On a special bonus episode of the Brewbound Podcast, we talk a lot about lagers and marketing. First, Jack Hendler and Joe Connolly discuss their book – Modern Lager Beer: Techniques, Processes and Recipes – and producers' growing interest in craft lagers. Hendler is one of the co-founders of Jack's Abby, a Massachusetts-based lager brewery, and Connelly is the brewery's sales director. Then, Von Ebert Brewing's Sam Pecoraro dishes on the Portland, Oregon brewery's increased focus on lager, takeover of the former Ecliptic Brewing space and its five taproom locations. The show wraps with an interview with Not Your Hobby Marketing Solutions' Julie Rhodes talking shop on marketing, including the importance of personal connections and native digital marketing campaigns.
On this episode, we kick things off with well wishes to our great friends at Ecliptic Brewing, who served up the last pints at their brewpub in November. We continue discussion with a review of team Eclipse on Tap's end-of-season mountain bike race, Iceman. In the second half, we pay our respects to the late Apollo-era legends, Frank Borman & Ken Mattingly. We wrap with updates on the paper-mache alien saga that is still somehow making headlines. We caught up with Zwickle Ric at his new post at Threshold Brewing. He turns us on to the new Harvest Haiku to bring home and muses about his chosen industry. Damian is concerned for Ecliptic Brewing, John wins a bet, Ryan wants you to stay healthy, and Bronwyn has a laugh or two. Plenty of news and seasonal styles on this episode of Brew Happy!
This new hop sounds fishy...With our recent love of tinned seafood we were pretty stoked to hear about Anchovy hops, and even more stoked to hear they don't taste like anchovies. We'll have to find a beer with these soon.Y'all remember a couple of years ago when someone stole two truckloads of beer from Sweetwater Brewery? Well, some folks in Memphis beat that by stealing "17 or 18 truckloads" of Twisted Tea. What in the world will you do with that much Tea? I can't wait to hear how this shakes out.Spice up your boring beerI'm not sure this is exactly new, but the internet says to upgrade your cheap beer to put a few dashes of hot sauce in it. Some places really go all out with that like a Loaded Tecate or the Dressed Hamm's. I decide to try it with a Three Taverns Beeps and gotta say, pretty good.On the note of spicy beers... remember when chile pepper beers were cool? Habnero Sculpin, Stone's horrendous Crime and Punishment. We loved No Label's Don Jalapeno. Another one last to the sand of time, mostly.More brewery closures coming at us and another big one this week with the announcement that Ecliptic Brewing would close their pub and restaurant. However, the brand's beer will still be available.Happy Thanksgiving! We're talking off this week to stuff our fat faces with turkey. We hope you'll do the same. If it's gonna be dark at 5:00 I'm gonna need more stouts.Oh. My. God. I hate this time of year. Set the clocks back an hour and I'm off schedule for two weeks. I don't sleep right, day is night, up is down. What is even happening here?Fortunately last weekend was nice so we hit some patios, drank some good beers, ate some oysters, and visited our local barcade. Good times that we'll take advantage of while we can.The brewery closures keep coming. The Brewers Association says craft beer is now a "mature market," listen in for more on that. We saw Hippin' Hops close a location here in Atlanta, big news out of Austin as Oskar Blue's shutters, and after we went to press news came out that Ecliptic Brewing has been sold and while the brand will live on, the pub and restaurant will close. We'll see more of that, no doubt. As it is the season and we are all for playing along, we discuss pumpkin beers this week. I even drink one. Madness. Pumpkin beers aren't my thing but NoDa was nice enough to share some of their medal-winning Gordgeous so I gave it a shot. It's pretty good, opens up at cellar temps IMO. I may not go for pumpkin beer often but we've all got opinions on what we want IF we do happen to have one. While beer fests are down in popularity the Festival of Wood and Barrel-Aged Beer (FoBAB) in Chicago is still a hot one. There are lots of ways the business of beer extends far beyond what we find in bottles or cans. The social and cultural side of beer offers a glimpse into who we are, what we value, and in some ways, what drives us. Among one of the more curious trends in the American industry in recent years has been the continued use of trademarked or registered intellectual property. All over the country, there are near-daily examples of small and independent craft breweries using the likeness of people or IP from music, TV, movies, and a host of other pop culture venues as a way to market their product. As previously covered on GBH, these actions are done with knowledge of the potential legal ramifications. Some breweries are careful to toe the line, using similar color schemes or fonts from companies or products, but others may cross it. A recent example also covered on GBH was when Pennsylvania brewery Broken Goblet released a label for The Bryce is Right, a beer celebrating the arrival of baseball superstar Bryce Harper in Philadelphia. With a profile of Harper’s face, as well as a label imitating the beloved gameshow, The Price is Right, the proposed branding could have put the brewery in hot water. It even received a shoutout from Bob Pease, Brewers Association president and CEO, on Twitter. When that story ran in March, Pease never explained why he specifically called out a member brewery that could so easily be in violation of state and federal law, declining to comment to GBH. Ahead of this podcast, through the Brewers Association’s PR agency, GBH was told, “No foul play here (pun intended). As a fan of independent beer and baseball, Bob was simply trying to connect the two.” One person, however, is still hoping for a more thorough answer. For about a month, Tim Sullivan has been tweeting at Pease, creating an ever-growing thread on Twitter with hope he can learn more about the social media shoutout. Sullivan, a brewer at Portland, Oregon’s Ecliptic Brewing, has been hopeful, but not holding his breath. In this Sightlines podcast episode, we’re checking in with Sullivan. He’s a supporter of the Brewers Association—his employer is a member as well—though he continues to be perplexed why nobody from the trade organization has spoken up to ask peer businesses to stop using the intellectual property of others. After a series of tweets went unanswered, Sullivan explains why this is important to him. This is Tim Sullivan, brewer and searcher of answers. Listen in.

REGISTER FOR OUR NEXT RUN HERE! Today on the podcast, we're getting to know John Harris, owner, and Brewmaster at Ecliptic Brewing. John is an icon in the world of craft beer, and while he might not use that word himself, the beer he is known for certainly fits that definition. After spending nearly 30 years working for some of Oregon's most iconic breweries, in 2012, he took a leap and started a brewery of his own. In today's episode, we talk with John about the very first beer he ever brewed, (an English Ale), and walk through his brewing journey from McMenamins, to Deschutes, to Full Sail, and now, starting his very own brewery, Ecliptic. He'll also share a bit about what makes Ecliptic Brewing innovative, tasty, and oriented around community, so keep listening!
Join lo-key as we get hoppy and talk Ipas with Ecliptic brewing. Also we talk about portland and its beer scene.

Welcome back to another installment of the Oregon Brewery Running Series Podcast. Inspiring Oregonians to Get Active, Have Fun, and Give Back. We host family-friendly, 5K fun runs that start and end at some of Oregon's best breweries. Today's show is a rerun of an interview I did back in April of 2017. You may not know this, but before we started the podcast, I was interviewing people live on Facebook, and then posting that video to our YouTube channel. It was a little clunky, and not super easy to listen to. And from a production and interviewer perspective, well, let's just say we've learned a lot. Anyway, I'm resharing my interview with the legendary brewery, John Harris. You may not know who that is, but you probably know his beer. John is a hero in the beer world, and after spending almost 30 years working for some of the most prolific breweries in Oregon, he decided to start his own brewery, one of our favorites, Ecliptic Brewing. A quick summary of his background, John began as a brewer at McMenamins', then moved to Deschutes in Bend, where he created the recipes for Mirror Pond, Black Butte Porter, and Obsidian Stout to name a few. In 1992, he was the brewmaster at Full Sail where he was in charge of creating the Brewmaster Reserve line of beers. After three decades of brewing for other people, he decided to take on the ambitious challenge of opening his own brewery and restaurant. Ecliptic Brewing began in October of 2013, just off Cook and Mississippi Ave in a booming area of North Portland. They have quickly become one of the hottest breweries, winning a lot of awards for their beer, including being named the fifth top brewery in the country for 2017. Talking to a Legend When I sat down to talk with John, I have to admit I was a little intimidated. Here's a guy who created some of the most iconic beers in Oregon, and influential in the success of multiple breweries. I rarely get starstruck, but I guess I sorta was, as you'll see, from my rambling question asking. We get to sample three of John's Ecliptic beers, and hear some of the backstory about what went into making them. John was nothing but kind, and incredibly gracious with a few of my oddball, newbie beer questions and attempts at humor. A big thank you to John Harris for taking time away from his crazy schedule to chat with me. When we talked, Ecliptic had just installed a canning machine, and it wasn't going well Not sure if you noticed John's comment, but I know it was causing him headaches, yet he still found time to chat. That's a solid guy. And thank you for listening to the Oregon Brewery Running Series Podcast! Part of the reason I'm sharing this again now is that we just found out Ecliptic is on board for one of our runs in 2018 and we're incredibly excited! If you want early access to that event, register here and get $5 off for a limited time.
In our latest podcast episode we share our interview with the legendary Ecliptic Brewing owner John Harris. Check out the story behind the special brew, why he chose the name Ecliptic and how he almost got fired on his first day as a brewer.
Hello Moon Gazers! In honor of the Eclipse this week, we decided to try “Space Ghost”, which is a collaboration of two very cosmic brewing companies, Ecliptic and Melvin Brewing. The two astronauts from different spaceships cheersing on the bottle is representative of the collaboration between Ecliptic and Melvin. This ‘out of this world’ beer has an orange pour and a notable mango, cantaloupe aroma. Flavor notes include tangerine and papaya juice, followed by a hint of lemongrass and lime. This brew is officially considered a Barleywine, but we are placing it in the Double IPA realm because of its very distinct hoppy finish. In this episode, we dive into what it would be like to discover a new COLOR, Ryan’s weird dream about an ATM machine in a different dimension, and advice on how to get your boyfriend’s “best friend” to stop coming over when the boyfriend isn’t home.
