Just sit there and stew a while with that title. Once you get that out of the way, we got a bit to talk about. The Acolyte just dropped a action packed, death filled episode, and hinted at ties to the sequel trilogy. Eddie Murphy dropping extremely unexpected Shrek news, and HBO gets what MAX didnt! Plus, Sony seems to be abandoning the PSVR 2 already, XBOX wants to make a big splash at Gamescom, and Capcom is bringing Frank West back, again. A ton more so stick around and take a listen.

In this podcast, Tom Hammond, CEO at UserWise, and Sam Abbott, Head of Monetization at Rec Room, discuss how player segmentation can lead to stronger monetization in mobile games. They delve into the importance of understanding individual segments and creating tailored games that appeal to those segments. They also explore how to break down player behavior and analyze actions within the game to better understand and serve different segments."You can't just look at the average. You really need to look at each individual segment and figure out where that segment is finding value in the game." - Sam Abbott (Timestamp: 6:17)"It's not enough just to appeal to a certain segment. You actually have to have a game that is tailored to that segment." - Sam Abbott (Timestamp: 11:03)"In terms of how we think about segmentation, it's really about breaking down player behavior by the actions that they're taking within the game." - Sam Abbott (Timestamp: 14:54)

Just when you thought the fine individuals at SPR industries couldn't make a conversation about the games industry sound even more casual than usual, they strike back with an episode so off-the-cuff that even they aren't quite sure where it's going. This week, Zak and Aaron sit down to discuss the various nuances of the "games as a service model," as well as other oddities like Netflix canceling the "Resident Evil" show, the PS5 price hike, Aaron's enduring hatred of "Rogue One," and the very idea of hate. Microsoft Flight Simulator returns after 6 years of no big titles and this one is a whammy. Microsoft recruits Asobo Studios, known for A Plague Tale most recently. They have built a flight simulator that lets you fly anywhere in the world. Literally anywhere in the world. They used AI technology combined with Bing's mapping system to produce the whole world and place 3D objects on top of flat, satellite imagery. The result is a beautiful journey to anywhere in the world you want to go. We then dive into Rocket Arena and find very quickly it's not a very good game. It was a good attempt but too shallow of a delivery to make it worth anyone's time.In the news, Ubisoft has their next Ubisoft Forward featuring Immortals Fenix Rising, the new name for Gods and Monsters. They also reveal a new game from the creators of Steep called Riders Republic. It now features bikes as part of the gameplay. Nintendo surprised us with a new game called Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. Finally, Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War gives us a taste at what the multiplayer looks like and how it will work with Warzone. Our discussion has us revisit Marvel's Avengers to discuss the online service component of the game. Then it's onto news, they talk about Avengers Review scores and DLC, and they talk about Black Ops Cold War. On this episode, we're talking all about Games as a service with Anthony (@DigitalnCounter), Eric (@ericcginn), Ryan (@ryanthelion3055), and Vincent (@viralvinnie). Is it a good thing that it's become so mainstream? Should developers continue to make them? Should developers, that are known for their single player games, come into the genre? What makes a great Games as a Service game? We talk about Avengers, Destiny, Fortnite, Call of Duty, and even the failures like Anthem. Do you think Games as a service is a good model/genre for a publisher to go into? Sound off in the comments on the YouTube video or Facebook page! This week on The Escapist Show we take a look at the Marvel's Avengers beta and discuss games as a service and how the industry is being bloated by it.
Brett is trying to get caught up on his games and as such he goes back to Call of Duty Modern Warfare to finally beat the single player story. He walks away pleasantly surprised with lots of great moments and lots of intense, real emotional decisions. Austin also jumps back into Final Fantasy 7 Remake to give his update on where he is in the story. In the news, Project Cars 3 gets revealed via a trailer. It looks a lot like Need for Speed now! Kojima had a project canceled but fear not, he's working on something else. Sony announces Game Gear Micro and Dice wraps up their final content for Battlefield V. We also go down a tangent about gaming as an adult and how different people play different ways. Our discussion this week is on the best co-op games with your friends. We jump back in the past and play Borderlands 2 in anticipation of Borderlands 3! It feels so different from 2012...it's way harder! Fortunately, we manage to survive relatively unscathed. In the news, we talk a lot about Gamescom 2019. With new trailers from Avengers, Death Stranding and more, it's a lot of fun stuff to talk about. Apex Legends devs say some not so nice things to toxic gamers and Sony may start offering more multi-platform games. Lastly, we were sad to hear that Gamestop decided to lay off a bunch of employees including 7 key members of Game Informer. We were sad to see them go. Finally, in our discussion we jump in and talk about games as a service games. Inspired by an article in Game Informer, we visit some of the games that are live services and judge their performance over the years. How are they doing since release?
