Hanging with Our Ancestors: Luke Fannin on Climbing, Evolution & Ape LocomotionEver wondered why kids instinctively love monkey bars? Or why apes move so deliberately in the trees? In this episode of Talking Apes, biological anthropologist Luke Fannin takes us on a journey through the evolution of climbing, exploring how primates, from ancient hominins to modern chimps, have adapted to life in the canopy.Luke breaks down the surprising biomechanics of climbing up vs. climbing down, revealing why descending may have played a bigger role in human evolution than we ever imagined. We'll also uncover how playgrounds, rock climbers, and even early tool-making tie into our primate past. It's a fascinating deep dive into movement, survival, and the hidden connections between our everyday actions and our evolutionary history.Explore Luke's publications on his Google Scholar profile.Read Luke's article: The Surprisingly Scientific Roots of Monkey BarsSend us a textSupport the showTalking Apes is an initiative of the nonprofit GLOBIO. Gene writes “I was around 13 or 14. It was about the third weekend of November. I know this because I was deer hunting. We were on land belonging to Peabody coal company in Muhlenberg county. At that time was 62,000 acres of reclaimed coal land. It was around 4 pm. I was standing in a field looking north, my father had went down a holler to the west of me. I heard my father shoot three times. This was strange because he always shot once and a deer was down. I then moved to the mouth of the holler to see if any deer would be running my direction. I then started to hear people talking, I could not understand what was being said, but I could hear it. I thought well dad is talking to someone and has killed a deer. I proceeded to head down the holler to help him.The holler was open hard woods and you could see a long ways, except for right at the bottom where a intermediate stream was. I got about 50 yards from the brush when two animals busted out of it running straight at me. They were covered with long reddish brown hair about three inches long and were knuckle walking like a great ape. They were about four feet at the shoulder and their hips were lower than their shoulders and knees. Their faces were flat and I saw no ears. They were chattering to each other or something else and that was the voices I heard “talking”. While at this time in my life I did believe in Bigfoot, since my father was a long haul truck driver and another truck driver had claimed a Bigfoot had run behind my dads truck near the Kentucky-Tennessee line, but for me Bigfoot was single creature that walked up right. Anyway, these two animals are running straight at the 13/14 year old me and I do not know what they are.I yank my 30:06 rifle up and fire. I do not think I even aimed, just shot towards them. When I did this there was a big noise behind me and I remember thinking “ they have me surrounded” I spun around to defend myself and saw a squirrel running up a hickory tree right beside me. I spun back around to the threat I knew and they had already crossed the brush bottom and was halfway up the ridge on the other side and I shot at them once more as they run off. They very fast. Once I meet up with my father, he confirmed that he had also shot at these creatures, but was shook up enough to have missed three times. We tried to convince ourselves that these were some sort of wolf and lived under that delusion for many years, until I began studying primates on an academic level, did I let myself believe what I know to be true all along. One thing that scares me to this day is the thought of were they chattering to each other or to mom or dad that was near by that I never saw. I have hunted that area since I was 12 and I just turned 50 this year and I have never set foot in that holler again.”

In a groundbreaking discovery, scientists have observed a male orangutan, Rakus, using plants as medicine—a first-ever recording of a wild animal self-medicating for wound care. This unique behavior was spotted in the jungle, where Rakus chewed the stem and leaves of a plant known for its anti-inflammatory properties and applied it to his injured cheek. The wound, likely caused by a territorial fight, healed within a month. What makes this finding extraordinary is its implications for both orangutans and humans. Dr Isabelle Laumer, the lead researcher and guest on our latest Talking Apes episode, highlights how Rakus' actions could offer insights into the evolutionary roots of self-medication in primates, possibly tracing back to a common ancestor. Her research opens up questions about how much orangutans—and perhaps other great apes—might already know about medicinal plants in their environment.Join us for this special Orangutan Caring Week episode to explore how this discovery reshapes our understanding of primate intelligence, behavior, and our shared evolutionary past. Then after a fossil hunting dry spell, his 9-year-old son Matthew found the jawbone of an entirely new hominid species.A few years later came Lee's most extraordinary discovery yet: a nearly inaccessible cave filled with skeletons of another new hominid species which seemed to be violating all the rules. The story of what happened in this cave revolutionises what we understand about the origins of our own human species. This episode of Conversations discusses the origin of human life, archaeology, science, research, caving, adventure, Indiana Jones, human species, evolution, Charles Darwin, theories of evolution, Africa.

“So it's a very special experience because you're suddenly connecting to a species which you feel you know. The gorilla looks at you and you look at them and there's a very strong rapport. A kind of connection saying, ‘Haven't we seen each other before?'” We're in great company with Praveen Moman, the pioneer in Great Ape tourism, celebrating the 25th Anniversary of his conservation and ecotourism brand, Volcanoes Safaris, where he has been at the forefront of reviving the post-conflict Uganda and Rwanda - centered around his five luxury lodges and safari experiences near the threatened gorilla and chimpanzee populations. A ‘visionary conservationist' with numerous awards and recognitions, Praveen followed in his family's footsteps - first pitching a tent in the wild and now 25 years later, developing lodges that are sensitive to local culture and aesthetics, and connected to the local community and conservation projects. In this episode, Praveen shares his personal love for his homeland, his professional admiration for Dian Fossey and Jane Goodall, and Volcanoes Safaris' commitment to the protection of these safari experiences for generations to come. Top Takeaways [1:40] Praveen Moman's childhood was unlike most yet instrumental to the man he is today. Listen as he shares his appreciation for his British education, Indian heritage and East African environment.  [10:10] First impressions are lasting impressions - especially when it comes to your first encounter with a gorilla, as Praveen learned many years ago. [15:00] To understand the positive impact Volcanoes Safaris has on the gorilla population, local economy and broader ecosystem, one must first understand the history of human interaction with the Great Ape - from initial discovery to respected research to conservation tourism - and how this model could be replicated across other destinations at risk of over-tourism.  [30:30] What started as temporary tents turned into luxury lodge accommodations, built in an instinctual way with local materials melded in a way that showed the ingenuity of the minds of their local makers.  [31:50] With 3 lodges near the mountain gorilla parks (Virunga Lodge in Rwanda, Bwindi Lodge and Mount Gahinga Lodge in Uganda) and 2 lodges focused on the chimpanzees (Kyambura Gorge Lodge and Kibale Lodge in Uganda) - each lodge is delicately balanced with what the local cuisines, cultures and traditions are, with what is palatable to an international guest. [45:30] With 98% of our DNA identical to that of gorillas, we have a duty to ensure their survival alongside ours.   Notable Mentions First gorilla sighting by German, Robert von Beringe in 1902 Creation of the national park in 1925 inspired by American, Carl Akeley Research by biologist, George Schaller  Primatologists and conservationists, Dian Fossey and Jane Goodall Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund Gorilla Doctors Conservation Through Public Health Jane Goodall Institute  Adventure Travel Trade Association Visit For Yourself Volcanoes Safaris Website  Volcanoes Safaris YouTube Videos @volcanoes_safaris Stay In Good Company Website

[School of Movies 2024] Fixed the title on this one, to both distinguish it from 2021s Godzilla vs. Kong, AND to give the rightful prominence to the Great Ape whose movie this most definitely is. Willow suggested the original title would be as misleading as "Loki x Thor: Ragnarok". This is my favourite of the new MonsterVerse films, by a narrow margin, considering Godzilla II: King of the Monsters is still absolutely magnificent. Just like that 2019 entry, it's also one of my favourite films of the year, for reasons I will elaborate upon in depth here. And what can they reveal about human evolution?  Join us on World Chimpanzee Day for a journey into the heart of the savanna to explore the world of chimps with Dr Jill Pruetz. Following her pioneering research in Senegal's savanna habitat, Jill reveals her incredible discoveries about the behavior of our closest relatives, offering insights into the lives of our early hominin ancestors. 'I hadn't anticipated fire as a part of their environment, and it's a major part of their environment.'At Fongoli, Jill has encountered a fascinating array of behaviors that defy conventional wisdom about chimpanzees. From navigating wildfires and soaking in water for thermoregulation, to the systematic use of tools for hunting bush babies, the savanna chimps exhibit behaviors unlike any seen before.‘There were chimps hanging out in this cave!'One of the most striking discoveries was the remarkable imbalance between male and female hunting capabilities. Contrary to the norm observed in other chimp populations, females at Fongoli were the primary hunters, wielding tools with precision to secure prey. This unique cultural phenomenon challenges traditional views of chimp behavior and demonstrates the complexity of social dynamics across different chimpanzee communities.Tune in to learn more now, on Talking Apes Podcast. To support The Fingoli Savanna Chimpanzee Project:https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/fongoli-savanna-chimpanzee-project/ Send us a Text Message.Support the Show.Talking Apes is an initiative of the nonprofit GLOBIO. One of the most charismatic species of the rainforests of south-east Asia is the orangutan. The orangutan is the only wild species of Great Ape found in Asia, with the remaining three,  gorillas, chimpanzees, and bonobos, found in Africa.  Until 1996, the orangutan was considered one individual species. However, since then the species has been divided into three subspecies, which include the Borneon, Sumatran, and Tapanuli Orangutan. Historically, the orangutan's range spread across southeast Asia and south China. Now, the species is found in fragmented populations scattered across the Borneon and Sumatran rainforests. The species, unfortunately, is on the brink of extinction, with all three subspecies classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List.  Habitat loss, driven by the rampant expansion of palm oil plantations, is the primary threat to these ecological engineers. The bushmeat trade also looms large on the species. In this episode of The Think Wildlife Podcast, I interview Michelle Desilets, the Executive Director of the Orangutan Land Trust to discuss the future and conservation of the charismatic Great Ape. Join Fazale Rana and Hugh Ross as they discuss new discoveries taking place at the frontiers of science that have theological and philosophical implications, including the reality of God's existence. Chimp Tactical Behavior Researchers from the Tai Chimpanzee Project operating out of the Ivory Coast recently reported that chimpanzees make use of high ground to gain tactical information about rival groups. This is the first time that this human-like behavior has been observed in other animals. According to these researchers this behavior requires advanced cognitive skills and provides insight into humanity's evolutionary origins. What do these observations say about human uniqueness and human exceptionalism? Do human beings only differ in degree, not kind, from the Great Apes? In this episode, biochemist Fuz Rana discusses this impressive study and engages these challenging questions. New Big Bang Test Astronomers used the SIBELIUS DARK computer simulation to test the predictions of the standard LCDM big bang creation model and standard galaxy formation theory. Based on these predictions, SIBELIUS DARK successfully reproduced the spatial distributions of galaxies in the Laniakea supergalaxy cluster. It agreed with the observed excess of giant elliptical galaxies along the supergalactic plane. The simulation also revealed—contrary to previous studies—new confirmation that large disk and elliptical galaxy formation fits key predictions of the LCDM big bang model.  Links & Resources PLAYLIST –  Stars, Cells, and God   Sylvain R. What does an ocean conservation president do when everything shuts down during a pandemic?   Well, she discovers a world full of life and wonder in the urban Los Angeles landscape, of course.  In between field study assignments for whales and dolphins as part of her landmark marine biology studies, she found astonishing forms of nature in the most unlikely places.  We talk about her journey both as a scientist and wildlife advocate, and I explain why she's an incredible 'Forest Educator' despite being far from most forests on a daily basis.    "What about Kelp?" I think to myself, but our small definitions don't really matter in light of the ecological crisis unfolding before us on a daily basis. Maddalena is the author of the recently published Stranded: Finding Nature in Uncertain Places, as well as Beautiful Minds: The Parallel Lives of Great Apes and Dolphins, and Dolphin Confidential: Confessions of a Field Biologist.   Her stories and writing describe a lifetime of passion for the natural world, and our conversation dives into her many books, as well as her work as the President and co-founder of the Ocean Conservation Society.
