Neil Fitzsimon actually introduced me to the term "Indie Dream Pop" and no one is sure where that originated but one thing's for sure, the world of music needs a new genre title...LOL. The songs featured in episode 39 are simply good songs, and good on one listen. The first track is Girl in a Gilded Cage from the album Big Blue World. It's a showcase for Bee Brogran's voice, layered and beautiful. The second track we selected is The Cutest and the Cruelest from the first album by FaB Productions (Fitzsimon and Brogan Productions). The album was mixed by Pat Collier, the producer of Walking On Sunshine by Katrina and Waves. The Cutest and the Cruelest is the single from the album and reached number three in the French national download chart. To translate to French..."c'est énorme." To translate into dog years? It's a huge pup. The third track is The Girl Who Shouted Love from the album of the same title, to be released this autumn. Fitzsimon and Brogan's influences range from The Beatles, Elvis Costello, Jimmy Webb, Jacques Brel and David Bowie. Their aim is to produce pure pop for now people. Their aim is true.
Neil Fitzsimon and Bee Brogan were both members of the band, Pretty Blue Gun, who were signed to an indie label licensed to Sony. They released two albums which were critically acclaimed. Some of the guest musicians included members of The Art of Noise, Dave Bronze (Eric Clapton’s bass player), Tobias Boshell (Moody Blues) and Pip Williams who played guitar on the Walker Brothers’ track, ‘No Regrets’. The albums were produced by Pat Collier, who produced Katrina and the Waves’ international hit, ‘Walking on Sunshine’. The band went on national tours across the UK until disbanding. Neil Fitzsimon, the songwriter, and Bee Brogan, the vocalist, then went on to form a song writing/production partnership that led to placement of their songs in Film and TV. They also wrote a musical, Jack Dagger, which was showcased at the Greenwich Theatre, London for the Musical Futures Award. It was also showcased at the Bridewell and the Royal College of Music in London. They have also just had a song placed in a USA Sci Fi Feature film. They recently had a track reach number 3 in a French national download chart. All songs are written by Neil Fitzsimon. Vocals, keyboards, drums and engineering by Bee Brogan. All guitars played by Neil Fitzsimon. Fitzsimon and Brogan see themselves as a studio act much in the vein of Tin Tin Out and Talk Talk. Their influences range from The Beatles, Elvis Costello, Jimmy Webb, Jacques Brel and David Bowie. Their aim is to produce pure pop for now people.

Filament Theatre's latest production is Rufus Longbottom and the Space Rabbit, which was created after the production team collaborated with more than 600 schoolchildren on ideas for characters for the new show. In 2016, Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield produced its first ever professional pantomime, Cinderella, written by one of the UK’s leading pantomime writers, Andrew Pollard, who has been brought back to write this year’s Jack and the Beanstalk. Andrew is taking a year off from playing Dame at Greenwich Theatre to tour in Around the World in 80 Days as Phileas Fogg. However there are still 6 of his panto scripts in production this Christmas around the UK. In this episode, Andrew speaks extensively about his views on what pantos should contain, the qualities required for good panto performers and how to deal with changing requirements, demands and attitudes to keep panto fresh and entertaining for new audiences. Jack and the Beanstalk by Andrew Pollard will run at Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield from 8 December 2017 to 6 January 2018. Andrew’s other pantos this year include Cinderella at Greenwich Theatre from 17 November 2017, another Jack and the Beanstalk at Salisbury Playhouse from 2 December 2017 and Beauty and the Beast at Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch from 30 November 2017, all finishing on 7 January 2018. Brace yourself: our theatre editor Gareth K Vile confesses he's actually enjoying himself at the Fringe. It might be down to his enthusiasm for Wild Bore, which he describes as the 'most important piece of work I'll see this year at the Fringe, or anywhere else for that matter'. Today's episode is a little inspired by that show, as he looks at different ways of making theatre, starting with traditional, script-based director and ensemble cast. First up, director James Haddrell of Greenwich Theatre introduces to the festival two shows from female playwrights, Under My Thumb and Gazing at a Distant Star. In part two, Sha Nazir, Art Director and Publisher of BHP Comics and Founder of Glasgow Comic Con, shares a couple of festival picks. Finally Gareth talks to Rachel Briscoe, director of Lists for the End of the World, and they discuss that show, theatrical form, and the meaning of dramaturgy.Show notes: 00:00:00 – introduction00:01:11 – interview with James Haddrell, director of Under My Thumb and Gazing at a Distant Star00:11:09 – Sha Nazir (Glasgow Comic Con, BHP Comics) festival picks: One Man Shoe, Ahir Shah: Control00:19:41 – interview with Rachel Briscoe, director of Lists for the End of the WorldCredits:Festival City Podcast is co-created by Gareth K Vile (host) and Scott Henderson (producer). It's the time of year when we fall into the familiar, the traditions we've recycled since childhood. But why do we do it? Michael Blastland examines the psychology of how we behave around Christmas. Mistletoe, gift-giving, decorated evergreen trees - irresistibly or unthinkingly, we all act out this time of year in a similar way. Do we simply copy each other? Is it about reinforcing group identity? Or do we fear the consequences if we transgress tradition? In fact, how traditions arise and take hold - and more widely, what becomes conventional behaviour - is core to being human. How did Captain James Cook use convention to win over Fuegian tribesman? Is tradition as much about the present as the past? And why is there moral outrage when we violate these traditions? Michael Blastland investigates with resident Zoo psychologist Nick Chater, Professor of Behavioural Science at Warwick Business School, and roving reporter Timandra Harkness. Contributors this week include Professor Robert Sugden, an economist from University of East Anglia; Professor Anne Murcott, anthropologist from SOAS, University of London; and Dr Björn Lindström, researcher at the Emotion Lab, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm. The programme also includes writer and broadcaster Simon Fanshawe on Midnight Mass and when is the correct time to cook the turkey, and the cast of Andrew Pollard's Little Red Riding Hood from the Greenwich Theatre. Producer: Dom Byrne A Pier production for BBC Radio 4.
