Tread Perilously's WandaVision month enters Quality Time territory with an episode of Family Ties called "Suzanne Takes You Down." When Elyse's friend, Suzanne, admits to feeling unfulfilled now that the kids have left for college, she hires the forlorn friend to do some clerical work. But almost immediately, Suzanne begins offering opinions about architectural features of an upcoming project. Soon, Elyse is doing double the work while convincing clients that much of her friend's suggestions are not feasible or against building code. And just when she has had enough, Suzanne's husband announces he wants a divorce. Will Elyse find the courage to fire Suzanne? Erik and Justin immediately credit frequent guest Paul Pakler's former podcast, Quality Time with Family Ties, for covering the episode first. Erik's bias against Ethan Hawke makes an appearance. The initial premise of Family Ties gets examined as the episode has very little to do with the kids. Justin appraises the talents of Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter. Architecture remains the fakest TV job. Elyse and Steven's history as hippies leads to a tangent -- and the reason why Erik always connects the show with Airplane! The pair try to figure out if Jennifer ever gets a character and the "mild chuckle" philosophy returns.
This week, we're watching more Wings Hauser with a look at the 1991 TV movie "Bump In The Night." This movie is almost entirely exposition, and while this isn't an approach I'd recommend for novelists, I can't imagine telling this particular story any other way. You might say that ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN is the exception that proves the rule. Master storyteller, William Goldman, pulls it off and that means there's a whole lot we can learn about how and when to use exposition when writing a story. When it comes to character arcs (Melanie's topic this season), neither of the protagonists change in this story but they change the world around them and what that reveals about how stories work is nothing short of fascinating. -V."It's almost exclusively exposition. If you have ever wondered whether exposition was a thing or whether it was important, seriously watch this movie." - Valerie Francis For access to writing templates and worksheets, and more than 70 hours of training (all for free), subscribe to Valerie's Inner Circle. To learn to read like a writer, visit Melanie's website.Follow Valerie on X, Instagram and Threads @valerie_francisFollow Melanie on X, Instagram and Facebook @MelanieHillAuthor

Cynthia Nixon. Meredith Baxter. Niecy Nash. Cassandra Peterson/Elvira. Elizabeth Gilbert. Glennon Doyle. Carol Liefer. Wanda Sykes. What do the incredibly accomplished and talented women on this list all have in common? They all dated and/or married men…until later in life when they all fell in love with other woman. Often to their own surprise. Known as Later in Life Lesbians, these women discovered an entirely new level of intimacy, happiness and sexual satisfaction, with members of the same sex. It should be no surprise. In a recent study, 95% of heterosexual men said they reached orgasm when being sexually intimate. How many hetero women had orgasms with their male partners? 65%. Read that again. 95% of straight men had orgasms. 65% of straight women. In comparison, the orgasm rate for lesbians was 86%. Not that I even need to explain this, but the women who reported more orgasms were recipients of more oral sex. Because, of course. Men, I've been saying this for years. You are the next Fotomat. What is driving so many women to switch teams later in life? Is this part of a much bigger trend? Is this all a backlash because so many straight women are sexually dissatisfied due to their male partners? Is this all about the dishwasher? Whatever the case may be, sexuality is lot more fluid than many realize. To get some answers, I speak with Coming Out Coach, Anne-Marie Zanzal. An author, and herself, a later in life lesbian, she provides one-on-one and group coaching to women coming out later in life. Her memoir Authentic Peace tells the story of her chaotic childhood, challenging marriage, sexual awakening, and recreating her life after 50. We talk about the growing phenomenon of women becoming lesbians later in life. The not-so surprising reasons behind their decisions. And then she gives me her Are You Secretly a Lesbian test. It was an oral exam, natch. No matter where you are on your journey, there's a good chance you've made many life choices for reasons you don't even realize. A lot of people stay in unsuccessful relationships for all sorts of reasons. It can be challenging to understand a brand new attraction or perhaps feelings you've kept suppressed for years. But, remember, life is short. You deserve all of the happiness and consensual pleasure you desire. The Dirty John franchise, clumsily named though it is, is back -- and Marcia Chatelain is back to talk about it. It doesn't feel "necessary," in These Times...and yet we're both planning to keep watching, thanks to Amanda Peet's fearless performance; the comparisons we can make with Mrs. America; and the fond memories it recalls of Meredith Baxter's definitive version. Later, we're digging into a Lifetime movie about another '80s true-crime icon: Laurie "Bambi" Bembenek, whose quest to unmask corruption in Milwaukee law enforcement (yes, she was kind of trying to defund the police) got her embroiled with a bad husband and a worse frame job. We don't agree on Tatum O'Neal's performance; we do agree that this early-nineties movie was ahead of its time in its takes on stalking, feminist whistle-blowers, and the awesomeness of Victor Garber. That ominous piano can only mean one thing...The Blotter Presents, Episode 146. Everyone thanks their "femailman" for the dedicated service they continue to provide. Matt takes a stand for fat people representation. We try to understand the nature of Wesley's new sweater buddy. Erin tells us about her unfortunate encounters with the bidet. In Correction Corner, which Matt does, says he won't do, and then does anyway, we go hard for Meredith Baxter and soft for Stephen Collins. Minh takes us home with one of his trademark apt comparisons. We hope all our listeners are hanging in there and we're grateful that you'll continue to join us in flinging our collective anxious energy into the bottomless pit of podcast. Stay safe! One Day at a Time is an American sitcom television series that aired on CBS from December 16, 1975, until May 28, 1984. It starred Bonnie Franklin as a divorced mother raising two teenage daughters, played by Mackenzie Phillips and Valerie Bertinelli in Indianapolis. The series was created by Whitney Blake and Allan Manings, a husband-and-wife writing duo who had both been actors in the 1950s and 1960s. The series was based on Whitney Blake's own life as a single mother raising her three children (including future actress Meredith Baxter) after her divorce from her first husband. Divorced mother Ann Romano moves herself and her teenage daughters, rebellious Julie and wisecracking Barbara, from their home in Logansport, Indiana, to Indianapolis. Ann frequently struggles with maintaining her role as mother while affording her daughters the freedom she never had as a young woman. Dwayne Schneider, the building superintendent, provides usually unwanted advice to the tenants, especially Ann. Ann dates her divorce lawyer, David Kane and they become engaged, but on their wedding day David says he wants kids; Ann does not, so they call off the wedding. After David takes a job in Los Angeles, the show focuses on Ann's dilemmas as single mother and career woman, as well as the girls' growing pains, with Schneider becoming a more welcome part of the family. Ann's strained relationship with her ex-husband Ed slowly improves, as does the girls' relationship with his new wife Vickie. Julie and Barbara graduate from high school and head into the working world. Julie eventually marries flight-attendant Max Horvath. Alex, the orphaned son of Ann's deceased boyfriend, moves in, changing the dynamics in the female-dominated apartment. Later in the series' run, Julie gives birth to daughter "Little Annie" Horvath, Barbara marries dental student Mark Royer, and Ann's mother Katherine moves nearby. In the penultimate episode, Ann decides to take a job in London, leaving her daughters in Indianapolis raising their own families. In the series finale, Schneider also leaves town, moving to Florida to take care of his niece and nephew.

If you are a child of the ’80s, then you’re very familiar with Meredith Baxter's "Elyse Keaton" character on Family Ties. She was a kind, patient and open-minded mom. The same qualities that Cathy Buck, the proprietor of Cameo Cinema, exudes every day. My friend, Jason Buck, is very lucky to have her for his mom. It is her kind of love and dedication that keep the Cameo thriving, in wonderful St. Helena, CA in the center of the Napa Valley! The Cameo Cinema is beautiful - the oldest single-screen theater in the United States. Kathy and I sat in front of the screen, talking about her background and how she got introduced to the movie theater business. I enjoyed hearing about some interesting guests who’ve arrived at the movies with Secret Service in tow, not to mention Hollywood dynasties such as the Coppolas and Robert Redford who’ve premiered their movies here. I admire her passion and love for the movie arts, and believe that we can elevate our lives through watching, enjoying and studying cinema. If you are ever in Napa Valley, you must attend and see Kathy introducing movies to the audience. Please let this historic place entertain and enchant you!Follow the Cameo:
