead. Joanna talked to us about playing Brenda’s narcissistic mother Margaret Chenowith on Six Feet Under and the series perfect ending, reimagining the snake dance that Zhora never got to do in Blade Runner, learning how to do Ava Gardner’s makeup for her role in Roger Rabbit, and plans for the Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead sequel or reboot. All that plus Ava Gardner and Mickey Rooney’s relationship, Bob Hoskins being hot as hell, and Joanna playing gay with trailblazer Meredith Baxter.    Follow us on social media: @damianbellino || @rodemanne    Alice Ghostley in “Greased Lightning” Grease 2 penis reveal Moonstruck was great, Nic Cage has a wooden hand though? Cher won the Oscar for Moonstruck over Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction Glenn has 8 Oscar nominations (most nominated with no wins!) and got a Razzie nom this year too.  Two lead women in Moonstruck are not Italian (Dukakis:Greek / Cher: Armenian) Joanna’s laugh is iconic  Played Brenda’s mom on Six Feet Under, which maybe has the best finale of all time Starred Zhora in Blade Runner but never got to do Zhora’s sexy snake dance because the movie went over budget. Ridley Scott re-shot her famous through-the-plate-glass scene since it was clear that her stunt-double Lee Pulford had a really bad wig (that was totally visible in the original final cut)  Joanna filmed the sexy snake dance herself and uploaded it on her YouTube since she has snake handling experience (the snake in the movie was hers!) Jason Priestley is still remembered as one of the stars of the seminal teen series "Beverly Hills, 90210." Of course, he's done plenty of TV and film since then, including series like "Tru Calling," "Call Me Fitz" and "Haven." But he's also now a prolific director, working on both comedies like "Working the Engels" but also sci-fi shows like "Van Helsing" and "Dark Matter." Now he's back on TV as the star of "Private Eyes," a fun, light hearted procedural mystery drama from Canada that has made its way across the border on ION. ACTRESS - LAUREN ASH Lauren Ash stars as the ever-so convincing Dina, on NBC's new comedy Superstore. Dina is the no nonsense assistant manager you certainly don't ever want to mess with. I still can't believe I am watching her most of the time, and that's because I've known Lauren as the ultimate bestie and birthday wingman of my dear friend Niki, for quite some time now; shout out to the Get Fresh Dog Crew. I became so accustomed to seeing and hearing about Lauren, that you could imagine my surprise when I learned that her natural, comedic sensabitiy and grace wasn't just for nothing. I had no idea. I watch her on Superstore and I am constantly amazed and in awe. Her timing is just so good. The day of our recording was so fun, free and easy. I find that most refreshing; she's just a real, true girl's girl. Her moments that killed me most of all were the ones about life growing up as a teenage "old lady", and of course our teenage sex song exchange. However, those stories I got off the mic though, I wish I could of played those! Lauren Ash is orginally from Toronto, Canada. She started out at The Second City, Toronto and was later invited to perform at the company's main stages in Toronto and Chicago. Last year she killed us as Hortense on the Comedy Central series Another Period, with Natasha Leggero and Riki Lindhome. Her past roles include ABC's Super Fun Night, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, Lars and the Real Girl, Camille, Scare Tactics, Howie Do It, and countless Canadian series including Lost Girl, Cracked, The Ron James Show, Call Me Fitz, Bomb Girls, Spun Out, and Match Game. She's won six times at the Canadian Comedy Awards, including Canadian Comedy Person of the Year. She's been nominated for an ACTRA Award (Canada's SAG Awards) and the winner of a Canadian Screen Award (Canada's Emmys) for her performance on "Spun Out." Last year she even threw the first pitch at a Blue Jay's game. WHAAAAT! Superstore airs Mondays at 8pm on NBC and it's also streaming on Hulu. Within seven years of graduating from film school, Sheri Elwood had not only created her own successful TV series, but had written and directed a feature film starring Kirsten Dunst and Lynn Redgrave. Fast forward to the present: her current series, Call Me Fitz, which was inspired by her own family, has just won seven Gemini Awards. After graduating from Ryerson University’s Film Program in Toronto, Sheri Elwood was awarded the National Apprenticeship Award from the Academy of Canadian Film and Television. This launched her to many seasons of comedy writing for networks such as Disney, Fox, The Family Channel, and YTV. By 1999, she had created her own series for tweens, I Was a Sixth Grade Alien, which went two seasons. In the off season, Sheri wrote and directed a Gemini nominated short film, Eb and Flo, and her first feature film, the romantic teen drama, Deeply, starring Lynn Redgrave, Kirsten Dunst and Brent Carver. Deeply premiered to a four-star review at the Toronto International Film Festival, and was also nominated for four Genie Awards. Elwood teamed with Lionsgate TV to create the comedy series Beta Males for the CW Network, and also wrote for the 1-hr ABC/CTV drama Defying Gravity for Fox Television Studios with creator James Parriott (Grey’s Anatomy). Fulfilling a dream to capture the spirit of her loving and unique family on TV, Elwood created the edgy cable series Call Me Fitz, starring Jason Priestly, for TMN/Movie Central. They have just begun shooting season three, with Elwood writing, directing, and showrunning. You can catch Call Me Fitz on HBO Canada, or in the U.S. on Netflix or DirecTV. Elwood has just signed a blind development deal with Jerry Bruckheimer Television. Sheri splits her time between Los Angeles and Nova Scotia, where she and her family spend time at their century-old schoolhouse and love to ring the bell.
