Without the use of paper there would be no mokuhanga. Washi has played an indelible position in the world of the Japanese print. Many artists in mokuhanga use washi for their prints and as The Unfinished Print is a podcast dedicated to the workings of mokuhanga I felt it was necessary to interview an expert in all things washi. Nancy Jacobi has worked tirelessly in promoting the use of washi in her life through her company and store The Japanese Paper Place, here in Toronto. She has lectured on the subject, as well as educated many about the possibilities of washi. In this episode of The Unfinished Print Nancy helps me understand how important washi is to many artists, its history, and how it needs to be saved. follow The Unfinished Print and my work on Instagram @popular_wheatprints, Twitter @unfinishedprint, or email me at theunfinishedprint@gmail.com Show Notes: all links are hyperlinked. Just click! The Japanese Paper Place Echizen washi Iwami UNESCO paper Ogawa Hosokawa UNESCO kozo paper - this video I found on YouTube is a great mini doc of the intensive paper making process. Rembrandt (1606-1669) - washiarts.com have written on Rembrandt's use of Japanese paper. Inuit printmaking - The Inuit are an Arctic group of indigenous peoples located in Canada, Greenland, and the US state of Alaska. They have a tradition of printmaking beginning in the 1950's, as introduced by administrator John A. Houston (1921-2005),who according to The Canadian Encyclopedia, studied in Japan for a few months under print artist Un'ichi Hiratsuka (1895-1997) Today, there is a rich history of printmaking from the Inuit people. Mitsumata paper Timothy Barrett is a printmaker and paper maker from the US who was interviewed on the Paper Talk Podcast Dutch trade with Japan as found on a multi part website dedicated to the Netherlands/Japan exchange Japonisme - a great essay found in the MET website The Ontario College of Art is located in downtown Toronto near the Art Gallery of Ontario. With a long history of artists and art OCAD continues to teach art in Toronto. The Bookbinders Guild of Toronto chiyogami paper is a patterned paper for decoration and art CERB - the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit plan was a monetary response to the current COVID-19 pandemic Queen St. West is a street in the central part of Toronto, running West to East, with a rich history. In the 1980's when Nancy was first setting up The JPP it was a seedier part of Toronto with a lot of prostitution, drugs, and poverty. CAMH - The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health is an institution in Toronto for the care of individuals afflicted with various psychiatric issues. It is still located on Queen St. West and has always been a fixture in the area. With a rich varied history of research and awareness CAMH continues its efforts today. Toronto artist co-ops have been important to the preservation and cooperation between artists for a long time. Artscape, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and others have been working with artists in Toronto for years. The Paper Place Trinity Bellwoods Park is a 16 hectare park located in and around Queen Street and Dundas Streets in Toronto. It's an important park for many students, artists, hipsters, and bohemians. Once used by the University Of Toronto with the building of Trinity College in the mid 19th century, the college had been demolished in the 1950's much like many architecturally important buildings in Toronto at that time, and currently. Etobicoke (Ētowbicoe) is a part of the city of Toronto which stretches west towards the city of Mississauga. It was a suburb until Toronto amalgamation in January of 1998. Au Papier Japonais (Montréal) - I would encourage my American printmaker listeners to seek out Canadian paper shops like the JPP and APJ, as well as Washi Arts in the US, for their paper needs. With shipping being complicated with COVID-19 it may be a better option. The Ontario Arts Council is a grant based organization in the province of Ontario which grants subsidies for artists in visual and theatrical art. The Japan Foundation is an organization based in Japan but found with art spaces and offices all over the world which spreads the culture of Japan. Creative World Brian Kelley - printmaker Harbourfront is a portion of the lake shore in Toronto from Bathurst St. to Queens Quay. It has become a center for art, sports, theatre and outdoor activities. The arts have predominantly been exhibited at The Harbourfront Centre. In this special Out Da Box Talks show. Hosts "Cril" and "A-Level" speak in-depth with Legendary Brooklyn Emcee "Masta Ace" on a range of topics, including his beginnings in hip hop, collaborating with Producer Marco Polo, his interesting experience working with MF DOOM, his approach to concept albums, keeping his integrity and remaining relevant. His word of advice to the younger generation and even the older headz. Ace also talks about living with Multiple Sclerosis, how he was able to change his diet, his experience collaborating with Spike Lee on the Crooklyn Dodgers song for the "Crooklyn" film soundtrack and working with the legendary Juice Crew. He even took the time to share words of wisdom from his 17 year marriage. This was a very insightful convo and we had a wonderful time buildin' with such a respectful and humble veteran in hip hop. Masta Ace's presence in Hip Hop is certainly a jewel and one we highly value for his ongoing contributions. Much thanks to him for being open to speaking with us. Enjoy!
The Radio Boys (C.Truth, Kev Lawrence) sat down in studio with veteran legend emcee Master Ace (@mastaace) of eMC. Ace gave light to: why he didn't appear on the 2nd Crooklyn Dodgers record, the Spike Lee album that never happened, being a high school football coach for 11 years, how being an avid car enthusiast drove one of his biggest hits, the reason people thought he sold out to the west coast, how eMC was formed, performing for the first time with Bizmarkie, his return to Spittin in Da Wip, why being ahead of your time is not always great, putting together concept albums in the throw away era, dealing with moopies and more. Following the tour, O.C. signed with Wild Pitch Records in 1994 where Serch was vice president.[2] O.C. also met Lord Finesse and Buckwild on the first Source tour, marking his introduction to the D.I.T.C crew. After the tour he connected with Buckwild and started recording a demo that would become his debut album Word...Life.[2]By 1994, he finished the album Word...Life, which included everything from his demo, along with "Time's Up," the song that would go on to be his most notable single. "Time's up" was initially a record for Pharoahe Monch from Organized Konfusion.[2] Beyond a quick outro from Prince Po, Word...Life does not have any guest appearances. This was not by design, however, as Nas was supposed to be on the album but never showed up to the studio for the recording session.[2] The album was critically acclaimed and remains beloved in hip-hop circles. In 1996, Credle appeared on the Red Hot Organization's compilation CD, America is Dying Slowly, alongside Biz Markie, Wu-Tang Clan, and Fat Joe, among many other prominent hip hop artists. The CD, meant to raise awareness of the AIDS epidemic among African American men, was heralded as "a masterpiece" by The Source magazine. In 1997, O.C. signed to Pay Day Records,[1] where he released his second album Jewelz, featuring collaborations with DJ Premier, Da Beatminerz and Freddie Foxxx. The single "Far From Yours" peaked at #81 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it his highest charting single to date. By this time, he was a part of the underground hip hop act known as Diggin' in The Crates together with Lord Finesse, Fat Joe, Showbiz & A.G., Diamond D, Buckwild and Big L. In 2000 the crew released their self-titled debut album through Tommy Boy Records on which O.C. featured on the majority of the songs. In 1998, O.C. was featured on Pete Rock's "Respect Mine" from Pete Rock's 1998 solo debut album Soul Survivor. The 2001 release of Bon Appetit was met with very mixed reviews; the negative accused O.C. of selling out with a polished, shining and toned-down sound. This was although Buckwild produced the large bulk of the album with the only help coming from Lord Finesse and Ahmed (pretty much the same formula that made Word...Lifea success). After the disappointing release O.C. disappeared from the scene until 2005, when he released his fourth album with Grit Records; Starchild which only dropped as a very limited Japanese/European import and was met with great acclaim. Later that year, he signed with Hieroglyphics Imperium Recordings and teamed up with Bronx-native producer Mike Loe, and dropped Smoke and Mirrors.O.C. is also known for his feature on the Clockers soundtrack as part of the Crooklyn Dodgers, which also featured rappers Chubb Rock and Jeru the Damaja on the now classic DJ Premier produced "Return of the Crooklyn Dodgers". This is however the only time the group has ever collaborated.O.C. collaborated with fellow D.I.T.C. member A.G. for an album entitled Oasis. The bulk of the album was produced by French beatsmith E-Blaze with additional tracks supplied by Lord Finesse, Statik Selektah and Showbiz who also acts as the executive producer of the album. May 2012 saw the release of a new collaborative album with Detroit-based producer Apollo Brown entitled Trophies on the Mello Music Group label. The first single was "Prove Me Wrong". The vinyl version of that album has also been repressed several times over. With Ray West in 2014 O.C. has curated a more laid back and purposefully smooth affair. Besides flowing freely from track-to-track with the help of atmospheric interludes, Ray's Cafe is noticeably and gratifyingly short at nine tracks long as well. Ray's Cafe was released on Red Apples 45, a small label co-founded by A.G. and West. O.C. joined D.I.T.C. for their 2016 release Sessions which was preceded by the lead single "Rock Shyt" See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

A week removed from the riotous protests in Baltimore, Md., six police officers face charges, police unions push back and call for the removal of Baltimore’s prosecutor and of course another black man gets shot by authorities by mistake – such is life. It’s a mad, mad, world, but the BBR crew of Masta Talka, the C.O. and Angry Engineer try to find some sense of a planet where Floyd Mayweather is criticized for boxing his way to a victory, more candidates join the GOP presidential circus and Redman gets criticized for not being “ghetto fab-enough” – 14-years ago? This world is pretty odd, but the Hip Hop is funky. Busy Bee; the Crooklyn Dodgers; Sugar Hill Gang; De La Soul, Common, Busta Rhymes and Eminem joined us for double shots of phunky phat rhymes. Yo, white people we really appreciate you, no seriously. Whoa, what is that smell? Smells like P. Poppa Diddy Pop. It’s Boom Bap Radio!
