Twa Teams, One Street: the football podcast that’s as obsessed by Dundee FC and Dundee United as you are!

Dundee United are back in action this weekend – and it couldn't be tougher as the Tangerines head to Celtic Park. Does the Hoops' Bayern Munich effort give the Terrors' cause for optimism?  We also discuss Owen Stirton's bright start on loan at Montrose – four goals in three games – and ask whether Richard Odada can make the grade at Tannadice. Meanwhile, Dundee will hope to build on their Scottish Cup win over Airdrie when they return to league duty against Aberdeen.   Can the Dee take advantage of the Dons' defensive frailties…while addressing their own? The team analyse how Tony Docherty could, and should, set up for the visit of the Reds and discuss where Joe Shaughnessy could fit into things in the final months of the season. And will Scott Fraser play a part in the run-in for the Dark Blues after another set-back?  Host Tom Duthie is joined by George Cran, Alan Temple and Graeme Finnan to chew the fat.  Twa Teams, One Street is proud to be supported by SPAR Scotland.  You can get us on Youtube too! youtube.com/@TheCourierUK/videos  Interested in local sport news, you can save now with The Courier Sport Pack. Dundee and United suffered the same fate as our two clubs crashed out of the Premier Sports Cup.  United's last-gasp exit against Motherwell created more questions than answers – namely, is it time for Louis Moult to start? And will Jim Goodwin play with two up front against Kilmarnock?  Dundee succumbed to defeat against Rangers and, while a trip to Ibrox is always a testing one, the defensive stats make increasingly grim reading.   Can the arrival of Scott Fraser at least bolster the midfield following Luke McCowan's exit?   Courier sports editor Sean Hamilton is in the hot seat, joined by Jim Spence, Graeme Finnan and Dundee United correspondent Alan Temple.  Get us on Youtube too! youtube.com/@TheCourierUK/videos

(Original photo by Meg Wagener for Unsplash) Let me start by thanking the show's newest Patron, Scott Fraser, for joining the family! Next: my apologies: I counted on taking a week's break but not two. I got remarkably sick a couple of times in the past week, culminating with a trip that involved having testing swabs stuck up my nose to varying depths, depending on what they were looking for that time. They were relieved to tell me that I "only" had food poisoning...they think. Reassuring? Anyway, if I sound a little rough in this episode, now you know why. There are several elements of the story behind "Maggie May" which are going to sound very familiary to you, if only because I've told a variation on them at some point in the past with regard to other songs. On the other hand, there are definitely a few elements to "Maggie May" which you're not going to hear anywhere else, because not every song starts with getting deflowered at a jazz festival's swan song. Oh--and as promised, here's Godley and Creme's first video, for their own "Englishman in New York." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQr6FYFEjI8&ab_channel=JoeyOddo Click here to become a Patron of the show. New in this update:Smoke in Nanaimo continues Smoky skies have suspended mail service in Nanaimo. Canada Post says it will not be making deliveries due to unsafe air quality conditions. Meanwhile, BC's Provincial Health Officers is advising people to wear masks while outside, because of the smoke from US wildfires. Dr. Bonnie Henry says symptoms from smoke irritation can mimic COVID-19. She says she supports children continuing to go to school, despite the fact they will remain indoors throughout the day, in rooms where the windows are closed."Schools can be a very safe place for people, and children and all adults those in the school system. It's a place where you can be protected from both COVID-19 and from the smoky skies. We need to go back to our basics making sure we are screening out and if we have concerns about symptoms, to stay away from school. To make sure that we have our distancing, our hand cleaning, that we close windows during those conditions and that we use, if available, the HVAC systems with HEPA filters, which some places have."—Dr. Bonnie Henry.Rising COVID-19 Case NumbersBritish Columbia continues to see rising case counts, deaths and hospitalizations due to COVID-19. There have been 317 new cases confirmed since Friday and 6 more deaths, including the first coronavirus death in the Northern Health Region. There are five new infections confirmed in the Island Health region but no hospitalizations. However, there are 58 people in hospital elsewhere in BC, including 16 in intensive care. Nevertheless, BC's Minister of Health, Adrian Dix says he still intends to expand visits to assisted living and long term care homes."The visits that have been conducted to date have been positive, that we haven't seen from those visits any cases and that gives us confidence that we're on the right track. It's clear that as a goal, we want to increase those visits so that's the effort that's going on right now."—Minister of Health, Adrian Dix.Dix says the issue of visits in care homes is the most common topic in communication he receives from the public.Premier Horgan to call an election? The speculation over whether the Premier will call an election this month continues to grow, with the MLA for Mid-Island-Pacific Rim announcing he will not run the next time around. Scott Fraser, who is also the Minister of Indigenous Relations, has been an MLA for the past 15 years and before that, he was the mayor of Tofino. Fraser says "It is time to spend more time with my loved ones and allow space for the leaders of tomorrow to step forward." B.C.'s Minister of Forests, Don Donaldson has also said he will not run again.

Trudeau will now be heading up a minority government, and there is "Western Separation" chatter online in Alberta, after the Liberals failed to win any seats in Alberta and Saskatchewan. It doesn't sound like the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion is up for negotiation by the minority Liberal government. He says government will be "continuing with the Trans Mountain expansion." When each customer buys four and a half times the average amount of stuff per visit and you attract four times the average number of visitors, you make eighteen times as much profit. (4 x 4.5 = 18) If you run your convenience store according to the rules and conventions of convenience stores, you're going to have yourself a conventional convenience store. (1.) But if you run your convenience store according to the rules and conventions of a successful nightclub, four times as many people will stop to buy gas from you and you'll sell four and a half times as much coffee, candy, cookies and snacks to each visitor… You're going to make a glowing pile of money. People will think you're radioactive because you'll glitter when you walk. Complete strangers will ask you for your autograph. Pretty women will throw their room keys onto the stage.Just ask my partner, Scott Fraser. He created that convenience store 12 years ago and it's been pumping out profits like a Texas oil well ever since. His competitors tell him he's doing it wrong. (2.) If you run a gym according to the rules and conventions of gyms, you're going to have yourself a conventional gym. But run that gym according to the rules of an exclusive country club and… BOOM, you glitter when you walk. (3.) If you run a lawn fertilizer company as though it were (A.) a public utility, and (B.) a one-price, all-you-can-eat gourmet buffet… BOOM, room keys on the stage. Don't conform to the rules of your business category. Reconform your business to the rules of a time-tested, proven business model that behaves completely differently than your own. A standard practice in one business category is often revolutionary in another. This isn't “thinking outside the box.” This isn't “a paradigm shift.” You and I aren't going to use those worn-out phrases because you and I aren't posers in empty suits. You and I glitter when we walk. Have you noticed how the best TV shows always cut to commercial during a climax in the action? I'm going to do that today. I hope you don't mind. Next week I'll tell you where you can find a video of me explaining all the real-world details of exactly what we did for that convenience store, that gym and that fertilizer company. In the meantime… Keep glitterin', kid. It looks good on you. Roy H. Williams

Days Of Being Wild is a label we've been keeping a keen eye on over the last 12 months or so. With their tagline of 'slightly deranged club music' it's hard not to be interested, and they have soon caught the ear of Ivan Smagghe, Andrew Weatherall, Chloe and Scott Fraser amongst others. We approached them to record a mix for us and they presented us with this fine live session recorded by label head Catalepsia (aka Jerome Bazzanella) at their monthly DOBW session at Willerhof in France. We're informed there are lots of forthcoming tracks from the label included. Strap in, lets get wild... http://soundcloud.com/days_of_being_wild

Delighted to have our next podcast put together by a producer who's music we've quickly become major fans of over the last couple of years. Timothy Fairplay makes up the Scrutton St studio axis with Scott Fraser and a certain Andrew Weatherall, forming The Asphodells with the latter who have just released their debut album to critical acclaim on Weatherall's Rotters Golf Club label. Tim's mix contains lots of exclusive tracks you wont hear elsewhere for a while, including upcoming new productions from Tim himself and his alter-ego Antoine Rouge. Strap in, we are going for a ride... Track ID's on request :)

Exclusive alert. We are delighted to have secured a rare mix from one of our favourite producers of last year. Scott Fraser makes up the revered group of producers that is Andrew Weatherall, Sean Johnston, Timothy Fairplay and Daniel Avery that share the same underground bunker studio in East London, affectionately calling themselves 'The Axis'. Scott's 'Life Of Silence' 12" on Weatherall's Bird Scarer imprint in our opinion was the best thing committed to vinyl in 2012, and his releases on World Unknown and Astro Lab are straight up killer. Here Scott has put together a two hour live mix which he promises contains lots of exclusives from the bunker personnel. Download via iTunes http://www.itunes.com/podcast?id=591940229

Our second guest podcast comes live and direct from Paris in the form of Laurent Pastor who heads up one of our favourite imprints Astro Lab Recordings. It’s a label with an edge, heavy on electronics and atmosphere which is how we like it. Since its beginnings six years ago its showcased output from Timothy J Fairplay, Sean Johnston, Scott Fraser and Mugwump and this month sees the release of their ‘Treasure Hunting’ compilation featuring unreleased cuts from Toby Tobias, Daniel Avery, DJ KAOS, Raudive and many others. Laurent’s regular Astro Lab radio shows are essential listening so it was only natural we asked him to put together an exclusive mix for us. Enjoy

Making the Big Money

A check arrives in my office and a one-day meeting is scheduled. The business owner arrives on the appointed day. This is going to be tough. It always is. To earn my money, I must take the client through 5 steps that are easy to understand but hard to do. This is the process my staff and I use to grow little companies into big ones. But our magic can't happen until we've extracted these answers from our client. 1. Focus. What are we trying to make happen? How will we measure success? See it clearly. Say it plainly. 2. Evaluate. What is the competitive environment? Do we understand the felt needs of our prospective customer? What is holding us back? Name the limiting factors. 3. Prioritize. When two of our goals come into conflict, which one bows the knee? Prioritize our objectives. 4. Strategize. What would be the shortest route to our primary goal? What levers might we use to dislodge impediments? How might we nullify other limiting factors? Are we willing to modify the business model? This is the moment when the future is won or lost. 5. Implement. Are we willing to pull the trigger? Lets quit talking and DO something. Nothing changes until action is taken. Seventy-five or eighty percent of the time http://mondaymemo.wpengine.com/?ShowMe=Private (we can tell business owners how to get to the next level) and they're happy with us. But about 1 in 5 business owners will fixate on a symptom and refuse to see the root disease. Here's what it can look like: I ask, “What are we trying to make happen?” “Traffic is flat. We need more traffic.” After evaluating the limiting factors, I say, “Your media plan indicates that you're already reaching more than enough people to achieve your goal. You'll have more traffic when you have a stronger message. What new message are you willing to give me?” “Can't we just say more strongly what we've been saying all along?” “No. The limitation isn't the language; it's the message itself. “I don't think we need a new message. We just need to use a different media. Which one do you recommend?” When the client's self-analysis is wrong, they often grow frustrated when I refuse to join them in their delusion. “But Roy I don't think you fully understand our essence. We truly love the customer. We treat them far better than any of our competitors. We greet them at the door with a smile, get them a cup of coffee or a soft drink and then listen attentively as they tell us about their problem. We provide a far superior experience. If only you could capture this and communicate it with a really great ad or through a more effective media, I just know our company would grow.” In the old days, I would accommodate these people by telling them that they weren't on the right track and in my professional opinion their message plan couldn't be made to work, “but if you insist, we'll go ahead and do the best we can.” I no longer do this because I got tired of hearing the report, “Roy, we did exactly what you said and it didn't work.” I'd rather be the jerk who refused to believe in your dream than the jerk whose ads didn't work. There is no benefit in the perfect execution of a bad plan. Occasionally the client doesn't have a marketing problem at all, but is limited by something else entirely. Here's what happened during a recent session of Ocean's 11 – Build Your Business. The client was Scott Fraser, one of my partners in Wizard of Ads, Inc. [Note: Scott paid the same price as every other participant in the class, even though he is a partner and a friend.] Aside from being a talented marketing consultant, Scott owns Milne Court, a gas station/convenience store near Halifax, Nova Scotia. I ask, “What are we trying to make happen?” “I want to increase the sales volume at Milne Court.” We go to step 2 and evaluate the limiting factors. “How many cars drive past the store each day?” “34,500” “How much gas would a successful station sell to that much...
