"We do not just benefit from using and partaking of our humanity. We have a certain kind of divine and natural entitlement to employing our complement for the betterment of our human flourishing in a way that is consistent with the nature of our existence…"— James Poulos The present-day power of digital communications technology is changing everything from politics to our identity in the most fundamental ways, compelling us to leave our humanity behind. So, what can we do to turn this around and save the rights that we still have left? James Poulos is the Executive Editor of The American Mind, the Claremont Institute's online publication devoted to driving the conversation about the ideas and principles that drive American political life. His most recent book, HUMAN, FOREVER The Digital Politics of Spiritual War, shows how the swarm of programs and devices unleashed by our leaders has transformed our lives and defied our dreams, throwing the future into a terrifying doubt. On this episode of The Wiggin Sessions, James joins me to walk us through how the unscrupulous digital age and the drive towards socialization are attempting to destroy not just Western culture but also the very tenants of our humanity. But there is hope. James says, "If enough of us kind of remember who we are, put one foot in front of the other, find each other and do what Americans have always done, which is associate freely and build institutions that work under the circumstances, I think we're going to be okay." Listen in to understand why James thinks the time is NOW for Americans 'to take control and use these digital foundations to sidestep broken systems and create new institutions that serve us, rather than the other way around.' Key Takeaways Why the intersection of AI, social media, and digital communications is powerful enough to change the fabric of our very culture James walks us through how the new media landscape is changing how we view everything from politics to ourselves James defines what he refers to as 'surplus elites' How the revolving door between the government and the Fed's overprinting of money is devaluing what's left of our constitutional rights Why it's vital to prepare our children for the normal rites of passage and embed in them that being human is GOOD How questions that can only be answered through theology are ushering in a return to religious sensibility in the US and abroad James shares why it's our ‘patriotic duty' to take active responsibility for managing our digital lives in the fight for the future of not just America but humanity as we know it How we can 'use digital foundations to sidestep broken systems and create new institutions that serve us, rather than making us serve them" Connect with James Poulos James on Twitter Connect with Addison Wiggin Consilience Financial Be sure to follow The Wiggin Sessions on your socials. Why was it a mistake to focus so much on practicing long field goals and how did that affect his performance in games? What was it like to lose his starting job? What did that teach Brion about mistakes in our careers? Other topics and questions: Lessons from practicing wrong? Not evaluating the misses? Are you looking for your confidence and clarity to do the things that you value the most? Are you struggling to find time or money to show up and make a difference? Chris Field and Lantz Howard dive into a conversation about changing your world and why we need to see failure as an opportunity. Chris is the Founder of MercyProject.net and author of the new book A Billion Hours of Good: How to Change Your World 14 Minutes at a Time. Chris was adrift, depressed, and gaining weight when he realized that he was not living in alignment with his best gifts. Since that time Chris and Mercy Project have rescued and reintegrated 181 child slaves from Ghana, Africa. Chris debunks the myth about why we don't give up our time and money more often in order to show up in the world and make a difference. Grab a copy of the book and begin to clarify your best YES so you can say no to the noise and gluttony that modern life offers. You are a champion and others need your presence to offer hope. "A billion hours is equivalent to 114,000 years. That's how much good we're going to do together. Just 14 minutes at a time. You don't need more money, or time, or even another election cycle to bring transformational change to your community. What you need is to believe that daily microdoses of good over years and years can create a great return. Stop waiting for the big change moment and seize the good that you can do today. Join Chris in pledging 1 percent of your time (14 minutes a day) to make the world a better place. Learn how to solve old problems in new ways, and walk with Chris as he shows you how he started Mercy Project-a nonprofit committed to ending child trafficking in Ghana. See how compassion and care can serve as rocket fuel for deep courage and untapped creativity. Our responsibility in a world filled with suffering is to care, show up, and act. Not once, not twice, but a little bit every day for the rest of our lives. Accept this invitation and join a global movement for extraordinary good. Impossible alone. Transformational together." Wow. This book came at just the right time for me. In fact, it is probably just the right time for our world. I found myself smiling and nodding as I quickly turned page after page. Chris Field inspires through excellent story-telling but also provides a practical blueprint for us all to follow to create A Billion Hours of Good 14 minutes at a time. I want to share this book with everyone. ―Terri Dorsey, Director of Executive Development, Boys & Girls Clubs of America In A Billion Hours of Good, Chris pilots a metaphorical lawnmower. He clears a path by anticipating excuses and mowing them over. Chris started with my heart and then nimbly made his way into the part of my brain that too easily generates retorts-and in that very spot he worked his magic. Using pragmatism and relatable stories, Chris showed me I am capable of doing hard things, motivated me to do hard things, and helped me believe in my ability to make a meaningful impact in the world-in just 14 minutes a day. ―Corey Oliver, Former Senior HR leader at Nike and Deloitte -- You can find out more about Lantz Howard at ChampionHope.com and schedule your free Ask Lantz Anything at ChampionHope.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/champion-hope/support

A short and sweet episode for you this week. Inspired by my love of the Great British Sewing Bee I wanted to talk a little bit about upcycling and recycling. We are very lucky in the UK to have access to a wide variety of different fabrics and I do love to create garments from new fabrics but it hasn’t always been this way and from necessity comes creativity. During World War 2 for example the Make Do and Mend campaign encouraged house wives to create garments from curtains, parachutes and even their husbands clothes. But now there is a new nuance added to the equation - the environment. We are becoming more aware of the impact waste and we each have a role to play in trying to ensure that we minimise our contribution to landfill. So learning to upcycle and consciously recycle is a fantastic way to do our bit. In this episode you will hear:> A few reasons why you should consider upcycling> Some different approaches to getting started upcycling> Some inspiration from the recent Reduce, Re-use and Recycle episode of the Great British Sewing Bee and how you can try it too!Useful links and resourcesSo I have a lot of links and resources for you this week to explore and enjoy.> Hand & Lock: Article Upcycling through the ages> Circular Online: Article on UK Contribution to textile waste> Roberta Style Lee Article: 5 of the best apps and websites for selling preloved clothes in the UK> Other Websites and apps to sell clothes or buy second hand> Vinted> Gumtree> Shpock> Ebay> Fashion Revolution - resources and how to video tutorials on upcycling> Well and Good: How to upcycle clothes you will actually want to wear> Paper Michey: Turning trousers into a crop wrap top> The Sorry Girls: Fall Fashion Hacks and upcycles including a fabulous silk bomber jacket from a silk shirt> Sarah Tyau: Playlist of videos on hacks and refashion ideasI'd love to see your upcycle successes so DM me or tag @sewmuchmorefun on your Instagram posts of your creations. My guest today is the one and only Dr. Charles Spence, professor of experimental psychology and Head of the Crossmodal Research Laboratory at the Department of Experimental Psychology at Oxford University. He is a Gastrophysicists working at the interface between chefs, food companies and technology.Charles is passionate about how people perceive the world around them. In particular, how our brains manage to process the information from each of our different senses to form the extraordinarily rich multisensory experiences that fill our daily lives. His research focuses on how a better understanding of the human mind will lead to the better design of multisensory foods, products, interfaces, and environments in the future.Charles has published more than 500 articles in top scientific journals, and have been awarded many prestige psychology prices. In this episode,Dr. Charles Spence and I discuss the ins and outs of Sonic seasoning: When Food, Sound & Neuroscience intertwine to create the perfect food and drink experience.Full Episode 17: Sonic seasoning: Eating with your ears. 在商店试衣服的时候经常听女孩子之间说: “Oh, this is cute”,or “You look cute in it.” You're so lovely."How are you? 出于礼貌会加一句How about you?回答也都是Good, Great, No complaints之类。 What's up? What's new? 比较常用的说法是:I'm taking(药的种类或者名字)。 For here or to go?

What's new? 比较常用的说法是:I'm taking(药的种类或者名字)。 For here or to go?

Peter is the founding partner of Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre in Melbourne and Professor of Sports Medicine at LaTrobe University. A founding Executive Member of the Australasian College of Sports Physicians, he served two terms as President and played a key role in establishing sports medicine as a medical specialty in Australia. Peter is the co-author of the widely used text book Clinical Sports Medicine and has been team physician for professional football clubs as well as national athletics, swimming, soccer and men's hockey teams including Olympic and Commonwealth Games. Peter was the Socceroos Team Doctor at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and subsequently became Head of Sports Medicine and Sports Science at Liverpool Football Club. He is the co-founder of the public health campaign SugarByHalf and is committed to the challenge of improving the nation's health with improved diet and increased physical activity. His most recent book A Fat Lot of Good was published in May 2018.Living and working in Liverpool, UK in 2012, Dr Peter says that he has a strong family history of Type 2 diabetes. Despite being borderline obese with a BMI of 30, blood tests showing he had a fatty liver, he still considered himself to be in good health, doing the right thing with eating low fat foods and exercising. It was through his long standing academic friendship with Prof Tim Noakes, that he read Gary Taube's ‘Good Calories Bad Calories' that challenged the idea of the low fat diet. Embarking on his own journey, reading and self experimentation, Dr Brukner was able to see first hand the impact of eating real food. He lost weight, more energy, mentally sharper as went from eating three meals and three snacks to two meals and a small snack of a handful of nuts. Blood tests showed that his fatty liver had resolved and was completely normal. Frustrated by the mixed messages in the public space, he wanted a platform to campaign for dietary change. He founded the not-for-profit organisation ‘Sugar By Half' as a public health campaign to promote and advocate for healthier eating by reducing sugar consumption. He authored ‘A Fat Lot of Good', a best seller book which provides an engaging and easily accessible approach to eating real food. In episode 26, Rhod looks at the impact Artificial Intelligence (AI) is going to have on philanthropy and civil society. Topics covered include:   -What are we talking about? We look at what AI actually means and why it has come to prominence in recent years, and consider 3 broad ways in which AI is going to affect civil society. -AI for Good: How is AI being put to use to deliver social and environmental benefits, and where could this go in the future? We touch on fascinating projects using machine learning for medical research and environmental protection, and explore the use of chatbots and voice-activated assistants. -The wider operating environment: AI seems set to disrupt the way that organisations, and even entire industries, operate. Civil society organisations could harness the benefits of automation, but will also need to address the wider challenges that it poses to the future of the workplace. Regulation could also be transformed, and CSOs will have to adapt. And the ways in which we are able to give in the future might look radically different. -Negative consequences of AI: We are now aware that AI poses risks as well as opportunities, and civil society seems certain to play a role in addressing many of these new challenges. We explore the dangers of algorithmic bias and the growing tide of fake news and targeted propaganda- including the emergence of “deepfakes”. We also look at the ways in which interaction with AI could affect human behaviour and the challenges this might pose.   Related Content -Machine-Made Goods: Philanthropy, civil society and artificial intelligence (forthcoming discussion paper, so watch out for it on our Future:Good pages)   -CAF Submission to House of Lords Select Committee on AI Call for Evidence    -"Where are Charities in the Great AI Debate", World Economic Forum blog   -Civil Society article on charities and AI ethics   -5 ways AI is already having an impact on charity   -Robotic Alms: Is AI the future of philanthropy advice?   -Future Imperfect: 10 new problems that technology will create and charities will have to deal with   -Automatic for the People: What might a philanthropy algorithm look like?
