Nayyera has interviewed global leaders and local activists, drawing on years spent in the trenches of the nation's most competitive campaigns and in the halls of government working to resolve global challenges. Nayyera is the rare host with a nuanced understanding of both domestic and international current affairs. Nayyera regularly hosts multiple hours of programming a day on cable television and satellite radio. Nayyera most recently launched and anchored the Black News Channel's two-hour, nightly newscast, The World Tonight. As the network's Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent, Nayyera's editorial lens highlighted the people at the heart of policy and communities caught in conflict. Her versatility as a broadcast host also found her filling in for the network's prime time programs. Prior to her media work, Nayyera served as a Senior Director in the White House helping implement the President's agenda on national security and economic policy. She served in the State Department as a spokesperson explaining U.S. foreign policy to audiences around the world. Nayyera's global experience is based on a foundation of understanding U.S. politics and culture, having spent several years helping Members of Congress connect with their local communities. Overall, Nayyera's work has connected her to nearly all 50 states and 30 countries. As immigrants from Pakistan who settled in Staten Island, New York, Nayyera's parents – a physician and a public school teacher – instilled in her a commitment to public service. From an early age, Nayyera has sought to understand how the American Dream worked for her while others around the world struggle. A traveller by nature and then by profession, Nayyera's explorations have taken her from debates in the U.S. Congress and the Israeli Knesset, to hiking in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, to roaming the streets of London and Lahore. Nayyera received a Masters from Georgetown University Law Center and studied history at the University of Michigan. She lives in Maryland with her veterinarian husband and two kids under five. She wants a dog again but has agreed to wait until the family is done with diapers. Nayyera finds zen while scuba diving, which is not as often as she would like. Abigail Hummel is an administrative specialist for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at her alma mater, the University of Florida - but her day job is the least interesting thing about her. Abigail co-hosts the Pops on Hops podcast with her father, Barry, where they discuss beer, music, and family. Facebook, X, Instagram, YouTube - popsonhopspod.com. She has been an avid performer since childhood - you may have seen her 2001 Super Bowl commercial or her episode of Malcolm in the Middle! - competed in performance and playwriting in high school, and led the student-run Shakespeare in the Park organization in college. She is also passionate about government, worked for the US Census in 2020, and has served as an election worker several times. Nowadays, when she is not working or prepping an album, she is reading for her two book clubs, doing sudoku, or listening to podcasts. "Hey Hey" (a "most" memorable song on Pipes of Peace right?) Everyone! We're back and we did another documentary watch/review this week. And a very emotional/heartwarming one. 1997's In The World Tonight was produced to showcase the making of the now iconic 25 year old LP Flaming Pie. A real return to form for Paul, made in the homespun affair just like 1970's homemade McCartney debut. It also highlights what else Paul was up to during this period. Animated short films, classical composing, becoming knighted and naturally recording at home with Linda and family. We see tremendous footage of Paul alone in the woods with a fire strumming his guitar, contemplating life. As well as golden clips of Paul working with Geoff Emerick, George Martin, Jeff Lynne, Steve Miller. Feeling the enthusiasm of the Beatles Anthology is evident watching Paul here. Couple that with the fact this was the last time we saw/heard dear Linda on a Paul album makes it even that more special. This was originally broadcast in the USA on 16th May 1997 and on 18th May 1997 on ITV in the UK. The "Town Hall Meeting" was not part of the original broadcast and was added in for the home video release which came later in October 1997. One of our favourite "in the making of" films he's done. What say you?

“Woman, life, freedom”Iran has been under a brutal religious dictatorship since 1979 with the overthrow of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and the establishment of the Islamic Republic under Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. There has long been a desire in Iran to return to the days before sharia law. Now, this might be their best chance yet. With the tragic murder of Mahsa Jina Amini. On September 13th, ‘22, Mahsa, a 22 year old Iranian woman, was arrested by the Iranian morality police for the crime of “bad hijab”. Her hair shown in public. For this she was arrested, taken to prison, viciously beaten. She succumbed to her injuries within a few days. Since then, there has been a massive upswell of protesting, rioting and fighting back against the government and its inhumane treatment of the Iranian People. Women refusing to wear their hijabs in public and dancing in the streets in defiance of the brutal regime. Today's guest Kamin Mohammadi helps us understand the context of all of these events and shares with us her lifelong struggles of living in exile, what these protests could mean for the future of Iran and why the worldwide media is not paying attention to such an important movement.Kamin Mohammadi is an author, journalist, broadcaster, editor and public speaker. Khodorkovsky spent nearly ten years in prison. In September 2022 he came to Intelligence Squared to share his unparalleled insight into the inner workings of Putin's regime. Drawing from his new book, The Russia Conundrum, Khodorkovsky reveals how Russia really works and how the West can truly begin to blunt the Kremlin's imperial ambitions. Get his book Go Back To Where You Came From: And, Other Helpful Recommendations on Becoming American which will be published in January 2022 by Norton. He believes in sharing stories that are by us, for everyone: universal narratives told through a culturally specific lens to entertain, educate and bridge the global divides. He frequently appears on television and podcasts for his brilliant, incisive, and witty political commentary. Born in the Bay Area, California to Pakistani immigrant parents, Ali went to school wearing Husky pants and knowing only three words of English. Like Spiderman, he's often had the power and responsibility of being the cultural ambassador of an entire group of people, those who are often marginalized, silenced, or reduced to stereotypes. His essays, interviews, and reporting have appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and New York Review of Books. Ali has spoken at many organizations, from Google to Walmart-Jet to Princeton University to the United Nations to the Chandni Indian-Pakistani Restaurant in Newark, California, and his living room in front of his three kids. Join 5x15 in September to hear about acclaimed biographer Andrea Wulf's thrilling, and timely, story of a group of friends who changed the world in conversation with broadcaster Kirsty Lang. In the 1790s an extraordinary group of friends from the small German town of Jena changed the world. They were the first Romantics, and their ideas transformed society and shaped the way we lead our lives today. In Magnificent Rebels, Andrea Wulf, the Costa Prize-winning author of The Invention of Nature, tells the riveting story of this revolutionary band of poets, novelists and philosophers. Disappointed by the French Revolution's rapid collapse into tyranny, what they wanted was nothing less than a revolution of the mind. And through their epic quarrels, passionate love stories, heart-breaking grief and radical ideas, they launched Romanticism onto the world stage, inspiring some of the greatest thinkers of the time. The lives of these Magnificent Rebels are as relevant today as ever as we, like they, walk the same tightrope between meaningful self-fulfilment and destructive narcissism, between the rights of the individual and our role as a member of our community, and our responsibilities towards future generations who will inhabit this planet. Andrea Wulf was born in India, moved to Germany as a child, and now lives in London. She is the award-winning author of five books. Her previous book, The Invention of Nature, was an international bestseller and won more than 10 awards, including the Royal Society Science Book Award 2016, Costa Biography Award 2015, the Inaugural James Wright Award for Nature Writing 2016 and the LA Times Book Prize 2016. Andrea has written for many newspapers including the Guardian, LA Times and New York Times. She was the Eccles British Library Writer in Residence 2013 and a three-time fellow of the International Center for Jefferson Studies at Monticello. She appears regularly on TV and radio. Kirsty Lang is a writer, broadcaster and former foreign correspondent. A familiar voice on BBC Radio 4 Kirsty has been a presenter on Front Row, The World Tonight and Last Word. This year she took over as the first female host of the fiendishly difficult Round Britain Quiz, the longest running game show in Europe. She is also Chair of the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, Newcastle and a regular contributor to the Sunday Times Culture magazine. With thanks for your support for 5x15 online. Gender bias is everywhere, impacting how we view authority and power around the world. In fact, it's so pervasive—and potentially damaging to organizations—that our guest Mary Ann Sieghart wrote a book about it titled Authority Gap, which explores the critical issue of why women are often taken less seriously than men. This unconscious, double standard behavior affects the C Suite, boardrooms, and conference rooms alike—even the US Supreme Court and UK Parliament. We talk with Mary Ann – journalist, author, non-executive director, and television broadcaster – about why organizations and boards need to change gender bias culture and how to make the critical shift from the top down. It's a thought-provoking conversation well worth the listen for leaders of any gender.
