#717: Clare Flynn Levy was a hedge fund manager in London in the summer of 2007, watching her trading screens turn red — every single day. Merger arbitrage spreads were widening. Investors were pulling out. She didn't yet realize she was watching the early tremors of a global financial crisis. Clare joins us to talk about what that experience taught her about investor behavior, emotional bias, and the hidden forces that drive financial decisions. She now runs a firm that helps professional fund managers analyze their own decision-making patterns. Her core argument: most investors aren't making rational choices. They're rationalizing them. We get into two specific biases that cloud judgment — sunk cost fallacy and the endowment effect — and how they show up whether you're picking individual stocks or rebalancing a 529 plan. Clare shares a personal example. After the 2024 election, she moved her kids' college funds from equities into bonds, recorded her reasoning in her calendar, and came back nine months later to review it honestly. She was wrong. Equities kept climbing. But having a written thesis let her make a clean new decision rather than doubling down out of ego. We also walk through five investor archetypes drawn from behavioral research on fund managers. Connoisseurs let winners run. Raiders take profits too early. Rabbits freeze — or keep buying into a losing position. Hunters wait and take calculated shots. Assassins cut losses cleanly, without emotion. Our guest today is the journalist Anirudhya Mitra. In May 1991, when a former Prime Minister of India was assassinated at Sriperumbudur, Mitra was a young reporter who had joined India Today magazine barely a month earlier. Over the next ninety days, he covered the hunt for Rajiv Gandhi's killers from closer than almost any other journalist in the country — his investigative stories became known as the "inside story" of the assassination. That reporting also made him a target: he was followed, threatened, and publicly branded a CBI agent by both the DMK and the LTTE chief Prabhakaran himself. For thirty years he carried facts he could not put in print. In 2022, he finally wrote them down — in the book that is the subject of today's conversation, Ninety Days: The True Story of the Hunt for Rajiv Gandhi's Assassins.

Update on our week:   Andy and Daniel discuss the Chicago White Sox and their hesitation to sign a new player in Munetaka Murakami despite him having scored over 10 home runs, with 4 being in one game alone. Here is to hoping for a continued good season for the local ball team.   Andy brings up the current JP Morgan lawsuit involving alleged sexual harassment in the workplace. The guys give their take on how this is becoming more common in the workplace often involving the wealthy and people in positions of power.   Daniel beats Assassin's Creed Origins on the PS5, and unfortunately, he did not enjoy it as much as other games within the AC franchise. Noel talks about having beat the 1st game and looking forward to a early sequels, but he has avoided some of the more recent offerings, as they have not been so well received.   Daniel has finally joined the PC Gaming community and started out his gaming journey with GTA IV, using mods that really enhance the look and feel of the game, updating the quality for the modern audience.   Andy and Daniel talk about CM Punk being involved in another incident where 911 emergency services were called. CM Punk pushed an apparent fan who was asking for an autograph which prompted the fan to call the police to press charges against CM Punk.   Noel talks about the new Resident Evil movie teaser trailer and the guys discuss how the previous adaptations have not panned out and the hope for this to be a fresh new start to a better showing for the RE franchise on film.   Noel gives an in-depth review of the new horror movie Hokum, a creepy supernatural movie set in Ireland.
