In this episode we will continue the discussion from the previous episode regarding saints being the temple of the LORD, as God desires to dwell inside of people and not buildings of man. This episode will look at the examples of the early church and where they met. The did not go to the temple or a church building to fellowship, but they met in houses. Is your church a safe place? That sounds like such a rude question, doesn't it? But I only ask because I love the church so much! Study after study shows church attendance declining, but I want to see our churches regain the central role they once held in our communities, where people saw them as safe and trustworthy havens for everyone. Welcome to another episode of The Unlovely Truth. I'm your host, private investigator Lori Morrison. Join me for another captivating true crime story, where physical, spiritual, and emotional safety takeaways are waiting for us. If you are listening, I believe you have a unique calling—to become a different kind of PI, not a typical private investigator, but a person of impact! This is Season 4, Episode 44. We are going to flip the script today. Self publishing expert, founder of Beatitudes Publishing LLC and Andre Lende is going to ask me some questions about my newly released book, “Reclaiming Sanctuary: Enhancing Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual Safety in Our Churches”. Feeling unsure about taking the first step? That's perfectly okay. This training is crafted to be effective at any stage of your journey. Immediate positive changes are within your grasp, and, most importantly, you'll have the flexibility to customize solutions to your church's unique needs. I'll be your guide throughout, supporting you in this crucial endeavor. Together, we can reclaim sanctuary not just within our buildings but also in our communities. 1 Samuel 17:32-37 TLB “Don't worry about a thing,” David told him. “I'll take care of this Philistine!” “Don't be ridiculous!” Saul replied. “How can a kid like you fight with a man like him? You are only a boy, and he has been in the army since he was a boy!” But David persisted. “When I am taking care of my father's sheep,” he said, “and a lion or a bear comes and grabs a lamb from the flock, I go after it with a club and take the lamb from its mouth. If it turns on me, I catch it by the jaw and club it to death. I have done this to both lions and bears, and I'll do it to this heathen Philistine too, for he has defied the armies of the living God! The Lord who saved me from the claws and teeth of the lion and the bear will save me from this Philistine!” Saul finally consented, “All right, go ahead,” he said, “and may the Lord be with you!” A true sanctuary isn't just a building. It's the community that inhabits the building. There were threats to the flocks that David tended, and there are threats to our flocks today. David says that when a predator comes after a lamb from his flock, he goes after it! He sees what needs to be done and he does it. Part of making our churches true sanctuaries is to recognize that each one of us needs to have David's attitude. He doesn't look at how intimidating Goliath is, any more than he worried about bears or lions. Each in its own way was a threat and David was willing to be responsible to take care of threats. I hope that each one of us will take a look around at our churches and see where there may be physical, emotional, or spiritual threats. If you need a bit of help doing that, I hope you'll grab my book. There's a link in the show notes for where to grab your copy. And stay tuned to be one of the first to find out when the video training that dives even deeper becomes available. Let me know what you think! Sunday night, President M. Russell Ballard of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints passed away at the age of 95. Something many people many not know about President Ballard is how he influenced the artwork displayed in church buildings. Carol Mikita, religion and arts reporter for KSL TV, explains how Ballard brought a renewed focus on Jesus Christ.
Many faith leaders have signified their commitments to climate action. For example, Pope Francis of the Catholic Church penned the Laudato Si, critiquing consumerism and irresponsible development and calls on people for swift and unified global action. The pope has also committed to net zero by 2050. The Church of England has also committed to net zero by 2030. Their plan includes reducing emissions from Cathedrals, churches, dioceses, and schools.Rowan Williamson, when he was the Archbishop of Canterbury, launched the second phase of the Tyndall Centre back in 2006, speaking to us about how climate change is a moral issue. According to World Vision, faith has great potential in addressing the climate emergency. According to Pew Research Center, 84% of the world's population or 8/10 people identify with a religious group. This is an opportunity for religions to transform their communities in different ways to help in climate action. For this episode we have Chris Walsh from the University of Manchester and Rachel Sowerby from the Church of England to talk to us more about the role of faith/religion in climate action.Chris has been at the Tyndall Centre in Manchester for 6 years working on a variety of projects, his work with churches began with the UK Climate Resilience Programme working as an embedded researcher in the Church of England Cathedrals and Church Buildings co-producing climate resilience guidance for churches across the country. He has also since worked with Salford Catholic diocese and the Guardians of Creation group to create a decarbonisation guide for places of worship. For him climate action is a key part of his faith, and a lot of his research interests and work stem from that.Rachel is an affiliate researcher with the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research as part of her role as the Bishop's Environmental Research Officer for the Bishop of Norwich Graham Usher. Bishop Graham is the lead Bishop for the environment for the Church of England. Rachel holds an MSc in Environmental Science from the University of East Anglia. Her areas of interest include behaviour change, carbon reduction and fuel poverty. She currently aids the environmental work of the Church including the pathway to Net Zero, biodiversity (particularly on Church land) and engaging with the wider public on climate related issues.Music by BenSound

5 Leadership Questions Podcast on Church Leadership with Todd Adkins
In this episode of the 5 Leadership Questions podcast, Todd Adkins and Chandler Vannoy are joined by Dave Milam who serves as the Vice President of Strategic Design at Visioneering Studios. With over 20 years of experience serving churches as well as non-profits, Dave brings a vast level of experience when it comes to helping people create places that not only look visually appealing design-wise but also educates on how your building can communicate your unique vision and story. They also discuss the unique challenges facing churches today when it comes to utilizing their meeting spaces and Dave shares how church leaders can take their space from where they are to where they want to be. BEST QUOTES “You should be able to look at a church and tell what they value. But you can also look at the building and know what they're trying to value.” – Dave Milam “I think the things that the American church values right now is very different than what we valued 20 years ago. The buildings we're living in right now were created 20 years ago. There is this tension that we're wrestling with where 20 years ago, we valued the Sunday morning experience where everybody came in and the building was designed to flip services so seats would be opened back up and parking spaces would free up as well.” – Dave Milam “We're great at saying stuff. But eventually you have to deliver on the dream that you just presented. It's great to say this is our value, but how does that value live itself out in the environment and the hallways?” – Dave Milam “A lot of churches are being very intentional about meeting places for conversation to take place. They usually have space for kids, they have the space for seating in the auditorium, but where are the people going to pause and have a 15-minute conversation? We want those to happen because if they can have those conversations, they are more likely to connect to a small group or go grab lunch with somebody. At that point, they are engaging with the church.” – Dave Milam “If you look at the most engaging environments in your community, a lot of times they have great engaging outdoor spaces. Whether it's the restaurants with the outdoor porch or the coffee shop, they are intentional about what's happening between the parking lot and the building. Those spaces, believe it or not, per square foot amount of money it takes to build those spaces are super small compared to the cost of building a new building. Double your lobby by being intentional about outdoor spaces.” – Dave Milam “One of the critical mistakes that we see lots of churches across the country making is that they have their building, and they're like, there's no possible way that this building could be cool or functional. So, their initial gut reaction is to build new, start over, and trash the whole thing. My favorite projects are the ones where we have limitations, and we get to create great space out of current constraints. Those end up being the coolest and most unique places.” – Dave Milam RECOMMENDED RESOURCES A Beautiful Constraint by Mark Barden and Adam Morgan Visioneering Studios

Have you ever walked to a church building and wondered, "what's all this for?" Sure, they serve their purpose for our gathering, but we also spend nearly 25% of our church resources on properties that remain largely unused. In this episode from our series on stewardship, we talk about the church building as both our end goal and our measure for success. We challenge our listeners to critically think about their churches and be agents of change by starting or continuing this important discussion. This is not a plea to rid us of church buildings, but rather a much needed push for the church to take seriously what it means to steward well.FOLLOW ME ON INSTA:https://www.instagram.com/piercewestfallSUBSCRIBE ON YOUTUBE:https://www.youtube.com/c/PierceWestfallFOLLOW ME ON TWITTER:https://twitter.com/piercewestfallSUBSCRIBE TO MY FRIEND SANCTIFIED PUNK:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmaBZZdz7-Ez8mAnpepIbngLEARN MORE ABOUT A JESUS MISSION:www.ajesusmission.org*Note our thoughts are not representative of A Jesus Mission as a whole.
