Laverne Waddington discovered weaving by accident—bike accident, to be precise. Recuperating from a mountain biking crash in Utah, she discovered a book on Navajo weaving and was immediately intrigued. A local exhibit of Diné textiles enthralled her, and she set about learning to weave in the Navajo style. Returning to Patagonia, where she had been living, she built a simple loom and explored weaving on her own until it became clear that she would need to move north to satify her hunger for weaving knowledge, settling in Bolivia. Over the following decades, Laverne traveled in South and Central America, learning backstrap techniques from indigenous weavers. Her curiosity has led her to the Andean Highlands, Guatemala, and other regions to learn hand-manipulated and pick-up methods and patterns from skilled local weavers. Laverne loves to explore complex and intricate weaving styles, enjoying the way that each inch of warp and weft passes through her hands in a variety of pick-up techniques. Weaving on a backstrap loom, she sits inside each weaving project. Through videos, online classes, books, and ebooks, she teaches other weavers how to set up a backstrap loom for themselves and weave a variety of patterns. Teaching backstrap and pick-up techniques is as much a part of her practice as deepening her understanding of the weaving structures. In this episode, discover Laverne Waddington's passions and processes. Links Laverne has maintained a blog and weaving journal on her website (https://backstrapweaving.wordpress.com/) since 2009. Laverne's books (https://www.taprootvideo.com/instructorClasses.jsf?iid=3) are available from Taproot Video. Laverne offers a number of tutorials (https://backstrapweaving.wordpress.com/tutorials/) of techniques she practices as well as videos (https://backstrapweaving.wordpress.com/videos/) of a variety of weaving techniques and traditions. “The anti-rape movement is a sociopolitical movement[1] which is part of the movement seeking to combat violence against and the abuse of women. The movement seeks to change community attitudes to violence against women, such as attitudes of entitlement to sex and victim blaming, and attitudes of women such as self-blame for violence. It seeks to promote changes to rape laws or laws of evidence which enable rapists to avoid penalties because, for example, victims are discouraged from reporting assaults, or because the rapist is entitled to immunity or because a rapist (as a defendant) is capable in law of denigrating the victim. The movement has been successful in jurisdictions, though many attitudes still persist, and despite changes to laws and significant increases in reporting of assaults, violence against women still persists at high levels. The movement came about in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when new concepts of rape arose out of second wave feminism and the reevaluation of women's daily lives socially and with regard to the social institutions with which they interact. Prior to this reexamination, rape had been viewed as a "sex crime carried out by pathological men",[2] who were unable to control their own sexual desires.[3] Feminists began to emphasize the role of power dynamics specifically with regard to the perpetration of rape as a crime committed primarily by men against women.[4] This revised definition of rape was reframed from the perspective of the victim. The act of rape was asserted to be a way in which societal gender roles, the way someone acts out either masculinity or femininity, were enforced and the hierarchy of power placing males above females was maintained.[3] Rape was thus defined as a form of violence used to ensure male power, a form of social control over women and children.[5] Known as the "anti-rape" or "rape prevention" movement,[6] it was founded with the conceptions that sexual violence and violence against women more generally, is a tool of social control used to keep women in a subordinate position to men and that women need to take action, that aids victims of sexual violence to become "survivors" of violence instead of victims.[3] The anti-rape movement continues, with growing awareness in the United States public about the concept of rape culture, coinciding with the increasing popularity of feminism.” -Wikipedia. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

Do you ever go grocery shopping without any sort of list and end up forgetting half of what you actually needed? Not fun, right? So why would you take that same approach with how you operate your supply chain? On our season finale of Supply Chain Therapy, listen to how Rebeca Illsley, COO of Thermacell Repellents, successfully incorporates process into an ever-growing demand pipeline. Yet another veteran in the industry, Rebecca held a variety of roles at The Clorox Company, including Director of Manufacturing & Director of Supply Chain Integration, before making the leap to Thermacell. In the conversation with Alex and Michelle, Rebecca shares what big lessons she's brought to the Thermacell team, and what she's prioritized first since joining the organization. Some of the highlights include segmentation, team building, and focusing on S&OP first and foremost. Given that Thermacell products are EPA registered, Rebecca highlights the ways in which your manufacturing is impacted when producing safe, high-quality products. Later on, you'll also hear Rebecca talk about what it was like to partially step away from her career in order to build her family and raise her two daughters. Hint – It's totally possible! In addition, she gives her take on how her experience has been in this male-dominated industry, and what advice she has for others looking to tighten the gender gap. —Guest BioRebecca Illsley is the Chief Operating Officer of Thermacell Repellents Inc. She started her career in consumer packaged goods 24 years ago in Research and Development with Frito-Lay followed by Coca-Cola. Rebecca took a pause in her career for six years opting to stay at home with her two daughters. She returned to work full time at The Clorox Company where she held a variety of roles in supply chain over 14 years. Those roles included Manager of Contract Manufacturing, Director of Global Quality Assurance, Director of Supply Chain Integration and Director of Manufacturing. Rebecca is very proud to be leading a talented supply chain organization at Thermacell, driving growth by disrupting the mosquito repellent category with exciting product innovation.Rebecca grew up in Nova Scotia Canada and has a BSc in Food Science from Acadia University and a MS in Food Science from the University of Minnesota. —Guest Quote“My opinion is: S&OP is the brain of the supply chain. So if you don't have S&OP where it needs to be, then you really can't manage your demand. And you really can't manage your inventory, and you can't manage your supply plans.” - Rebecca Illsley—Time Stamps *(2:00) Dynamic logistics in VMS*(7:56) All about Thermacell Repellents*(9:37) Joining the team from Clorox*(12:39) Recuperating in-house manufacturing *(16:16) Why you need to reinvest in your supply chain*(19:14) How to shift to a quality control mindset*(22:21) Overcoming the gender gap in supply chain*(27:35) Advice for ensuring equity *(30:55) Speed round—SponsorThis podcast is powered by the team at Stord. Between 1994 and 1997, James Brown's loaded magazine became the must-buy and must-be-in publication of the decade. It won every award going, year after year, and came to define not only its audience but also a generation. Bright, loud, funny, provocative, ambitious and careless, loaded was read from the barracks of Afghanistan to the England dressing room at Euro '96. It captured a hedonistic lifestyle of alcohol, cocaine and more. The last great hurrah before the end of the century. It was the biggest noise in the golden generation of magazine publishing, rocketing from zero to half a million sales in a matter of months. What MTV had been to the 80s, loaded was to the 90s.ANIMAL HOUSE follows James Brown's remarkable career from a high school drop-out fanzine writer with few qualifications to NME features editor aged 22, and loaded founder at 27. In between, his mother died in tragic circumstances and gradually his own drug and alcohol use began to take over. Loaded‘s unexpected success legitimised (and paid for) James's lifestyle, and it wasn't until he crashed and burned at GQ, and went through rehab, that any sense of perspective kicked in.Recuperating on the island of Mustique whilst plotting his return with Oz founder Felix Dennis, James was asked by neighbour Lord Patrick Lichfield: “How on earth did you manage to sell so many magazines whilst taking so many drugs?”This book is his answer.Buy James's book here: https://www.quercusbooks.co.uk/titles/james-brown/animal-house/9781787477902/ Buy tickets for Vittorio's Soho Theatre run: https://sohotheatre.com/shows/vittorio-angelone-translations/Thanks for watching! How class division amongst Black America facilitated housing descrimination. We will be joined by professor Preston Smith, II About Dr. Smith: Postwar black politics with an emphasis on housing and class. Inner-city neighborhood revitalization including economic development, affordable housing, quality public education, and equal and adequate delivery of municipal services Preston Smith's research interests in urban studies and postwar black politics are reflected in his many publications and presentations. He has been published in such journals as the Journal of Urban History and edited volumes such as Without Justice For All. He has made presentations at Social Science History Association meeting, Center for the Study of Race, Inequality and Politics, Institute for Social Policy Studies, at Yale University, and The Centennial of W.E.B. DuBois's Souls of Black Folks symposium at Williams College. His most recent book, Racial Democracy and the Black Metropolis: Housing Policy in Postwar Chicago (Univ Of Minnesota Press, 2012) examines housing debates in Chicago that go beyond black and white politics, showing how class and factional conflicts among African Americans actually helped to reproduce stunning segregation along economic lines. Smith's commitment to urban studies led to his becoming Director of the Community-Based Learning (CBL) program at the Weissman Center for Leadership and the Liberal Arts. Smith's Involvement with CBL began with his development of an advanced seminar that utilized CBL pedagogy. In this class students interact with local communities through community-based research and service, allowing them to enhance their understanding of public concerns while fostering leadership and advocacy skills. Smith is part of group who developed a faculty seminar that examines Puerto Rican history and culture in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and on the island. The unique feature of this seminar is that it combines area college faculty and community leaders from Holyoke. It is targeted to faculty and community-based organizations that collaborate on community-university partnerships. Since many of the families living in Holyoke are Puerto Rican, the seminar focuses on educating CBL students on Puerto Rican history and culture. Smith believes that one of the ways to best teach politics is to be politically engaged. He is a member of the Interim National Council of the Labor Party, an independent political party that comes out of the labor movement. The Debs-Jones-Douglass Institute, which is the educational and cultural arm of the Labor Party, sponsors the Free Public Higher Education campaign. Smith is currently the co-chair of the Institute's national campaign, which asserts that higher education is a necessity in today's economy and society and, therefore, should be paid for by the federal government. Modeled after the GI Bill®, the campaign would cost $34 billion if everyone currently enrolled at a public institution were to have free tuition and fees. Recuperating the tax cuts that have not benefited working families in this country could pay for this amount.     You can read some of Professor Smith's recent work here: https://catalyst-journal.com/author/preston-h-smith-ii   You Can Buy the Book Here: https://www.amazon.com/Books-Preston-H-Smith-II/s?rh=n%3A283155%2Cp_27%3APreston+H.+Smith+II   Thank you guys again for taking the time to check this out.  We appreciate each and everyone of you.  If you have the means, and you feel so inclined, BECOME A PATRON! The Two Man Forecheck is pressing on in this week's episode.  The New York Rangers have a slew of defensemen vying for a spot next to Jacob Trouba.  One is Libor Hajek, a 22 year old currently playing in the Czech league.  Good for him and the team as he gets himself into game shape and put himself into a potential top pair spot.  Ryan Nugent-Hopkins needs a new deal.  His current contract expires at the end of this season and the Oilers need to figure out how to fit him in and give him a raise at the same time.  Tyler Smith survived the Humboldt Broncos crash two years ago.  He is now speaking out, letting men know that it is acceptable to talk about their mental health.  We wish him, the survivors and their families nothing but happiness and success in whatever they do! The deputy commissioner of the NHL has stated that there could be a shortened season this upcoming year, but is it financially viable to do so? Finally, Anthony Duclair has still not been signed by the Senators or any other team for that matter.  Could the Bruins bring him in?  There is a rumor that the B's should trade DeBrusk and Carlo to the Flames for Hanifin and Bennett.  Not a good trade but is there a possible starting point here?  All this and more so listen, comment and Enjoy the Show!

22X-Day "2019," July 6 at Wisteria with Dr. Hal, Rev. Ivan Stang, Princess Wei 'R.' D'oh!, and Rev. Angry Larry. RADIO SAFE. Inexplicable horror intro- Let's walk down this lane... going straight to another show for you. The faithful have been judged. Good! Saturday schedule. Recuperating; Bobtism at 2 pm in pond. Old Sequaw. The Wall of Ticks. Costume or Not Ball. Bulldada Auction of Exploding Death-Robot. "Bob" Burning late tonight. It still COULD be X-Day -- any second! - as we say in our July 6 disappointment. California earthquakes and Hal's dinosaur collection. One may never prepare adequately. The impossible evacuation of huge cities. There's no escape. The rescue pilots will mock you in the rising river. You can't have safety. There go the saucers flying away empty-handed. What if everybody outside of Wisteria got Ruptured? Thanks Oboba. Thanks Philo. Philo has left the camp. Rev. Sosodada has returned to the folds. Many folds at the Bobtism. Saints? The Taints of the Church. Taint Paul, Taint Philo, Taint Peter. Philo tain't here. Has to mow his graveyard of humans. Stang has a graveyard only of shellfish. And the fossil devil skeleton, alien skeleton, robot skeleton. Devil skull is like bug mandible. Demonsaurus Rex. Fossil Cretaceous devil has a heart bone and a bacula. Pappy's swizzle sticks made of dick bones of walrus, bear, raccoon. The Walrus Pizzle Murder. Stang's Cabinet of Wonders at the impregnable fortress -- though "Bob" impregnated the actual fortress. That time "Bob" raped Pater Nostrils car while they were inside. "Bob's" bastard auto children. Breaks your muffler. Sopping! Gypsy dance music from "House of Frankenstein" and plot summary. The hunchback girl's crush on Larry Talbot, who is always whining and fretting. Some SubGeniuses THINK they can pass as human or even think they're human. Stockholm syndrome. THE THING couldn't be a mummy. The papier mache Indian mummy and baby mummy. Stang knows where the one switch is to shut off every light in Carlsbad Caverns. Smuggle in glow-in-the dark Indian Ghost Spirit outfits, plunge the cave into drkness, then we rise up and moan. And hope there's not a good guy with a gun. Panicking people impling selves on stalactites. The kids who hid in the cave. Stang's been to Carlsbad Caverns 9 times and will preserve it on his escape vessel IN the Grand Canyon. SubGs not pure enough for Xists... minds filled with desires and coffee... Need new voice! Angry Larry? Hal muttering... Rev. Angry Larry joins in. Philo's mechanical heart. Bobtism ad. Snore-fest X-Day. Description of the clown show with weinermobile jumping over 3 flaming cars. Weinermobiles of America. Oscar Meyer Hotdogs vs. Nathan's. Need crowd for Bulldada Auction - the clowns want the big penis. Just the beat-up head. It had been beat on mostly by dames. The violent Women's Revolts of the old SubG cons. The penis-head mask looks like a Toho character vs. Big Man Japan. DICK-HEAD. The mushroom man - "I'm President Trump's crotch." Mario Cart stumpy-dick. The problem of unusual looking penii such as Bill Clinton, Michael Jackson. "is your pecker spotted like your hands?" Speckled pecker disease. Ray gun from the late President's estate. That car's full of clowns! Extraterrestrial or Japanese. Putting batteries in new robot toy. Acid and corrosion in the robots. You may already be a weiner. LSD is the bomb" PSA. Rev. Angry Larry is gonna "do" the raygun. The kind of disintegrating gun that is slowly disintegrating in the basement. Now Stang misses Philo irritating him. Larry can be just as annoying if we want. Stang is not the way he used to be. Still hasn't hung Dobbhead or set up projector. We got the big Eyeball up there. The mystery of the ray gun batteries. Something inside the old toy is pulling back on the old corroded batteries. Stang's hat was found, after being used as a mic stand. ((CUT hat stuff)) ASBESTOS UNDERWEAR - Media Barrage bits - Chas song - All Bulldada Auction items are death traps. WEI COMES! Her helm and space crown. Raygun is broken plus sound effects. Auctioning Bobble-Body Zombie. After the Bobtism. Plenty of time since aliens didn't come - time to kill, murder and create. "We're gonna need a bigger clock-killing dagger." The Behemoth. We still have to do Starwood. Sentenced to another week of Slack, darn it! Normal ordinary tedious antislack would be great. Enough of this inebriating and orgy-ing. ((REMOVED: While we were gone Claudia pried boards off fence and escaped. So it was X-Day for Claudia. Bit of BUDDY lyrics. Stang looks for lyric sheets while Wei stalls. OCD -- not disorders, super-powers. Long waiting. Finds a roach. Arguing about the music. Wei and Stang sing BUDDY -- horribly.)) Rev. Watt deFalk's book THE BLASPHEMERA - three auction items so far that aren't deadly boobie-traps. They'll only blind you metaphorically. Claudia escaped -- Buddy slept through it. "I'm not really a rebel, I'm just an IDIOT." -- Faux "It's okay if we're only offending dumbasses" -- "Bob" Not just okay but our Bob-given right and duty! If they're offended, that proves they're dumbasses! It's an intelligence test. Below a SubGenius. CAN mean "beyond SubGenius." Can't be in Mensa and CoSG at same time -- but we have a cure for geniusness - two cures: ball peen hammer, and drugs. Plain liquor will do it. Geniuses don't need livers! SubGs don't need brains but do eat brains. Stang can't handle the allergen any more. Xists have Ruptured bits and pieces: his energy, his memory -- now a wisp, a shadow, a SHARD of a man. Every single cell suffering the Pain of A Hundred Billion Pains... times the number of cells. Even my bowel bugs have indigestion and insomnia. Hurry up, X-Day. The Fountain of Youth wasn't any of those pils. That which does not kill me makes me weaker. All old people talk about: health problems. Learned a lot more about criminal law and justice system than I wanted to. You learn the most interesting things, like felons can't be insured. Cath's THINGS I DON'T WANT TO SEE, HEAR, AND SMELL ANYMORE. Samples of Anti-C-! the RubGenius musings. Things she doesn't want to hear. Things she doesn't want to see on a daily basis. (Ass cracks, guards, razor wire, and women.) Things she doesn't want to smell any more. Her roomie wants a boyfriend. She has Jesus, what else could she need? Cath's observations on death -- she's been dead. Like Polly in Peaky Blinders. She's like the Professor on Gilligan's Island. Remembers lyrics. They were amazed to learn where Israel is and why Robin Hood doesn't just get a gun. They did not know that America was not always English speaking white people. Has to explain Star Wars to them constantly. She was able to "pass" among regular Pinks, but not here. There's racial gangs and she hangs out with the Mexicans. 12-hour trips to doctor on a hot crowded bus. They remind you every step of the way that you are a BUG. On MIA Radio, we interview Anthropologist Zhiying Ma, who explores mental health care in China, including tensions between Western psychiatry and socially-oriented local frameworks. Zhiying Ma is a cultural and medical anthropologist and disability studies scholar whose work explores the experiences and rights of those receiving mental health services in China. Her current book project, Intimate Institutions: Governance and Care Under the Mental Health Legal Reform in Contemporary China, investigates how the Chinese state has placed paternalistic responsibilities on families through their role in the care of those diagnosed with serious mental illnesses, in part through the practice of involuntary hospitalization. Ma came to earn a Ph.D. in Anthropology after questioning psychology’s overemphasis on decontextualized human behavior while majoring in the subject as an undergraduate. She found that anthropology offered the more humanistic and socially oriented lens she was looking for, and this perspective informs her current work. Ma collaborates with psychiatrists, social workers, human rights activists, lawmakers, families, and those with lived experience to not only conduct research but also to take part in China’s ongoing mental health policy discussions and push for community-based, socially inclusive care that is not simply “care as usual.” Please support Mad in America - Donate now

Welcome back to the Inside Yorkshire podcast. In today's episode we listen to authors Eileen Brereton and Anne Wall talk about the role of the Red Cross Auxiliary hospitals, in Yorkshire, during the First World War. They have written a book entitled Home Comforts describing the importance of these medical outposts. Recuperating wounded soldiers, far away from their own families, had home comforts provided for them by VADs in the 32 auxiliary hospitals set up across the county. Eileen and Anne give us a wonderful insight into life in the voluntary aid detachments. These were voluntary units of civilians providing nursing care for military personnel in the United Kingdom and various other countries in the British Empire. The most important periods of operation for these units were during World War I and 2. About the Guests: Eileen Brereton and Anne Wall were Red Cross trainers when they were asked to set up a commemorative WW1 hospital for East Rounton village hall's centenary celebrations in 2006. That began a project that has lasted over 12 years now and taken them on a fascinating voyage of discovery, unearthing information and memorabilia from 32 hospitals in the North Riding of Yorkshire and the VADs (voluntary aid detachments) who worked in them. Valuable Resources: The Book can be purchased from Eileen or Anne contact-  info@northridingVADhospitals.co.uk Home Comforts- The Role of the Red Cross Auxiliary Hospitals in the North East Riding of Yorkshire during the First World War Exhibitions  can be set up in libraries, and museums. Today's guest on the Art of Adventure Podcast is 11/25 of the way through his quest to complete 25 journeys of a thousand miles or more, each via a different mode of non motorized transport. I was really excited to hear that one of his favorite journeys so far ended in my hometown of St. Louis! Dave Cornthwaite has swum the length of the Missouri River and paddle boarded the Mississippi. He has also written three books, entertained audiences on six continents, broken eight world records, and is the founder of www.SayYesMore.com. His new project "Out of Office" takes him around to amazing "office" locations around the world. The only stipulation is that he is not allowed to plan anything more than 10 days in advance, and he barters for all his lodging, food, and transport. I caught up with Dave at Bambu Indah, a boutique luxury eco lodge here in Ubud where he was making a video about the place. Check it out, it's pretty epic. Dave is a really down to earth guy, and a great story teller, I appreciate how thoughtful and real he was in this interview. Quotes: "Just say yes more"- Dave Cornthwaite "I'm always with friends, even if I'm with people I just met" - Dave Cornthwaite "Feeling small [compared to the universe] takes the pressure off" - Dave Cornthwaite "Give yourself a chance to not just simply exist"- Dave Cornthwaite "How can the mindset of our future leaders be more positive?"- Dave Cornthwaite "I'm interested in being a more resilient, interesting person"- Dave Cornthwaite "Quests are a helpful way to be a productive Human"- Dave Cornthwaite "Responsibility is ever so dangerous"- Dave Cornthwaite "The most important thing you can do is understand your skills"- Dave Cornthwaite "Recuperating from a big quest in a new place is really helpful" -Dave Cornthwaite "Adventure is doing new things, but success is being content with what happens"-Dave Cornthwaite "Write to me and tell me what you want to go do, and I will encourage you!"-Dave Cornthwaite Dave gazing out from Bambu Indah after our interview What you will learn in this episode: -How to barter your skills for food, lodging, and transport -The adventurer's videography tools: iPhones and photography drones -How to use goals and quests to be more productive -How to get paid to go on adventures -How to minimize your living expenses -How to learn what you are good at -What are the dangers of responsibility Mentioned in this episode: davecornthwaite.com Dave's books: Life in the Slow Lane: A patient quest for adventure Date: The diary of one man's ultimate dating challenge BoardFree: The Story of an Incredible Skateboard Journey Across Australia Thanks Dave Cornthwaite! New technologies and media systems have been deployed for new distributions of power, knowledge and social organization. What do you see as the most compelling shifts in these sectors? What are the greatest dangers and opportunities, and with what implications? Factors such as influence over regulatory process, ever-expanding proprietary claims to technology and code, and the control of information including personal data all constitute zones of contention in this time of transition. What techniques and strategies might we use to enhance public literacy and efficacy in these matters? What role might best be taken up by educators and media specialists when the old certainties slip away? Developing new tools and methodologies to make sense of emerging behaviors? Recuperating lost literacy and cognitive skills? Deconstructing legal and regulatory structures, and pressing for new safeguards? Encouraging the production of new forms of content? As new generations enter a digital culture that seems ever more taken for granted as a condition — and ever more unfathomable as a technological practice — how can we cultivate and empower a critical citizenry? Networked digital technologies have been used to construct new collectivities and social formations. What are the most promising of these from your perspective, and what lessons can we take from them as we seek to enable individuals to engage with one another to form active and effective publics? Transitional moments bring with them inadvertent opportunities, whether new forms of data (hyperlinks, tags, recommendation systems), new standardization paradigms, or new affordances for representation. Although these opportunities can be put to many ends, how might they serve the interests of illuminating shifts in power, improving social equity and enhancing civic engagement?
