We are back! And I'm spilling all the “T” on where the 2024 Creek Cup is and where our 2024 October Tournament will be hosted!! I sit down with Kathy Hart Wood, a New Jersey-based golf instructor and confidence coach who helps players overcome the mental obstacles that interfere with performance. We get into how our brains can be either our biggest asset or biggest barrier in golf, discussing the importance of effective instruction and how it can be tailored to resonate with different learners. “The fastest way to get better is to manage your mind first,” says Kathy. “Don't wait to become a certain handicap before you decide to work on your brain and how you think out on the course. Work on it now.” Kathy and I dive into her three biggest takeaways on caddying for USGA events: being prepared mentally for the pace of play, understanding group dynamics, and setting up your course conditions. Maintaining efficiency on the course is largely a matter of being mindful of time taken between shots and getting familiar with the personalities and play styles of slower players in the group. For USGA tournaments specifically, Kathy brings up the “one butt rule” which states that in a player and caddy team, only one person can be seated in the cart at any given time. This means if the player is sitting down, the caddy cannot. Violating this rule can potentially lead to penalties. On the other hand, it can contribute to cooperation, particularly in deciding who gets the single cart in a group. About the Guest: Kathy Hart Wood is ranked as one of LPGA Teaching and Club Professional's Top 50 LPGA Teachers. She is the creator of The Groove, a golf instruction membership site that offers a resource for golfers learning and improving in the game. Kathy is also a Confidence Coach who helps players overcome the mental obstacles that interfere with performance. She offers coaching in group workshops and individual formats. T-Time After-Show with Kim Eaton We discuss… How to deal with someone in your group who is playing on the slower side, in order to maintain pace of play. How strict the USGA tends to be regarding pace of play. Our thoughts on arguments over the single cart at USGA events. What players discussed at the clubhouse during stroke play and match play following Kim's round. How Kim's golf game changed following her recent injuries. Greenside bunker shots. How to qualify for the USGA U.S. Senior Women's Amateur Golf Championship. In this uninterrupted conversation with Matt Ginella, Whaley shares her thoughts on the industry, awareness, leadership, timing and why she's relentlessly trying to increase the number of women who are working within the game of golf. “I believe if you can see it, you can be it,” says Whaley. “We need more women promoted, we need more women elevated and we need more clubs thinking about women running their facilities.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For my money, building a successful career on the PGA Tour where you earn enough money that you're not worried about your next check, where you're not consistently losing your card, and you're able to control your schedule, is as tough as making it any sport out there. There are no guaranteed contracts. There are no drafts, trades, or free agencies. There's you and your game vs. the best players in the world. And if you don't play well enough, your career is over. So if you manage to put together 10+ years on the PGA Tour that include 3 wins, you have a career that a lot of tour players would love to have. And if you know where Jim Herman came from and his path to the tour, his career is even more impressive. Jim always aspired to be on the PGA Tour, so he left college and hit the mini-tours. Each fall he'd go to PGA Tour Qualifying School, and for six years in a row, he failed to make it to the final stage and get out at least to the Nationwide Tour, now the Korn Ferry Tour. In between trips to Q school, he worked as a Golf Professional doing all of the duties that so many of us do each and every day, running clinics, placing orders, teaching lessons, and everything else. And that's where I met Jim. In 2006 and 2007, we were Assistant Professionals together in New Jersey and at that time, while Jim still felt strongly about chasing his dream of making it to the tour, reality was getting close to setting in. Was life going to be playing and competing as a Club Professional and always wishing his dream came true? Or could he actually make it out there? In 2007, he finally made it through. He had status on the Nationwide Tour. A couple years later, he notched a win on that tour and made it to the big leagues. There were plenty of bumps in the road that ensued, lots of ups and downs, lessons learned, and as Jim says...definitely some luck too. But as we enter the 2021 PGA Tour season, he's still out there. He's exempt for two more seasons after his third career win last summer and at this point, life is good. He's as humble as they come and that's why he's easy to root for. I hope after this conversation you become a fan as well. We get into some great insight into how he's handled these pressure situations that feel like life or death at the time. He's a throwback to a former era before players relied on data, stats, and a coach standing behind them 24/7. He's proof that there are a lot of different ways to get it done out there, and more proof that through hard work, belief, and persistence, dreams can come true.www.golfprofessionalgrowth.comAre you using Golf Genius Software for your event management? www.golfgenius.com
I love getting to know people who are obsessed with golf. Laz Versalles is one such person. Laz is a former club professional who now writes about the game for outlets such as The Golfer's Journal, Golf.com, and Deadspin. Although we've never met in person(we are hoping to change that soon) I feel like we were able to talk like old pals. Laz and I have exchanged many notes over Twitter in recent years(usually triggered by some mutual admiration) and I'm thrilled that we got to have an extended chat in this episode. Laz is truly one of golf's most interesting personas these days and I highly recommend giving him a follow on Twitter( @laz_versalles). He also makes his voice heard over on No Laying Up's message board called The Refuge. In our discussion, we talked about his family migration from Cuba to Minnesota, how he landed in California, and why you should never overlook strip malls for international cuisine. There was some golf talk too of course. I feel fortunate that golf Twitter has allowed me to know folks like Laz and I greatly appreciate that he took some time to catch up on our shared love for the game. Enjoy the show! In this episode Clay Scroggins, author of "How to Lead When You're Not in Charge", walks us through the four behaviors that he’s pinpointed to be able to cultivate influence when you don’t have the title, while preparing you to succeed when the time comes and that title is yours. This truly is one of the most important episodes we’ve done, because this information isn’t really taught in our business, but it can really help aspiring leaders in our industry to improve and make an impact. Clay’s four behaviors are an outline on how to truly become an “A” player at your club and someone that stands out from the pack. Follow them, and you'll be on the path to success. And for those listening that are in a position where we often coach and mentor younger professionals in this business, Clay’s information provides a great framework to help guide us through that process. You can find out more about Clay at www.clayscroggins.com and pick up his book “How to Lead When You’re Not in Charge” on his site or on Amazon.

In many ways Suzy Whaley is just another Golf Professional. She struggles with many of the same challenges that PGA Professionals face every day. Parts of her story sound the same as many, many others. But on the other hand….Suzy is the head of the largest organization in sports, and not to mention, the first woman to ever do that. She holds one of the most powerful and influential positions in the game of golf. She’s a trail blazer. Not only has she played in LPGA tour events, but she played in a PGA Tour event. She’s probably done more media interviews than any PGA Professional in history. In part one of our conversation, we tackle a couple of age old issues with PGA Professionals. Time management and work-life balance. If you’ve been following along, you’ve heard about these topics on this podcast before. Partly because these issues are nearly universal in our business. And because they’re probably not addressed with practical solutions often enough. So what do you do if you get 600 emails a day? How do you handle the stresses of raising a family and succeeding in this industry? Suzy shares her methods and what’s helped her over the course of her career along with plenty of other great insights.
“I walked into the library of this pre-school, and found life. I saw joy, and children learning and playing, and I knew that I wanted to be around that…It was a defining moment for me.” (https://golfyeah.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Headshot.jpg) Kate Tempesta Founder, Owner and President of Fun Urban Golf Academy New York City and Montauk, Long Island As you can see, part of Kate Tempesta’s title at the Urban Golf Academy includes “President of Fun.” In fact, you don’t have to dig too deeply into her website to believe that she really does enjoy her life’s work. And I suspect that the source of that happiness is based on the fact that she’s combined two of the things she enjoys most in life. And those would be her love of children, and her love for the game of golf…which also seems to be a recipe for her success in business. Kate Tempesta’s education, and her early career, focused on exercise science and fitness. She later transitioned to the educational arena where she created and taught the movement education program at St. Thomas More Play Group for ten years. After becoming an LPGA Teaching and Club Professional, she founded the Urban Golf Academy, located in the heart of New York City. (https://golfyeah.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/IMG_7368.jpeg) According to Kate, “Children are always my source of daily inspiration.” With Kate at the helm over the past 12 years, UGA has delivered the joy of golf to at least 1,000 children each year. Most recently, Kate and her team have developed the Birdie Basics and Birdie Basics Pro boxes; a joint curriculum, lecture series, and utility kit that gives parents, teachers, and professional coaches the tools and access to implement UGA’s proven methods designed to turn their children and students into lifelong golfers…but more importantly, to empower them as individuals. Kate has consistently been recognized by Golf Digest magazine as one of the best women teachers in the game of golf (which is even more remarkable, given that she was 30 years-old when she started playing.) She’s spoken on several panels about growing the game of golf, including the Inaugural PGA of America’s Junior Golf Summit, as well as the Youth & Family Golf Summit at a recent Merchandise PGA Show. Additionally, the PGA of Canada invited Kate to take part in their professional development series, offering Canadian PGA members the opportunity to learn some of the best practices of UGA. These include UGA’s trademark “Birdie-isms”; which are effective and engaging metaphors that take the complex physical, mental, and emotional concepts of golf and make them both accessible and memorable for children. Kate resides on the Upper West Side of New York City. In her spare time, you can find Kate kickboxing, swinging a sword and planning how UGA can positively effect children the world over. Kate believes in leaving each day a little better off than when it started…and I’m confident that hearing what she has to say will brighten your day. Show Highlights: Kate’s lost sense of purpose and disconnection with “her tribe” during her early years in New York City The combination of circumstances that enabled Kate to find her true calling in life Why Kate believes that play is such an important part of learning and personal development for children How the Urban Golf Academy got started, and how it’s grown over the past 12 years The concept and mission underlying the Birdie Basics program What the USGA and PGA should be doing to grow interest in the game of golf at an early age The common elements found in golf, kick boxing and sword fighting Why the mind / body connection is essential in the game of golf Notable Quotes: On how children learn: “Academics, play, and learning are not mutually exclusive. Play is the method for teaching, and learning is the...

While Kelly Sheehan might be the lone contestant currently not competing on the professional circuit, she plans to channel her 10 years of experience as a certified PGA of America and LPGA teaching professional to overcome the various challenges facing her. After graduating from Florida Southern College with a degree in sports management, her career path took her to the business side of golf. As Big Break Sandals Resorts’ oldest contestant, Sheehan says, “I wanted to earn success in the business world before attempting to play professionally.” Her resume is living proof. Sheehan is a dual Class A Member of the PGA of America and the LPGA Teaching and Club Professional division, and has received numerous awards during her career, including LPGA Golf Professional of the Year, PGA Merchandiser of the Year, and was the first female head golf professional within the Marriott / Ritz-Carlton family (Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, Fla.). She believes her success on the business side of golf gives her a mental edge on the course. Sheehan began playing golf at 12, when her father suggested lessons with a local female PGA Professional. Shortly thereafter, she chose golf as an elective class in grade school. When she defeated all of the boys after her first class, she realized she would play golf the rest of her life. She excelled at high school golf in Wisconsin, earning the Wisconsin Junior Player of the Year at 17. She was awarded a golf and academic scholarship to Florida Southern College, garnering 2nd Team All-America honors during the 1998-99 season. Sheehan competed in three NCAA Championships and took third place individually her junior year, breaking the record low score for the tournament on the final day. She also qualified for the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Public Links her junior year of college, and competed in several Duramed FUTURES Tour events as an amateur. Currently, she is a teaching professional at Reunion Resort and Club in Orlando.Click here for the Deal of the Week courtesy of Golflandwarehouse.com use promo code "GTR" for BIG discounts!
