Real Life Devon went full medieval this week with a trip to a Renaissance Fair—this one featuring permanent structures that actually looked “authentic” instead of slapped together by ye olde hot glue. There were swinging rides, wooden horses, and some legit jousting. Unfortunately, the real fantasy was thinking the kids would have fun. Big downer energy. Steven is gearing up for an Arizona trip but had to make a sudden detour into Best Buy territory after his TV gave up the ghost. On the plus side, Andor continues to be amazing and makes up for any consumer electronics woes. (It really is still that good.) Ben has seen Labyrinth (have you?), and he's here for the dream logic and David Bowie's entire vibe. Also thrown into the cinematic blender: The Island and Cliffhanger. We're now seeking out more films where geological or man-made features are basically the co-stars. Let us know if you have one. Oh, and Ben also saw the Slate all-electric pickup truck, which looked like something out of Black Mirror. Meanwhile, TVs just… work now? What a time to be alive. Future or Now Time for some spicy Star Wars takes. We got into it over which trilogy was better: the Prequels or the Sequels. Episode IX (The Rise of Skywalker) got roasted—Devon called it "the worst." Ben leaned sequel-side, arguing they're better than the prequels overall. The breakdown went something like: Prequels: bad films, good plots Sequels: good films, bad plots There were also complaints about Starkiller Base, which feels like someone said “What if Death Star, but more?” But then there's Andor, which everyone agrees is just pure excellence. So Star Wars can still be good when they let writers write. Our rankings for maximum judgment: Devon's list: The Phantom Menace, The Force Awakens, Rise of Skywalker, Attack of the Clones, The Last Jedi, Revenge of the Sith Ben's list: Rise of Skywalker, The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi Your move, Internet.
The stage was set in Palmo and it's time for the trap to be sprung. Ghorman's sacrifice is one of heartbreak for the galaxy because little did the citizenry know it never had a chance. One thing is left unexplained: just how did the Empire find out this kalkite was there and how did they know it was needed for the Death Star? This is the Way Podcast HQ is working hard to get these recap and discussion podcasts out before next week's episodes air. Once those hit the internet, there's no turning back. Andor's story will be complete. Is that sad? It's a great show, but there will be no season three, no matter how high the ratings climb. If you have an episode specific comment, send it in to the email address we reveal in our podcasts. In this video, Liam and Sanak predict the final arc of Andor Season 2, set in 1 BBY and leading directly into the events of Rogue One. In it, they discuss how much sway Rogue One will have in the conclusion of the Andor story, how Cassian will work through his final years with K-2SO re-programmed by his side but Bix gone, how Dedra may get further involved with the Death Star work alongside Krennic but could die by the hand of Luthen (and vice-versa), what the role of Mon Mothma and Bail Organa looks like after her escape, if characters with Rogue One backstory like Galen Erso and Bodhi Rook will appear, and if Saw Gerrera gets to have the most plot-heavy and centered storytelling in this final arc of the show.
Buckle up, rebels. In this fiery episode of Watchin It, Donnell and Robert dive into Andor Season 2's latest three-part arc: “Ever Been to Gorman?”, “I Have Friends Everywhere,” and “What a Festive Evening.” The hosts go full throttle through political intrigue, volatile fuel thefts, and rebel drama—with a hearty dose of sarcasm and sharp analysis. From Bix's mental spiral to Luthen's icy pragmatism, the guys break down every secret meeting, protocol breach, and spy-tastic twist. Is Cyril just a glorified mall cop with daddy issues? Did Mon Mothma just throw a party while the Empire burns planets? And what's up with that giant polar bear alien in the rebellion?Oh—and yes, the Death Star still looms. But this week, it's all about the power plays that lead up to the Rebellion's big moment.Connect with us:
#starwars #StarWarsLore #GalacticEmpireHave you ever wondered, "How in the heck did the Empire manage to survive after the Battle of Endor???" Have you ever asked how it was that good people could get so easily roped into doing terrible things, like working for a government that would call a space station the "Death Star" or "StarKILLER"?It's absolutely crazy to think how a despotic, tyrannical military force could survive a thirty year stint and still come back stronger and yet somehow dumber than ever. Today, we're heading to a galaxy far, far away to explore the origins of Star Wars and its earliest ventures into video games, starting with the iconic Star Wars Arcade game from 1983. We begin by tracing George Lucas's long road to bringing his space opera to life, from rejected drafts and studio rejections to the scrappy production that nearly didn't make it to theaters. Then, we dive into the history of the first Star Wars games, including Parker Brothers' early Atari 2600 titles and the legendary arcade cabinet that let fans relive the Death Star trench run. Finally, we reflect on how these games captured imaginations and laid the foundation for four decades of Star Wars gaming. So, buckle in and fire up your X-Wing as we blast off on today's trip down Memory Card Lane! Find out more at https://a-trip-down-memory-card-lane.pinecast.co
Dana and Tom with 5x club member, Shane Rogers (Comedian and Host of Midnight Facts for Insomniacs) and Jesse Sertle (fellow group member of CineMadison) discuss the movie that created the biggest film franchise of all-time, Star Wars (1977): written and directed by George Lucas, cinematography by Gilbert Taylor, music by John Williams, starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Alec Guinness, and James Earl Jones.Plot Summary: Star Wars is set in a galaxy far, far away under the oppressive rule of the Galactic Empire. The story follows a young farm boy, Luke Skywalker, who discovers his destiny when he comes across a pair of droids carrying secret plans for the Empire's ultimate weapon, the Death Star. With the guidance of Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi as well as the help of a roguish pilot, Han Solo, his co-pilot Chewbacca, and the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO, Luke embarks on a daring mission to rescue Princess Leia from the clutches of Darth Vader and to aid the Rebel Alliance in their fight for freedom. You may be familiar with how Rogue One ends. But do you know how ANDOR began? The critically acclaimed Star Wars series almost didn't happen. The goal of ANDOR was to detail Cassian Andor's journey from a child of war to a self-focused mercenary to a selfless hero of the early rebellion. And like the rebels taking down the Death Star, the story behind bringing this one-in-a-million drama to the small screen is just as wild, and just as compelling. Join host David Quinn as he explores the making of the monumental first season, and how showrunner Tony Gilroy transformed it into one of the greatest Star Wars stories ever told. This is, in the words of Gilroy, “always protein, never icing.” And this is Star Wars: Prototypes and Production! *This episode focuses on the events leading up to the series' release in 2022, and does not contain any spoilers from seasons one and two. We're on a one way mission to steal the Death Star plans in 2016's Rogue One. "Hope" you like it!
Watch on Philo! - Philo.tv/DTHWe meet a little girl named Jyn. Her family is in hiding. One day, the bad guy Orson shows up to tell Jyn's dad, Galen, that they need him to come back and finish the Death Star. Galen's like, “I wouldn't be any use—I'm just a sad sack ever since my wife died.” Suddenly, his wife comes running out of the field—so really bad timing, honestly. She has a gun and she's like, “You'll never take him!” Orson's like, “I'm taking you all.” She shoots him. They shoot her. Orson tells his guys to go find the child, but Jyn is really good at hide-and-seek. She waits in the secret spot until a dude named Saw shows up. It's clear they know each other.Fast forward some time—Jyn is now an adult and in a holding cell. Meanwhile, a cargo pilot named Bodhi shows up and claims to Saw that he wants to join the Rebels.Jyn is being transferred with other prisoners when Rebel forces suddenly break in and free them, led by Cassian Andor. Together, they fight stormtroopers and escape. They take a reprogrammed Imperial droid named K-2SO and head somewhere else, where they encounter more stormtroopers who are gathering crystals to power the Death Star. They're about to get captured, but a blind spiritual warrior named Chirrut Îmwe and his mercenary friend Baze Malbus help them out. This allows Jyn to make contact with Saw, who is holding Bodhi. She sees a message in which Galen reveals that he secretly built a vulnerability into the Death Star. The schematics are stored in an Imperial data vault.Onboard the Death Star, Orson orders a test strike on the moon where the gang is. Jyn and her group take Bodhi and flee, but Saw stays behind and dies.Orson gets an atta boy from his higher-up.Bodhi leads the group to Galen's Imperial research facility. Rebel bombers attack the site. Galen is wounded and dies in Jyn's arms before she escapes with the group on a stolen Imperial cargo shuttle.Orson is summoned by Darth Vader—he's back, baby!—to explain the attack. Orson's like, “Now that you've seen my work, maybe introduce me to the Emperor?” Vader force-chokes him and says, “Get back to work and don't cause any more trouble.”Jyn proposes a mission to steal the Death Star schematics, but the Alliance Council thinks there's no chance of success. Frustrated by their inaction, Jyn's group leads a small squad of volunteers—Bodhi dubs them “Rogue One.” Jyn, Cassian, and K-2SO infiltrate the Imperial base while the others create a diversion with a space battle. The Alliance eventually joins the fight, sending their fleet. Jyn gets the schematics but is ambushed by Orson, who is shot and wounded by Cassian. Jyn transmits the schematics to the Rebel command ship just before the Death Star fires a beam that destroys the base—and them. The Rebel fleet tries to escape, but many ships are intercepted by Darth Vader. He boards the command ship and wrecks everyone in an attempt to recover the plans, but a smaller ship escapes with them. Princess Leia declares that the schematics will provide hope for the Rebellion—some might even call it a new hope.

Send us a textThis week's episode is a personal one. Den shares the incredible story of Bruce Logan ASC - the man behind the Death Star explosion in Star Wars — and the humbling lessons he learned from working with him.But it's not just about nostalgia. Den also pulls no punches about the real state of the video industry in 2025: budget cuts, slower sales cycles, and why many creative businesses are quietly collapsing without realizing it.You'll learn why "good enough" might actually save your business this year... and why community, mentorship, and adaptability are more critical than ever.If you're serious about building a sustainable creative business — especially in a tougher market — this episode is unmissable.

“Now witness the power of this fully armed and operational battlestation!”Emperor Palpatine, shortly before nothing goes wrong for him whatsoever.Say it with us, “that's no moon…that's a space station.” One of the most quotable lines in the Star Wars saga actually tells you quite a bit about the central threat of the original film (now officially known as Episode IV: A New Hope but to anyone who grew up in the ‘80s or ‘90s, it will forever be known simply as Star Wars). The Death Star, the Empire's ultimate planet-destroying superweapon is the size of a small moon (or a large asteroid, as we'll get to in the episode) but is actually a mobile space station that can house and deploy thousands of troops, hundreds of small ships, and packs enough firepower to turn your home planet into multiple orders of space McNuggets. You'd probably assume that something like the Death Star would be completely out of the realm of scientific plausibility. And you might also make assumptions about the story logic or the vibes of the Death Star, especially since the entire Star Wars franchise essentially lives or dies by its vibes. Unlike, say, Star Trek (please don't make assumptions that we are biased simply because this is a Roddenberry production), which tries to lean heavily on the “science” part of science fiction, the Star Wars brand of sci-fi has always had a healthy dose of fantasy. Fortunately, we have Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi and Tamara Krinsky to explain how it all works for you…and also how much it might cost to actually build one of these things. We took a look at the entire history of the Death Star, from what we see in Episode IV, Return of the Jedi, the “Starkiller Base” evolution in The Force Awakens, and even the gritty military realism of Andor and Rogue One to find our answers, which might just surprise you.Don't believe us? (“That…is why you fail!”) Well, padawans, watch the latest episode of Does it Fly? right here and you might just be surprised at what we found!Watch the video version here:https://youtu.be/aE4vkGo-QfkSUGGESTED VIEWING Everything you really need to know about the Death Star (but were afraid to ask) is pretty much contained in Episode IV: A New Hope (we're still calling it Star Wars), Return of the Jedi, and the truly great Rogue One. But it's worth checking out The Force Awakens to see how the Death Star evolved into Starkiller Base. And while Rogue One prequel, Andor on Disney Plus has yet to tap into Death Star mythology…you really, really, really need to be watching that show. But Tamara also recommends the original The Making of Star Wars documentary which has some wonderful looks at how the movie magic of the Death Star was pulled off. Track it down!Tamara also points out a couple of classic war movies that were key inspirations for George Lucas for the assault on the Death Star: 1955's The Dam Busters and 1964's 633 Squadron.FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do!MimasNo, not orange juice and prosecco! Saturn's seventh largest moon does look suspiciously like the Death Star, doesn't it? It's also about 1/10th the size of The Moon, which makes it much closer in actual size to the Death Star.Asteroid PsycheGiven the absurd cost it would take to actually build a Death Star, we're going to need to raise some capital. Fortunately, there's an asteroid in our solar system that may be composed entirely of materials “worth more than the entire world economy.”Dyson SpheresIn case you're wondering what it would take to power something like a Death Star, let's start with a Dyson Sphere, which could potentially channel the power of an entire sun. Hey, if you're looking to blow up a planet, do it right. Do they exist? Maybe! It Costs HOW Much?Never mind the price of steel and other building materials, get a load of how much firing a weapons grade laser costs. Now imagine that multiplied by how much it would take to destroy a planet! How Star Wars Almost Didn't Happen“I believe it was said at the time that no science fiction picture grossed more than $10 million dollars, and no picture with War in the title ever grossed more than six or seven million. So the idea of a sci-fi film with War in the title was a pretty deadly combination.”The article that Tamara quotes from can be found in full here, and it's full of fascinating info!Operation Plumbbob We can't explain it any better than the Atomic Heritage Foundation: “Operation Plumbbob was a series of 29 nuclear tests conducted by the U.S. military between May 28 and October 7, 1957, at the Nevada Test Site. It was one of the longest and most comprehensive test series in the continental United States, and became controversial after much of the operation was declassified. There were several objectives during Operation Plumbbob, including improving tactical weapon design, conducting bio-medical experiments, safety testing, and component and design testing for thermonuclear systems to be detonated in future operations.”They've got some pretty amazing videos of this as well.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?We've tackled Star Wars concepts before, so check out our episode on lightsabers right here! The new season of HBO's The Last of Us is currently giving everyone nightmares, so we told you why you maybe (?) shouldn't worry too much…for now.FOLLOW US!Stay in the loop! This week on Shat The Movies, Gene and Big D close out the original Star Wars trilogy with a deep dive into Return of the Jedi (1983). Fueled by nostalgia, Minute Maid and vodka cocktails, and the crushing realization that not all endings stick the landing, the hosts explore the Ewok invasion, Jabba's deadly circus act, Boba Fett's humiliating demise, and the absurdity of Imperial helmet design. From Luke's questionable Force skills to the Empire's laughable "elite troops," nothing escapes the Shat boys' critical eye. Along the way, they celebrate Carrie Fisher's iconic (if problematic) gold bikini moment, mourn for Ewoks lost in battle, and dream up a darker, deadlier version of Endor warfare. Was this the fitting finale Star Wars deserved—or an early warning of Lucas' merchandising empire run amok? Tune in to find out! Plot SummaryA year after Han Solo's capture, Luke Skywalker launches a risky mission to free his friend from the clutches of Jabba the Hutt. After a daring escape involving Sarlacc pits, lightsabers and a lot of questionable strategy, the Rebel Alliance turns its attention to the Empire's new and even deadlier Death Star. Luke confronts Darth Vader once more, hoping to save his father from the Emperor's grip, while Han, Leia, and a band of unlikely Ewok allies attempt to destroy the shield generator on Endor. The fate of the galaxy hinges on battles fought in the forest and the throne room—where redemption, betrayal, and tiny bear-like warriors collide. Today's Talmud pages, Sanhedrin 110 and 111, kick off a discussion of an idolatrous city and whether or not it should be destroyed. Jordan Gorfinkel has thought about this question a lot, particularly as one of the leading creative forces behind Batman, whose native Gotham is an idolatrous city if there ever was one. Should Gotham be destroyed? Were there innocent people on the Death Star? And what can this Talmudic conversation teach us about, say, Gaza? Listen and find out.
Rohan Grey, Assistant Professor of Law at Willamette University, joins Money on the Left to discuss his urgent new paper, "Digitizing the Fisc." During our conversation, we recount the events surrounding Elon Musk & the DOGE boys' unconstitutional takeover of the Treasury's Bureau of Fiscal Service, while explicating the right-wing theory of the "unitary executive" that underwrites such actions. Next, we analyze the structural deficiencies and choke points in the current Congressional appropriation process that have made DOGE's illegal interventions possible. Turns out, the US fiscal process involves several readily exploitable weaknesses, making it somewhat akin to the almighty Death Star's unprotected thermal exhaust port in Star Wars (1997). Finally, we consider Grey's proposal for a more streamlined, distributed, and democratic digital architecture for coordinating federal expenditures. Building legal concepts and procedures into the very materiality of digital design, this alternative system not only secures Congress's constitutional spending power against authoritarian interference and impoundment. It also unbundles fiscal policy from public debt management, making clear to the world that legislative action does not redistribute extant funds, but rather creates money afresh every time Congress votes to spend. This month's show really is going down the toilet! That is to say, the downstairs loo of our special guest Matt Skywalker-Jones, which he's turned into a bijou display room. Matt tells all to Andy P, and talks about his collecting journey, and his many vintage passions. Elsewhere, the lads ponder Star Tourism, tell all about their latest finds, and battle it out in the Action Playset Face-Off, which sees a Death Star and an Ewok Village up against not one but two Cantina playsets. Jason hosts this month's quiz, and in New Acquisition shout-outs, we hear about 12-back display shippers, Japanese pencil cases, Peruvian board games, Helix and Letraset shenanigans on eBay, and an HCF pencil pot. A packed Rebel Briefings section sees chat about latest happenings in the collecting universe, as we catch up with a new blog on early Kenner displays, hear about the latest charitable offering from the Pennsylvania Star Wars Collecting Society, recall Thomas Troy's Troop Transporter, take a look at a Palitoy book, a signed Survival Kit and a great Greek gun, before looking ahead to Echo Live and Celebration Japan. Licensee this month is Burger King, as the team sink their teeth into a whopper of a promotion across all three original trilogy movies. Plenty of bluff, bluster and banter besides, look for the podcast in all the usual places.

If someone asked you who the artist was that originally conceived the iconic look of Star Wars vehicles like the TIE Fighter, The X-Wing, and The Death Star, you might think of famous names like Ralph McQuarrie and Joe Johnston. But before those legends were enlisted to work on STAR WARS, George Lucas first worked with Colin Cantwell. Colin's partner Sierra Dall joins us “In the Cantina” to discuss Colin's life, his artwork and she sets the record straight about his contributions to STAR WARS. We check out interview highlights featuring Tony Gilroy and some of the cast of ANDOR as they discuss the upcoming second season. Plus, listener feedback sends us down-the-rabbit-hole as we try to define what a “Bokken Jedi” really is. *Cue the John Williams music, let's do this one last time as we come to the end of Star Wars season! It's been a wonderful few weeks but it's time to ask the toughest question of all... Has Disney damaged something that was once the most beautifully pure creative IP and taken the heart out of it. With this in mind we try to cut to the heart of what the Star Wars films are all about? What is the light side and is it really that different from the dark side - or are there just shades of grey. In this episode of Star Warsologies, we talk to Karen Yu about lasers! PEW PEW! This episode, we dive into lasers in Star Wars but it turns out that many of the examples are likely actually something else entirely - plasma! Though lightsabers are sometimes called laser swords, Karen breaks down the reasons that light / lasers simply wouldn't work this way. Same goes for the Death Star's mighty weapon. Somehow we also end up talking about repulsor vehicles, invisible tires, and a lot of other physics and engineering quandaries. Enjoy! Show Links: Want to know more about transparent chicken? JUPITER, Fla. -- There is a sense around the Cardinals that one of the reasons for reducing expectations, seesawing between the words "reset" and "transition" but never once using the world "rebuild," is that the club is trying to create a valve to release some of the pressure that greats young players when they arrive in the greenhouse of October demands. It's as if the Cardinals front office is trying to take the team out of the Jiffy-Pop tin of its usual brand and try something new, trying to see what grows when that greenhouse is a little cooler. Former Cardinals pitcher, current Cardinals broadcaster, and winner of the 2025 St. Louis Baseball Writers' of America Chapter's 'Good Guy Award,' Ricky Horton joins the Best Podcast in Baseball to discuss that release of pressure and what it means for the Cardinals. Horton, who appears on the KMOX/1120 AM and Cardinals Radio Network broadcasts, discusses with BPIB host Derrick Goold what he'll be watching as spring games begin. The two also talk about what lens to use when evaluating the Cardinals given the youth movement, and finally they explore whether the Dodgers' spending and acquisition of talent is creating a juggernaut unlike any baseball has seen. The Dodgers are likened to the Death Star. There is a stretch of the podcast where the most cynical of Cardinals fans might need earmuffs as Horton and Goold discuss whether a trade not made this winter means a red jacket that must be made in the future. And Horton describes how Whitey Herzog approached pressure and whether there is a lesson from the 1985 Cardinals for the 2025 Cardinals on the power of adopting a style of baseball. The Best Podcast in Baseball, sponsored by Closets by Design of St. Louis, is brought to listeners weekly in its 13th season. The podcast is a production of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, StlToday.com, and Derrick Goold.

It's one of the oldest riddles (or puzzles (apparently it's a puzzle, there's a lot of disbelief and arguments at this)) ever told! You are on one side of the river with a goose, a fox and a bag of beans and you have to get to the other side by a boat carrying one at a time. However, if you leave the fox with the goose that fox will straight up devour that goose and if you leave the goose with the beans that goose will straight up devour those beans. The fox and beans are chill tho. Now there is a solution (or two, that's why it's a puzzle and not a riddle and everyone is mad) but we here at Plumbing the Death Star think a) the solution is not in the spirit of the puzzle, b) it's not efficient and c) reckon we can do better. We go through a lot of broken goose necks to arrive at our answer, discuss at length the problems with of a pig heated house and try to work out an amicable solution with Erik the goose buyer. This riddle wasn't even hard, this was smart and we are in fact geniuses.Links to everything at https://linktr.ee/plumbingthedeathstar including our terrible merch, social media garbage and where to become a subscriber to Bad Brain Boys+ Hosted on Acast.
