In Episode 59 of Rolling Home titled, "The beauty and sufficiency of boondocking," I discussed why RVing and van life appeal to campers like me such as the boondocking aspect of it. That's because boondocking returns campers to a simpler time when self-sufficiency was essential for successful living. I didn't say much about the health benefits of RVing, and in my case, the self-sufficiency aspect of RV boondocking has on a person's health. Because no matter how big or small of a rig you travel in there is some aspect of self-sufficiency, right? But RVing and van camping have many great health benefits, as Paul Hemphill of RV Korner reminds us in his insightful article! Show notes

Welcome dear listeners to another lifestyle podcast on health matters. Today I am going to discuss a fitness product from the German sports company called „Sport Thieme“. I have also included in this podcast a video that you, the listener can see how I tested this product from every exercise angle imaginable: squats, splits, forward bends etc. I will give you the test results towards the end of this podcast as well as discuss the health benefits of the training bar. But first of all let us discuss what this fitness device is. We call it a steel padded weight rod. This rod weighs 8 kgs which is about 18 pounds. Length: 122 cm, ø 30-37 mm. The men's so-called Olympic Weightlifting Bar, used in standard men's weightlifting competitions, weighs 20 kg, or 45lb. While the women's version weighs 15kg or 33lb. So, what I wanted to test is the 8 kg which normally is not recommended for beginners. In that case they should use a 2kg bar. The challenge was to test how far one could use an 8kg rod for different types of exercises which would normally not be done in a regular gym. I noticed as I was doing theses exercises my regular movements were slower and more carefully performed as usual. I had to use more stamina and some elasticity was limited, for example the "air lifts" had to be adjusted accordingly so as not to damage my back or ligaments. It is recommended to wear training gloves to support the wrists and also a weight belt to avoid any damage to your lower back. I am not wearing a belt in this video but I was aware that some of my usual movements were limited to avoid any unnecessary damage. Remember, 8 kgs is not something to take lightly. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bronwyn59/message

When we think about the concept of health as a whole, few subjects come to mind quicker than that of nutrition. The food we eat can either act as medicine which allows us to live out our full potential or poison that will force us into the throes of dis-ease as our body attempts to perform its processes without high quality food. The challenge in the modern day however, is that, along with there being a surplus of bad quality food & misinformation on what food is & how to optimize our diet as individuals, many of our guts are now compromised from the fore mentioned reasons, along with chemicals such as glyphosate, which wreak havoc upon our gut & overall health as human beings. You might ask yourself, at this point, what you could do to effectively keep your gut in tip top shape & ensure you are receiving every last drop out of nutrition out of your food & these subjects & more are exactly what I am so thrilled to speak about with todays guest. As a business owner, wife, mother, and professor, Nadine Kenney Johnstone was busy! She thought she was doing everything right for her health until she found the power of yoga nidra. Before discovering this type of meditation, she ate nourishing, healthy foods, got good sleep, and exercised. But, she still felt she wasn't at her best and she saw her relationships weren't at their optimum, either. She felt distracted and like she wasn't fully present with the two people she loves most in the world: her husband and her son. She wanted to change that, she wanted to embrace each moment of life fully for herself and her loved ones, and continue doing great work with her clients. How Nadine found yoga nidra and deep rest: That was when she found yoga nidra. Yoga nidra is a Sanskrit term that refers to a meditation practice which induces deep, conscious relaxation. It's been scientifically proven that one hour of yoga nidra is the equivalent of several hours of sleep! It profoundly impacted Nadine. Soon she was prioritizing rest, which led her to actually being more productive and creative in her work. In fact, yoga nidra was so helpful for her that she wanted to share the message with others and she became a certified yoga nidra instructor. She practices it with all of her clients, whether virtually or in person at her writing retreats. How Nadine supports women writers: Nadine talks more about what it's been like to host retreats since the pandemic and what she includes in her retreats. She holds an MFA in Fine Arts, has taught English and creative writing at the university level, and is a published author. When she began presenting at conferences many of the attendees would seek her advice, and that led her to shepherding women writers through the writing process. She now works with women writers as they craft their pages, find an agent and/or a publisher or helps them self-publish, and also through the launch phase of their book. “I love talking about journaling so I'm a writer and a writing coach; I help women, develop and publish their books.” More About Nadine's writing retreats: This also led her to create writing retreats. Although they were held virtually in the initial stages of the pandemic, they are back in person now and she notices some similarities in the women who attend. “We had an in person retreat in November and the women who came to it were working women who just felt like they couldn't juggle it at all, and they couldn't handle it all. Not because they're not completely competent, but because we can only hold so much.” “They were coming in feeling very overwhelmed and completely exhausted mentally - the pandemic lead to great decision fatigue. Every decision felt like life or death, so they were just completely decision- fatigued, mentally fatigued.” Nadine goes on to explain how women ultimately change their lives at the end of her retreats: “By the end it's this real game changer where the women feel so good that they go, I have to live my life, a different way.” In this podcast, we cover: - What brain wave state is the “super power of yoga”?One trick to remind yourself you don't always have to be productive. - Where should you turn when you feel your life is missing something? - What it means to surrender and why it is valuable. - How can you use anchors to return to a state of peace? - What is a Sankalpa and how do you use it in yoga nidra? - How journaling can support you in achieving deep rest. She also explains the need for rest and why we often have no problem running for 25 minutes on a treadmill, but it's much more of a challenge for us to spend 25 minutes in a meditative practice like yoga nidra. Finally, Nadine walks us through the stages of yoga nidra, and we dive deep into the topics of surrender and being deeply rested (and why it's more than just getting adequate sleep). Join Jonathan and Wade Lightheart today as he helps us understand enzymes. What they do, why they're considered micro miracles, and how your health depends on them. Plus, Wade helps us understand what we want to look for in a supplement. You don't want to miss this one!   About Wade Lightheart 3-Time Canadian All Natural Bodybuilding Champion who competed as vegetarian, former Mr. Universe Competitor, host of The Awesome Health podcast, Wade Lightheart is one of the world's premier authorities on Natural Nutrition and Training Methods. Having majored in Sports Science at the University of New Brunswick, he has authored numerous books on health, nutrition and exercise which have sold in over 80 countries. Wade also serves as an advisor to the American Anti-Cancer Institute. He's been in the health industry for over 25 years, coached thousands of clients, and is sought out by athletes and high-performance oriented individuals worldwide for his advice on how to optimize their health and fitness levels.   What Are Enzymes? ENZYME – noun BIOCHEMISTRY a substance produced by a living organism which acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction. There are approximately 25,000 different enzymatic functions in the body The number of enzymes that you have present in your body is directly proportion to the amount of chemical reactions that you can engage in in the body. The difference between stones, plants, and people is enzymes, the amount and the role of those enzymes. They are the most critical component to all metabolic transactions.   Enzyme Bank It's like having a bank account. In other words, your ability to write metabolic checks, to build, to repair, to heal, to digest your food, to make your hormones work, to break down the smallest chemical reactions, to make your skin nice, you name it, requires an enzymatic pathway.   Our Current Food Supply is Lacking In today's world, we've radically compromised the amount of enzymes that we're getting from our food, the quality of those enzymes, and we've added a host of agents that actually interrupt our body's natural enzymatic mechanisms and that is having consequences across the globe that are extremely dire.   Pottenger & His Cats Francis Pottenger, Jr, MD, has given the cat world one of the best books available in the study of carnivore's nutrition. From 1932 to 1942, Dr. Francis Marion Pottenger Jr. conducted a group of experiments to determine the effects of heat-processed food on cats. Cats fed an all-raw diet were healthy while cats fed the cooked meat diet developed various health problems. At the time of Pottenger's studies the heat labile amino acid taurine had not yet been identified as essential for cats. This work shows that the deficiencies Pottenger identified in cats correspond with those of a taurine deficiency and are the direct result of the lack of taurine in the feline diet. The physiological effects of a cooked diet described by Pottenger in his papers were compared with data from recent studies on taurine deficiency in the feline diet. Results. Pottenger's main observations of near and far sightedness, cardiac lesions, increased stillbirth, low birthweight, poor kitten survival, and developmental abnormalities each correspond to published descriptions of taurine deficiency in cats with multiple references for each described condition. Taurine deficiency is a strong explanation for the symptoms observed by Pottenger in his cat studies. Pottenger's own conclusion that there was an ‘as yet unidentified, heat-labile protein factor' is realized in taurine.   4 Major Types of Enzymes There are four major categories of enzymes and then there are derivatives of each, Proteases which break down protein, lipase which breaks down fats, amylase which breaks down carbohydrates, and cellulase which breaks down fiber in plants.   What happens if I don't have the protease in my body to break down the all the protein that I'm ingesting? Gas Bloating Skin problems Brain fog The reason? Because you're feeding bad bacteria who are producing a variety of endotoxins inside the body that are interrupting your natural activity.   Disturbing Statistics from Wade's Research In America today, 12% of the emergency hospital visits are related to gastrointestinal related illnesses. People going to the hospital in an ambulance because they're not breaking down their food.   A third of the population is suffering from digestive illness on any given day. And about 25% of the population is on prescription meds for this. And the correlation between digestive disease and depression and challenges for brain function, because most of your neurotransmitters are built off amino acids that got to be broken down and transported from the gut to your brain is directly correlated with the lack of enzymes.   What to look for in an enzyme supplement? In other words, your ability to write metabolic checks, to build, to repair, to heal, to digest your food, to make your hormones work, to break down the smallest chemical reactions, to make your skin nice, you name it, requires an enzymatic pathway.   What is a PROTEOLYTIC enzyme? also called protease, proteinase, or peptidase, any of a group of enzymes that break the long chainlike molecules of proteins into shorter fragments (peptides) and eventually into their components, amino acids. Proteolytic enzymes are present in bacteria, archaea, certain types of algae, some viruses, and plants; they are most abundant, however, in animals. The two major groups are the exopeptidases, which target the terminal ends of proteins, and the endopeptidases, which target sites within proteins.   What to Look for in an Enzyme Supplement Loaded up with proteolytic enzymes Make sure it covers the various pH levels of digestion; 3.0, 4.5 & 6.0 Contains amylase to break down your carbohydrates Contains alpha galactosidase, which will help break down some of the sugars that you will find in food Contains glucoamylase, another one that'll cover the different range of sugars that you might consume inadvertently Invertase, maltase, to help with hidden sugars that cause interruptions and metabolic problems and blood sugar issues Contains lipase to break down fats Contains phytase to break down plant fibers Contains hemicellulose and the cellulase, which will actually break down those difficult proteins that are actually a fibrous protein Contains lactase for people that can't digest milk (it's because they don't produce lactase) Contains AstraZyme™ to bolster all the benefits Enzymes are cultured     What is AstraZyme™ We studied Chinese medicine and found out there is a particular root, called the astragalus root, that is used in almost every single Chinese compound. When we found out why it was used, that it turns out that that particular root actually activates and accelerates, it increases the potential of the enzymatic response. So, we took that extract through this into that formulation as well and precise dosages. And that gave a 30 to 60% boost depending on the enzyme and its effectiveness.   What is a Cultured Enzyme? A cultured enzyme means this is an enzyme grown on a very specific medium that allows you to increase the potency over a normal enzyme from 100 to 1000 times. This process takes about eight weeks to get that kind of potency. So just like if you were fermenting beer or wine or something, you've got to let it work for a period of time before you get that premium spirit. It's the exact same process inside of the enzyme formula. We're fermenting and creating a specific medium and then extracted enzymes.  No chemicals are used in the extraction process. So, you just get the pure working enzymes to deliver an incredible result.   What happens if I don't have the protease in my body to break down the all the protein that I'm ingesting? Gas Bloating Skin problems Brain fog The reason? Because you're feeding bad bacteria who are producing a variety of endotoxins inside the body that are interrupting your natural activity. Did you know that over 12% of emergency room hospital visits are related to gastrointestinal disorders? Recent research suggests digestion issues affect over 100 million people per day in the United States alone. And many of these people are using over-the-counter or prescription medications to combat the distress, pain and social embarrassment related to digestive problems. Unfortunately, many of the common treatments and prescriptions are actually compounding digestive dysfunction with unintended complications, over time treating symptoms, but not the root cause. Digestive health information, digestive health diets, and products are some of the fastest growing trends in the health high performance industry. And today I'm talking to Wade Lightheart. He is an author, athlete and nutritionist and specializes on fixing digestion. Make sure it's at least half full of proteolytic enzymes and you want at least three proteases. The 3.0 the 4.5 and the 6.0 which relate to the spectrum within the pH band. You want to make sure it has up in that that range of like 70-80,000 HUT (One FCC HUT unit of proteolytic (protease) activity is defined as that amount of enzyme that produces, in one minute under the specified conditions, a hydrolysate whose absorbance at 275nm is the same as that of a solution containing 1.10 g per mL of tyrosine in 0.006N hydrochloric acid.
