This week, #ELOsoFumarTakes welcomes the entire Smokin' Tabacco Team to sit down for #Take182. Matthew Tabacco & Nicole Patrice have steadily, yet quickly built one of the rising Cigar Media outlets in the last two years. While plenty (understandably) took this last 18 months to find bearings, get reacquainted with life, try to find normalcy, these two folks attacked an opportunity. The answer? For Nicole, it was to co-build a great cigar media brand. For Matthew, well, there are some theories he took the year to wonder how on earth he could get his incredible partner to say yes to forever with him. The answer? Cigars, of course. We take a look at their journey together and apart. Enjoy! For this occasion, Matt, Nicole, and I are spotlighting the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation. I ask you, humbly, to take a few minutes and take part in this survey. Two major points: 1) No personal info will be asked for or given by you 2) THE GOAL: to see what, if any, influence and impact Cigar Media has on the way you, the consumer, views and takes part in this industry we love. It would honor me to hear and see your thoughts. Thank you in advance. Click here: https://tcu.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1X1Pg1Jgp813LRr This is going to be one awesome #Take! Enjoy! Download Podcast TranscriptWe all know how important networking is. But did you know that it could be delicious? Nicole Dillon works in marketing and event planning, and she is also a bruncher. Combining the best of two worlds, Nicole created Women Who Brunch, a community of women who love networking, and learning from each other over brunch. Highlights:How did it all start? Nicole recounts everything that happened to her in 2013 that led her to start Women Who Brunch. It was a need to make real connections with people, not just getting a business card at some marketing event and forgetting about it over the weekend, and a need to meet and support women.Making networking and learning a delicious experience. Nicole explains how Women Who Brunch works and what it means to everyone involved: it isn’t just an opportunity to learn, it is also an opportunity to make real connections, friendships even.Looking for the human connection. For Nicole, in today’s world, we have so many ways to connect with each other, but it seems that we don’t know how to communicate with one another: haters on social media, the obsession over the number of followers, insecurities that we might have before posting. You need to find people (and content), that resonate with you, that inspire you.Don’t let social media bring you down! There’s a thin line between finding content that inspires you and content that makes you compare yourself to others and feel down about it. Nicole had her fair share of those, but she was able to change her point of view: stop thinking about what others are doing, and focus on your story, yourself and your community. Nicole Apelian We have a great show today with Dr. Nicole Apelian talking about "Herbology, MS, and The Healing Power Of Plant Medicine." Nicole Apelian Dr. Nicole Apelian is an herbalist, a biologist, a survival TV celebrity, an anthropologist, a survival skills instructor, and a mother. Nicole was a challenger on the second and fifth seasons of the History Channel’s TV series “Alone”, where she thrived in the wilderness totally solo with little more than her knife and her wits. She is also the author of two books, "The Lost Book of Herbal Remedies: The Healing Power of Plant Medicine and A Reference Guide to Surviving Nature: Outdoor Preparation and Remedies." Her latest book, "Forager’s Guide to Wild Foods: Edible Plants, Lichens, Mushrooms and Seaweeds will be available this Spring." The Healing Power of Plant Medicine Nicole has always had a love for the outdoors. With a bug collection, a nest collection, and a rock collection, her love for outdoor medicine was fueled by her MS diagnosis. For Nicole, herbal medicine is a life saver. Her daily go to is a combination for three mushroom. Lion’s mane mushroom, also known as Hericium erinaceus, is known to boost cognitive function and stimulate Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), proteins that play a pivotal role in the development and the maintenance of neurons. Studies show great potential for myelination and regeneration of nerves. Nicole takes this (along with the Turkey Tail and Reishi Mushroom Extracts) daily as her mushroom trio. You do not have to take these three mushrooms though. Nicole has been taking her anxiety blend as well daily as well as an added elderberry boost. For preventing general illness (which causes the dreaded immune response that then causes MS to flare up) I rely on my healing trinity of Elderberry Tincture, Usnea Spray, and All-Purpose (First Aid) Salve. (I also make each of these items myself, and have made them available individually or all together in a Travel Pack from my Apothecary.) Thank You! In this episode of Trish Rock Inspires-Podcast I speak with the amazingly inspiring Nicole Cusack from Nictritious. Nicole is a Nutrition Coach and NLP Practitioner. She comes from a 20+year background working in "Mainstream" healthcare but has discovered first-hand the power that food has on health. It was a change in diet over 5 years ago where Nicole was finally able to shake off lifelong chronic health issues. This led her down the path to Nutrition Coaching so she could help others achieve the freedom from illness that she had experienced. Listen in to hear the story of how she dealt with chronic health issues from changing what she was eating. For Nicole, mindset is also important as is putting out to the Universe (or whatever you like to call it) for what you want your future to look like. She does this through meditation, hypnotherapy, affirmations and also a vision board! The Unconventional Path: Entrepreneurship and Innovation Stories and Ideas With Bela and Mike
This week we have a special episode of our podcast. To start off the 2021 New Year, Mike and I have looked over our 100+ episodes and pick the ones we think are the most interesting or thought-provoking. We also want to thank all of our super guests and you, our listeners. In the 2 plus years, we have been doing this podcast, we have had over 17,000 listens all around the world. From the United States to Sweden to Saudi Arabia to India to Uganda. It has been a load of fun and we have certainly garnered many insights from our guests. Bela: One of the episodes that stands out to me is EP-95 with Mike Saccocio. He is the executive director of the city mission in Schenectady, New York. The creativity, energy, and compassion that Mike has helped so many people. I was fascinated to learn how Mike took a negative, ie. having a homeless shelter in your neighborhood, and turned it into a positive with the downtown ambassador program. Just pure genius. A complete win-win. So check out EP-95 with Mike Saccocio Mike: My favorite topic has been organizational culture and two episodes that really helped me better understand entrepreneurial culture were David Dussault and Darrin Jahnel. David was our guest in EP-2 and is the CEO of P1 Industries, which is a precision mechanical component manufacturing company. And Darrin Jahnel was featured in both EP-5 and EP-84. Darrin is the Co-Founder of Jahnel Group, a software development company. Darrin was on the show twice so, that in itself says something. I was really impressed with how both David and Darrin focused on their company culture, It is reflected in everything they do, their management style, company functions, and meetings, hiring practices, and opportunities for employee growth. Many founders talk about culture, but very few do anything about it. We can all learn something from these two founders. Give them a listen on EP-2, 5, and 84. Bela: The next one I have is EP-27 with Euwyn Poon the founder of Spin. Spin partners with cities, college and corporate campuses, and businesses to provide dockless scooter-share services to get you where you need to go. I had several key take-a-ways from this episode. Euwyn spoke about how he looks at the VC's who invest in his company. He is hiring them! He looks at what the VC's bring to the table in addition to money. What connections do they have? What skills and experience do they have? How can they help him grow his business? Euwyn also discusses how he wanted to be at the epicenter of the start-up universe. He wanted to be where all the action is, the talent is, because he fletch this was the best environment for success. Mike: One thing I am really focusing on right now in my teaching is trying to influence issues of gender inequality in the startup world. The data are really concerning, so I have been actively trying to explore my own teaching, coaching, and mentoring to try and make sure opportunities are not being unintentionally blocked for women entrepreneurs. So, I really like EP-10 with Charlotte Hayden and EP-11 with Nicole Snow. You know Charlotte and I think there is a good story about inspiration, taking actionable steps, seeking mentors and advisors. For Nicole, I think it's all about building a customer community. Both are great stories that are worth listening to. This has been a fun episode to put together. What a great way to kick off what we hope is a better 2021 for all of us after all the challenges we faced in 2020! We love to hear from our listeners, send us your questions, comments, and suggestions at bela.and.mike@gmail.com - we will answer your questions in a future episode. Erin and Nicole take you smack dab in the middle of their Future Diary process as it unfolds. Join alongside them as Nicole discovers a future she cannot live without, and Erin talks her through the steps to make it happen. What did you write in your Future Diary? If you haven't yet written one, stop right there and carve out 30 minutes to make it happen! What one thing will you not compromise on having? And what one, first step will you take towards achieving it? It's truly that simple. We start the episode off with some inspiring music. Erin Hatzikostas has found the perfect song for running, and air-drumming at the gym - Rise Up by Imagine Dragons. She also talks about an article she helped to write for Well+Good - "It's Been 5 Months Since Pants Died-But Is the Work From Home Dress Code Compromising Productivity." But after a brief conversation on music, Nicole Licata Grant can escape her homework review no longer: The Future Diary. Nicole talks about how she had trouble getting into what she thought was the right mindset to write this Future Diary. She realizes that maybe being in a bad place is in fact a good time for her to write. Erin talks about how a Future Diary is not meant to impress people or be fancy writing. They are just supposed to be honest about what your perfect day would be. Then they both decide to talk through each of their Future Diaries. Erin asks Nicole to focus on one thing that stands out from her diary. For Nicole it's focussing on creating an artistic outlet: interviewing artists, dancing, writing, and more. So then Erin asks, what would be your first step to do that? Nicole decides she's going to write a blog: a series f funny essays. Erin also asks her how it would feel to not achieve any of this. How would it feel to never achieve a single thing you wanted to, from the biggest part of your perfect day, to the smallest thing? Reflecting on the last question, Nicole starts to realize things about her current situation, and how she thinks she should be feeling about life. Erin encourages her to start thinking about trying to impress herself more than those around her. Erin then asks Nicole to go out and find five extenders - 5 people who have the success that Nicole wants and share their stories of how they got there. Erin then reads from her Future Diary. If you think it sounds grandiose, remember this is her third time writing one, and the first two largely came true. That is the point of the Future Diary, if you set out where you want to be in life, you are so much more likely to get there. If you’re looking to get into writing, or better yet, if you are a writer with their sights on a book deal, today’s episode is sure to bring you value. Heather’s guest today is Nicole Meier, an accomplished novelist who just signed a book deal with a large publisher. She’s here to share with us her experience and strategy to help you find success with your next book. She’ll discuss methods and tactics to make sure you can claim your spot on the shelf. Believe it or not, it wasn’t until her 40th birthday when Nicole made the choice to start writing professionally. After graduation, Nicole spent time shadowing editors and writers but never built up the confidence to write her own piece. Once she shifted her focus to her own writing, she began writing freelance pieces and started a blog. From there, she moved into her manuscript. For Nicole, she never had a defined, individual mentor early on. She gleaned her advice from every note, every edit, and every critique she received from her writing. Over time, she had built up experience that helped her in the long-term. Many creative people tend to work in a bubble, which can make it hard to get feedback. Nicole recommends getting a critique group going, get feedback from a trusted friend, and continue to absorb perspective. This can take practice! The writing industry is full of rejection and ‘no’s’, but it only takes one ‘yes’ to change everything. Nicole even went as far as writing a “practice novel” that allowed her to dip her toes into critique. Many writers get burnt out. Sometimes it can be ugly, but Nicole talks about how important it is to be persistent and resilient. You have to want it really, really badly. The same way a professional athlete dedicates their lives to a sport, you have to do the same. Nicole touches on her daily routine. Writing a book takes serious disciple. Nicole writes before her family wakes up in the morning. She does this every day. There is a flow that comes, she says, and if you work that muscle it becomes easier. Her recommendation is to make space for that writing every day. One secret? She doesn’t believe in writer’s block. When nothing is coming to her, she has her characters write letters to each other to get the flow back. There are prompts out there that can help as well! What you’ll learn On today’s show, Nicole shares with us her process of writing, her daily practices, some tips and tricks to break through writer’s block, and the publishing industry. She touches on the ups and downs of being a writer, and how persistence is key when you have your sights on a book deal. LINKS Nicolemeierauthor.com The Second Chance Supper Club on Amazon
In today’s episode, Chase DiMarco talks with Dr. Nicole Washington. Nicole joins Chase to discuss some difficult and uncomfortable topics that we all have to confront. This episode will focus on the issues of race, racism and representation within the healthcare and education systems. Originally from Louisiana, Nicole moved to Oklahoma to attend medical school 20 years ago. Nicole's previous experiences in education had been significantly more diverse but now, out of 90 students in her class, there were only 2 black students. Nicole talks about the constant need to evaluate the attitudes of others towards her. She goes on to describe her experiences with patients who either don’t want her to treat them or assume she is there to clean the hospital room just because of her race. Nicole and Chase go on to discuss how to avoid performative activism and encourage not only diversity, but inclusion. For Nicole, it is necessary that administrations and companies start intentionally widening their search pools. People also need to understand their own biases and learn to prevent them from influencing decision making. Chase then asks how people can be better allies within the healthcare system. Nicole explains that just like in medicine, people should research and get a basic understanding of the issues. Show that you are actively working to support people of color by independently seeking and understanding cultural differences. Nicole and Chase end this episode by discussing how this is not just a political issue, rather it affects all aspects of our society. People in the healthcare industry have to acknowledge going forward that the current climate has an effect on the physical and mental health of black and POC patients, physicians, and students. Healthcare professionals should be asking uncomfortable questions to create better treatment plans. Everyone has to understand what privilege means, their level of privilege, and avoid assumptions to improve healthcare and education. Could you imagine taking custody of your 14 year old sister when you yourself are only 21? For Nicole and Kylie Meckley, that was reality. Kylie, the younger of the two sisters, dealt with some very unfortunate circumstances from an early age. Seeing what was happening to her sister, Nicole jumped in to try to stop it. After several years of tying to get Kylie to come and live with her, Kylie finally decided to do so at age 14. When you listen to the episode and hear the circumstances Kylie was dealing with, you will have nothing but respect for her level of courage in being able to make the choice that she did. This episode brings with it a perspective we haven’t had on the show before—the perspective of a young woman who was watching someone she loves deal with mental health and addiction issues they never deserved to have. With this new perspective comes lessons learned about mental health that we don’t always hear on the show, and I am so thankful that Nicole reached out to me to share this with all of us. As always, please let us know what you thought of the episode! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/omhc/support

One fall night in 2010, my wife Nicole and I were watching the Suze Orman Show. (Yes, I used to DVR it). There was this fun segment where someone would call in and Suze would analyze that person's financial health and give them a grade. It was called How Am I Doing? One term that we kept seeing over and over again on this segment was “Net Worth”. Since we were personal finance newbies, we had no idea what this meant. Nicole and I were making a combined annual income of $130,000 so we figured our net worth must be HUGE. After the show was over, we decided to see how rich we really were. There was no doubt in our mind that we’d be better off than most of the jokers that call in to the show and get an “F” grade from Suze! We walked upstairs and started to write down all of our numbers on a big whiteboard. By separating our “assets” (what we owned) and our liabilities (what we owed) into two big columns, we started to discover that we weren’t rich. We were kinda broke. Although we were making a solid income together, our liabilities were much higher than our assets. Here is a snapshot of what our numbers looked like back in 2010 (rounded educated guesstimates based on me losing some of our data along the way): There’s no way were going to get an “A” grade on Suze’s show with a -$50,000 net worth! This epiphany moment was just the jolt of reality we needed to start making progress on our finances. Our short-term goal was to get this net worth number in positive territory ASAP! It was time for us to make a change. Here's what we did to increase our net worth by $800,000 in 8 years. 1. Track Your Net Worth Net Worth Total (September 2010) = -$50,000 Nicole and I quickly realized that we couldn’t improve our financial situation if we weren’t tracking our net worth. This number was going to be the barometer for our future financial success. We took all of the numbers off of our whiteboard and inserted them into an excel spreadsheet. From that point on, we updated our asset and liability totals monthly to track our progress. Even just seeing the numbers helped! (Side Note: Personal Capital wasn’t around back then, but if it was, it would have made the whole net worth tracking process a lot easier. It’s free and it automatically updates your net worth by synching up your accounts. We use it now and love it.) 2. Live on a Monthly Budget Net Worth Total (January 2011) = -$35,000 Another monthly habit Nicole and I adopted around this time was living on a budget. We got the idea after reading Dave Ramsey’s The Total Money Makeover. He talked about the importance of living on a zero-based budget and giving every dollar an assignment. Getting on the same financial page with Nicole before each month began was really important for us as we started our marriage. Each month, we’d do the following: Review our spending, saving and debt balances Plan out next month’s budget Discuss our financial dreams and goals to ensure we’re headed down a path we’re both excited about We eventually learned about a budgeting tool called Mint that automated the budgeting process much like Personal Capital did for our net worth tracking. This tool saved us a ton of time and it was free too! (Side Note: If you’re looking for a budgeting tool specifically for couples, Zeta is an excellent option.) 3. Eliminate Your Consumer Debt Net Worth Total (September 2011) = $20,000 After being inspired by Dave Ramsey’s debt crushing ways, we decided that becoming consumer debt-free would be an excellent way to increase our net worth. For me, I really hated having student loans and wanted them gone as soon as possible. My 6.8% interest rate did not help the process either. (Debt refinancing services like SoFi would have been huge for me back then!) For Nicole, she loved her 2008 Audi A4 and thought it would be incredible to own it outright with no payments. Through our monthly Budget Party, we discovered we could eliminate both of these debts before the end of the year. This would require us to essentially live on my income and use Nicole’s to pay off the debt. The plan worked! We were consumer debt free by September 2011 and we were in the positive net worth territory to boot. After making the final payment on Nicole’s car, we took a joy ride in her paid-for Audi A4 on a beautiful fall night in Michigan. 4. Save 50% of Your Income Net Worth Total (January 2012) = $45,000 At this point in our marriage, we were a month away from having our first child. Our financial standing was looking pretty solid. We increased our income to around $170,000 by the end of 2011. Our little Zoey would be born into a debt-free family and that made us proud. We liked our current home, but we started thinking about our family growing from 2 to 3 (to eventually 4). Getting into a good school system was very important for us. That being said, we knew that homes in our desired school district were expensive! Our new goal became saving up as much money as possible for a big down payment on our dream home. Our plan was to save 50% of our income and live on the other 50%. 5. Increase Your Income Net Worth Total (February 2013) = $210,000 Luckily, 2012 was an outstanding year for us income-wise. We were both working full-time at our jobs and brought in the most money we’ve ever made as a couple together in one year ... $280,000! I had a commission-based sales job and I achieved the company record for most annual revenue brought in on our most important account (it was a small company). We ended up saving way more than 50% that year. Here are some highlights of what we did with our money: Saved over $100,000 cash Updated my bachelor pad into a family home Bought my first car with cash Funded our daughter's 529 Savings Account with $10,000 when she was born Traveled to Puerto Rico for a nice getaway over the holidays 6. Get a 15-Year Mortgage Net Worth Total (January 2014) = $359,000 When we finally bought our dream home, the cash savings we amassed allowed us to put down 45%. This cut our new mortgage principal by a sizable amount immediately. Our plan was to pay off this mortgage in 5 years! We went with a 15-year mortgage through LendingTree and got a super-low 3% fixed rate. This helped us to put more toward the principal balance each month and push toward our goal of becoming mortgage-free by 2018. 7. Be Flexible Because Life Happens Net Worth Total (January 2015) = $385,000 When our second child (Calvin) came into our lives, we decided it was best to have Nicole stay at home and raise our two kids. Since we’d been essentially living on one income for quite a while at this point, it wasn’t that big of a life shocker for us. My income was still very comfortable at around $160,000 that year. Welcome to the World Calvin! This income change did slow our net worth growth quite a bit, but honestly, those previous few years were unicorns! We’re just happy we saved like we did so that Nicole could spend more time with our kids. It was one of the best decisions we ever made as a family. 8. Max Your Retirement Savings Net Worth Total (January 2017) = $547,000 In 2016, we decided that maxing out all three of our retirement accounts (401k, Andy's Roth IRA and Nicole's Roth IRA) was a smart move. My workplace 401k had been maxed since 2013, but we had not been doing the same for our Roths. In addition to clobbering our mortgage principal, this tax-advantaged plan helped us break the half-million mark in our net worth journey! By this time, we were fully into Personal Capital to help us track our progress. It became quite addicting actually. 9. Pay Off Your Mortgage Early Net Worth Total (February 2018) = $679,000 In November 2017, we paid off our 15-year mortgage in just under 4 years. One year ahead of schedule! Nicole, Zoey, Calvin and I had an epic mortgage freedom celebration together that we’ll never forget. We wanted our kids to remember this important moment in our lives so they too could be inspired to live without debt in the future. Mortgage Freedom! Without a mortgage, our net worth has been increased steadily. The incredible stock market surge in 2017 definitely helped as well! 10. Save For First Rental Property Net Worth Total (January 2019) = $764,000 Although 2018 saw an overall drop in the stock market, we weathered the storm and kept up a high savings rate. Most of our extra money went into a savings account to build up enough money to buy our first rental property. We also did fun things like update our home and go on some epic family vacations. The Hill Family is Cabo in 2018 11. Create a 30-Hour Work Week Lifestyle Net Worth Total (January 2020) = $917,000 Recently, we decided that buying our first rental property was not something we wanted to do. Instead, we chose to use our cash as a runway for me to work on my small business full-time (or part-time rather). My goal is to work 30 hours per week so I can spend more time with family, taking care of my health and enjoying more life today. Interviewing Author Rachel Cruze I was inspired by my wife who recently went back to work and created a 30-hour workweek that she loves. Her commute is short, her workload is reasonable and it’s a nice change of pace for a woman who’s been a stay-at-home Mom for nearly 5 years. Plan For the Future We’ve come a long way since our -$50,000 net worth in 2010. I’m so proud of the hard work that Nicole and I put in along the way. Without my wife’s partnership, none of this would have been possible. As we’re closing in on a $1,000,000 net worth, my first thought is … it’s just a number. On the surface, it really doesn’t mean anything. But when you peel back the layers and find out what’s inside, that’s when you discover what our net worth is made of. Our home, our cars, our retirement savings and our emergency savings are all things that bring our family joy. These assets will allow us to live happy, healthy and purposeful lives. They will also allow us to give generously of both our time and our money. With some hard work and a little luck, our kids will see our example and continue to strengthen this family tree of ours in the future. Where are you in your net worth journey? For Nicole, creativity starts with vulnerability, that means outside her comfort zone. When she doesn’t feel vulnerable, she said: “I think there’s a problem there.” Since age four, she has been training and taming her body in order to memorize and perform the choreographies. It’s a lot of work and then, there’s a point where the music comes on, and her body moves on stage like a machine, like it knows exactly how to be. That’s the magic of it on stage. But I asked her : how does the audience interact with the show? That’s the question of the week. It’s time to listen to her.
We kick off Industry Celebrities & Texas Apartment Association Education Foundation collaboration for TAAEF's Room To Grow series have teamed up to share stories of industry professionals who have found not just a job but a career in the apartment industry. In this episode, Kimberly D. Scott, 15-year multifamily professional and Nicolle Block, a multifamily executive with 25 years of experience in this industry, have a conversation about why they love multifamily. Nicolle started her career at a very young age. She’s one of the lucky ones who fell into the industry. As a student, Nicolle needed something to help her with housing, and that was when she stumbled on the lane that took her to the industry that she has come to love after more than two decades now. She found her passion and worked her way up year after year. Not everybody is blessed enough to find out right away what sparks joy for them. For Nicole, it only took her less than a year after she started to see that she was on the right path because she saw a lot of movement and growth in the company that she worked for at that time. With the years that she spent working for one company, she shared that for someone to fully have growth and development, one must not wait for someone to point it out. This misconception often leads to some people quitting and then wondering why the years that passed have been stagnant and unfulfilling. Although some who people who genuinely care for us might be able to point out the things that we can and should do, if we are wanting to have more or something different, then it should be our prerogative to raise our hand and say what we want to learn and do. As moms, sometimes we have no other option than to power through everything. We have other people besides ourselves to think about and we put ourselves on the back burner because our kids, our spouse, our families, our job and everything else is more important. For Nicole, the signs of her disease were hidden under the exhaustion of having to raise three little children, and it wasn’t until her oldest son noticed a lump on her neck, that she went to get herself checked up. The news of having cancer came on top of all the chaos in her life – suffering a miscarriage, having to move to another city with her husband and taking care of her kids. Nicole Jacobsmeyer is a proud mother of three boys, all under five years of age. Since becoming a mom, her life mantra has been, “Embrace the Chaos”, spiritually, mentally, physically and emotionally. Girl power is making a mark in the hunting world, and women in hunting have become a big thing. GearJunkie’s Hunt/Fish Editor, Nicole Qualtieri, proves that women can be as tough and efficient as men when it comes to hunting. This demographic shift is real as more adult women showcase their skills with their rods, guns, and bows in the field. Nicole talks about other women hunters such as Chelsea Cassens and the importance of being in a hunting community that welcomes women with open arms. For Nicole, hunting is a spiritual experience that is not exclusive for men alone but can also be enjoyed by women.
With a talent for creating special events that blossomed while working for her dad’s car stereo shop, Nicole Mahoney got her start in marketing at Frontier Field in Rochester. She also began serving as the executive director of the internationally known Lilac Festival. Later on, she headed the Canandaigua, New York Business Improvement District while also performing projects for the tourism promotion agency Visit Rochester. In 2009, Nicole founded Break the Ice Media, with more than 20 years of experience in tourism marketing. She now hosts “Destination on the Left”, a highly successful tourism marketing podcast. As a business owner, Nicole knows what it takes to be successful. She founded BTI to help businesses tell their brand story through public relations, digital and traditional channels. She has the ability to uncover unique marketing opportunities and develop marketing and public relations initiatives that help clients build long-term success. On this episode of Destination on the Left, Nicole shares a personal family story that has inspired her to never give up even when the going gets tough. She explains why using this advice is important to all professionals and how applying it can make you a better tourism marketing specialist. What You Will Learn in This Episode: Why you should always go for it – just like Nicole’s daughter Changing the “soundtrack” in your head to conquer self-doubt How to avoid “imposter syndrome” in your quest to pursue your dreams How to own your experiences as a unique individual The power of stories and their impact on our successes Believing in Yourself What inspires you to keep moving forward, no matter the obstacle? For Nicole, it’s the story of her daughter Maeve’s perseverance and strength in the face of self-doubt. With the goal of being selected as the commencement speaker at her high school graduation, Maeve saw the competition and was filled with self-doubt. Stricken with “imposter syndrome”, Maeve believed she was not good enough and that there would always be somebody better for the job. Nicole quickly reminded her: “The only way to know for sure you won’t get picked is to not even try.” Realizing she should aim for what she wanted, no matter the odds, Maeve took the leap and went for it. The result? She was selected as one of the two speakers at her commencement. From her success, tourism marketing professionals should always be reminded to aim high, go for it and never give up. You never know if you don’t try. The Power of Stories Maeve was inspired after being moved by the commencement speaker at her sister’s graduation. Nicole continues to be inspired by what Maeve shared in her speech: a personal story about great adversity. Maeve suffers from chronic lung disease, a condition that put her in the emergency room for eight weeks in 2002. Despite a seemingly impossible uphill climb, Nicole, her husband and Maeve persisted, and Maeve was off of oxygen and medication without a transplant when she was five years old. Although she doesn’t remember much of it, Maeve was able to teach everyone the power of her own story and remind her parents of the power of theirs. Stories like Maeve’s remind us of how different we are and how stories reach us differently. The one constant is this: we all have the power to see the good in stories, change the soundtrack in our heads and go for it. Nicole hopes that this episode and Maeve’s story will resonate with tourism marketing professionals just as much as they did for her. Nicole Moore is a love coach and in this episode, we’re going to talk about what it really means to accept your body just the way it is. She recently posted on Instagram about how her experience of her body changed after having a baby. Our bodies are always changing and yet we all have a tendency to get hung up on why they are not the way we think they should be. In this episode, we talk about how to change our mindset about our bodies, why our self worth doesn’t have anything to do with the way we look and why we need to feel good about ourselves. I’m curious about the changes you’ve had in your body and how that has affected you? Nicole has observed people saying how having a baby ruined their body and this got her thinking about this message that is being spread on social media. Nicole saw a lot of posts about people ‘snapping back’ after having a baby but that didn’t happen for her. She decided to embrace where her body is right now. How did you avoid getting into this dialogue of beating yourself up? Because I think that’s the easy thing to do. Nicole realized she could choose not to make herself feel miserable. Throughout her 20s she suffered so much from the thoughts in her head and comparing herself to other people. She has made a commitment to herself to keep her mind full of love rather than full of negativity. How you relate to your body, doesn’t really have anything to do with how it looks, right? Nicole agrees. It’s all about the thoughts in your head. Which is better - to have a body that weighs more and not be in mental turmoil or to have a body that weighs less but have your mind in turmoil? Every woman at some time has called themselves fat in their heads. And it’s not nice. When Nicole first started gaining weight she was upset. She started to look at why her self worth was linked to her body. She had to look at what her other values were. When she was at high school she lost a lot of weight and boys started to pay attention to her. She had to go back and start unravel where this feeling came from and what her true worth was. Can you share an example of what an internal essence would be? For Nicole one of her essences is love. If she goes to a dinner party she could put a lot of focus on how she looks or she could focus on how to be really present with people. Your essence is who you are internally when everything that can change is stripped away. What do you say to somebody who is feeling that their weight is holding them back in love, work or just in being more seen? It’s not the weight. It’s your thoughts and judgments about the weight. It’s your decision that because the weight is here you shouldn’t feel good about yourself. That’s what is holding you back. When Nicole first started gaining weight, she wondered if she could still do media appearances. She thought about how she would look on camera. Then she realized that she deserved that experience of being on camera. So often we think we need to look a certain way in order to receive love. Although there are always people out there who will criticize how you look, that just means they aren’t the right people for you. A romantic relationship is not going to work unless you are accepted for who you are. It’s so much easier to find somebody who accepts who you are than to change who you are in order to find someone. I love how you talk about how it’s not that you don’t have those negative thoughts, but you deal with them differently. Nicole watches here mind all the time to see what thoughts she is having. If her mind is telling her something which makes her feel crappy, she will feel the feelings and then choose something different. When I was put Evan to sleep and I say to him ‘you can do anything’. And he said to me the other day ‘Mummy you can do anything’. I actually found it helpful for me to hear it from him. It reminded me of the power of words. Kids are the truth. For Nicole one of the biggest benefits of having a child is seeing what she wants her son to have in his life and to see what that means about her perception about things. People talk a lot about what they lose by becoming a mum but there’s so much that we gain. Focusing on all the bodily changes misses the point about what it means to become a mum. Don’t you think that helps soften some of the guilt that you may have? This conversation about women and their bodies just takes away power. We only have so much attention available throughout the day. Nicole used to count calories and it would take up so much attention and so much power. When we’re not focused on what our bodies look like we have so much power to focus elsewhere. What would you tell your younger self? You are better than you think you are. You are already worthy. You’re always going to be beautiful. And you are going to meet him and he is going to love you Nicole has a lot of single clients and they have this thought in their heads that they may not meet the guy. If you look at how much time is in front of you, it’s crazy to think that you won’t meet someone. Just to play the other side. It doesn’t mean don’t take of yourself. It doesn’t mean don’t buy the eye cream or get hair extensions. It doesn’t mean you don’t take action on things that make you want to look better. It’s more about where that is coming from. Is it coming from a place of ‘I’m enough’ or is it coming from a place of ‘I’m not enough’? Nicole talks about how she gets eyelash extension regularly but she also has a conversation with herself about how even if she didn’t have them she would still look good. There’s nothing wrong with doing these things but it’s important to do these things from a place of worth. The way that we look, the way we do our hair, we can let those things hold us back. I know I have. Nicole did a Facebook live video where somebody commented that she needed to condition her extensions. Those sorts of comments might stop a lot of people from putting themselves out there. Nicole told herself that it was more important that she jumps on and does Facebook live even if she doesn’t look perfect. It’s all about the inner game. And then it becomes easier if you reinforce that positive relationship with yourself. One of the things we can do is stop giving attention to this conversation. Nicole often reminds herself that men will just turn on the camera and start recording without thinking about how they look. We identify with all of these parts of ourselves. Hair is a big deal. How do not we let these perceptions of ourselves and how we look hold us back? It’s alright to have an idea of how you want to look, but we wouldn't let ourselves feel bad if that’s not how we are right now. And complimenting ourselves. And other people. I love seeing you without your glasses because you can see your face. Glasses was something Nicole had to accept about herself. It’s a habit we have to look at ourselves in the mirror and see everything that is wrong with us. That we want to change and want to fix. I’ve done some mirror work, where I looked at what was beautiful about me. I can see myself start to change. Our self-perceptions determine our reality. Most people have a more favorable perception of us than we do. Aside from the haters. When we look in the mirror and see flaws that come from someone in the past telling us that we have a flaw. What is a question people can start asking themselves? What is the beauty I can see in myself today? What’s the one thing that I really love about my face? What idea can I let go off today that’s stopping me from feeling beautiful? How can I make sure that in my heart, on the inside, I feel good about me? Anything else you want to say? You deserve to feel good about yourself. Links Love Works https://loveworksmethod.com/
After multiple freak-outs in the barber’s chair, Nicole’s “Mom Monster” was tired of yelling at her boy. She tried something new: she took off her monster fangs for a minute and took a fresh look at her son from another angle, paying him a different kind of attention. What she found was empathy for a little boy who couldn’t help that he would freak out when he got his hairs cut. The result? A HUGE parenting turnaround. She even later found herself high-fiving and bonding with her son. Robert points out that Nicole connected with her son, partnered with him, using compassion. Compassion can be a useful tool for connecting with loved ones. In today’s episode of 'I Am the Worst Parent Ever Podcast, Robert and Nicole take the topic one step further to ask, “Where's the compassion for ourselves? Why do we always put ourselves last?” In Robert's opinion, self-compassion has the power to combat the fatigue and self-criticism that so many of us feel. Nicole soaks up positive comments. When someone, somewhere (really anywhere) thinks that she is doing something right, she uses it to combat her gnawing feeling that she is messing up her work, her marriage and, most especially, her kids. In his best moments, Robert admits that he feels proud of everything he is doing but confesses that it's quite easy for him to get overwhelmed with the day-to-day, what Nicole helpfully described as “carrying the weight of the world.” When a single effort with her kids goes bust, Nicole feels like her whole day is blown. Any further opportunity for good mothering is shot. She admits that, like most parents, she gets distracted and anxious. And then she gets down on herself. Robert calls Nicole a “paddler” because no matter what is coming down on her head, she just keeps paddling and moving forward. For Nicole’s part she often wonders, “how is Robert doing all that he is doing?” and was surprised to hear that he doesn’t always feel successful: “I don’t feel like I’m juggling well. I know I’m doing the best that I can. But it’s just overwhelming.” In this episode, we work hard to put our finger on the cause for the anxiety Nicole feels and the energy drops that Robert experiences. We are aware that we are doing the best that we can at any given moment, but doing it over and over can still lead to fatigue. Do we care too much? What happens when a parent gets burned out?

Nicole and I learned to cook out of necessity. For me, it was a choice between going broke on buying expensive meals or cooking my own food. For Nicole, it was starving every mornings or cooking his own food. Forced into such situations, we learned how to cook. We loved it ever since! Share you love for cooking with us or listen to tips on those who’d love to prepare their own food at home.
Perfectionism -- Is it really your fault? Maybe you’re a perfectionist because you just have too many demands to handle. You don’t do enough to take care of yourself. Who could? You just don’t have the time to achieve “balance.” Nicole admits that she could do more to balance out her perfectionism, like taking up mindfulness or learning to meditate. She looks to people like Robert as an example of someone who uses self-care including meditation to balance his perfectionistic tendencies. For Nicole to be as close to the "perfect" wife, mom, daughter, friend, business owner, etc. as she needs, she admits that she mostly operates in "fake it ‘til you make it" mode. In this episode of 'I Am the Worst Parent Ever' podcast, Robert and Nicole talk about feeling like imposters themselves. Your lizard brain can get in your way as a parent, a spouse, an employee, etc. and faking it, is merely a way to push through your fear, take risks, and tell your lizard brain, "not today, buddy." The pressure can get insane. You may be asking, what about "winging it" or "flying by the seat of your pants"? Is that the same as "faking it?" Not exactly… Nicole has gone out on a limb with her article, “I Want You to Fake It.” When you pretend to have more energy than you do or to be kinder than you feel, faking it can actually make you more energetic or kind in the moment. Citing Alexander Spradlin’s Psychology Today article “Fake It ‘Til You Make It,” Nicole suggests that successful people hold a “strong belief in themselves that allows them to persist in the face of failure and to keep trying, no matter their level of fear.” These successful individuals “have an internal drive that tells them that they can succeed, that they have the ability to handle whatever comes their way.” There's a difference between faking it and living a lie, and working towards self-improvement and betterment. Can you say with confidence "I believe I am capable of raising a human being"? How can you choose to become that parent?

If you want to use podcast guesting as a serious marketing strategy, you should listen to this episode. Click the play button below to tune in to the rest of the episode. Don’t forget to subscribe! --- How podcasts helped Nicole establish her personal brand --- For Nicole, it started out as a “marketing arm”. She didn’t really understand podcasts and didn’t know what to expect; she just knew that it was a way for her to get her name out there as well as build relationships with people. It was a way for her to interview people, which she really enjoyed doing, especially when it was people she respected and admired. But what she started finding was that people were resonating with HER. She found that people tune in to podcasts for the host – not the guest – and that’s how you build a very loyal following. Her audience was not listening because she had John Lee Dumas or Bob Burg on the show – it was because of her. Once she realized that, she was able to come out a little bit more, do more solo stuff as well as sponsored episodes. --- Pivot whenever you feel like it. --- She used to think it looked bad. She used to think that because she changed so much, that it’s something that people would look down or judge her on. She sees that a lot of the clients and students she worked with had that same thought process. First of all, it doesn’t matter. That’s taken her a while to really embrace. Actually, she enjoys it more now, because if somebody thinks that her pivoting is not good, then they don’t get to work with her. --- Strategic podcast guestings drive results --- You have to know your own value; you have to know what you want to get out of podcast guesting. A lot of people would tell her, “I want to be on 100 shows.” When asked why, they would say, “because I have a book to launch” or “I want everybody to know my name”, but it doesn’t work like that. Know your value, know what the end goal is, know what you’re selling. If you know that you have this mission and value, you can do podcast guesting. But if you’re going to take it on as a serious marketing strategy and you’re going to invest the time and resources into doing it, then you have to do it right. You have to have something to sell on the backend, and you have to have your sales process in order. Otherwise, you’re just wasting your time and energy. What a great interview with the one and only, Nicole Solari! This mother of three is taking the real estate industry by storm! Along with her fantastic team, they are rising to the top as the number #1 team in their market and #42 in the world. Nicole has a special talent for teaching and passing on her wisdom and I absolutely LOVE that she shared some of it with us! So many first time agents go into this industry looking for flexible hours, more time with family, and a substantial income that will allow them to support those ambitions. What they don’t realize is real estate is not easy; it takes a lot of work. But as Nicole shared, if you are willing to do the work, you will reap the benefits. So where do you start? Many successful agents will tell you their sphere of influence and referrals play a big role in their success, but what if you don’t have a database full of past or prospective clients or excess cash to invest in online lead generation and marketing? For Nicole, she quickly discovered the value of hosting an open house. She offered to hold open houses 4-5 times a week and built her database from potential buyers that walked through the door. The selling agent got a commission and she would gain a handful of leads, which ultimately led to her closing 38 transactions in her first year! WOW! Success in real estate is possible, but having a few tips on where to start can be a game changer! The biggest difference will be your own perseverance and determination. Just like Nicole, you have to always keep your vision at the forefront of your mind and then hit the ground running. It will take work, but it’s not impossible!
