Apologies we've been out of commission for a couple weeks. Along with the cheer and merriment of the season comes flues, colds and coughs and basically our whole team was bed bound for a bit. If I still sound a bit scratchy, well hopefully it just adds to the shows creepy vibe. And having your voice drop an octave sounds good anyway right?Well let's get right into it shall we?Our guest in this episode is one of the great visionary directors currently working in horror. His work bares the signature of a director who is not only a master of his craft but also someone has has never lost touch with an almost childlike sense of imagination, as he often explores the dark side of folklore and fantasy. Similar to a filmmaker like Guillermo del Toro (so it's no surprise they have collaborated), his marriage of the fantastic and the macabre gives him a distinctive style. With his first true feature, the modern classic “Troll Hunter”, he came out guns-a-blazing and hasn't let up since. In this episode we are joined by the virtuosic director Andre Ovredal.Andre and I sat down to talk about why he chose to follow up the decidedly lighter in tone hit “Troll Hunter”, with the disturbing and almost chamber play like (not to mentioning absolutely terrifying) “The Autopsy of Jane Doe”. The challenges of adapting a beloved book like “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” for the screen and why a very brief section of the legendary Bram Stoker's Dracula about the “Last voyage of the Demeter” was a story that HAD to be told on film.Let's visit the world of the strange and the fantastic with director Andre Ovredal! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

This film is based on a specific chapter of Bram Stoker's 1897 novel, “Dracula”. It was directed by Andre Ovredal and stars Corey Hawkins, Liam Cunningham & David Dastmalchian. Captain Elliot and the crew of the Demeter voyage from Transylvania to London only to discover that the legendary vampire known as “Dracula” is also aboard the ship and slowly picks them off one by one. This film languished in development hell for nearly 2 decades until finally being put to production in 2019 with Ovredal attached to direct while actors Jude Law, Noomi Price & Ben Kingsley we're all attached to star but never fully committed to the film due the unfinished script at the time.

This week's Empire Podcast sees two genre directors step into our Interviewtrona3000 for a Paxman-like grilling from Chris Hewitt. First, Mortal director André Øvredal (as in, he's the director of Mortal; he's also mortal, we reckon, but that's irrelevant) talks Norse mythology, Stephen King and Draclier with Chris. And then actor/director Jay Baruchel talks about his blood-soaked meta-horror Random Acts Of Violence, aka How To Dismember Your Dragon, and recalls his last visit to the cinema. It was a doozy. Then, in the Podboothatron3000, Chris is joined by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer and, making his long-awaited return in the rotating fourth chair, John Nugent for an episode in which the following occurs: they exchange film facts, grumbling as they do so; they discuss the best Netflix original movies; they talk about the week's movie news (this is pre-Batfleck Returns, folks; we'll talk about that next week); and then review The One And Only Ivan, Random Acts Of Violence, and Tenet. Or, more accurately, Helen and James review Tenet, while Chris just gets increasingly confused. How confused? Picture Zoolander and Hansel trying to access computer files, and you're halfway there. Yojne.

EP 166 - Under The Influence And Ovredal: Director Spotlight on Andre Ovredal Can you believe it's almost the end of the decade? How are you guys celebrating this year? We'll probably just hang out, watch some horror movies, maybe a have a few cocktails. Hey, if you guys are looking for a good New Year's Eve cocktail, we've got you covered. Mix equal parts horror and whimsy, add a few drops of childhood memories, and a dash of Norwegian blood. In a separate glass muddle together some Jimson weed and your awkward romantic feelings for a corpse. Toss everything into a shaker full of molars, strain, and serve in a martini glass with a big toe garnish. We call it the Mai Tai Dough-ty Walker, and it goes great with our director spotlight of Andre Ovredal. The King, Ghoul, and the Mad Monkey are left clueless because their search turned up nothing. However, once they returned to the Talking Terror studio, a package was waiting for them. Inside was a movie and a note left by the Doc, "Watch this and I'll come back next week....?". So, up for discussion is the Doc's film pick; "The Autopsy of Jane Doe" from 2016 and directed by Andre Ovredal.  Will the movie point the eerie emcees into the direction of their lost co-host? Probably not but you should listen any way! Stay scared people, stay scared.

First up is Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark, directed by André Øvredal (Trollhunter, The Autopsy of Jane Doe).Four kids find a cursed book of short stories that starts coming to life. Kind of like a family-friendly version of Wes Craven's New Nightmare, but we also have to solve a convoluted ghost story. Even though this movie is sorely lacking The Green Ribbon, it's a fun watch. The effects are decently stomach-turning for PG-13 and Scary Stories profits from the nostalgia bump. 2.75 out of 5 toes.

2016 In Horror Cinema Greetings new yearlings, and welcome back to Horror Business, the podcast that will surely be one of the few things in the likely radioactive wasteland that will be 2017 to be bring you joy. This episode we look back on 2016 and what we liked and disliked about the state of horror cinema and weirdly enough it looks like horror movies were the one thing from 2016 that weren’t horrible! We begin as always by talking about some of the recent horror films we’ve seen. While technically not a horror movie, we were lucky enough to catch Shin Godzilla. We discuss some of the more horrific aspects the franchise, what makes the new one stand out from the prior entries in the franchise, and Godzilla’s increasing amounts of screen time despite claims to the contrary. We move on to Evolution, a movie that Liam enjoyed but Justin was confused by. But it’s okay because Liam is soon confused by Justin’s comparison of Evolution to not understanding Primus! Justin successfully argues that Liam has actual taste in film while he himself does not and then rambles about the size of his Criterion collection. We briefly talk about catching a screening of The Autopsy Of Jane Doe in New York City with a Q & A featuring Brian Cox, Emile Hirsch, and director Andre Ovredal. Justin discusses his viewing of Rob Zombie’s 31 and the tragedy that is Rob Zombie’s inability to make good movies despite his rich pedigree and Richard Brake’s standout performance in the film. Liam briefly talks about his viewing of the Syfy series Channel Zero. Next we talk about how we were fortunate enough to be on a couple episodes of friend of the podcast Andrew Bergeron of Vincent Price’s Laugh other podcast What Did We Just Watch? to talk about Mulholland Drive and Moon. There is a brief derailment as Justin is egged into talking about his fear and hatred of the 1992 alien abduction film Fire In The Sky before we get back on track to talk about Andrew’s podcast and how it’s so organized and focused that it makes us look like a mess. We love you Andrew, but you have shamed us! Liam briefly talks about the films Always Shine, Under The Shadow, and The Monster. Justin talks about the 2014 film Black Mountainside, and how while it is a heavy handed tribute to John Carpenter’s The Thing nonetheless it was an enjoyable film that stands on it’s own. We talk about our deal with having listeners print out five of our fliers that the wonderful Justin Miller made and put them up and if you take a picture and send us five pictures we’ll send you a free Cinepunx t-shirt!!! We’ll put the flier up on our FB page and our Twitter feed. We talk about the Cinepunx Patreon page which you can find here Justin’s top eleven list of horror films in 2016 is as follows. In no particular order after The Autopsy Of Jane Doe (which was Justin’s favorite of the year) : The Autopsy Of Jane Doe  The Witch Green Room Train To Busan Green Room Trash Fire The Monster The Conjuring 2 (which Liam hated) Clown Baskin They Look Like People  Honorable mentions are, again in no particular order… The Shallows Gateway Mind’s Eye Siren Spectral The Wailing Beyond The Gates Don’t Breathe Evolution  And finally a giant fuck you to the following movies for being horrible… Lights Out The Darkness The Blair Witch (We don’t talk about it fuuuuuuuck Phantasm: Ravager as well. No idea how that pile of shit slipped our minds this episode) Here are some films that Liam had seen this year and was fond of… Always Shine Under The Shadow We Are The Flesh The Eyes Of My Mother The Lovewench       As always thanks to everyone and anyone who checked this episode out, or shared a tweet/shared a post on FB/gave us love by recommending us to someone. Andre made a name for himself as one of Norway’s most successful directors of commercials with almost two hundred commercials for clients in Norway and abroad to his credit, as well as directing award winning short films.  Andre’s latest work is the feature, TrollHunter, a thrilling documentary style film that is both darkly comedic and suspenseful.  Filmed in the countryside of Norway, TrollHunter tells the story of a veteran hunter and fed-up government employee as he reveals the world of beasts known only to Norwegians in stories from their childhood and the students and the audience eventually believe his unlikely tales.
