This week we kick off a wonderful summer. Whether you catch the next plane to London, or take a cruise on the sea of love, in the summertime it's time to string up those party lights. This week Casey Kasem proves he's got the wholeworld in his hands as he counts down the Watermark Productions special list of the Top 40 Disappearing Acts of the Rock Era from July 7, 1973. We have a special guest this week for this special episode, that all American boy Scott Haskin. In this episode, we're joined by the wonderfully multi-talented Laura Lee, author of Saturn's Favorite Music. Laura's creative path has been as eclectic as her writing: she's the author of 21 books across biography, humorous reference, fiction, and children's literature, and has worked as a professional mime, improvisational comic, and radio announcer. These days, she splits her time between writing and traveling with ballet master class tours alongside her partner, artistic director of the Russian Ballet Foundation. Described by the San Francisco Chronicle as having “a dry, humorous tone” that makes her a “charming companion,” Laura brings warmth and wit to our conversation about her latest novel. About the Book Saturn's Favorite Music takes us back to the summer of 1992, following Clara Jane, an alternative music-loving broadcast graduate starting her first radio job at a small station in northern Michigan. While dreaming of rock-star radio fame, Clara navigates quirky small-town life, morning show banter, and the looming threat of automation replacing the human touch in broadcasting. Brimming with 90s nostalgia, the novel explores music, friendship, and how technology changes creative careers and relationships—a theme that's as timely today as ever. “Saturn's Favorite Music is a fun voyage back to the days of analog radio with all of its skipping records and clashing egos… highly relevant in the age of AI.” In This Episode
I remember when my father built his first deck. It was a small one at one side of the pool. Years later, he took it to a new level where he built one connected to the house with sliding glass doors, a grilling and dining area leading to the pool. That was decades ago, but my first experience with a deck as not simply a platform, but a living and entertainment space. Fast forward to 2025, Deck Rebellion: Revolutionary Concepts for Outdoor Living takes deck design up several notches (as the great Casey Kasem used to say) into a dimension so fascinating, it is limited only by one's imagination.Sean McAleer, founder of Deck Remodelers, winner of a plethora of prestigious awards, offers us not only a look into his own mind and skill, but a trending attitude toward decks as not only a place to enjoy a newspaper and grill burgers, but as the centerpiece of a backyard resort. We all enjoy going to 5-star hotels with beautiful outdoor deck areas, why not have one at home? This book not only let's the reader explore his or her potential with photos of McAleer's heralded work, but a series of short story testimonials from those whose backyards he and his company enchanted. The decks shown in this book not only epitomize the new wave in yard-wide reimagination but also reveal how much McAleer loves a challenge and takes true joy in improving people's lives through their homes. Why not, as he says, bring what you enjoy about the inside of your home outside? While the photos inspire imagination and offer readers a chance to think about the possibilities for their own backyard paradise, McAleer also offers practical advice to those who want to take on one of their own Deck Rebellions. He conveys what a well-conceived and quality-constructed deck can do for a home both to its aesthetic and investment valueAbout Sean McAleer: Sean McAleer, President of Deck Remodelers, is a third-generation carpenter and cabinet maker who has redefined outdoor living through visionary deck design. Under his leadership, Deck Remodelers has become a trailblazer in the industry, earning over 70 national design awards and holding the distinction of being the most award-winning deck design firm in North America since 2010. A pioneer in his field, Sean was among the first members of NADRA (North American Deck & Railing Association), where he has been actively involved for almost 15 years. His expertise has also earned him a place on Infratech's Visionary Committee, as well as a panelist spot on the Luxe Interiors & Design webinar. Beyond his groundbreaking work in deck design, Sean is an avid traveler, a passionate Harley-Davidson enthusiast, and a dedicated family man, married with four children. As technology continues to evolve, there are many jobs, careers, professions that slowly shrink in popularity and necessity, in some cases, become completely obsolete. Today's generation may never know that some of these occupations even existed, much less played such important roles in our culture. Such is the plight of the first talk show host/talent discoverer/podcast host… who, when all mixed together, would give you the… disc jockey. The radio pioneers who became synonymous with late night job shifts, long family road trips, or impromptu dance parties. For this co-host it was the iconic Casey Kasem. I can, to this day, still hear his voice as he did his weekly countdown of top hits each Saturday. But who paved the way for legends like him? Today's profile episode explores the life and times of one of radio's first and most influential voices of the radio waves; whose impact extended from behind the microphone and into movies and television. The DJ whose name and voice continue to inspire today, with the hosts who proudly stand on the shoulders of the innovators who came before them. This week on America's Podcast, we dive into the self-titled debut of Blue Murder—an album packed with enough guitar wizardry to make even your air guitar feel inadequate. But does it still rock as hard as its reputation, or is it just another relic of hairspray-fueled excess? No spoilers, but let's just say we have thoughts. We also take a moment to honor the late, great John Sykes, a guitar hero who shredded his way into rock history. His influence is undeniable, but does this album showcase his finest work? Tune in to find out! And of course, our Tracks of the Week bring the heat: Mooger channels the energy of Dreamstate's "Dayseeker." Marc gets nostalgic with Whitesnake's "Bad Boys." Jerry introduces us to Blueburst's "Vanish." Until next time, as Casey Kasem used to say—Keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars (and maybe a good distortion pedal while you're at it! #bluemurder #johnsykes #rockpodcast
Send us a textTop o' the trolling to ya! In this special Saint Patrick's Day edition of Jackalope Tales, Lisa and Charles raise a pint (of something strong) to two bands who dared to mess with Ireland's most self-serious frontman—Bono of U2. First, we dive into the legendary case of Negativland, the experimental sound collagists who poked the bear by releasing an album titled U2—complete with a bootlegged Casey Kasem meltdown—and found themselves buried in legal hell faster than you can say “cease and desist.” Then, we unravel the bizarre fate of The Midnight Suns, an upstart rock band who thought it'd be funny to stage an elaborate prank on Bono—only to end up facing unexpected consequences that not even The Edge could have predicted.Did these bands push the boundaries of parody, or did they simply learn the hard way that some Irish icons don't have a sense of humor? Pour yourself a Guinness (or something legally safer) and join us as we break down the wildest cases of Bono-provoked chaos.Support the showBecome a J-Lope and follow us on social media. Rainy night/ car interior—There are two 80s songs that are my absolute nemesis. Songs dealt to me over the radio by guys like Casey Kasem and Rick Dees on our way to or back from church. (How Rick Dees survived the 90s and early aughts onslaught of “nuts” hurled at his name is beyond me).Two songs appear in my head regularly and must be sung aloud to satisfy a tic.“On the Wings of Love,” by Jeffrey Osborne inexplicably (I didn't own the album) appears in my head daily. I only ever heard the song sandwiched between copy or commercials on Sunday mornings in 1982. I'm not sure “On the Wings of Love” ever peaked any top tens. Yet if my life were to be played off in my willing and unwilling musical obsessions, “On the Wings of Love” would be #1. Sigh.Number two is “I Love a Rainy Night,” and that ***** hit #1 on those important top musical charts that I'm just realizing I have no idea how they're measured. Okay, I'm looking at Billboard Hot 100 on Wikipedia and it says “rankings are based on sales (physical and digital), online streaming, and radio airplay in the U.S.” I feel like that could be juiced on the streaming and radio side to tilt numbers, right? Actually why am I conspiracy-ing this I have no idea what I'm talking about and who cares. Why wouldn't “I Love a Rainy Night” appear in my head every time it is both raining and nighttime? The song is literally about loving a crying night sky. And it's snappy af.I, too, love a rainy night.
Top 5 all time, Slackers!Ever wonder why we have always been "list" oriented - or maybe that's just me? "Top 5" this or "Top 10" that - from Casey Kasem's American Top 40, MTV's Top 20 Countdown, later TRL, to Rolling Stone Magazine's Top 500 series, lists have been a regular part of our lives. With the advent of the internet, many of us were the early adopters of "listicles" on web forums where we chimed in on "Top 5 Tag Teams" or "Top 5 Video Games". Fast forward 20+ years and the list format drives everything from Netflix & Spotify algorithms, to targeted ads. In fact, lists likely drive commerce! For many of us, lists are what drives debates, and as long as people keep it civil, this has always been our way of communicating. Back in the day it could be debates on "best running backs", or "best metal guitarist". It's all subjective but that's what makes it fun. There's also some talk about the Big Game, Boston sports, and the many opinions on the Half TIme show.
Description: In this thought-provoking conversation, Jen and Amy speak with “poet laureate of the ordinary” Kelly Corrrigan about the valuable lessons from life she's reflecting on in this season: the significance of saying hard things, the power of listening and understanding in relationships, observations from parenting and from a career as a writer, podcaster and storyteller, and the importance of participating in democracy, regardless of who is in power. In this episode, which was recorded on Election Day 2024 (prior to knowing the outcome) Kelly uses her trademark wit and steadfast wisdom to offer listeners evergreen words of encouragement for our political landscape and for our lives in whole. It’s that time of year once again. I’ve spent weeks going through all of the new releases of the past 12 months, and tonight I unveil what I have decided are the 40 best albums of 2024. What a great year! Just like the last few years, my initial list was right around 100 different albums. But I was also more organised than usual. I actually kept a spreadsheet this year of the releases that potentially could make an appearance. Just like Casey Kasem, here are the results in “countdown” order: To see the actual list of best albums, go to https://scotthudson.blogspot.com/2024/12/the-ledge-648-hudsons-best-of-2024.html

The History of the Radio DJ The radio disc jockey, commonly known as the DJ, has a rich history rooted in the evolution of radio broadcasting and popular culture. The role of the DJ has transformed dramatically over the decades, shaping and reflecting societal changes in music, technology, and communication. The Birth of the Radio DJ: 1920s-1930s The concept of a radio DJ emerged in the early 20th century, shortly after the invention of radio broadcasting. In the 1920s, radio stations primarily focused on live programming, such as news, lectures, and music performed by live bands. However, as phonograph records gained popularity, stations began to experiment with playing pre-recorded music. The term "disc jockey" was first coined in the 1930s by radio commentator Walter Winchell, combining "disc" (referring to records) and "jockey" (a rider or operator). Early DJs played an essential role in introducing audiences to recorded music, often providing commentary and curating selections to entertain listeners. The Golden Age: 1940s-1950s The role of the radio DJ expanded significantly during the 1940s and 1950s, an era often referred to as the golden age of radio. DJs like Martin Block, who hosted the popular "Make Believe Ballroom" on New York's WNEW, pioneered the art of creating a personal connection with listeners. Block's conversational style and his ability to simulate a live music venue using pre-recorded tracks revolutionized radio. During this period, DJs became cultural tastemakers, promoting emerging genres such as rhythm and blues and early rock and roll. Figures like Alan Freed gained national fame for their enthusiastic promotion of rock music, helping break racial barriers in the music industry by introducing black artists to white audiences. Freed's "Moondog Rock and Roll Party" in the 1950s is credited with popularizing the term "rock and roll," cementing the DJ's role in shaping music history. The Rise of Personality DJs: 1960s-1970s By the 1960s, radio had become more competitive, and DJs began emphasizing their personalities to stand out. This era saw the rise of "Top 40" radio formats, where DJs played a carefully curated list of the most popular songs. Radio personalities like Wolfman Jack and Casey Kasem became household names, blending humor, storytelling, and vibrant on-air personas with their musical expertise. During the 1970s, FM radio gained prominence over AM radio, allowing DJs to adopt freer, more experimental formats. Album-oriented rock (AOR) stations gave DJs the freedom to play entire records and explore deeper cuts, appealing to more niche audiences. This period also marked the emergence of specialized DJs for genres like country, jazz, and disco. The Modern Era: 1980s-Present The role of the DJ continued to evolve with the advent of digital technology and the internet. In the 1980s and 1990s, DJs transitioned to digital formats, using CDs and later MP3s to expand their libraries. Radio consolidation in the 1990s introduced more uniform programming, but it also made room for syndicated shows hosted by iconic DJs like Howard Stern and Rush Limbaugh. In the 21st century, the rise of streaming platforms and podcasts transformed how DJs interact with audiences. Many DJs now operate across multiple platforms, blending traditional radio with digital content. While their role has shifted, radio DJs remain vital curators of culture, bringing music, stories, and community to listeners worldwide.

Send us a textEveryone knows and loves Creedence Clearwater Revival. Their run of hits at the end of the '60's, and their enduring popularity, has rarely been equaled. Not so well-known is the story of the clashes that caused their run to end so abruptly. We take a look at how the band split and the many personal and legal issues that led to it. It ain't pretty! Well, we also kept our promise and listened to the new Coldplay album, “Moon Music”. How did it sound to us? Regular listeners won't be surprised at our reaction! In Rock News, we look some more at the issues surrounding Diddy, and look at the problems with the "stage hole" in Melbourne. Episode 308 - A Long Distance Dedication, Shedding A Tear For Snuggles RUNDOWN Mitch and Hotshot Scott, travel through Grand Island, Nebraska, the birthplace of Henry Fonda and home to the Nebraska State Fair. From "On Golden Pond" and TV personality Dick Cavett, to "American Top 40," the guys reminisce on some true icons such as Casey Kasem. The Seattle Seahawks' recent performance against the Atlanta Falcons 34-14 takes them to first place in the NFC West. Highlights include Gino Smith's performance and his ability to evade pressure and make key plays. Diving deeper into the Seahawks Falcons blowout, Mitch, Jacson, and Brady discuss the improved performance of the Seahawks' defense, which held the Falcons to just 14 points despite allowing over 150 yards rushing and struggling with tackling, especially against Falcons' running back Bijan Robinson. The Seahawks' defense also created key turnovers, including a game-changing strip sack and defensive touchdown. Mitch and CBS College Football Analyst Rick Neuheisel discuss Alabama's struggles, though Rick maintains his confidence in their ability to reach the SEC Championship game, acknowledging they'll need to avoid turnovers and rely on defensive leadership. He also addresses Texas's recent loss, suggesting they need to prove themselves after facing tougher competition. The conversation shifts to officiating, with Rick expressing frustration over inconsistent calls and advocating for a centralized officiating system for college football. Rick also comments on the Army-Navy rivalry, noting the possibility of the teams playing back-to-back in the AAC Championship and then the Army-Navy game, which he finds unusual. Mitch and Christian Capel discuss the University of Washington Huskies' football season under Coach Jedd Fisch, focusing on their 4-3 record. The conversation touches on Fisch's coaching style, which Christian describes as more professional and NFL-like compared to former coach Kalen DeBoer. They also address Fisch's open comments on NIL deals and the financial disparities between schools like Ohio State, Oregon, and others.
