Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.02.15.528738v1?rss=1 Authors: Krausz, T. A., Comrie, A. E., Frank, L. M., Daw, N. D., Berke, J. D. Abstract: Dopamine in the nucleus accumbens helps motivate behavior based on expectations of future reward ("values"). These values need to be updated by experience: after receiving reward, the choices that led to reward should be assigned greater value. There are multiple theoretical proposals for how this credit assignment could be achieved, but the specific algorithms that generate updated dopamine signals remain uncertain. We monitored accumbens dopamine as freely behaving rats foraged for rewards in a complex, changing environment. We observed brief pulses of dopamine both when rats received reward (scaling with prediction error), and when they encountered novel path opportunities. Furthermore, dopamine ramped up as rats ran towards reward ports, in proportion to the value at each location. By examining the evolution of these dopamine place-value signals, we found evidence for two distinct update processes: progressive propagation along taken paths, as in temporal-difference learning, and inference of value throughout the maze, using internal models. Our results demonstrate that within rich, naturalistic environments dopamine conveys place values that are updated via multiple, complementary learning algorithms. MCALLEN, Texas - One of the top education events of the year in the Rio Grande Valley occurred in October when South Texas College secured accreditation for its dual credit programs by the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships.STC is the first college in Texas to earn the prestigious award.Dr. Rebecca De Leon, STC's dean for dual credit programs and school district partnerships, said the accreditation proves STC is providing the highest level of instruction that can be offered for dual students. The actual accreditation from NACEP came in May 2020 but the award could not be made due to the coronavirus pandemic. In an exclusive interview with the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service, Dr. De Leon pointed out that STC had to follow a rigorous two-year process of adhering to NACEP's concurrent enrollment standards. She said STC had to ensure that:• College courses offered in the high school are of the same quality and rigor as the courses offered on-campus at the sponsoring college or university.• Students enrolled in concurrent enrollment courses are held to the same standards of achievement as students in on-campus courses.• Instructors teaching college courses through the concurrent enrollment program meet the academic requirements for faculty and instructors teaching in the sponsoring postsecondary institution and are trained in course delivery and provided ongoing discipline-specific professional development.• Concurrent enrollment programs display greater accountability through program evaluation.“That's what this NACEP accreditation is. It's a testament that South Texas College's Dual Credit Programs is to the highest quality and the highest level that a college-level course should be held at a high school site,” De Leon said. “It's a testament to our students, parents and community so they know that the courses their students are able to take at their high school sites through STC is an opportunity for these students to get ahead and start on the right path towards their college degree.”  Dr. De Leon pointed out that NACEP is the sole national accrediting body for concurrent enrollment partnerships.

EDINBURG, Texas - Dr. Narciso Garcia, superintendent at Vanguard Academy, is pleased with the progress his charter school system has made in preparing students for collage, career and the military.Collage, career and military readiness (CCMR) is part of the accountability process expected of school systems under House Bill 3.In a recent podcast with the Rio Grande Guardian, Dr. Garcia pointed out that just a few short years ago Vanguard lagged behind neighboring school districts in this regard. But now, based upon data from the Texas Education Agency, Vanguard is often outperforming other school districts. “We wanted to make sure that our CCMR grew because it is part of our accountability to the state,” Garcia said. “We are very excited because CCMR has positively impacted a lot of families.”The data shows, pro rata, that Vanguard is top of the list or near the top for the Texas Success Initiative, Advanced Placement, Dual Credit, Industry Based Certification and Associate Degrees. “Making sure that our students are connected to college, to a career, to the military, are important. But most of all we want to them ready to succeed in life and succeed in helping the community,” Garcia said.“Four years ago when I arrived here, in 2017, we had zero percent of students graduating with industry-based certifications,” Garcia said “Fast forward to four years later and we have 55 percent of our students graduating with CCMR certifications, either in level one or level two.”Garcia pointed out that level two is more rigorous. “We have 11 percent of our students graduating with a level two certificate,” Garcia said proudly. “These certificates prepare students for the workforce.”The attached podcast has the full interview with Dr. Garcia.
