President Trump announced Friday morning that authorities have a suspect in custody believed to be responsible for the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The major development comes just hours after officials pleaded with the public for help in tracking down the killer and released new footage showing a suspect fleeing the roof of a campus building. Kirk was fatally shot while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday afternoon.

The man allegedly responsible for the death of Charlie Kirk has been identified as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson. Robinson, a Utah native, is in custody for the killing of the influential Trump ally following an extensive manhunt and the release of new video and images of a “person of interest.” Washington County officials reportedly received a tip from a family friend of Robinson that implicated him in Kirk's death. Agé de 31 ans, star des réseaux sociaux et du mouvement MAGA, il avait joué un rôle prépondérant dans le ralliement d'une partie de la jeunesse américaine à Donald Trump, avec ses discours pro-armes, contre l'avortement ou l'immigration coupables, selon lui, coupables de mettre en péril l'Amérique blanche.Très vite, le président des Etats-Unis a pris la parole mercredi pour saluer en Charlie Kirk, un « martyr de la vérité et de la liberté », et incriminé la « gauche radicale » sans que l'on ne connaisse ni le mobile, ni l'identité du tueur. Pour faire avancer l'enquête, le FBI a lancé un appel à témoins, sur la base de plusieurs vidéos diffusées hier, montrant un homme svelte portant des vêtements sombres, avec un pull à manches longues arborant le drapeau américain, des lunettes de soleil et une casquette. La police a également annoncé une récompense pouvant aller jusqu'à 100 000 dollars pour toute information en lien avec l'enquête.La chasse à l'homme s'est intensifiée ce vendredi aux Etats-Unis pour retrouver le meurtrier de Charlie Kirk. Selon les propos de Donald Trump, un suspect aurait été interpellé grâce à la dénonciation d'une personne « très proche de lui ». Le président a notamment expliqué que le père du suspect lui-même ainsi qu'un pasteur avaient joué un rôle dans cette arrestation.Cette annonce intervient dans un pays sous le choc et très fracturé. Si la classe politique américaine est unanime pour condamner cet assassinat et déplorer le regain de violence politique aux Etats-Unis, républicains et démocrates s'accusent mutuellement d'en être responsables, et certains analystes s'inquiètent déjà d'une volonté de vengeance des militants pro Trump. L'ancien président Joe Biden a appelé à ce que cette violence « cesse immédiatement ». Donald Trump, de son côté, a appelé ses fidèles à la retenue et à la non-violence. Parallèlement, le locataire de la Maison-Blanche a annoncé ce vendredi déployer des militaires de la Garde nationale à Memphis, dans le Tennessee, dans le cadre de sa lutte contre la criminalité ciblant des grandes villes démocrates du pays. « Nous allons à Memphis. Memphis est profondément en difficulté. Le maire est heureux, c'est un maire démocrate (…) Nous allons régler ça comme nous l'avons fait à Washington », a déclaré le président américain dans une interview à la chaîne Fox News.
