Priority Bicycles founder Dave Weiner quit his job as a software CEO to pursue a risky idea: building a new kind of bike. In 2014, he started sourcing parts to make his first low-maintenance model, with a rust-proof aluminum frame and a carbon fiber belt drive instead of a chain. Dave was able to keep costs down by selling DTC, but had to scramble to meet demand when his first Kickstarter campaign yielded 1500 orders. From there, Priority pedaled forward steadily, adding new models, and partnering with hotels to provide low-maintenance bikes for guests. Today, after weathering the extreme whiplash of Covid and a debilitating bike accident, Dave is optimistic that Priority will keep growing, with 25 current models and sales of roughly 25,000 bikes a year. This episode was produced by Josh Lash with music by Ramtin Arablouei.Edited by Neva Grant, with research from Carla Esteves .Our engineers were Gilly Moon and Robert Rodriguez. You can follow HIBT on Twitter & Instagram, and email us at hibt@id.wondery.com.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Dave Weiner's quiet power has helped to form hip-hop history as we know it. He has set the pace for independent success from behind-the-scenes. The Los Angeles native turned an entry level job in the mailroom of Priority Records into an explosion of rap music history. As he grew into West Coast Sales Representative, he presented the concept of the distributed label to Priority—signing a label as the company would an artist. The distributed label blueprint was the first of its kind with the 1996 signing of Master P's No Limit Records. From 1997 until 1999, Dave's distribution deals were duplicated and revenue from these partnerships skyrocketed to over 300 million dollars. He went on to head Interscope-distributed JCOR Records and consulted for various labels before becoming Vice President of Strange Music in 2009. There, he and his team led the company to becoming “the most successful independent rap record label in the industry” with multiple RIAA certifications and Top Five debuts on the Billboard Top 200 completely outside of the system. During this time, Tech N9ne released 19 albums that all charted Top 10 on the Billboard Top Albums chart, giving him the title of “most Top 10 albums on the rap chart in history.” Once again, Dave was at the forefront of developing a groundbreaking industry prototype which would soon be known worldwide as Strange Music. This model would be emulated by independent labels globally. Even 31 years into his career, it still feels like the beginning for Dave. “It comes back to hard work and hustle,” he leaves off. “I'm honored to work with artists who remain true to their vision without compromise. That's what inspires me every day.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This podcast episode was originally recorded on Oct 8, 2018. We've cleaned up the audio a bit and hope that you enjoy the episode with Priority Bicycles CMO/co-founder Connor Swegle talking about his journey in building Priority Bicycles. Josh sits down with Priority Bicycles CMO/co-founder Connor Swegle. Priority Bicycles was started to make biking simple and low maintenance with their belt drive bicycles. Connor and his fellow co-founder Dave Weiner have known each other since college, their paths staying relatively parallel, only diverging when their careers took them in different directions. Years went by, life happened, their jobs got super stressful, and they found themselves wanting to switch things up. After they both took the plunge to quit jobs they hated, Dave was absolutely fixated on getting back into the bike industry and that was all the inspiration Connor needed to join him. Together they made it a priority to spread the joy of getting on and riding bikes. But, how do you make something like that possible? After taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture, they realized they just needed to take the work aspect out of biking. With that, they created a low maintenance bike that's great for everyday riders, and set a reasonable price. This entire package hadn't existed yet...so they made it and Priority Bicycles was born.

Dave Weiner was the CEO of an international software company and his technology career had been cranking for over a decade. He was flying all over the country, meeting with clients and he had built the business up to 285 employees. So what he do? He pulled the ripcord on his life as a technology CEO and quit, and he founded a bicycle company. And not just any bicycle company. A commuter bike company. He set out to produce bikes that were comfortable and dependable, that didn’t require a lot of the normal maintenance and rarely got flat tires. Dave wanted to validate his idea and see what the market thought so he turned to Kickstarter. He set a goal of $30,000 and in less than 30 days, he’d raised $550,000. His idea was officially validated and he launched Priority Bicycles. "I wanted to make low maintenance bicycles. I wanted them to be beautiful and I wanted them to be affordable." Now almost 3 years into it, he’s cranking, literally. He’s still a CEO but he’s the CEO of Priority Bicycles based in New York City. In this episode we discuss… Him feeling unfulfilled as his technology company grew and being further away from his customers. Always being the ‘bike guy’ and the person that his friends turned to when they had questions about bicycles. Filling a need for Joe Consumer wanting to ride their bike to work and get there on time. Going global to find the right manufacturer and providing bicycles at the right price point. Turning to Kickstarter and raising $550,000 in 30 days. Scaling Priority Bicycles while selling direct to the consumer. "If you are not fulfilled in what you do in your day job, how can you feel fulfilled when you get home?" How to get on Forbes’s Cash Kings list, according to Dave Weiner

Dave Weiner is a bit of a paradox in the music business. He comes off as a blue-collar type: unpretentious, straightforward, and honest — all foreign concepts to most of his peers. He runs his business frugally and with an attention to detail that stands in stark contrast to the fanciful way most record companies operate. Instead of just looking for artists with talent, Dave has made his career by finding talent who also know how to do business, often finding regional players who looked like they had what it takes to go nationwide. This distinction has made him integral to building some of hip hop’s biggest powerhouses. First, he discovered Master P and helped him turn No Limit Records into a $200 million-a-year force that seemed unstoppable. Years later, he would join Tech N9ne and help him build his label, Strange Music, into an under-the-radar enterprise that put its founder on the Forbes Magazine Cash Kings list. He’s also been screwed over by “the business” more than most artists — threatened, double-crossed, and overridden. In our interview, he’ll teach us how to bounce back, as well as how to build relationships based on trust and straight talk. On being direct: It’s very hard to look an artist in the eye and say I know you want a $10,000 video to get all the bells and whistles but we’re going to have to cut those bells and whistles. Hopefully you are going to be able to understand it when you get your statement because we sit down and they are able to look at every nickel and dime and how it was spent and that’s when they go, “Man I remember when we were in New York and you said let’s not get that limo, let’s just walk.” All those little things just add up when they’re looking at their statement. That’s when they appreciate it. On having a strong moral compass: For me to do my job I need a boss that has the same goals. We have to see eye to eye because I won’t follow directions if it’s not the right thing to do. Dave Weiner is the Founder of Priority Bicycles. After spending many years in the bicycle industry, Dave moved from California to New York City to pursue a career in the software business. As the CEO of a multinational software company, Dave spent the next ten years of his life working with brands to grow their business by harnessing new technologies.   Having grown up in the bicycle industry and living in bicycle-friendly New York City, Dave was constantly asked for bike advice from his friends. Whether their bikes were out-of-tune, they ruined their pants from a greasy chain, or they couldn't afford a quality product, they seemed fed up.   Dave quickly noticed a trend - all of his friends were looking for a bike that was visually appealing but not overly technical, lightweight, comfortable, easy to ride, easy to maintain, hard to steal, and affordable. These ended up being Daves seven principles of quality, and he has used this as the foundation for crafting Prioritys bicycles.
