Welcome to the third episode of the 2023 season of the Becoming Podcast! On this month's show, I had the great pleasure of having a conversation with Day Schildkret. I was first introduced to Day's work many years ago when a friend recommended I check out his book, Morning Altars. Now, Day has written Hello Goodbye, a "recipe book" of rituals, that shares wisdom about how we can more meaningfully honour the hellos, goodbyes and other transitions in our lives. Here's some of what Day and I talked about in this episode: > Two massive catalyzing moments that Day experienced in one year, and the choice we have to make meaning of the threshold moments in our lives – or not. > The key components that need to be a part of every ritual in order for it to be successful. > The intangible, magical qualities of ritual and how we in our culture are inclined to "assassinate mystery with answers," rather than allowing the mystery of ritual to unfold. > The importance of having our rituals witnessed, and how to choose good witnesses. And those are just the highlights! I hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it!

We're always going through some kind of loss, celebration, or change in our lives. Joining me to discuss the importance of ritual during times of great transition is Day Schildkret. Day is internationally known for the creation of Morning Altars, beautiful pieces of impermanent art. He is also the author of Hello, Goodbye: 75 Rituals for Times of Loss, Celebration, and Change. A conversation about divorce is a conversation about endings. In order to begin again, it is important to mark this transition. Putting things in order through ritual can be healing. It helps you to feel resourced, reoriented, supported and witnessed. Learning how to let go and honor what once was, through ritual, is such an important topic. I hope you truly enjoy this conversation. “Endings are valuable. The better you can end something, the better you can begin something new.” Show Highlights Why Day says, “You have to change with change.” And what it means to participate in ending something, such as a relationship or marriage. (7:52) Endings need more from us than just going through the threshold. (10:02) Ritual: what it is and how it helps. (11:26) Why you need witnesses for endings as much as you do for beginnings. Witnesses affirm you are not alone and also acknowledge that change is happening. (12:17) Life transitions: we need to mark the places where we are turning, if we don't we still think we are on the same path. (15:54) Day talks about Morning Altars and how divorce and grief inspired him to start this practice of creating impermanent art from nature. (23:51) Rituals always have a beginning, middle, and end. They are contained and allow the space for grief, uncertainty, and emotion. They encourage wholeness. (29:20) Day talks us through one of the divorce rituals from his book Hello, Goodbye: 75 Rituals for Times of Loss, Celebration, and Change. (31:31) There is a right and wrong time to do a ritual. If you are in the heat of a divorce or transition, it may not be the right time. (35:07) The importance of moving from grievance into grief. (38:47) Learn more about Day Schildkret: DAY SCHILDKRET is internationally known for Morning Altars and has inspired tens of thousands of people across the globe to heal and connect with nature, art and ritual. Vivien Sansour is the founder of the Palestine Heirloom Seed Library. Trained in the field of Anthropology, Vivien has worked with farmers worldwide on issues relating to agriculture and independence. She is a 2020-2021 Religion, Conflict, and Peace Initiative Fellow at Harvard University where she is working on an autobiographical book documenting her work saving seeds in Palestine and around the world. Together we discussed how food sovereignty aligns with the struggle of Palestinian resistance , how biodiversity reflects and intersects with cultural diversity, how the military occupation of Palestine affects the farming practices that go on there, and how love is the greatest form of resistance to colonial oppression. She's brilliant. This episode captures Jack Kornfield's lecture/ Dharma talk at Esalen on September 15th, 1983. Kornfield, one of the most articulate and compassionate voices in modern Western Buddhism, is co-founder of the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts, and Spirit Rock Center in Woodacre, California. He trained as a Buddhist monk in Thailand, Burma and India, first as a student of the Thai forest master Ajahn Chah, about whom he speaks at length in this lecture. Kornfield has taught meditation worldwide since 1974 and is considered one of the key teachers to introduce Buddhist mindfulness practices to the West. He's the author of a host of books, including 1977's "Living Dharma," 1993's "A Path with Heart," and 2001's "After the Ecstasy, the Laundry." This talk is at turns funny, wise, and insightful. It awakens a certain kind of spirit in the listener. We're grateful to Kornfield for his continuing association with the Esalen Institute, and continuing devotion to the path of the heart. Too much on screen time? Zoom overwhelm? Get grounded go visit the forest to feel refreshed. Watch out for those Electro-Magnetic Frequencies, experience Forest Bathing as your Pause Moment For You. Do you have Zoom overwhelm? I do! Earthed forest bathing is a way I've found to clear my head and refresh my eyes. It helps me to feel grounded as that's exactly what it is by standing on the earth! The Japanese have known for years that spending mindful time in the woods is beneficial for body and soul. Most of us are spending way too much time looking at screens. This can result in having achy necks and shoulders, tired eyes and Zoomed out . We're in our heads not on the ground. Within this episode I include earthed forest bathing. I list 10 things that might make you feel un-grounded and un-earthed. I introduce the idea of Building Biology Ecology. This is the practise of designing healthier buildings, with consideration of the inside and outside. It's becoming more acknowledged about the negative impact that Electro magnetic field emissions has on our body and mind. To reduce the effects of electro magnetic fields I suggest 8 solutions, for you to feel more refreshed in the day and sleep better. I reveal my personal activity for grounding because when I feel earthed that helps me to feel calmer, especially as a highly sensitive person. The Pause Moment For You mindfulness mediation at the end of the episode is about Forest Bathing. We'll go to sit under a tree. Then we'll give the tree a hug. When leaving the forest feeling physically and mentally grounded. Amazed at the wonder of it all. Spring summer, where the energy of Spring invites the abundance of Summer. It's nature's wisdom and a feast offered to us of Dandelions. In this podcast episode I talk a lot about the health benefits of the humble yellow dandelion. What to eat the dandelion with and I include a recipe for making Dandelion Beer. I muse about the Celtic fire festival that happens in May. In the Celtic tradition the season where we transition from Spring into Summer is called Beltane. The energy now is expansion and the natural environment is bursting with anticipation everywhere. "We too can begin a new life, one that brings satisfaction and enrichment, whether this is by singing, dancing, running through the waves, walking barefoot on the grass or making love under the stars. Beltane is a wonderful time for expressing who you truly are.” This quote is from 'Mrs Darley's Pagan Whispers: A Celebration of Pagan Festivals, Sacred Days, Spirituality and Traditions of the Year' by Carole Carlton. Spring summer nature's wisdom As you start to connect more with nature's wisdom you'll find yourself become more aware of the changes of season. Spring time feels springy and early Summer continues that essence of bursting up and out. I love the inspiration I gain from Morning Altars written by Day Schildkret . I describe what it's like to go out on location seeking nature's wisdom. This is where I mooch and forage for items from nature's wisdom to create a mandala. The sunshine is a feature of both Spring Summer. I explain how to enjoy a bit of sun hugging! I've had a few of these over the years. This is a popular book that delves into nature's wisdom the 'Country Wisdom & Folklore Diary'. This is available from www.talkingtreesbooks.co.uk The book 'Sacred and herbal healing beers, the secrets of ancient fermentation' is full of amazing historic information on the subject and nature's wisdom. This is a brief guided meditation for Living the Questions, based on the book Morning Altars by Day Schildkret.
Another queer brother from abroad, Day is internationally known for his work using Morning Altars to inspire thousands around the world to renew their relationship to nature, creativity and impermanence through ritual and the practice of Earth art. Diving into some of the threads of our cultural imagination keeping us at odds with our own wholeness, Day and I explore themes of impermanence, queering masculinity and non-binary ways of being in lived relationality with uncertainty and mystery. In a time exposing rigid patterns of being-together, we dance with the wisdom of queerness in illuminating what it might mean to navigate change and liminality with openness and curiousity. Join us for a playful exploration of how Earth Art, practices of impermanence and “queering" might support us in our restoration of wholeness. --Show-notes and links hereConnect with me on InstagramConnect with me on FacebookMusic by RhoneSupport the show (https://aljeffery.com/podcast/)
We live in wild times. So much has changed since I published my previous episode of this podcast. A global pandemic is now sweeping the world, with country after country imposing severe lock downs and many people retreating into isolation. In Canada, we are just beginning to feel the impact, and the future is deeply uncertain. Which is why I am deeply honoured to share my conversation today with my friend and beauty maker Day Shildkret. Day calls himself an impermanent earth artist, who has developed quite a following with his practice of Morning Altars - gorgeous mandalas that he builds through foraging for natural materials in each place that he goes. In fact, I highly recommend pausing this podcast and visiting his Instagram to see this beauty for yourself. In this episode, we begin with the obvious - speaking about the coronavirus that has now overtaken the public imagination. We explore his own roots as a young Jewish boy that was almost killed in a bombing in Israel, before coming out as gay in New York City and claiming his sexuality for the first time. And finally, we make a plea for the willingness to craft beauty in a time of fear, as a way to court life back into the center of the spiral.

Day has been captivated by nature and art ever since first viewed the work of artist, Andy Goldsworthy as a child. Day’s very first altars were on the side of his driveway after every rainstorm, where his five year old self was devoted to saving the displaced worms by digging little holes and then decorating them in a mandala-like fashion. But it wasn’t until a major relationship breakup that he began to cultivate Morning Altars as a daily spiritual and beauty-making practice as a way to process his grief and heartache. For much of his adult life, Schildkret has been traveling three distinct but converging paths of art, nature and education. On the artistic road, he worked on and off Broadway from 2001-2007 with luminaries such a Steve Martin (The Underpants), Jessie Tyler Ferguson (The Complete Works of Shakespeare Abridged), Duncan Sheik (The Nightingale), and Kristen Bell and Nikki M. James (The Adventures of Tom Sawyer). As an educator and public speaker, Schildkret began his career teaching teenagers and mentoring them to connect their spiritually with a deeper nature connection. He was the winner of the prestigious Helen Diller Award for Excellence in Education with his widely popular ‘Fire Circle’ class. For over 10 years, Schildkret gathered hundreds of students around a fire to learn about ancestry, spirituality, responsibility and impermanence. Schildkret is also the Founder of Legacy As Livelihood, a creative purpose coaching practice, and The Break Free Lab, a nationally touring workshop designed for creative and spiritually minded people who long to find their creative purpose and live a life devoted to serving their creative calling. Schildkret understands that to be a teacher, he also needs to be a student. Over the course of his career, he has learned from nature connection expert, Jon Young (8 Shields Institute), studied and danced with Shoshonee elder Clyde Hall (the Naraya) and is currently a devoted scholar with the author, spiritual activist and public speaker Stephen Jenkinson (Die Wise - Nautilus Book Award Winner) and a recent graduate of his school (the Orphan Wisdom School) in Canada. While Schildkret has been building earth altars his entire life, he has been building an altar every morning as a practice for the past six years inside Wildcat Canyon in Richmond, CA. Inspired to share the benefits of this daily practice, he has gathered communities all over the United States and Canada to attend his altar and mandala making workshops. His work proves there is real healing and connection happening when people create intentional earth art. morningaltars.com
This week on Cultivating Place, we revisit our Gratitude Special of last year - celebrating this season of harvest, of taking stock, of giving back, of deep GRATITUDE and of preparing for the restorative dark of winter ahead. Our central conversation is with earth artist Day Schildkret, who makes meaning and beauty with his daily practice, and now global outreach and book known as Morning Altars. Woven throughout the episode are gardeners from around the world sharing with us what gratitude in the garden looks like to them. It’s incredibly painful again to write this week - one week since the #CAMPFIRE of California broke out and swept across (so far) 148,000 acres of this beautiful landscape of the California Floristic Region, close to 10,000 human homes destroyed, hundreds of businesses, at least three nurseries destroyed or damaged, the members of several dedicated garden clubs and master gardener groups profoundly impacted. And that's just what we know as of today. I know that the fires continue south of here, ravaging those landscapes. I recognize that there's loss, devastation, and tragedy of all scales around our globe daily - today my heart is heavy here, in my home - home of the Maidu, Wintu, Concow and other indigenous peoples, home of so many endemic and native plant and animals friends and lives held dear, home to me and my family for 11 years now. Several weeks ago now Sarah and I determined to revisit our Gratitude Special from 2017 this week, in part to prepare ourselves for this traditional season of harvest and thanksgiving and in part to celebrate the publication of Day Schildkret's new book Morning Altars. Which is well worth celebrating. It did not of course occur to us that this episode would air in this time of chaos and loss. And yet it did. While for some the storylines might feel too soon, too raw, to hard to hear - I hope for others it hold seeds of hope and possibility for the next season of growth. While the landscape and nature all around us in the midst of natural disaster might not seem like a source of solace, might instead seem like causes for fear, the words of Leah Penniman of several weeks ago come back to me: "While the land might be the scene of the crime, the land itself is NOT the crime." While she was of course speaking to Black and Brown farmers and cultivators, reminding them of their rightful, beautiful, and dignified reciprocal and ancient relationship to the land - I would offer her thought out as a seed of hope for all gardeners in my region for whom gardening, relationship, and pleasure from their scarred landscape might seem distant right now. While so much is being done in the here and now for immediate needs of people affected by this disaster - my thoughts are toward the many dedicated and passionate gardeners in our area and all that they’ve lost. Losses like these will come into clearer focus as time goes on and be very painful, and yet might also seem insignificant to these gardeners in the face of everything. I want you gardeners to know that you are seen and supported, and that the gardening community wants to help your and your important gardening passions as they rebuild. Stay tuned for support efforts in the works and coming soon. I am grateful to be here with you in community, Love, Jennifer

The late autumn into winter months – from the Harvest Moon rising in October to the Winter Solstice on December 21st and through the beginning of the new calendar year, mark traditional seasons of gratitude, of giving thanks, and of offerings of generous service. For me, my garden itself and my gardening practice are my very best, most consistent acts of both gratitude and service to the world – and I know many other gardeners and cultivators who feel the same. The garden – very much like the grace that writer and thinker Anne Lamott references — rises to meet many gardeners where we are and — sometimes — it does not leave us where we started, but nurtures us along further than we believed was possible. This week on Cultivating Place I am so excited to offer you our first ever seasonal special celebrating this SEASON of harvest, of taking stock, of giving back, of deep GRATITUDE and of preparing for the restorative dark of winter ahead. In this one hour of gratitude and gardening practice and celebration, gardeners from around the world share with us what gratitude in the garden looks like to them. And, our central conversation will be with earth artist Day Schildkret, who makes meaning and beauty with his daily practice of Morning Altars.
