We're all drawn to people we find interesting. Whether it's in business, life or a variety of other relationships, no one wants to be the boring one in the room. Today we're breaking down the 11 ways to become more interesting. And it *doesn't* involve travelling to 69 different countries or working a bunch of super obscure jobs.   Questions?  Comments? Gossiping: Evolution, Connection & the Harm it Can Create

“Gossiping is motivated by a desire to be closer to the person you’re talking to. When you notice you’re talking together about someone who isn’t there, pause and check in with yourself. What might you be avoiding talking about?” -Dr. Alexandra H. Soloman   We've all gossiped, let's be honest. In fact, for the average person, gossip makes up 80% of our conversations as human beings. And while most of us think of gossip as negative, there are actually evolutionary roots to gossip that have had positive benefits to us as human beings. But overall, there's a lot of gossip that can be harmful, both to the person being discussed and the one doing the gossiping. Because that’s the thing about gossiping: when I hear someone talking about somebody else in a really shitty way, my first thought is: what are they saying about me when my back is turned then? In this episode we'll get into: How gossip can be used as a form of bonding, and why that can be incredibly negative What gossiping can tell you about a person Turning around a connection with someone who only wants to gossip Why intention matters when it comes to gossip and how to spot the differences Asking yourself how you want to show up in the world and the kind of human you want to become   REFERENCES Episode #17 Rest for Success and How to Manage Metabolism with Dr. Jade Teta Episode #205 Purpose, Using Pain for Growth & Building Multi-Passionate Online Businesses with Dr. Jade Teta Episode #88, Save the Drama for Your Mama: Being Drama-Focused is Keeping You From Happiness with Christina Montalvo Time Magazine: Why Do People Gossip?   Questions?  Comments? There are two things you need to be asking yourself to create your own version of success: 1. Get clear on your WHY. Why do you do what you do? Dig deep - this can’t just be about the money. There has to be more to it than that. 2. What do you want? What feels good to you? And most importantly, when you make a decision (or someone offers you a suggestion) and you try it on for size, how does it feel for you?   REFERENCES Episode #221, Your Job is Not Who You Are: Trust the Journey   Questions?  Comments? We've all had those moments where it felts as though the creative energy simply wouldn't flow. You know, like when you realize you've been staring at the same page of your book for 15 minutes without reading a word. Or looking blankly at a computer screen without actually accomplishing anything, spinning your wheels and getting caught in "busy" work because the words simply won't come for that post you're trying to push out.  Everything feels forced, ideas won't populate, and you're worried your creativity has left the building for good. I've got good news: it will come back. But you're going to have to take care of you first. In this episode I'm giving you all the tools you need to trust the process, get that creativity and inspiration back, and remind yourself who the f*ck you are.   REFERENCES Episode #230, Slow Down to Speed Up: Burnout & the Inherent Vulnerability of Entrepreneurship Episode #117, The 9 Year Affair: Lessons in Infidelity Episode #90, How to Sleep Like a Boss with Christine Hansen   Questions?  Comments? So I took a little hiatus...and I'm explaining why and being transparent about some of the things I've been experiencing behind the scenes because I believe it's important to normalize this. Especially in 2020, because nearly everyone I've spoken with in the past couple of months has either been nearing burnout or already in the middle of it. It's never been so important to care for yourself and your mental health, and to be kind to yourself. And sometimes that's going to mean needing to take a step back. Slow down, in order to speed up later. And also simply slowing down for the sake of slowing down, because that's ok too, without some end goal of pushing harder later on. We're also discussing: How vulnerability is inherent to entrepreneurship as you open yourself up for judgement every single day The power of momentum and using it to your advantage...while still caring for yourself first and foremost Trusting and surrender to the process Understanding that when your creativity and energy are drained, it's not a permanent condition. But it *is* a sign you need to slow the F down. Giving yourself permission to rest. The fact that you don't owe the Internet or anyone else an explanation when you need to take a step back to care for yourself.   REFERENCES Room to Grow Podcast episode #123, Vulnerability as a Commodity: Where's the Line? September is Mental Health Awareness month, and today is World Suicide Prevention Day. As the biggest overall focus of the Room to Grow Podcast is mental health, I always try to put extra attention on these issues around this time, and today I brought on a dear friend of mine to talk about men's mental health in the workplace. Scott Baker, Managing director of Baker Group AU. Baker Group AU provides repairs and maintenance for air quality systems and catering equipment throughout Australia. Lover of business, travel, fiancee Aylin and advocating for mental health. Disliker of influencers and cider. Scott is basically one of my male biz besties. We have completely different businesses and WILDLY different business models, but the over-arching principles of business are the same and we share a lot of the main philosophies.  So much respect for this guy and what he’s managed to build, especially at such a young age. Most importantly, I have a deep appreciation for the support that he provides to his all-male employees, particularly when it comes to mental health and creating strong bonds within his team This is especially relevant given that Scott’s industry in the trades is typically very “bro” culture. I have a long history of significant men in my life who were/are in the trades, and through them, I’m extremely familiar with the kinds of environments created on job sites and within those companies. Those types of workplaces are usually not exactly where one would feel comfortable discussing their feelings in virtually any capacity, which makes it even more important that Scott has managed to cultivate something very different and open with his all-male team by making mental health an important part of the conversation. Scott and I are covering a variety of topics related to mental health, entrepreneurship and caring for employees in the workplace on this episode, including: Supporting your employees, especially in a male-dominated industry not known for being friendly towards mental health Men’s mental health What keeps Scott grounded in entrepreneurship Why the 40 hour work week is a sham, and efficiency is key Thinking outside the box Suicide rates and supporting employees mental health in crisis Donating to causes important to employees   REFERENCES Baker Group AU Scott Baker on LinkedIn One Eighty Australia CAMH: The Centre for Addiction & Mental Health (Canada) Room to Grow Podcast episode #130: Cancer, Depression & Strength: A Powerful Story of Hope & Resilience with Tom McClelland   Questions?  Comments? "It took me my entire life to get here." Today we're digging into: Not having the kind of impact you want if you aren't charging appropriately You as a human being are invaluable. No price tag can be attached to that. I’ve gone through phases these last few months of struggling mentally with the idea that my life is on hold.  On really bad days, I’ve felt overwhelming grief and even a tinge of bitterness.  If life has taught me anything, it’s to always expect the unexpected, and not get too attached to “the plan” because life simply doesn’t go according to plan. And that doesn’t need to be a bad thing, it can often end up being a really beautiful thing. In today's episode we're talking all about; Life in 2020 during a global pandemic, lockdown, and the collective grief that we are feeling because this year hasn't "gone as planned" A reminder that life is happening RIGHT NOW with or without us.  We have to see the silver lining and continue living our lives, just differently. "Burning my entire life to the ground in general felt absolutely necessary to my survival, as necessary as breathing." Today's episode is going to be one that is very close to my heart, I've had this episode on my radar and in my heart to record for at least 6 months now. Exactly 1 year ago today I burnt my whole life here in Canada to the ground, jumped on a plane and flew to Bali.  Since that day, this city I used to call home in Canada, hasn't truly felt like home and I get really vulnerable in today's episode about how that looks, and feels, ESPECIALLY right now during this whole pandemic where I am grounded back here in Canada for an undetermined length of time. I'm going to be talking about: Why such a drastic move that seemed crazy to some was so necessary for my survival. The opportunity it presented for me to build my life and future exactly that way I want to. The idea that the place you call home isn't a physical location, but a feeling inside of you that you should follow. This one is straight from my heart to yours.   Don't forget about the podcasting masterclass being held this Wednesday, July 15th @ 7:30pm ET! We need to make something very clear before we dive in: we are NOT anti-racism educators.   This is the second instalment in a series of episodes with myself and Christina around the topic of anti-racism, Black Lives Matter, and racial injustice. These episodes can be heavy, and we will potentially get some of this wrong but we need to have these hard conversations, and get it wrong while we continue to do the work we need to do as White Womxn. Today we talk about: White privilege; a continuation into this conversation, how it shows up for us, and what we are still learning about it. How the online coaching world is trying to link the idea of  "manifestation" to this movement, and why we're just a little more 'go fuck yourself' than we are 'love & light' when it comes to that idea. Breaking down microaggression; what it means, what it can look & sound like, and why white folk need to stop it. and so much more... Our only goal and hope, from doing these types of episodes is that we hopefully help you spark some conversations in your own life, as well as raise awareness to help you figure out some more things to Google learn about. We are not here to be the experts, but we ARE here to have the conversations and show up for the hardship. Are you ready? Get listening right away by clicking the link above! Let’s do this! “the only reason why I'm sharing this is because I want you to start thinking about what you're willing to lose over taking a stand. Because words of support are great, but what about when it comes time to make sure that your actions match your words?” The idea of implementing a vetting process into your business might not be something you have though about very much, but now more than ever, I personally feel it is extremely important to align yourself with the brands, clients, corporations, guests, etc. that are truly in line with your values, your morales, & where you stand on important world issues.  It may not feel like the greatest working relationship when you know that a company or an individual didn't take a public stand on something that you are extremely passionate about. So how do you actually "Vet"?  Well that's what we're talking about today! Plus, you'll also learn: How to really know yourself, and what it is you & your brand stand for. How to speak to your ideal client, and make it very clear how you align with their values Vetting from a variety of different angles; guests, corporations, brand associations and why it is OK to not work with companies that just don't make you feel good. It seems perplexing to me when I get the question "how do I show up genuinely online?", so today we're going to dive into the topic of just being yourself and showing up online genuinely.   I truly believe that there are a lot of people who are trying to show up in the way that they think that they should, rather than the way that they actually are. OK, so you've done what you think is a killer podcast interview, you've done all the work and now it's air day.  Your podcast guest doesn't share the episode, doesn't comment on your post, and doesn't even plug your podcast at all.  What went wrong? Was it something you said? Was it something you did? Was it something you DIDN'T say? What happened? We're going to dive into this today, talking all about: Why sometimes them not sharing has absolutely NOTHING to do with you Asking yourself a few questions about the guest experience you provided Did you treat your guest like an absolute rockstar from start to finish? Did you make the guest feel comfortable with the line of questions?  Did you make sure your guest was happy with the end result? Be understanding that they may just be so incredibly busy in their own business, and they don't have the capacity/capability to share. It can be hard not to take this situation personally, I speak from experience here.  Hopefully today's episode can help you look at this just a little bit differently. Are you ready? "We need to watch the language that we're using because not only can we be really, really hard on ourselves, but if we're throwing something out into the universe, and then we're using words like 'try' or 'maybe' or 'might', we are basically telling the universe that we're not actually too sure about that." Today is all about the words we use on a daily basis, and how they hold so much power.  The biggest word I talk about is the word "try". It is one word that I, myself, am making a conscious effort daily to try and remove from my vocabulary. If you are using the word 'try', you are subtly implying to yourself that there's a good chance that you're not going to do it. As much as you might have good intentions, you are probably not going to actually be able to accomplish whatever it is that you're setting out to do.  It's time to stop being so hard on yourself, or speaking about your dreams as if they are just that. So, we're going to chat a bit about: Being conscious of the words we use when in conversation, writing in our journals/blogs, etc, or speaking to ourselves. The actual importance of that old saying your mom used to use, "Be careful what you wish for!" Keeping promises to ourselves and doing the things we said we were going to do! How this all affects our self integrity, self trust, and just our overall daily experiences. Also, don't forget that the Speak your Truth Academy doors are now OPEN! This is going to be an amazing 12 week long journey with myself and 11 other women (Sorry guys!) where we dig deep into your story.  What your story is, how to tell it, how to share it, and how you can build your entire business around it. ‘Tell the story of the mountain you climbed. Your words could become a page in someone else's Survival Guide’ ~ Morgan Harper Nichols Sharing stories is part of the human experience.  We all have a story, we've all heard other people's stories, & we've all shared our own  stories about certain life situations with people at some point.  More of us need to be sharing our stories because it's how we connect to one another, and largely, it's how we learn. Hearing that somebody else has gone through something similar to us, how they have dealt with it, and the lessons that they've pulled from it is incredibly powerful. It gives us light at the end of the tunnel to try to start to imagine what it will be like when we get through our particular situation. Listen in today as we dive into our stories and: Why stories & sharing are so important What holds people back from sharing When to know if you’re ready to share How to share *BONUS* 5 min exercise on stories I want you to recognize and to acknowledge that you have a story to share, that you can change people's lives. Make your story the best fucking thing to happen to you and to someone else at the same time, that power resides within you. The longer you continue to hold it back, the longer you are continuing to hold yourself back and do a disservice to those who could benefit from it. Are you ready? I'm so honoured to have a very special friend of mine, Dr. Jade Teta on the Room To Grow Podcast for the second time!  Jade's first episode was #17 here on the podcast and after more than 200 episodes it remains my second-most downloaded episode ever, which is really no surprise if you know anything about how much incredible value Jade always brings. Dr. Jade is an integrative physician, author and sought after expert in the realm of metabolism and self-development. He spent the last 25 years immersed in the study of strength and conditioning, hormonal metabolism and the psychology of change and success. He is the founder and creator of the international health and fitness company, Metabolic Effect, and the author of several books. His newest company, Next Level Human, combines his medical and fitness knowledge with his expertise in self-development and mindset change.  He has recently released two new books available on Amazon:  Next Level Tribe and Human 365.  The best place to find all of his materials is via his website: www.jadeteta.com. There is so much Jade and I covered in today’s episode, from Self Development & Personal Growth, to physical and mental health & even some amazing business nuggets in between. Jade is a teacher at heart, and that shines through more than ever in this episode. This one is absolutely jam packed, covering everything from: How to build an online business from the ground up, scale it, and use your multi-passionate nature to work for you rather than against you Creating memorable frameworks that allow you to stand out from the crowded online space, and social media metrics to pay attention to The differences between purpose, passion and meaning Using pain for growth and allowing it to fuel you Whether or not you can teach warmth and authenticity When to share personal stories and getting very clear on your intentions before coming forward Why black and white thinking isn't serving you, and how to be more open to views and opinions outside of your own Jade's biggest fear, and what he wished people asked him about more often   I appreciate Jade and his expertise so much, and I know you’ll enjoy this episode and everything Jade has to offer today!   Want to connect with Dr. Jade Teta online? Kieran Hedley is an Anxiety Coach, Meditation Guide and Waterfall Adventurer from New Zealand. He considers himself blessed to have been through his own darkness and fear, his own anxiety and hopelessness... to have come out the other side in a progressive way through the exposure to the median between the science and the spiritual. Through loneliness and never feeling good enough, Kieran was unsure about the journey of acquiring Freedom Within. He wanted proof. He wanted logic. But, without being able to logically explain the way he was, he would seek reason. This only lead to many failed attempts with councillors, psychologists and medication. Finding the answers alone didn’t change the way he was. Today, that freedom is something Kieran lives. The ability to decide how he wants to be, rather than having a person, situation or experience decide. It’s something he now guides and coaches others to do for themselves. Today Kieran touches on: sitting with the really uncomfortable feelings that may be coming up for you in quarantine and dealing with them rather than ignoring them or continue stuffing them down redefining masculinity exploring the insecurities that come with the societal definition of masculinity  the sense of control that can come with accessing pornography rather than having the actual human interaction, and the impossible standards that porn can set. Along with the communication issues and lack of connection when dependent on porn for pleasure in place of the human interaction or relationship Kieran is one of the most pure, beautiful souls I think I've ever met and that shines through in today's interview with him.  You can find Kieran online at the links below, and please don't forget to check out the bonus episode that dropped today as well, where Kieran turns the tables and interviews me about The 9 Year Affair.  He asks some really deep and amazing questions, that have me digging deeper into my story than I ever have. This interview is PURE FIRE and I'm beyond grateful to our guest for sharing his incredible expertise with us. Today we're talking to Tyler J. McCall.  Tyler is a business and Instagram marketing strategist for online business owners and digital entrepreneurs. He focuses on using Instagram and social media to tell stories, build relationships, and convert followers to fans, drawing from his 10 years of experience in non-profit marketing and community organizing. Since 2015, Tyler has taught thousands of entrepreneurs how to start, grow, and scale their online businesses. He is the founder of the Follower to Fan Society - an online Instagram marketing training program - and of the Online Business Association - the first and only professional association for online business owners and digital entrepreneurs. Tyler is based in Asheville, North Carolina where he lives with his husband Eric. When he’s not coaching or teaching, Tyler enjoys Target runs and road trips that he documents on his Instagram Stories. Here are just a few of the incredible gold nuggets Tyler is dropping today... Pivoting VS Shifting. Breaking down the differences, and giving clarity on what your business may actually need to do during this time. Facing fear head on and pushing through the perceived judgement around continuing to sell to your market right now.  Why they need you, and why it's OK! Business Strategy:  Talking short term, intermediate term, and long term game plans. How the current global pandemic is affecting Tyler not only from a business standpoint, but also personally. This is one of those episodes you may need to listen at least twice to take in the absolute gold that Tyler dropped today. Please tune in, share with someone who needs to hear it, and DM either Tyler or myself with any questions you might have that come up from this discussion. It feels so important right now, more than ever, to start showing up as a leader, but what are some of the initial steps it takes to do that? In this bonus episode you will hear 7 ways to start showing up as a leader right now, whether you're an entrepreneur, or just trying to show up as a beacon of light for people that look to you as a leader in positivity. These steps truly begin and end with taking care of yourself first and foremost so you can show up powerfully and intentionally in your space.  Are you making yourself a priority? Are you tuning into what you need most right now? Lastly, don't get focused and hung up on the tiny details of trying to show up "perfectly".  It's ok to just simply stand up, share your story, thoughts and feelings from a place of being of service, and do it as the perfectly imperfect human being you are.  What's most important?  That you just START. Are you ready? Let's do this!! We talk about what it means to resist categorical thinking and the often false narratives we construct about our own lives. From Annette’s participation in a bar association panel as a non-lawyer, to Sarah’s grappling with loss of identity, there is a need to rewrite the story we want our lives to tell, which means embracing the uncertainty of the creative process. We discuss how contemplative silence allows us to shed other people's expectations and to dismantle linear narratives all too common in the hyper-rational legal world. Resources: Megan O'Grady's article "Is the Age of the Artistic Recluse Over?" from the NYTimes Magazine can be found here. Meghan O'Rourke's article "Lessons in Stillness From One of the Quietest Places on Earth" also from the NYTimes Magazine can be found here. More from Elizabeth Gilbert on passion vs. curiosity can be found here. On the topic of living creatively, Julia Cameron writes in The Artist's Way that "we are looking not to grand strokes of change - although they may come - but instead to the act of creatively husbanding all that is in the present: this job, this house, this relationship."
