She is also an entrepreneur, who started selling bamboo wig caps out of necessity. More on that later in the show. Endia describes her hair texture as soft like cotton, airy and fluffy. She embraced her natural four years ago, and typically wears it in a twisted style pulled away from her face. Let's go back to Endia's hair beginnings in Decatur, Georgia.

In this episode, two Davidson students and DMP collaborators interview Endia Beal, an artist, educator, and photographer from North Carolina. Endia discusses her educational background and how she found solace in art after experiencing a tragedy in high school. She decided to focus her artwork on racism, discrimination, and systemic marginalization to shed light on untold truths and initiate important conversations. Her series of works, "Am I What You're Looking For?" features young women transitioning into careers, and she photographs them in their own homes to create a sense of comfort and authenticity. The artist emphasizes the importance of avoiding imposing her own biases on her subjects and making the portraits a collaborative effort. The conversation then delves into microaggressions and their impact on the workplace. The artist shares her personal experience of facing prejudiced interview questions and how it inspired her art project, "Mock Interview." This project involved interviewing young white men with similar questions to those asked of women of color in real interviews, creating empathy and understanding. The artist's workshops aim to promote empathy and vulnerability by encouraging participants to share personal stories. She believes that art can initiate positive change and growth for both the artist and the audience, fostering understanding and empathy among diverse communities.

You may have heard the term fast fashion, which refers to the design, manufacturing and marketing of rapidly produced high volumes of clothing, usually made with low quality materials and sold for a cheap price. This method of fashion encourages quick turnover of clothing which produces more textile waste, pollution, and unsafe work environments for garment workers. It's estimated that Americans generate 16 million tons of textile waste per year, about 85% of which is sent to landfill or incinerated. Clothes donated to thrift stores and charity shops will often send unwanted clothing overseas, usually to East African and Southeast Asian countries. When these countries receive such large amounts of secondhand garments, it reduces the demand for locally made clothing, which is harmful to their economy, So, what can we do to prevent clothing waste? Well, to start, we can reduce the amount of clothing that we are purchasing. Opt to buy clothing that has a classic design that can be worn for many years. Take better care of your clothing - wash them less and repair any defects that happen from normal wear and tear. Shop secondhand when you do need a new item of clothing. Or if shop with companies that use recycled materials or are environmentally aware when creating new garments. When a piece of clothing has reached the end of it's life or you no longer need it, if it's in good condition, donate to someone who will give it new life, recycle it responsibly or reuse it in some way around your home. And that is what we call circular fashion. In todays episode, we're talking with two sustainable brown girls who have created businesses in circular fashion by repurposing and reselling unwanted clothing and accessories. Our first guest is Camille Lee, the owner of Wear Em Out Tees, an online shop selling upcycled t-shirts for the environmentally conscious consumer. The brand is all about pre-loved fashion, landfill diversion and circular fashion. Our second guest is Endia Henry, owner of Designer Accessory Adoption, an online boutique for pre-owned designer items. Through her shop and providing style advice, Endia's mission is to make high quality luxury and contemporary accessories attainable for more people. We'll be talking to each sustainable brown girl about how and why they started their business around circular fashion. The B&H Photography Podcast was very fortunate to be invited to the 29th Eddie Adams Workshop this year. The annual workshop, officially sponsored by Nikon with support from B&H, is a unique and inspiring event, bringing together 100 young photographers with some of the world’s most recognized photojournalists and editors, including thirteen Pulitzer Prize winners, for four intense days of photographic presentation and collaboration. The team leaders and speakers are a who’s-who of the photojournalism community, and we took our opportunity to sit down with many of them for conversations that ranged from personal inspiration and technical innovation to the photographer-editor relationship and how to set a camera trap for mountain lions. In the weeks to come, we will present several of our “conversations from the barn,” thus named because we created an impromptu studio in the fabled barn on the Eddie Adams farm. Our first conversation joins Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer John H. White and photographer, artist, and educator Endia Beal. Mr. White could be considered the spiritual heart of the workshop and anyone who hears him speak will understand why. His work for Chicago’s daily newspapers dates back to the late 1960s, and he was on staff at the Chicago Sun-Times when he earned his Pulitzer. His work is well rounded, as any newspaper photographer’s should be, and covers events big and small, but it his depiction of Chicago’s African-American community that has garnered the most attention. We speak with him about his upbringing in North Carolina, his relationship with his subjects, including his friend Muhammad Ali, and the most important camera he has ever used. Endia Beal is an accomplished artist currently serving as Associate Professor of Art and the Director of the Diggs Gallery at Winston-Salem State University. Her early artistic work emerged from personal tragedy and called into question cultural and skin-color-based stereotypes in her hometown community. Her more recent work continues to pose questions, exploring the identity of minority women within the corporate space. Join us as we chat with these two remarkable people about their lives and work. Guests: Endia Beal and John H. White Photo: John H. White www.keepinflight.com www.endiabeal.com
