Walking from Glasgow to Rome - Geraldine McFaul's 2,000 Mile Journey of 'Kindness'

Great British Adventures

In May 2023, Geraldine McFaul set off from her home in Glasgow to walk all the way to Rome. She had two rules, she was not carrying a rucksack, and she was not going over the Alps. With a buggy in tow, Geraldine passed through 6 countries, walking a distance of 2,000 miles on a journey that took her 6 months. But Geraldine's story is more than just a long walk to Rome. At it's heart, this journey was a reminder of the kindness of humanity. It is a story of strangers taking her into their homes, buying food for her, donating to her two charities, Mary's Meals and Dementia UK, and letting her camp in back gardens, church grounds and on village greens. She calls it 'kind-napping' and it happened regularly throughout her journey in Britain and beyond. In this conversation we break down the why and how Geraldine covered such a huge distance on foot, how to break down a journey of such magnitude and how she was inspired with confidence by her experience in the Yes Tribe. We discuss how Geraldine never knew exactly where or how she was sleeping every night, how the kindness of strangers made her journey more fulfilling, why travelling at a slow pace is a lovely way to experience the world, and Geraldine talks through her once in a lifetime experience being presented to a very important person when she arrived in Rome. I am absolutely jazzed for to meet my friend Dave Cornthwaite! Dave is truly a professional adventurer, and I think you'll find one of the most fascinating people you will ever learn about or hear from. I met Dave over 10 years ago while I was kayaking the Mississippi River with friends, and he was breaking a record stand-up paddleboarding. Meeting him really marked me, Dave showed me a new way to live, and a new way to be. He came to me at a time when I was really striving to prove something to myself and the world, and Dave simply offered another option. Another way to live. A simpler and more beautiful way to exist. Dave has a very interesting story. Like many of us, Dave went to college, had a desk job, and was pursuing the ordinary life path that most of us do. But it just didn't do it for him. One day, Dave woke up and decided he was done with what he felt was an incredibly boring, depressing, uninspiring path he was on. There had to be more out there.  And so, he quit his job to pursue a more interesting life. Over the past ten or twelve years Dave has completed some extraordinary feats including breaking a world record of Paddling 2404 miles down the Mississippi River, skateboarding across the entire continent of Australia, and even sailing across the Pacific Ocean. The amazing thing about Dave is that, as he will constantly remind you, is that he is in many ways an ordinary guy. He's not incredibly athletic, certainly is not wealthy, and is not trying to prove anything to anybody. Instead, Dave has been on a journey to challenge himself, to live an interesting life, and to inspire anyone who will listen to say yes more to the beauty that life has to offer. Website: www.davecornthwaite.comWebsite: www.sayyesmore.comSocial: https://instagram.com/davecorn?utm_medium=copy_link

Dave Cornthwaite, Say Yes More to adventure! Dave Cornthwaite started saying yes to adventures in his mid-twenties and created a lifetime mission called the Expedition1000 with the aim of completing twenty-five different journeys, each over 1000 miles, spending less than £1000 and using a different form of non-motorised transport. So far he has completed fifteen, just ten to go! And these amazing adventures take a lot less time than you think. So what's stopping you and what's stopping me from great adventures? The biggest barrier is our mindset. We are too quick to say no to adventures and close down the possibility. When Dave asked a group of people if they wanted to go wild camping too many said no, but some said yes! Those who attended the impromptu camping session were encouraged to say yes more, which inspired Dave to start a movement called, ‘SayYesMore'The SayYesMore movement has over 10,000 members from all over the world. They even have their own festival called the ‘Yestival'.Dave's message is so powerful - what would happen if you started to say yes to adventure more often?Alright, let's do this.https://youtu.be/uFZwEMQq-v8

“Opportunities are there for making and taking” Dave Cornthwaite goes through his absolutely incredible journey of overcoming self-doubt, severe unhappiness and living not knowing who he was. But he decided to move in a better direction and not look back. An adventure, a community leader and a compulsive doer, get ready for a journey of learning how to say yes more! He splits his life into two parts, the first 25 years and the years after that. He was bullied at school and didn’t have many friends and that effected his teenage and adult life, but then at the age of 25 things changed. They were either going to change for the better or the worse and Dave had to make a decision. He realised he was really unhappy and so he started to say yes more! Then he started skateboarding and after 2 weeks he quit his job and decided to try and break the long-distance record on a skateboard. In June 2006 he became the first person to skateboard all 856 miles of the length of Britain from Land's End to John o' Groats. He then went off to Australia and Skateboarded across the whole country, which would lead to his determination to do 25 different trips of at least 1000 miles on non-motorised transport. Dave also built the Yes Tribe, a community of people with the mantra of being able to “ say Yes More.” The Yes Tribe is 5 years old and has over 25,000 people in groups around the world, and in total hold around 1000 events around the world. Dave takes us on a journey of self-doubt and negativity, one that had no direction, to leading him in a life in so many directions….   Resources

In 2015 Spike Reid, crossed England, coast to coast, by stand up paddle board. Spike is no stranger to adventure, having worked at the Royal Geographic Society for several years, which gave him the chance to rub shoulders with such legendary explorers as Sir Ranulph Fiennes. Already a qualified mountain leader and worldwide adventurer, his encounter at the Society with Dave Cornthwaite (who paddled the length of the Mississippi) led to him to join a team who circumnavigated Martinique on stand up paddle boards. Spike has always travelled across the world in search of adventure, however in recent years he has become a leading champion of local adventures, hence his recent crossing of England. In this fascinating chat, Spike talks through his paddle board adventures and inspires us to follow his example by adventuring locally. He also he covers useful information for aspiring adventurers including his approach to adventure kit selection and how to keep it lightweight. Support this podcast

In this episode, we talk to Dave Cornthwaite who, a few days after we spoke to him, turned 40. Dave is an Adventurer and Community Leader and he'll be something else soon. Fifteen years previously, on the morning of his 25th birthday, Dave woke up at home in Swansea and spoke to his cat Kiwar. He had a 10 hour a day Playstation habit (Dave not Kiwar), a job he hated and a girlfriend he didn't like. Despite having everything he'd been told a successful adult needed. He didn't see any reason to be around. He was in his words . . . a loser. That was the moment . . . the moment he decided to swap negativity for positivity, the moment he decided to say yes more. Very quickly Dave was exploring Swansea on a skateboard . . . his first-ever skateboard. This was the start of a journey that lead very quickly to him breaking the world record for the longest journey by skateboard. . . Perth to Brisbane . . . 3618 miles. Many adventures have followed including paddle-boarding the Mississippi with alligators and Marathon DeSable, the world's toughest race. Many more have followed. It would be wrong to assume that Dave's conversation with his cat was a turning from which everything panned out just fine. What Dave has experienced is 15 years of real adventure . . . and all that comes with it. Dave has learned that the periods he feels most alive will inevitably be followed by periods of gloom . . . like long hangovers. But . . . on balance, Dave considers the ups to be worth the downs because he knows a 'just existing life' just isn't enough. "My mother went through all that pain bringing me into the world. My guest today, Ross Jennings, did all the "right" things growing up. He went to school, took music lessons, studied hard, got a job, made pretty good money, and then he was like: wait a minute, is this it? He was convinced that there had to be more to life than cubicles, boring work, and shitty bosses. After some time asking himself "what the hell am I going to do, this sucks", on a whim he stumbled across an event in London called the Adventure Travel show. There he was exposed to some cool ideas and even cooler people. Ross met this guy, Dave Cornthwaite - who is this whacky entrepreneur who calls himself a "self-propelled record-breaking adventurer", which basically means he breaks world records by embarking on these crazy long un-motorized journeys, you know things like skateboarding across Australia and water-biking 1000 miles around Norway. Ross was intrigued, understandably so. That night, he went home and decided he was going to be the first person to play the bagpipes in every single country on the planet. And that's exactly what he's done. Along the way, Ross has become a successful entrepreneur and public speaking, founding a content creation company called Three Wheels and sharing stories of his journeys and success psychology to audiences all over the world. .... and oh does he have stories to tell.  What I think I loved most about this episode was not just how Ross has designed a compelling and sustainable way to bake adventure and new experiences into his day to day life, but also how effectively music can bring people together. I love the bagpipes, I'm a nut. Maybe it's my heritage or something, but with the drone and everything, it just makes me happy. What I find so fascinating, is that all Ross has to do is pull out his pipes, play a couple of notes, and all the sudden all of our cultural differences, religious point of views, politicial idealogies, fade away - and we're just able to connect over music.  Show Resources: Ross's Website The First Piper Instagram Page Three Wheels Co Instagram Page Three Wheels Co website   Dave Cornthwaite The Adventure Travel Show (London) Carol Dweck - Author of Mindset

Dave Cornthwaite is a Yes Man. He is also an Ultra Endurance Adventure Traveler, a Film Maker, an Author, a world record holder and a Global Public speaker. He’s built his life around sharing his stories of self-propelled travel but Dave started his life after college as a Graphic Designer. Unfortunately, he was terrible at graphic design and reached a point where he was miserable with his choices, but he didn’t know how to start the daunting task of building a new life. He started the daunting task of changing his life by doing two things: He made the simple decision to say yes more. He bought a skateboard. "Don't Be Afraid of the Unusual. The world is a good place and it always works out if you give it a chance to." He quit his job and literally skateboarded out of the office and continued for 3,618 miles breaking the Guinness world record and that was just the beginning… Since then he’s continued to travel for 10s of thousands of miles completely self-propelled. Kayaks, bikes, swimming, anything that keeps him moving forward. In this episode we discuss... His routine life of working, playing video games and repeating the process over and over. How his life changed when he bought a skateboard. Quitting his job by skateboarding out of the office. Setting his sites on breaking the Guinness World Record by skateboarding across Australia. The challenges of his first expedition and the similarities of building a startup. Accidentally starting a cult. Buying a bus. The evolution of the Yes Tribe. How he funds his lifestyle as an Adventure Traveler. 25 expeditions of at least 1000 miles by human power only, NO ENGINES! How would your life be different if you made the decision to Say Yes More? DNX - Digitale Nomaden Podcast mit Marcus Meurer & Felicia Hargarten

LIFE HACKZ QUICKIE Ganz frisch aus Bali. Already a qualified mountain leader and worldwide adventurer, his encounter at the Society with Dave Cornthwaite (the Guinness world record holder for distance travelled on a paddle board) led to him to join a team who circumnavigated Martinique on stand up paddle boards. Adventure is good for everyone. "The biggest risk is getting to the end of your life and looking back and thinking 'Man I could have done more.'" -Dave Cornthwaite The Cheat Sheet: What training does he do for his adventures? This kills ambition more than anything else, what is it? How many hours a day are most employees productive? How to deal with naysayers. When was the last time he had his own home? And so much more... Can you imagine skateboarding the length of Great Britain? Now what if you had just recently picked up a longboard for the first time? That's exactly what today's guest did, and he broke the world record doing so. Today Dave Cornthwaite joins us to talk about his adventures, including Expedition 1,000, and how he became a traveler, author, filmmaker and speaker on the subject of adventure travel. All of that and more on the 356th edition of The Art of Charm. More About This Show: Dave wasn't born into a life of adventure, he cultivated it. On his 25th birthday he woke up feeling completely disenchanted with his life. He had a great job earning a good living, had a lovely home, a significant other and a cat. In other words, everyone would think he had the ideal life. But in his heart he knew he only loved his cat, and that cat was about to have a much better day than he was. That was Dave's turning point. Soon he quit his job and decided he was going to skate around Australia, breaking the world record in the process. To prepare he simply skateboarded every day for a couple of weeks and then he wheeled his way across the length of Great Britain, thereby setting his first world record. He didn't know how he was going to do either of these objectives when he set out to do them, he simply decided he was going to do them. He trained, learned and sorted things out as he went along. And he hasn't looked back since. Within those first two years of leaving his job, he broke several world records, landed a book deal and skated the length of both Great Britain and Australia. He's also in the midst of Expedition 1000: 25 journeys of 1000 miles or more using non-motorized transport. Not bad for a guy who had been living a pretty "normal" life until then! So how did he make that shift and how did he know to do so? Dave says there were signs of course, but most important he knew to follow his gut. His instinct told him something wasn't right, and there was more available to life than just going to a job, collecting a paycheck and accumulating "stuff". In addition to his gut telling him to search for more, he recalls not wanting to go to work on Monday. He also spent money on useless things, as a way to fit in and a way to fill the void that was creeping in from lack of happiness in his overall life. Those were his big clues, along with what his gut told him. If you find yourself in that same boat, and you know what you want to do next but you've got some fear, how do you get up the gumption to do it? Dave says things are far scarier in your mind and your thoughts, than they are in real life. So stop thinking so much and go do the things you need to do. And don't be bothered by the naysayers who try to stop you. Dave has heard his fair share of these folks, and even still hears from some of them today. What he's learned is when people are trying to dissuade you or they are speaking to your fears, it's not actually your fears they are speaking to but their own fears. When someone tries to talk you out of your big goal or dream just know it's their own fear they're trying to assuage. His final bit of wisdom on the subject is to remember it takes tremendous courage even to vocalize your dreams, so if your friends aren't supportive of you and encouraging you then they aren't real friends. There's tons more wisdom shared in this episode with Dave, tune in to hear his thoughts on how to say yes more, and have more opportunities show up in your life along with why we all need a bit of adventure in your lives. He has an adventurous spirit and it was terrific to hear where he's been and what he's learned from his last decade of adventure.
