This episode explores one of the world's greatest historical collections relating to the golden age of ocean liner travel. To find out more Dr Sam Willis spoke with John Sayers, a man who has dedicated his life to creating the most wonderful collection. In the early 1950s John's parents took him across the Atlantic on the Cunard Line's RMS Franconia eastbound to the UK, and RMS Queen Elizabeth back westbound to America. Shortly after that he came across five souvenir ocean liner lapel pins at a Sunday morning antiques fair and from that moment on his career as a collector began. What started with lapel pins and then souvenir spoons and napkin rings soon moved onto ephemera - printed bits and pieces relating to everyday life on board ship - a crucial source of historic material that helps us reconstruct the lived experience of those aboard, both passengers and crew. That collection, which includes posters, tickets, brochures, sailing schedules, letters written on board, passenger lists, menus, advertising material (the list really is endless) – is now held in the John Johnson collection at the Bodleian Library in Oxford and to illustrate it John has written a fabulous new book: Secrets of the Great Ocean Liners. How I love a romance set aboard a luxury cruise ship or ocean liner, especially classic movies set on ships in the early to mid 20th-century, a heyday of ocean travel. The coziness, the leather luggage with a separate toiletries case, the cute staterooms and cabins, the service, people dressing for elegant dinner and dancing, the endless ocean views, and falling asleep rocked by waves...of course, in this dream, I'm on the Cunard Line in a massive luxury suite with full balcony, and my sweetie is right by my side as we sail to some exotic location. In the early days of May 1915, as spring began to color the shores of New York City, an engineering marvel prepared to undertake a journey across the Atlantic. RMS Lusitania, the jewel of the Cunard Line, was a spectacle of power and elegance, a symbol of human ambition that pushed the limits of what was possible. With her four grand funnels and sleek hull stretching out at an impressive 787 feet, she was a sight to behold. As she loomed majestically in the New York harbor, preparing to set off for her destination of Liverpool, England, none could have predicted the chilling fate that awaited her in the icy waters of the Atlantic. Her passengers - a motley crew of the wealthy and influential, hopeful immigrants, and families seeking to reunite with loved ones - were embarking on a voyage that would unknowingly etch their names into the annals of history. Little did they know that their journey on the Lusitania would become a significant catalyst that would shift the course of the greatest war the world had ever seen. Meanwhile, beneath the waves, another vessel lurked. Far from the grandeur and elegance of the Lusitania, the German submarine U-20, a stealthy predator of the deep, was preparing to leave its own indelible mark on history. Commanded by the unwavering Kapitänleutnant Walther Schwieger, U-20 was ready to fulfill its chilling mission, and the Lusitania had entered its crosshairs. This is the story of the ill-fated voyage of the Lusitania, a tale of human ambition, political intrigue, and the unpredictable nature of warfare. A story set against the backdrop of the First World War that explores the events that led up to the disaster, the profound immediate and long-term impacts it had on the global stage, and the enduring legacy it left behind. As we delve into this fateful chapter of history, we invite you to journey with us across time and tide, into the heart of one of the most impactful maritime disasters of the 20th century.

RMS Lusitania was a British ocean liner that was launched by the Cunard Line in 1906 and that held the Blue Riband appellation for the fastest Atlantic crossing in 1908. It was briefly the world's largest passenger ship until the completion of the Mauretania three months later. She was sunk on her 202nd trans-Atlantic crossing, on 7 May 1915, by a German U-boat 11 miles (18 km) off the southern coast of Ireland, killing 1,198 passengers and crew.

Carpathia is the vessel that earned her historical fame by coming to the rescue of the stricken Titanic in April 1912. She is often glossed over in the history books but Carpathia herself was a remarkable ship with a fascinating history, and one that also ends in disaster with the vessel at the bottom of the Atlantic. Carpathia was a Cunard Line transatlantic passenger ship, launched in 1908. Her dramatic story is one of innovation, competition, immigration, courage, shipwreck and war. To find out more Dr Sam Willis spoke with Dr Jay Ludowyke an author and academic who teaches writing at the University of the Sunshine Coast and the University of Queensland and the author of Carpathia: The extraordinary story of the ship that rescued the survivors of the Titanic. This bonus episode is an historic overview of The Cunard Line's RMS (Royal Mail Ship) Queen Mary.   The Silver King, Second Lieutenant Stanley L. Silverfield, rode this ocean liner to his war in late September 1944.  His POE was New York harbor's Brooklyn Terminal.  Stanley wrote effusively about this Atlantic crossing.  He enjoyed the simple pleasures of life as an Air Corps officer.  Cunard converted the RMS QM to a troop transport ship after the Second World War began in September 1939. The ocean liner sailed to Australia during the spring of 1940 for its conversion and began transporting Australian and New Zealand troops to England for the allied invasion operations.

Ever since the first commercials aired on radio and television, many of their product slogans have become part of our everyday life. Even today, most people can identify a product or company just by hearing them. Let me give you an example: if you were to hear, “Just do it!,” most of you would probably recognize that as Nike. And slogans have been with us for generations and continue to be part of our culture. Slogans like: Where's the beef?; Melts in your mouth, not in your hand; It's the real thing; When it absolutely, positively has to be there overnight; Don't leave home without it; and, It's finger-lickin' good, all take our minds immediately to a product or company. That's the power of an effective brand. One of the most well-known slogans ever created was for the Cunard (Kyoonard) Transatlantic Shipping Line. Chances are, you've never heard of them, but, in the 1950s, they owned the largest fleet of ships on the Atlantic, including the Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary. When jet airliners began to cross the Atlantic, the shipping company needed to tell people about the advantages and perks of traveling, instead, by ship. They soon came up with the corporate slogan, “Getting There is Half the Fun!,” which many people remember to this day, over 60 years later. Now, while this slogan may have been effective for The Cunard Line, it doesn't work for any parent who has every taken a car full of young children on vacation. Getting there is definitely NOT half the fun. Boredom and impatience doesn't take long to percolate from the backseat, and it isn't long before you hear the inevitable wail, “How much longer? Are we there yet?” And, you know, as we live out our Christian life in a hostile culture, we often get frustrated, impatient, and weary, too, and we're bound to ask God what children on road trips and trying journeys have asked for decades: Daddy, Are We There Yet? Well, stay tuned for some words of encouragement as we travel this road together. That's coming up on this episode of Living Lite Today.

The Titanic sank in the early hours of April 15th, 1912. The luxury cruise liner that some thought of as being “unsinkable” turned out to be very, very sinkable. After smashing into an iceberg on its starboard side, it took less than three hours for the Titanic to become completely submerged, and over 1500 people would be dead. And then the Titanic would remain, undisturbed, on the ocean floor, for over seven decades. So much interesting info to cover today! We’ll look at how the Titanic was designed and built, plus meet some of the people who traveled on it and some of the brave crew that manned the ship in its final moments. We’ll go minute-by-minute through the tragedy in today’s Timesuck Timeline and then we’ll step out and look into some wild conspiracy theories that some people have cooked up over the years to explain the Titanic’s sinking. Dead & Alive from The Queen Mary & Dark Harbor Experience

This week we have another special episode because I am recording live from the infamous Queen Mary in Long Beach, California! The Queen Mary’s creation and launch was nothing if not extraordinary and her story is rich with history, elegance and grandeur. From the time her construction began in 1930 in Clydebank, Scotland, the Queen Mary was destined to stand in a class all her own. Despite suffering economic setbacks during the Great Depression, which stalled construction on the ship for several years, Cunard Line spared no expense on building the Queen Mary. In this episode we’ll talk to Queen Mary Commodore Everett about its haunted history and his personal experiences with the QE2’s ghostly guests. And I’ll also speak with Steve Sheldon, Executive Producer of the Queen Mary Dark Harbor experience.    I have said this on my show before but there are so many hotels or other locations that try to deny or hide it and one of the things that I LOVE about the Queen Mary is how they embrace it. I love to hear about the things others have experienced, the nightly ghost tours and I love that you use those stories as the basis for some of the mazes in Dark Harbor! And recently re-opening the most haunted room on the ship to allow brave souls like me to spend the night!! We are going to talk more about that later but I am a definite fan. https://www.queenmary.com   Ghost Magnet Facebook Group:  https://www.facebook.com/Ghost-Magnet-with-Bridget-Marquardt-2480154975336666/   Bridget Marquardt Bridget Marquardt is best known to television audiences and pop-culture connoisseurs as the sweet and brainy star of E! From the time her construction began in 1930 in Clydebank, Scotland, the Queen Mary was destined to stand in a class all her own. Despite suffering economic setbacks during the Great Depression, which stalled construction on the ship for several years, Cunard Line spared no expense on building the Queen Mary! On May 27, 1936, the Queen Mary departed from Southampton, England embarking on her maiden voyage. She boasted five dining areas and lounges, two cocktail bars and swimming pools, a grand ballroom, a squash court and even a small hospital. The Queen Mary had set a new benchmark in transatlantic travel, which the rich and famous considered as the only civilized way to travel. She quickly seized the hearts and imaginations of the public on both sides of the Atlantic, representing the spirit of an era known for its elegance, class and style. Since her retirement from the sea as an active liner in 1967, the Queen Mary has never been more popular as an iconic Southern California attraction, hotel, and venue for special events. The ship carried some 2.2 million passengers in peacetime and 810,000 military personnel in the Second World War, but here in Long Beach, an estimated 50 million people have visited. The day the ship was launched in 1934, a well-known English psychic, Lady Mable Fortiscue-Harrison would predict, “The Queen Mary will know her greatest fame and popularity when she never sails another mile or carries another fare-paying passenger.” A compelling insight! For three years after her maiden voyage, the Queen Mary was the grandest ocean liner in the world carrying Hollywood celebrities like Bob Hope and Clark Gable, royalty like the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and dignitaries like Winston Churchill. During this time she even set a new speed record, which she held for 14 years. But when the Queen Mary docked in New York in September 1939 that would be the last time she would carry civilian passengers for many years. As World War II started, the Queen Mary's transformation into a troopship had begun. She was painted a camouflaged grey color and stripped of her luxurious amenities. Dubbed the "Grey Ghost" because of her stealth and stark color, the Queen Mary was the largest and fastest troopship to sail, capable of transporting as many as 16,000 troops at 30 knots. After the end of WWII, the Queen Mary began a 10-month retrofitting process, which would return the ship to her original glory. On July 21, 1947, the Queen Mary resumed regular passenger service across the Atlantic Ocean, and continued to do so for nearly two more decades. The increasing popularity of air travel helped signal the end of an era for the Queen Mary. By 1965 the entire Cunard fleet was operating at a loss and they decided to retire and sell the legendary Queen Mary. On October 31, 1967, the Queen Mary departed on her final cruise, arriving in Long Beach, California, on December 9, 1967. She has called Southern California her home ever since. The Queen Mary is now a floating Hotel, Attraction and Event & Wedding Venue, home to three world-class restaurants and an icon in Southern California.

On this episode of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we talk about history and hauntings of one of the greatest ships ever to sail the seas, The Queen Mary. Now docked in Long Beach, California and used as a hotel and tourist destination, the RMS Queen Mary has had an interesting past and has undergo many transformations before she became the haunted Grand Dame of the seas that she is today. Built in 1930, the construction of the ship was fraught with problems. There was a Great Depression going on, so the company went broke as she was being built. After a few years in dry dock, the Cunard Line who was building her asked the British Government for help. They did, and after forcing some corporate mergers, the Queen Mary and her sister ship were both completed. The Queen Mary was the fastest ship on the seas for several years, and was larger than the Titanic. She was a passenger and mail liner from England to the US for years, until the break of World War Two. When the war broke out, she was retrofitted from a luxury liner to a troop transport and would regularly take as many as 15,000 seamen from Australia to England to help in the war. Known as the Gray Ghost, she set a record for the most people ever moved on one cruise that she still holds to this day. The Queen Mary was so fast that Nazi U-Boats couldn’t catch her; indeed, she was so fast, she once cut another ship in half by sailing right through and cutting it in half! Once the war ended, she ran for several more years until being purchased by the city of Long Beach as a tourist attraction, which she still is today. One of the major draws to this ship now is the haunting. Time Magazine ranks The Queen Mary as one of the top ten most haunted places on earth. There are horrifying occurrences that happen in Suite B340 (which got so bad, they quit letting passengers stay there for years). There are hauntings of both pools on the ship. There is an eerie Lady in White who dances to a silent orchestra. There is the little girl with a teddy bear, the crying baby in the nursery, and the man who was cut in half by Door 13. The hauntings used to be a secret kept by the staff since their knowledge would make people not want to stay there. Now, however, it is a draw, and even though they play it up for business, the history of the ship suggests there is something to the tales of terror from within her decks.

PANEL DISCUSSION | BRITISH LIBRARY, LONDON | 24.04.17 PANEL: Professor Sir Hew Strachan (Chair) | Professor Phillips O'Brien | Dr Alice Kelly CONTEXT Throughout the First World War, peace negotiations were conducted alongside visceral military conflict. But in December 1916, with President Wilson's attempt to arbitrate, the serious push for peace began. DISCUSSION SIR HEW STRACHAN (Professor of International Relations, University of St Andrews), PHILLIPS O'BRIEN (Professor of Strategic Studies, University of St Andrews), and DR ALICE KELLY (Rt Hon Vere Sidney Tudor Harmsworth Postdoctoral Research Fellow on the History of the United States and WW1) on the US vision for peace and a new world order, including: (1) the US/British relationship, in particular, the contention that it was British propaganda that brought the US into the war in 1917, and the subsequent British missions to the US led by Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour and the press baron, Lord Northcliffe; (2) how President Wilson's peace initiative shaped the remainder of the war and influenced the terms of the ultimate peace; and (3) the legacy of the US vision for peace and a new world order in WW1 across the long 20th century. HOW THE PEACE BROKER TURNED BELLIGERENT On 1 May 1915, RMS Lusitania left New York bound for Liverpool. Aboard were 1,959 passengers and crew. Only 764 would survive the voyage. On 7 May 1915, as she rounded the south coast of Ireland, German U-boat 20 torpedoed and sank the pride of the Cunard Line in just 18 minutes. Among the dead were 123 Americans. That evening, as the news broke, Colonel Edward House, President Woodrow Wilson's right-hand man, was dining with US Ambassador Walter Hines Page in London. ‘We shall be at war within a month', House declared. But Wilson, holding fast to his vision for peace, refused to be provoked and it was not until almost two years later, in April 1917, that the US finally entered the war. By then, Wilson's attempt to arbitrate in December 1916 had failed and German provocation could no longer be ignored. Germany was waging unrestricted U-boat warfare and the Zimmerman telegram had exposed German attempts to foment war between Mexico and the US. If the US wanted to secure peace, it would have to enter the war. The peace broker had finally turned belligerent. AUDIO CLIPS from ChromeRadio's podcast drama, ENTER THE PEACE BROKER by Martyn Wade, will illustrate the panel discussion. Based on contemporary diaries, letters and newspaper reports, the drama brings alive America's journey into WW1, a compelling story of duplicity and diplomatic intrigue. Made with the support of the ROTHERMERE FOUNDATION, the production includes a selection of WW1 songs arranged and performed by mezzo-soprano JESSICA WALKER with JAMES HOLMES on piano. I’m Theo Mayer - the Chief Technologist for the Commission and your host. Before we get into the main part of the show - - Let me try to set it up: [SOUND EFFECT - WAYBACK MACHINE] We have gone back in time to January 1917. Late last year, in 1916, Woodrow Wilson ran for president under the slogan “He Kept us Out Of War” and “America First” and he won - by a slim margin. In Western  Europe, Eastern Europe, the middle east and other areas around the world -  All tied together by colonial imperialism - the war rages on! NARRATOR Not long after the election of 1916, events would unfold at a rapid pace, until the United States reached a tipping point where isolationism could no longer be an option. January 19, 1917 – Arthur Zimmerman, Foreign Secretary of the German Empire, sent a telegram to German Ambassador to Mexico, proposing an alliance between Germany and Mexico in the event of US entry into the War. ZIMMERMAN "We intend to begin on the first of February unrestricted submarine warfare. We shall endeavor in spite of this to keep the United States of America neutral. In the event of this not succeeding, we make Mexico a proposal of alliance... make war together, make peace together... and an understanding... that Mexico is to reconquer the lost territory in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona.... You will inform the President of the above... as soon as the outbreak of war with the United States of America is certain...." NARRATOR The British Admiralty, which had cracked German diplomatic cipher systems, decoded the message within hours. Seeking to influence the American government, the British provided the Americans a copy of the telegram. On the 28t h  of February, President Wilson released the telegram to the press. The appearance of the news nationwide on March 1s t  galvanized American support for entry into the war. January 31, 1917, Robert Lansing, Secretary of State, received a note from the German Ambassador to the United States. GERMAN AMBASSADOR A new situation has... been created which forces Germany to new decisions.... England is using her naval power for a criminal attempt to force Germany into submission by starvation. In brutal contempt of international law, the... powers led by England..., by ruthless pressure, compel neutral countries either to altogether forego every trade not agreeable to the Entente Powers, or to limit it according to their arbitrary decrees. From February 1, 1917, sea traffic will be stopped with every available weapon and without further notice.... NARRATOR This message from the German Ambassador directly contravened the German guarantee to Wilson   that ended unrestricted submarine warfare following the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915. Coupled with the Zimmerman telegram, Germany’s renewed aggression decisively changed American attitudes about the war.    On February 3, 1917, the United States formally ended diplomatic relations with Imperial Germany. On February 25, 1917, the Cunard Line ship Laconia was struck by German Torpedoes. Floyd Gibbons, an American correspondent for the Chicago Tribune, was on board and lived to describe the scene: FLOYD GIBBONS At 10:30 p.m., there was a muffled noise. Five sharp blasts – the signal to abandon. We walked hurriedly down the corridor ... to the lounge which was amidships. We moved fast but there was no crowding and no panic. ...we looked down the slanting side of the ship and noticed ... her water line ... was a number of feet above the waves. ... the lifeboats... rested against the side of the ship.... I could see that we were going to have difficulty in the descent to the water. ‘Lower away!’ someone gave the order and we started downward ... toward the seemingly hungry... swells. The stern of the boat was down; the bow up, leaving us at an angle of about 45 degrees.... The tiers of lights dimmed slowly from white to yellow, then to red, and nothing was left but the murky mourning of the night..... The ship sank rapidly at the stern until at last its nose stood straight in the air. Then it slid silently down and out of sight.... NARRATOR Austin Y. Hoy, a Chicago machinery company executive working in London, cabled President Woodrow Wilson after the sinking of the LACONIA: AUSTIN HOY My beloved mother and sister, passengers on the LACONIA, have been foully murdered.... I call upon my government to preserve its citizens’ self-respect and save others of my countrymen from such deep grief as I now feel. I am of military age, able to fight. If my country can use me against these brutal assassins, I am at its call. If it stultifies my manhood and my nation’s by remaining passive under outrage, I shall seek a man’s chance under another flag. NARRATOR Events abroad also served to tip American opinion. The fall of the Russian Tsar's regime on March 15, 1917 resulted in a greater moral clarity for the Allied cause: the war was now a struggle of democratic nations against autocratic empires. Despite the passions aroused by the Zimmerman telegram and the resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare, Wilson himself had no personal desire to bring the US into conflict in Europe. Wilson told a journalist off the record: WILSON If there is any alternative, for God’s sake, let’s take it! NARRATOR March 20. Wilson confers with his cabinet. They unanimously vote for War. March 21. Wilson calls Congress into special session for April the 2n  d . On the evening of April the second, 1917, President Wilson addresses a joint session of Congress asking for a Declaration of War. WILSON “While we do these momentous things, let us make very clear to all the world what our motives are. Our object, now as then, is to vindicate the principles of peace and justice as against selfish and autocratic power. Neutrality is no longer feasible or desirable where the peace of the world is involved and the freedom of its peoples, and the menace to that peace and freedom lies in the existence of autocratic governments. We have seen the last of neutrality. We are at the beginning of an age in which it will be insisted that the same standards of conduct and of responsibility for wrong done shall be observed among nations and their governments that are observed among the individual citizens of civilized states.” NARRATOR The Congress rose to its feet and applauded enthusiastically. Cheering crowds lined the streets as Wilson departed from the Capitol. As author Byron Farwell wrote: FARWELL QUOTE It was the greatest speech of Wilson’s life. At about 10:00, when the president had returned to the White House, he and his wife had dinner with friends, after which Wilson wandered into the empty cabinet room. His secretary, Joseph Tumulty, found him there: ‘Think what they were applauding,’ he said to Tumulty. ‘My message today was a message of death for our young men. How strange it seems to applaud that.’ He put his head down on the table in the Cabinet Room, and sobbed.’ NARRATOR Still, in the face of aggression, there were voices of opposition. Arkansas Senator George Norris: SENATOR NORRIS Belligerency would benefit only the class of people who will be made prosperous should we become entangled in the present war, who have already made millions..., and who will make hundreds of millions more if we get into the war. To whom does the war bring prosperity? Not to the soldier. Not to the broken hearted widow. Not to the mother who weeps at the death of her brave boy.... I feel that we are about to put the dollar sign on the American Flag.” NARRATOR The Senate passed the War Resolution with only three Republicans and three Democrats opposed. The House voted 373 for, with 50 opposed. Jeanette Rankin, the first woman to serve in Congress, and the lone female Representative, voted against the resolution. The approved Declaration of War was sent to President Wilson on April 6, 1917. At 1pm that day he signed: “Approved 6 April, 1917, Woodrow Wilson.”   Tolling of the bells 19 gun canon salute   DEBORAH YORK As the country mobilized, we leave you with the voices of two soldiers: PERSHING Major General John J. Pershing to President Woodrow Wilson, April 10, 1917:  “Dear Mr. President: As an officer of the army, may I not extend to you, as Commander-in-Chief of the armies, my sincere congratulations upon your soul-stirring patriotic address to Congress on April 2d. Your strong stand for the right will be an inspiration to humanity everywhere, but especially to the citizens of the Republic. It arouses in the breast of every soldier feelings of the deepest admiration for their leader. I am exultant that my life has been spent as a soldier, in camp and field, that I may now the more worthily and more intelligently serve my country and you. With great respect, Your obedient servant, JOHN J. PERSHING Major General, U.S. Army DEBORAH YORK And from the diary of Sergeant York serialized in  Liberty magazine in 1927: SERGEANT YORK I had no time to bother much about a lot of foreigners quarrelling and killing each other over in Europe. I just wanted to be left alone to live in peace and love. I wasn’t planning my life any other way. ... I figured that if some people in the Wolf River Valley were quarrelling... it wasn’t any of my business to go and interfere, and Europe was much further away.... I never dreamed we’d go over there to fight. So I didn’t pay much attention to it. I didn’t let it bother me until I received from the post office a little red card telling me to register for the draft. That’s how the war came to me, in the midst of all my peace and happiness and dreams, which I felt all along were too good to be true, and just couldn’t last.” THEO MAYER In the meantime, the popular music of the time begins to address the American soldier, his image and his place in the world. IF HE CAN FIGHT LIKE HE CAN LOVE, GOOD NIGHT, GERMANY! If he can fight like he can love, Oh what a soldier boy he’ll be! If he’s just have as good in the trench As he was in the park or on a bench,   Then ev’ry Hun had better run And find a great big linden tree I know he’ll be a hero ‘over there’ ‘Cause he’s a bear in any Morris chair And if he fights like he can love Why, then it’s goodnight, Germany!   Verse 2 Ev’ry single day all the papers say, Mary’s beau is, oh, so brave With his little gun, chasing ev’ry Hun He has taught them to behave Little Mary proudly shakes her head, And says, “Do you remember what I said?”   Chorus If he can fight like he can love, Oh what a soldier boy he’ll be! ANNOUNCER I Have A Rendezvous With Death (POEM: No Music or Sound) I have a rendezvous with Death At some disputed barricade, When Spring comes back with rustling shade And apple-blossoms fill the air— I have a rendezvous with Death When Spring brings back blue days and fair. It may be he shall take my hand And lead me into his dark land And close my eyes and quench my breath— It may be I shall pass him still. I have a rendezvous with Death On some scarred slope of battered hill, When Spring comes round again this year And the first meadow-flowers appear. God knows ‘twere better to be deep Pillowed in silk and scented down, Where love throbs out in blissful sleep, Pulse nigh to pulse, and breath to breath, Where hushed awakenings are dear... But I’ve a rendezvous with Death At midnight in some flaming town, When Spring trips north again this year, And I to my pledged word am true, I shall not fail that rendezvous.

Welecome to the Software Process and Measurement Cast 233 Over the past seven years at the end of every interview I have asked "what two issues would you fix and why" or some close variant of that question.  In that question each of my interviewees has left thier own mark on how I think about software process and measurment.  Over the next three weeks I am going to share three of the most popular responses from each of the last three years.   Today we begin with three segments from 2012 SPaMCAST 202 - David Marquet, Turn the Ship Around!, Agile and TesTrek PreviewsSPaMCAST 180 - Johanna Rothman, Transparency and TrustSPaMCAST 200 - Gottesdiener, Gorman, Discover to Deliver, Agile Product Planning I have also included an entry from the Daily Process Thoughts titled "Transatlantic Crossing."  Daily Process Thoughts: Transatlantic Crossing, January 30, 2013 Last year my wife took a transatlantic cruise on the Queen Mary II (Southampton to New York City) with her cousin. The crossing was made on the 100th anniversary of the the sinking of the Titanic and followed the same basic path. While the trip on Barb’s part was last second to fill in for another traveler,  the planning required  by the Cunard Line to make the crossing and meet the needs of a demanding contingent of guests is awe inspiring. By the way it is hard to conceive of what 14 tons of meat would look like piled up on the dock waiting for the ship to be loaded. Any significant mistake in planning could not only jeopardize the revenues of the Cunard Line but also potentially safety of the crew and guests.  Just think of the riot that might happen if there was no milk for people’s coffee! Planning any project requires balancing flexibility so that change can be accommodated and looking forward in an attempt to avoid risk. Barb had to rearrange a number of projects to take advantage of the opportunity. Barb’s planning techniques had to be extremely flexible. Cunard’s planning techniques did not have to be as flexible to deal with the one passenger being switched for another but it did have to show some flexibility. Agile uses techniques that include backlogs, short iterations, feedback loops and re-planning to address in a focus on flexibility and risk avoidance. Other techniques can be leveraged based on your organizations culture however regardless of how you “do it” planning is needed to increase the chances of making the crossing safely. Organizational process improvement programs might not require a plan that calls for 2.5 tons of rice but like a transatlantic crossing you will need to know where you are headed, have a good compass and know when to change direction. The Daily Process Thoughts is my project designed to deliver a quick daily idea, thought or simple smile to help you become a better change agent. Each day you will get piece of thought provoking text and a picture or hand drawn chart to illustrate the idea being presented.
