I played half of the first game back in the day, checked out and never came back. Darby McDevitt is a narrative director and writer at Ubisoft . He's worked on multiple games in the Assassin's Creed franchise, which spans time periods from Ancient Greece to Victorian England. But what does it mean to be a writer on a massive video game where your character is mostly running, climbing, jumping and fighting? The key to his work lies in historical research, but he is sometimes torn between what would actually happen and what pop culture has trained us to expect from different eras of history. We also discuss his new novel, The Halter, which imagines a future where virtual reality is so realistic and addictive that people abandon their real lives and have to be tracked down. I went into this interview a little nervous - because let's be honest, Mariana van Zeller is famously serious. She interviews assassins, drug lords, traffickers, and people living in the darkest corners of the world. I was fully prepared for an intense, heavy conversation. Instead… we laughed. A lot. This episode ended up being funny, warm, surprising, and genuinely joyful - while still being jaw-dropping. Mariana shares what it was like moving to Syria right out of college to become a reporter, the surreal moments of being picked up in the middle of the night, blindfolded, and driven somewhere unknown, and an interview where she wasn't allowed to bring a phone and had no idea where she was going. We also talk about the personal side of a life spent taking massive risks - how her husband and family support her completely, how she manages fear, and what it really takes to walk into dangerous spaces with empathy instead of ego. This conversation reminded me that the bravest people aren't hardened - they're human, curious, and often unexpectedly funny. With Assassin's Creed Shadow sales numbers still a mystery, it's obvious that Ubisoft might be in some trouble. Investors are becoming very vocal with their concerns and direction of the company. Some are even suggesting a company restructuring. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has plans to focus on Ubisoft's Big 3 (Assassin's Creed, Rainbow Six, and Far Cry) to turn things around for the studio, but will this be enough?

This week we talk about A Ninja and an Assassin Under One Roof. We joke about it being not exactly kid-friendly, talk about how side characters get introduced and immediately die for anyone who is not a MC, and we get weirdly invested in the “rules” behind the cleanup powers once the show finally reveals limits. We also talk about how the assassin is frugal with their money but also at the same time they are really messy. We cann't help but laugh at how the series undercuts heartfelt moments with absurd gags including the whole robot-replacement scenario. By the end, we land on it being watchable and it is entertaining in bursts, although it is a little slow at times, and it leaves some plot holes and unfinished plot lines. About the anime:Satoko is an unwitting runaway ninja with basically zero survival skills, and when she's about to starve until she runs into Konoha, a normal-looking high school girl, steps in and helps her out. The twist is, Konoha isn't normal at all, she's actually an assassin. Thanks to Satoko's unique skill and high luck they strike up a deal. Satoko gets a roof over her head, food and a little money, while Konoha gets help cleaning up the evidence after jobs, because Satoko's ninjutsu can conveniently turn things into leaves and make problems disappear, and a live-in house keeper. Meanwhile, Satoko's old ninja world won't let her just vanish quietly, so their daily lives keeps getting interrupted by all the other ninjas showing up at the worst times.
