Singer, songwriter, novelist, and painter Kathryn Williams is proud to release her new album ‘Night Drives'. The collection explores a more filmic sound, with a larger ensemble of instrumentation, particular emphasis on the strings and production from Ed Harcourt. It's out via One Little Independent Records. Journeying from leftfield contemporary pop to soft acoustics, Kathryn Williams uses her latest LP to explore a variety of fresh ideas driven, in part, by a host of collaborators. Kirsty Logan, Oystein Greni, Romeo Stodart, Matt Deighton, Simon Edwards, Yvette Williams, Neill Maccoll, Andy Bruce, Ida Wenoe, Joel Sarakula, Emily Barker and John Alder all have credits on various tracks across ‘Night Drives'. Kathryn explains “I've been releasing music for 24 years now. That fact blows me away, and things have changed so much over those years. The biggest change has been my love of co-writing and writing for other artists. This began when I first went on a writing retreat with Chris Difford forming close friendships and working relationships that are represented here”. Her first official album since ‘Hypoxia' in 2015, ‘Night Drives' opens with some of Kathryn's most immediately electronic tracks to date, the nihilistic ‘Human', big ballad ‘Answer In The Dark' with all it's bold, layered production, and the dynamic, infectious ‘Radioactive'. Elsewhere on the likes of ‘Moon Karaoke', ‘Magnets' and ‘The Brightest', a more cinematic sound is explored; slowly unravelling stories backed by delicate acoustics and elated, emotive string pieces. ‘Put The Needle On The Record' and joint closers ‘Starry Heavens' and ‘I Am Rich In All That I've Lost' are relaxed and fall into the more traditional world of folk inspired melancholia. Kathryn's inimitable charm colours the whole album with emotion and affection – occasionally brooding, always likable. Discussing some of the themes explored she says “Some of it is questioning who we are, realising that being human is about flaws, humility, and the consequences of how we react to others. It can be about the longevity of a long-term relationship, how to keep the fire burning and to celebrate that. So many love songs are about the first moments, but this is about enduring love. The simple things that fill a day and how our dreams and wants are so separate to the daily grind. The final track is a philosophical musing on loss and gain in life. How by living a long life we will lose so much, but that in itself is riches”.

The Wolfhounds special with Andy Golding in conversation with David Eastaugh The Wolfhounds began as a slightly askew indie pop/rock band, and signed to the Pink label in 1986. First EP Cut the Cake was well enough received for the NME to include them on their C86 compilation album. After three singles and debut album Unseen Ripples From A Pebble on Pink, they briefly moved to Idea Records for the Me single, then rejoined Pink's boss at his new label September Records. September soon evolved into Midnight Music which was the Wolfhounds' home for all subsequent releases. With original members Bolton and Clark replaced by David Oliver and Matt Deighton, the Wolfhounds' sound developed into a denser, less poppy sound. After a compilation of earlier material, second album proper Bright and Guilty was released in 1989, featuring the singles "Son of Nothing", "Rent Act" and "Happy Shopper". The sound progressed further with the albums Blown Away (also 1989) and Attitude (1990), which found them in Sonic Youth territory, interspersing raging guitars with elegant compositional exercises.
Freez and Joel are joined this week by fans Michael Gibson and Matt Deighton for a heavy dose of reminiscing and nostalgia.

My latest guest is described perfectly by @BritpopMemories as 'Probably the best bass player of his generation' - Damon Minchella. As a founding member of Ocean Colour Scene for 14 years, Damon toured the world, scoring five top five albums and 15 top 20 singles (they even supported Paul at my first live Weller experience in 1992!) From 1994-2006, he doubled up as a member of Paul Weller's band - playing on hit albums - Heliocentric, Illumination, Studio 150 and As Is Now, along with plenty of Live LPs and DVDs. Post Weller-Band, he has continued to work with Drummer, Steve White in three bands - Trio Valore (with Justin Shearn / Seamus Beaghen) Players (with Mick Talbot) and The Family Silver (with Matt Deighton). At the same time his place as one of the UK's most talented bassists has seen him in much in demand - playing live or in the studio with such rock 'n' roll greats as Richard Ashcroft, Paul McCartney, The Who, Jimmy Page, Dr John, Paolo Nutini and Amy Winehouse. You can find out more about Minchella & Manning here - https://www.minchellamanning.com/ ** If you've enjoyed the podcast, please leave a review and tell your friends! In this episode we welcome back our good friend and Eclipse on Tap host, Matt Deighton, aka The Duke! Matt shares with us his extensive knowledge on crypto, the blockchain, and everything in between. Crypto is a hot topic and an incredibly interesting (and brain-twisting!) technology, so we brought Matt on to help us better understand. Be sure to check out episode 14 in the coming weeks for the 2nd half of our crypto discussion.*Disclaimer: The PoFU Podcast seeks to perpetuate discussions of long term wealth-building and financial independence. 2021 finally sees the reemergence of British folk's most enigmatic lost son - and I can't quite believe that the mighty Matt Deighton is joining me on the podcast! You may recognize Matt Deighton from his time fronting Acid Jazz heroes Mother Earth or as Paul Weller's guitarist in the late 90's when he joined the band for the Heavy Soul Tour. And my goodness me - he has some fabulous stories to share! For almost two decades, the man they keep calling the natural successor to Nick Drake, Davey Graham and John Martyn has been himself more of a rumour – a murmur among musicians, songwriters and diehard music lovers who proudly display his rare vinyl releases like trophies. Matt's is a story of genuinely great musicianship and songwriting; but most of all, of the beauty and fragility of one of Britain's greatest lost talents and how life around him has sometimes shaped a fate beyond his control; but who has come back with something more beautiful every time the storm abated. Find out more about Matt Deighton - Overshadowed - the intimate documentary at www.mattdeightonmovie.com and check out his tunes at www.mattdeighton.co.uk Thanks for listening! Mick's Up! My Guest is The Style Council Legend - Mick Talbot - keyboardist, songwriter, singer, composer and record producer. On 1st March 1983, Paul Weller officially pulled the wraps off his new project, to be called The Style Council. Following the split of The Jam, Paul had re-signed to Polydor as a solo artist, and soon recruited former Merton Parkas, Dexy's Midnight Runners and Bureau keyboardist, Mick Talbot who remained his soul brother and sounding board for the next seven years. We talk about performing with The Jam, forming The Style Council and those incredible singles, EPs, albums, videos and live dates including Tokyo, Glastonbury, Live Aid and so much more! Post-TSC, Mick has worked with Paul on his first 3 solo albums (Paul Weller, Wild Wood and Stanley Road) and more recently for On Sunset (Baptiste, Village & Walkin'). You'll also find Mick's amazing musical skills on albums with former Style Council member Steve White, under the name Talbot/White and The Players (with the addition of former Ocean Colour Scene bassist Damon Minchella), in the jazz/funk band The Players. He played keyboards in Galliano, on the 1991 Young Disciples album Road to Freedom, and on recent LPs from Stone Foundation and even co-wrote & produced Dexy's 2012 LP One Day I'm Going to Soar 2020 saw him appear on the Monks Road Social album with the likes of Dr Robert, Matt Deighton, Neil Jones and Kathryn Williams. My thanks to Mick for giving up his time for this very special episode - and for Nicky Weller for helping to arrange it all. If you enjoyed it then please chuck a few quid to Romney House Cat Rescue - romneyhousecatrescue.org.uk Oh... and here's Júníus Meyvant that Mick mentions at the end too!!! https://juniusmeyvant.com/

On this episode of Eclipse On Tap we dive deep into the world of space beer. A common component across most, if not all, of our episodes, space beer has never been given center stage as a topic. Our good friends at Ecliptic Brewing in Portland, OR sent us three fantastic space-themed stouts from their Oort series that we really enjoyed taste testing. Discussion made its way into this month's space news as we progressed through the stouts. An episode of real mixed emotions for me, this one. As I explain in the introduction, I was suffering with my mental health at the time of interview and had had a panic attack that I was trying to mask throughout the time of the interview and concert. However, I am also sitting on stage with a genuine hero of mine, having the opportunity to talk about his music, the music industry in general with the odd ghost story thrown in for good measure. For all its shortcomings, I really hope you enjoy the episode. All music featured this week is from the ‘Monks Road Social, Down The Willows’ album that was released earlier this year. All 3 tracks played feature Matt on guitar and he is also the composer of ‘Head Down To Love’ & ‘Hello Though’. The final track featured this week is from the truly amazing Samantha Whates, whom I have featured on previous episodes. I am hoping to have a chat with Samantha in the near future about her upcoming album, ‘Waiting Rooms’. Don’t forget, tickets for Mother Earth are available at https://www.seetickets.com/event/mother-earth/100-club/1330640 The video of Matt playing Overshadowed can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCl25zL6Vn8 A big thank you to everyone who was involved in the concert including Steph, James, Dud, Stu, Dik & Fi, Daisy, Simon, Alys (and Mum) and the many people I have insulted by not including them on this list. And thank you, Matt. It was a beautiful night and as always you filled the room with some very special music.
The Wolfhounds special with David Callahan in conversation The Wolfhounds began as a slightly askew indie pop/rock band, and signed to the Pink label in 1986. First EP Cut the Cake was well enough received for the NME to include them on their C86 compilation album. After three singles and debut album Unseen Ripples From A Pebble on Pink, they briefly moved to Idea Recordsfor the Me single, then rejoined Pink's boss at his new label September Records. September soon evolved into Midnight Music which was the Wolfhounds' home for all subsequent releases. With original members Bolton and Clark replaced by David Oliver and Matt Deighton, the Wolfhounds' sound developed into a denser, less poppy sound.[citation needed] After a compilation of earlier material, second album proper Bright and Guilty was released in 1989, featuring the singles "Son of Nothing", "Rent Act" and "Happy Shopper". The sound progressed further with the albums Blown Away (also 1989) and Attitude(1990), which found them in Sonic Youth territory, interspersing raging guitars with elegant compositional exercises. This proved to be the final Wolfhounds release of the 80s, with the band splitting in early 1990. Golding and Stebbing formed Crawl, while Callahan hooked up with former Ultra Vivid Scene member Margaret Fiedler in Moonshake. Matt Deighton formed Mother Earth.

After three singles and debut album Unseen Ripples From A Pebble on Pink,[1] they briefly moved to Idea Records for the Me single, then rejoined Pink's boss at his new label September Records. The current line-up is David Callahan (guitar/vocals), Andy Golding (guitar/vocals), Peter Wilkins (drums) and Richard Golding (bass). The Wolfhounds reformed in 2005 for a gig to mark the 20th anniversary of the release of their first single "Cut the Cake" in 1985. In 2006, they were asked by Bob Stanley of St Etienne to play at the ICA in London, alongside Roddy Frame and Phil Wilson, to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the NME cassette C86. They have continued to play live, re-energised when The Membranes asked them to be special guests at The Lexington in London, and in March 2012 played with Laetitia Sadier from Stereolab in support at a benefit to raise funds for the Timperley Frank Sidebottom memorial statue. An EP called EP001 was released on Vollwert-Records Berlin in April 2012 containing three songs that pre-date the band's first single but that were never recorded satisfactorily at the time. Of these songs, 'Skullface' has picked up a lot of radio play. The band released several 7" singles in 2013, included on new album Middle Age Freaks, released on Odd Box Records in 2014. Also in 2014 an anniversary limited-edition issue of Unseen Ripples from a Pebble (plus bonus tracks) was released by Optic Nerve Recordings. In October 2016, the Wolfhounds released their sixth album Untied Kingdom (...Or How to Come to Terms with Your Culture). Louder Than War rated it 9/10.

After a week of quiet and relaxing at the Gutbuster café we are back to normal business. Doors opened with a couple of songs to mark the passing of the great Charles Bradley with a tune from the man himself and one from his key influence, the Godfather of Soul. We then travel Eastbound after our trip Westbound a couple of weeks back, stopping off with a tune from the Black Jazz Records collection and then for a quick blessing from The Left Reverend McD. Then (partly to show off his new vinyl purchase) Creamy sneaks in not one but two tracks from Suite London by power trio The Peddlers. Then a guest appearance from Brian Auger and Nicola Bright-Thomas on Matt Deighton’s 2nd solo album before taking a trip back in Matt’s timeline to Mother Earth days. Space is then made for two very special ladies, Miss Minnie Riperton and Rad (the latter being backed up by a whole array of Funk Royalty). We finish our fry-up with a couple helpings of red sauce, one from a baron and one from a fish. If you are enjoying your weekly helpings, please share the love. We reached 100 downloads this week – how long until we can reach a thousand??
For this week’s episode, we keep things upbeat (well for most of it anyway), with the spotlight shining on some of the greatest soul sisters. We have tunes by Nina Simone, Jean Knight, Sharon Jones (and Saun & Starr – Sharon Jones’s amazing backing singers). In the acoustic section this week we celebrate the joyful news that Matt Deighton has achieved target of his Pledge Music campaign by playing the title track of his last Pledge Music campaign of the album he wrote with Chris Difford. We also play a tune from Nick Drake and a wonderful alternative version of To Build A Home from the Cinematic Orchestra’s Live At The Royal Albert Hall album. Also with tunes from Eddie Fisher, Ju-Par Universal Orchestra, Ripple, Scream & Dance & The Lyman Woodard Organisation.
