In this episode we sat down with Jason Sautel, author of The Rescuer: a Firefighter’s Story of Courage, Darkness, and the Relentless Love That Saved Him. Tune in for the inside scoop on the book, to hear some seriously good advice on how to manage being married to a first responder, and learn more about Jason's story.A little about the book from his website: "He helped save people every day—but he had no idea how to save himself.Jason Sautel had it all. Confident in his abilities and trusted by his fellow firefighters, he was making a name for himself on the streets of Oakland, California. His adrenaline-fueled job even helped him forget the pain of his childhood—until the day he looked into the eyes of a jumper on the Bay Bridge and came face to face with a darkness he knew would take him down as well."Jason spent much of his early adulthood as a decorated firefighter in one of the toughest firehouses in the country and today shares stories and lessons from his time there to his 600,000+ Facebook followers. He loves his wife of sixteen years, Kristie, his four two-legged children, his two four-legged children, and appreciates the blessings of donuts, surfing, and Maui.If you enjoyed the episode and want to learn more or purchase Jason's book, please visit the following:Jason's website: http://www.rescuerbook.comJason's instagram: @author_jasonsautelJason's facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GracefullyRescued/
visit: www.issimi.comJason and Derek start this episode by discussing their upcoming video projects, on the Renault R5 Turbo 2 and the 1973 Porsche Carrera RS respectively. Derek is gobsmacked by the driving experience of the RS and Jason reluctantly admits that the 911 is one of the best driver’s cars of all time, despite his outspoken distaste for their pervasiveness. He also sings the praises of the upcoming Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder again, this time in the context of the sobering realization that the end of the internal combustion engine is on the horizon.California and the United Kingdom have both announced legislation to make the sale of internal combustion powered cars illegal starting in 2035, and Germany announced something similar for 2030 four years ago. The two discuss the benefits of and obvious drawbacks for enthusiasts of these upcoming laws, while Jason, who has been reading car magazines from the early 1980s, draws a parallel with the era when emissions and fuel economy standards changed the direction of cars forever 40 to 50 years ago, highlighting just how dire the “Malaise Era” was for enthusiasts. They also discuss how we managed to overcome that dark era, and how today’s darkness is offset by the exciting potential for electric cars, which are incredibly high performance and easier to maintain than today’s gasoline cars. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Proving you don’t have to be old to be grumpy, they spend each episode talking about what’s wrong with various parts of the automotive universe. Despite their best efforts to keep it negative, they usually wind up laughing, happy, and extolling their love for cars. Which just makes them angrier and more bitter.ISSIMI is an enthusiast-owned, full-service specialist offering sales, consignment, collection management, service, and consulting to discerning enthusiasts and collectors. Specializing in complex transactions that include international services for exceptional cars, ISSIMI’s San Francisco Bay Area and Europe-based teams of experts pride themselves on transparency and knowledge.Jason Cammisa is an automotive journalist, social-media figure, and TV host with over 250 million views on YouTube alone. Jason’s deeply technical understanding, made possible by a lifelong obsession with cars, allows him to fully digest what’s going on within an automobile — and then put it into simple terms for others to understand. Also, a Master’s Degree in Law trained him to be impossible to argue with.Derek Tam-Scott still tries. He’s a young automotive expert with old-man taste in cars, and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering — which means he knows how to be civil to Jason. Or at least he tries. With a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced the world’s most iconic cars. And hated most of them. On this episode of the Jason Cavness Experience I talk to Yegor Nadvornyy Founder/CEO BrainRich Inc cavnessHR website: https://www.cavnessHR.comJason's email: jasoncavness@cavnessHR.com @cavnessHR across social media @jasoncavnessHR across social media We talk about the following His company Brainrich Inc Coming to the U.S. from Ukraine. Never applying for a job. His time at Microsoft. Always having ideas. Yegor's Bio Yegor is originally from Ukraine. He came to the US fourteen years ago. He literally had $30 in his pocket, no friends, no job, no place to stay and he virtually spoke no English. Just when he learned some basic English he moved to Miami to study Finance. He later became a first Ukrainian president of a Latino business student organization with 400 members. After successfully employing all 400 members he also landed a job at Microsoft and moved to Seattle, WA. Microsoft was his job number 27 and just like with all the previous jobs he never actually applied for it. After spending 4 years in virtually every role in Finance at Microsoft Yegor decided to live a life of no regrets and started his own company Brainrich Inc with a current focus on the physical and mental development of the kids. Over the years Yegor worked and consulted in hospitality, retail, manufacturing, e-commerce, and even construction. It is his passion to help businesses to discover and execute on their missed opportunities Yegor's Social Media Yegor's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/yegornadvornyy/ Yegor's email: yegor.nadvornyy@gmail.com Company email: info@brainrichkids.com Company Website: https://brainrichkids.com/ Company Instagram: @brainrichkids Yegor's Advice I should talk about the learning curve a little bit. I'll give you one interesting example of how I managed a learning curve recently. I wanted to do marketing and I had a lot of theoretical knowledge. But I didn't know how to do it. So I went and I got a job at local college. People don't consider that there are jobs outside of what they do on653 a day to day basis. Like if you work at a bank, you don't think that you can get a job by teaching by becoming a professor. That's just one example of how you can overcome a learning curve. Or how you can divert to slightly different industry and polish your skills. I was overqualified to teach. I was overqualified in marketing. But I had nothing on paper. So I got a job again, without the resume. They didn't even know that I had marketing knowledge and nothing on my resume had anything about marketing. So I spent more time on this, but I was learning how to teach. When you teach you learn the best, right? Same thing I went to teach, that forced me to simplify my ideas, my understanding of marketing. I could deliver to 20 year olds to do that. I used to teach one class per semester. “Being able to work out is a bonus and a side effect of being healthy. If you are healthy now you get to become fit. But you should not attempt to become fit if you are unhealthy because you will ultimately do more damage to your body than you will if you just did nothing, quite frankly, besides maybe walking.”This week Rachel is joined by Jason Benade. I had the pleasure of meeting Jeremy about a month after my podcast released at a conference and we immediately became friendly. I was there when he took his big pubic speaking leap and saw his awesomeness shine through.A few weeks ago, he and his wife were guests on my "How I Show Up Retreat" that I co-hosted with my good friend Pablo, host of the "Chief Executive Connector" podcast. Not only is he kind and compassionate, but his has a great perspective on helping others find their why.Jeremy struggled to share in groups, on stage and online. Prior to launching his podcast, he had a personal Facebook that he very rarely used and a personal LinkedIn; that’s it! He [essentially] never shared online, in groups, and definitely never on stage. After attending some local mastermind groups, Jeremy realized how much value he really had; he helped entrepreneurs take leaps in mindsets and overcome major roadblocks. He realized that he’s not alone, there’s a lot of hidden knowledge out there that the world doesn’t have access to. He started Why Influence to inspire others to share their hidden knowledge and wisdom. He can be found @ https://whyinfluence.comJason is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, Alternative Medicine Practitioner, Certified Coach and Speaker. Eric Christiansen is an acclaimed documentarian who has built his brand around socially responsible filmmaking that educates, inspires and heals. He has the capability to identify an issue within a specific population and have it resonate with a general audience through compelling storytelling. A trauma survivor himself, having lost his home in the Santa Barbara Painted Cave fire disaster, he understands trauma, the resilience of the human spirit, and how important HOPE is to the healing journey. His previous films (Faces in the Fire, Homecoming: A Vietnam Vets Journey, Searching for Home: Coming Back from War) have been transformative in the recovery process for thousands of people whose lives have been compromised mentally, spiritually and physically by trauma.Leveraged as educational tools by top mental health institutions, Christiansen’s films migrate from the entertainment arena into environments that help additional audiences navigate the profound collateral damage trauma creates not only on the individual but the family and community as well. The New York Times called his last film, “strikingly photographed” and “…sure to give comfort and support to countless veterans and their families.” By spotlighting these survivors and their journeys, Christiansen has been able to help unify a variety of audiences around the power of HOPE, and educate the general population about the complexities of trauma. Ethics in marketing? Yes. Marketing needs ethics, too. After all, many people say “marketing” like it's a four-letter word. Senior Staff Instructor at LinkedIn Learning, Morten Rand-Hendriksen joins us this week on WPblab to talk about ethics in marketing. With a passion for learning new things (including ballroom dancing with his wife), philosophy, and accessibility, Morten is well-known as an advocate for all things forward-facing in tech but realizes the ethics implications. Join us this week for the live chat to ask Morten your questions.Twitter: @mor10Site: http://mor10.com/LinkedIn Learning & Lynda.comStudied Philosophy at UniversityEthics 101 (definition) … there are two terms you hear all the time – ethics & morals – two different aspects of the same thing (two sides of the same coin)Morals – internalized understanding of what is right and wrongEthics – a human definition of systems that you use to define what is right and wrongIf you look at Ethical Theory, you are looking at Moral Traditions – confusingly! There is often a disconnect in understanding the terminology between the two“Cryptomining is a good example of why the web design industry needs ethics”Ethics (as defined by Moren) – the rules that we create to allow us to judge individual actions and see if they are justifiable in a moral context“Why don’t people in the WordPress community copy each others themes and release them in a different name” – there’s nothing that explicitly prevents it, but there are ethics that keep them from doing soKant’s Categorical Imperative (wikipedia) – act as if you want your act to be a universal law – this is how people should always behaveWe need ethics in marketing – as you release this thing into the world, how do you want it to be handledThere’s a common misunderstanding that ethics provides you a list of dos and don’ts – it doesn’t – that is dogmatic moralism. Rather, ethics give you the tools to at least attempt to think through the decisions you make, before you turn those decisions to action (and see what the consequences might be)Example: There is code that you can currently install on your site that runs crypto mining processes on the computers of everyone who visits your site – generates money and sends it back to the owner of the siteSalon is using adblocking readers' CPU power to mine cryptocurrencySalon to ad blockers:Can we use your browser to mine cryptocurrency?Salon has every right to hijack your laptop to mine cryptocurrency while you read it – businessinsider.comThe JavaScript Supply Chain Paradox:SRI, CSP and Trust in Third Party LibrariesDonate Your TabConsequentialism – what are the consequences of your actions and do those consequences improve the common good? It is okay if some people are disadvantaged as long as the large majority are advantaged. In the case of the Crypto code – everyone is disadvantaged but the website owner, so Consequentialism would say – don’t do this!Duty ethics – you have to perform acts in a way that you would want every other person to behave in that same situation, not because you have to, but because you actually believe that’s how it should be doneYou have a duty of care to everyone who interacts with your website – unless you explicitly state that you are doing this, you are failing your visitorsVirtue Ethics – what kind of person do you become by performing the act. This is the oldest of these theories. The idea is that a human can only become virtuous by aspiring to a set of virtues. Is this the type of person that I want to be? That I would want everyone else to be?Capability Approach – the morality of an act has to be judged on what capabilities it grants the person it is acted upon. Does it improve their capabilities?Start thinking about how what we are doing effects the ends user. What kind of future am I building for the people who are using this site?A tiny toolkit to help you answer your own questions! What kind of world am I building for the end user?Who do I become by doing this?Do I want every other person to do this in the same circumstance?Am I increasing the overall utility for everyone? (everyone might be end user)What is the value of getting an influencer to say something about your product? You think they have more authority (there is value / money in that)It’s because people innately believe what they say – even if not true – and respond to that influenceIf you “ghost write” a review and make it seem as if it’s written entirely from the influencer, then the whole trust equation falls apart – your duty of care (ethically) would require you to disclose that information to your audienceThe “Milli Vanilli” effect100% GPL – if you aren’t 100% compliant, you can’t sponsor a WordCamp – how do ethics apply hereSomeone has to make a decision about who is affected and who is not, it can become a very subjective decision. In WordPress, that person is often Matt Mullenweg – we are granting him license to do this by following alongThe WordPress community largely rises and falls based on whether people are willing to buy into the importance and need of GPLEthics is complicated – every single person who is in the conversation will have a different viewpoint – if it’s a good ethical conversation, you touch on all the pain points enough that people are satisfied and everything has been accounted forIf we start over – what capabilities should we grant the end user and how do those capabilities help them improve their lives. One of the big values is that WordPress is free and (relatively) safe to use … you can formulate some overall idea. We are granting the capability to publish to the internet anyone who has access to any internet connectionThere is a constant battle between wanting to be the type of person who creates things for the WordPress community to freely use (open source) and also needing to be able to provide an income for yourself and your family – what is our ethical responsibility to ourselves and the end user?Bridget: If you’re going to build a product and you decide to start with those 4 ‘toolkit’ questions as part of your branding standards, then you would already be about 70% of the way thereWe are building a world for our end users – what kind of world do we want to build for them? What are the consequences of our choices? Ethics should not be a wet blanket on our creativity, it should be a hearth that keeps all that creativity from ‘burning down the house’What did we do wrong here? How did we end up in the place? What can we do to keep it from happening again?Tools of the Week—Bridget: HemmingwayApp.comJason: still using SetApp – but wishes it had Magnet (allows you to move items around on the screen to the edges and makes the windows snap)Morten: Pocket – save articles to read later – strips out all the ads and just gives you the text – it can also read it back to you! Even works with the Kobo e-Reader!!Suggested reading for everyone: Virtual Reality As Possibility SpaceLet us know who helped us out with the show notes (we’ll link to you)Cheryl LaPrade @yaycherylSherie LaPrade @heysherieJames Tryon @jamestryon (but not enough for a true bi-line)The post WPblab EP94 – Exploring the Ethics of Marketing with Morten Rand-Hendriksen appeared first on WPwatercooler.
