“Just because your brain offers up a thought does not mean you have to think it.”   LPGA Teacher and Confidence Coach Kathy Hart Wood joins us live from the 2023 Dallas Shootout at Stonebriar Country Club to talk all about calibrating your mindset for peak golf performance!   Our brain generates a staggering number of thoughts every single day. There's no escaping them. What does make a difference is how we choose to react to those thoughts.   Drawing from her own career, Kathy highlights how realigning our focus towards productive thoughts can help overcome fear and shame as a golfer. You'll gain practical advice on strengthening your mind for a round, including the art of setting positive intentions and eliminating negativity.   Next, we tackle the importance of managing your mental energy when faced with challenging holes. Kathy explains how focusing purely on controllable factors can lead to better performance. She discusses strategies to conserve mental energy, avoid worrying about external factors like weather or partner performance, and maintain a confident mindset before, during, and after a game.   Finally, Kathy touches on the importance of keeping a consistent pre-shot routine, as well as the secrets to keeping first-team jitters at bay and overcoming anxieties about your self-image while on the course.   About Kathy Hart Wood   Kathy Hart Wood is ranked as one of LPGA Teaching and Club Professional's Top 50 LPGA Teachers. She is the creator of The Groove, a golf instruction membership site that offers a resource for golfers learning and improving in the game. Kathy is also a Confidence Coach who helps players overcome the mental obstacles that interfere with performance. She offers coaching in group workshops and individual formats. We are back! And I'm spilling all the “T” on where the 2024 Creek Cup is and where our 2024 October Tournament will be hosted!! I sit down with Kathy Hart Wood, a New Jersey-based golf instructor and confidence coach who helps players overcome the mental obstacles that interfere with performance. We get into how our brains can be either our biggest asset or biggest barrier in golf, discussing the importance of effective instruction and how it can be tailored to resonate with different learners. “The fastest way to get better is to manage your mind first,” says Kathy. “Don't wait to become a certain handicap before you decide to work on your brain and how you think out on the course. Work on it now.” Kathy and I dive into her three biggest takeaways on caddying for USGA events: being prepared mentally for the pace of play, understanding group dynamics, and setting up your course conditions. Maintaining efficiency on the course is largely a matter of being mindful of time taken between shots and getting familiar with the personalities and play styles of slower players in the group. For USGA tournaments specifically, Kathy brings up the “one butt rule” which states that in a player and caddy team, only one person can be seated in the cart at any given time. This means if the player is sitting down, the caddy cannot. Violating this rule can potentially lead to penalties. On the other hand, it can contribute to cooperation, particularly in deciding who gets the single cart in a group. About the Guest: Kathy Hart Wood is ranked as one of LPGA Teaching and Club Professional's Top 50 LPGA Teachers. She is the creator of The Groove, a golf instruction membership site that offers a resource for golfers learning and improving in the game. Kathy is also a Confidence Coach who helps players overcome the mental obstacles that interfere with performance. She offers coaching in group workshops and individual formats.   T-Time After-Show with Kim Eaton  We discuss… How to deal with someone in your group who is playing on the slower side, in order to maintain pace of play. How strict the USGA tends to be regarding pace of play. Our thoughts on arguments over the single cart at USGA events. What players discussed at the clubhouse during stroke play and match play following Kim's round. How Kim's golf game changed following her recent injuries. Greenside bunker shots. How to qualify for the USGA U.S. Senior Women's Amateur Golf Championship. “I walked into the library of this pre-school, and found life. I saw joy, and children learning and playing, and I knew that I wanted to be around that…It was a defining moment for me.” (https://golfyeah.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Headshot.jpg)   Kate Tempesta Founder, Owner and President of Fun Urban Golf Academy New York City and Montauk, Long Island As you can see, part of Kate Tempesta’s  title at the Urban Golf Academy includes “President of Fun.” In fact, you don’t have to dig too deeply into her website to believe that she really does enjoy her life’s work. And I suspect that the source of that happiness is based on the fact that she’s combined two of the things she enjoys most in life. And those would be her love of children, and her love for the game of golf…which also seems to be a recipe for her success in business. Kate Tempesta’s education, and her early career, focused on exercise science and fitness. She later transitioned to the educational arena where she created and taught the movement education program at St. Thomas More Play Group for ten years. After becoming an LPGA Teaching and Club Professional, she founded the Urban Golf Academy, located in the heart of New York City. (https://golfyeah.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/IMG_7368.jpeg) According to Kate, “Children are always my source of daily inspiration.” With Kate at the helm over the past 12 years, UGA has delivered the joy of golf to at least 1,000 children each year. Most recently, Kate and her team have developed the Birdie Basics and Birdie Basics Pro boxes; a joint curriculum, lecture series, and utility kit that gives parents, teachers, and professional coaches the tools and access to implement UGA’s proven methods designed to turn their children and students into lifelong golfers…but more importantly, to empower them as individuals. Kate has consistently been recognized by Golf Digest magazine as one of the best women teachers in the game of golf (which is even more remarkable, given that she was 30 years-old when she started playing.)  She’s spoken on several panels about growing the game of golf, including the Inaugural PGA of America’s Junior Golf Summit, as well as the Youth & Family Golf Summit at a recent Merchandise PGA Show. Additionally, the PGA of Canada invited Kate to take part in their professional development series, offering Canadian PGA members the opportunity to learn some of the best practices of UGA. These include UGA’s trademark “Birdie-isms”; which are effective and engaging metaphors that take the complex physical, mental, and emotional concepts of golf and make them both accessible and memorable for children. Kate resides on the Upper West Side of New York City. In her spare time, you can find Kate kickboxing, swinging a sword and planning how UGA can positively effect children the world over. Kate believes in leaving each day a little better off than when it started…and I’m confident that hearing what she has to say will brighten your day. Show Highlights:  Kate’s lost sense of purpose and disconnection with “her tribe” during her early years in New York City The combination of circumstances that enabled Kate to find her true calling in life Why Kate believes that play is such an important part of learning and personal development for children How the Urban Golf Academy got started, and how it’s grown over the past 12 years The concept and mission underlying the Birdie Basics program What the USGA and PGA should be doing to grow interest in the game of golf at an early age The common elements found in golf, kick boxing and sword fighting Why the mind / body connection is essential in the game of golf Notable Quotes:  On how children learn: “Academics, play, and learning are not mutually exclusive. Play is the method for teaching, and learning is the...

While Kelly Sheehan might be the lone contestant currently not competing on the professional circuit, she plans to channel her 10 years of experience as a certified PGA of America and LPGA teaching professional to overcome the various challenges facing her. After graduating from Florida Southern College with a degree in sports management, her career path took her to the business side of golf.  As Big Break Sandals Resorts’ oldest contestant, Sheehan says, “I wanted to earn success in the business world before attempting to play professionally.” Her resume is living proof.  Sheehan is a dual Class A Member of the PGA of America and the LPGA Teaching and Club Professional division, and has received numerous awards during her career, including LPGA Golf Professional of the Year, PGA Merchandiser of the Year, and was the first female head golf professional within the Marriott / Ritz-Carlton family (Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, Fla.).  She believes her success on the business side of golf gives her a mental edge on the course. Sheehan began playing golf at 12, when her father suggested lessons with a local female PGA Professional.  Shortly thereafter, she chose golf as an elective class in grade school.  When she defeated all of the boys after her first class, she realized she would play golf the rest of her life.  She excelled at high school golf in Wisconsin, earning the Wisconsin Junior Player of the Year at 17.  She was awarded a golf and academic scholarship to Florida Southern College, garnering 2nd Team All-America honors during the 1998-99 season.  Sheehan competed in three NCAA Championships and took third place individually her junior year, breaking the record low score for the tournament on the final day.  She also qualified for the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Public Links her junior year of college, and competed in several Duramed FUTURES Tour events as an amateur.  Currently, she is a teaching professional at Reunion Resort and Club in Orlando.Click here for the Deal of the Week courtesy of Golflandwarehouse.com use promo code "GTR" for BIG discounts!
