Great film directors all have one thing in common—lofty artistic ambitions. They take on the toughest issues and most provocative social themes of their day hoping to eloquently bring them to life on screen. Utilizing the movie screen the same way great artists gaze upon their canvases, cinema artists know that every inch of the frame offers a crucial opportunity to leave audiences spellbound by their handiwork. The most challenging directors disguise their bold artistic intentions behind the mask of easily accessible genre forms, often burying something quite profound beneath a story's glossy surface. This sort of subtext and the prospect of unraveling a hidden encoded message in the fabric of the film's narrative is what drives some movie lovers (and film professors) to attempt to decipher what is really going on beneath the scenes playing out before our eyes and ears. There is always something mesmerizing to be uncovered in a great film. Marc Lapadula and I will chat about how he selects films that accomplish their missions by creating some of the most memorable and timeless moments and performances ever captured on celluloid. On January 3rd of 1897, in the urban city of San Francisco, California, Jenetter and Louis Arzner welcomed their first and only child, Dorothy. By 1897, Louis Arzner was involved in a major restaurant chain, which was often visited by Hollywood stars such as Mary Pickford(an actress and producer), Mack Senett(a studio head commonly known as “The King of Comedy”), and Douglas Fairbanks (an actor, screenwriter, director, and producer). Alexandre Rockwell, filmmaker and professor at NYU Tisch School of the Arts joins us this week. He's that one professor you had in college that was so amped about his craft that you couldn't help but want to pick up a camera. His passion for film making is palpable, contagious even, which is why he is such a great person to teach the future filmmakers of tomorrow. We were interested in learning about what it's like in film school these days and he shed a ton of light on the experience now. NYU uses film and the students love that they do. Alexandre tells us why he prefers to use it as a filmmaker and why the budding filmmakers got “bit by the film bug.”
