Fresh off the heels of watching Robert Eggers' superbly grotesque Nosferatu, we decided to screen another, less well-regarded, Dracula film. THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER travelled swiftly through theatres, perhaps faster than warranted. It sets up the stakes and principal characters nicely and skillfully envelopes the audience in a creaky nautical atmosphere. Still, even though there was a lot to like about this Alien-Vampire mashup, it left us wanting in the way that makes it a perfect candidate for the show. Join us for a retelling of the retelling of The Last Voyage of the Demeter!
We continue our series of recent takes on the Dracula mythos by examining last year's THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER. Nestled in the first third of Bram Stoker's original novel is the tale of a ship which unknowingly carried Dracula from his homeland to London, losing crew member after crew member along the way. Until now, that specific chapter had never been given a deeper cinematic exploration. The result, directed by Andrew Ovredal, has a sleek production, competent performances, and a well-structured script. But we are joined by FoG friend Dave Courtney to debate how well the film captures the themes it's so clearly interested in.With apologies for the slightly late release, we hope you enjoy this week's episode!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Before we get down to business, we talk some movie news. Mickey Mouse has entered the public domain - sorta - and on cue a pair of horror movies and video game were announced. When the same thing happened with Winnie the Pooh, people were amused. This announcement has been met with widespread anger and we cannot figure out why.The news of a new horror prequel arriving in 2024 is no big surprise. Still, it is hard not to get excited after seeing the trailer for The First Omen. Great music and the use of reverse footage looks fantastic. The Omen is an excellent movie that often gets overlooked, and we are looking forward to seeing what the new movie will do.An episode like this one requires a disclaimer. This week's show is all about our least favorite movies of 2023, and while we may use the word “worst” interchangeably, it is not our intent to insult that work that was done by the cast or crew of any of these films. Each one is discussed in a vacuum and we understand that everyone involved has and can do great work. That being said, these movies sucked. From big budget mainstream theater releases to smaller indie films making their festival run, we talk about the movies that we enjoyed the least. It is a varied list that sees us talk about Dracula, true crime, and one of the greatest horror movies of all time. And for the first time ever, we drastically disagree about one of the worst picks. We don't know whether to dance or weep on this edition of Overlapping Dialogue, which once again continues our journey through the 90s with a pairing that would leave even the hardiest party animal crying in the club: The Last Days of Disco and American History X. But before we put on our dancing shoes, we dig into a Blue Plate Special slate celebrating the lives of Terry Funk, Bray Wyatt, and Bob Barker; mull over the status of the ongoing Hollywood strikes; and offer up some thoughts on the latest chiller from Universal Studios, The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Upon surviving the Count's subpar attempts to subdue us, we tackle two striking portraits of American whiteness while considering their traditions within the yuppie coming-of-age story and the trial-by-fire political drama respectively. Hurricane Hilary and the ensuing travel delays pushed the release of this episode back to a Saturday release versus our usual Tuesday drop, but there's four movies covered in gratitude of your patience. First up: "Jules" [00:02:48], a small film about an alien crashing a spaceship into the yard of a senior citizen and one of the most pleasant surprises of the year. Second on the docket: "The Last Voyage Of The Demeter" [00:31:59], a maritime telling of the Dracula legend. Next up: "Shortcomings" [01:02:24], an absurdly unrealistic tale of relationships in Berkeley that, in spite of how out of touch it is with reality, is delivered with unaware seriousness. And finally: "Dreamin' Wild" [01:18:03] is the pseudo-biopic of Donnie and Joe Emerson. Never heard of them? It's fine. They were obscure musicians who got a reissue on Light in the Attic 30 years later. Yes, there was a movie made about it (no shade). Finally, years later, the film version of THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER (2023) has been released. Stuck in development hell for over a decade, the idea for such a film has shifted between different stars, directors, writers, and even producers. But somehow Universal got it off the ground, bringing in director Andre Ovredal (THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE (2016) on board. When a Russian ship sets sale from Varna, Bulgaria to London, England, strange things begin to happen to the captain and crew. Members of the crew die violent deaths, others disappear, and some even say they saw a "demon" on board. Soon they wonder what really is in the cargo that they are carrying with them. The movie is based on the seventh chapter of the Bram Stoker novel, DRACULA (1897), entitled The Captain's Log. Though based off the novel, the liberties to the source material are so immense, some wonder if it really is a Dracula tale at all. Meeting up at the Dark Discussions Podcast yearly meetup in Mystic, CT, the podcast crew (and guests) give their thoughts on the movie.

This podcast was recorded during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the work being covered here wouldn't exist.SPOILER ALERT!!! THIS IS A SPOILER FILLED REVIEW OF THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETERAs iconic as Dracula is, there are not many blockbusters centered around him. The most well known ones enter the pop culture lexicon and have long lives. Except at the box office. The vampire movies that have sprung from Bram Stoker's novel are a different story. The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a take on a chapter from the original book. But it is really a story of missed opportunities. We talk about all the strange plot holes and constant teases. This includes one of the worst attempts at social commentary ever seen and the misuse of a number of great actors. We tried to judge the film on its own merits, but it's hard not to compare it to the source material. As the trailers have shown, The Last Voyage of the Demeter leans into the monster aspect of Dracula. How well did it showcase its powers? And what did we think of its sequel baiting ending? For all the bad, we actually had some good things to say. Not everyone may be a fan of one of the most debonair horror figures being turned into a mindless beast, but it looked pretty cool. Plus, there is some good gore and exploding bodies. But is it enough?
Director André Ovredal's new movie THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER adapts a single chapter of Bram Stoker's popular gothic horror novel DRACULA to the silver screen. Our hosts discuss their thoughts on the film as well as muse on some upcoming cinematic offerings in the Trailer Tapas segment of the show. Ever been on a bad ocean cruise? I guarantee it wasn't as bad as the voyage in The Last Voyage of The Demeter. You may have heard of the Demeter briefly in other Dracula movies but this movie gives you the full story. The Demeter is the ship that transported Dracula from Romania to England according to Bram Stoker's Dracula novel. In that novel, there is a small section containing the captain's log from the Demeter, telling a story of an evil killing his crew. This movie takes that small section and turns into a 2 hour movie. Corey Hawkins, from Straight Outta Compton and The Walking Dead, plays Dr. Clemens who joins the crew under Captain Eliot, played by Liam Cunningham from Game Of Thrones. Further and further into the voyage, more and more creatures are found dead with bite marks and soon the crew start becoming victims of Dracula. The doctor have to try to fight off the evil might of Dracula with the help of a girl from a Transylvanian village Dracula was keeping as a food source. Is this movie worth saving from the sleep of the undead or should you just put a stake in it's heart? Check out this spoiler-free review to find out. This also stars David Dastmalchian, Aisling Franciosi, Chris Walley, Stefan Kapicic, Jon Jon Briones, Woody Norman, Javier Botet, Martin Furulund, Nikolai Nikolaeff, Graham Turner, Andy Murray, Nicolo Pasetti. This movie opens with The Demeter making it's way to London, and today is the official release of The Last Voyage Of The Demeter... I feel this couldn't have been a better time. It's a full circle moment, but I've always honestly had so much love for this iteration of Dracula and how it was a brand new intro to the story. There's also tons of eye candy that make vampirism extremely tempting. Enjoy, folks.

Irish actor Liam Cunningham, whose latest film The Last Voyage of the Demeter, is set to release in theatres this weekend, has provided an update on one of his most popular on-screen avatars. Cunningham, who is best known for essaying the role of the fan-favourite character Ser Davos Seaworth in Game of Thrones, could reprise his role as the Onion Knight in the Game of Thrones spin off show around Jon Snow. While not much has been revealed regarding the spinoff by HBO, Kit Harrington is expected to reprise his role as Jon Snow aka the Aegon Targaryen. Cunningham revealed in a recent interview that he would love to return to the franchise. Considering Ser Davos is one of Jon's closest friends and allies, Cunningham making a comeback is not outside the realms of possibility.

***SPOILER WARNING!!! AS WITH ALL SPECIAL EDITION WE WILL BE DISCUSSING SPECIFIC PLOT POINTS***Every trailer for Renfield made a few things clear. The film was going to be silly and it was going to be bloody. Very very bloody. There are lots of great comedy-horror movies, but when the mix does not work, it makes for a bad viewing experience. We talk about how well it worked here and how it is closer to The Naked Gun than Nosferatu.Another big part of the trailers was the support group that Renfield appears to be a part of. They played a bigger part that some may expect. Even more shocking, they showcase some of the best writing in Renfield. But was it a little too much or the perfect addition to an already silly movie?Renfield does not shy away from violence and has what will end up being some of the bloodiest scenes of the year. It was like a midnight movie brought to mainstream audiences. The film definitely knows it audience, not only ramping up the violence, but giving little in the way of a backstory. It is easily one of the most refreshing decisions in cinema in recent years.Of course, the most buzz will be around Cage. The internet's favorite actor puts on another fantastic performance. We compare it to some of this other roles and gush about how Cage would be a mega star in any era. As the year comes to an end, there is little in the way of movie news. This comes us the chance to talk about some of the films we are looking forward to seeing next year. This includes a few things based on Bram Stoker's Dracula, a Child's Play movie for the younger generation, and the next installment in the Evil Dead franchise. Plus, we lose interest in a movie about a drugged up bear.Umma seems like it is going to be a movie that deals with generational trauma, mother-daughter relationships, and Korean folklore. It barely does the first two while paying lip service to the third. The cast all do a fantastic job, but is it enough to save a story that seems to have no interest in engaging the audience? We have reviewed a few movies this year that have started off one way before taking a dramatic turn and becoming something else. None of them have done a particularly good job at it. NR. 10 is the latest to attempt it. The plot follows Gunter, a man who was orphaned as a child. One day, a man whispers something in his ear and changes Gunter's life. This type of setup has been used for decades in cinema, and can often be a fun story filled with mystery and shocking revelations. Initially, it works here, as the twisting narrative involves a number of not quite shady characters living mundane lives. There is intrigue and betrayal and you never know what is going to happen next. That is certainly the case with the twist here as there is no way anyone can seeing it coming. It has no connection to the rest of the movie. As a matter of fact the rest of NR. 10 does not even factor into anything in the third act. It definitely caught us off-guard, but did we enjoy it?Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Morbidly Beautiful is your one stop shop for all your horror needs.
