Our guest today has been described as one of the best basketball players the state of Iowa has ever seen. Even with an outstanding career as her legacy, Kristi Hayes believes being the mom of NBA star Jaxson Hayes is the true miracle of her life. At age 22 she survived ovarian cancer and wondered if she would ever be able to have children. Drafted 8th Overall in the 2019 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks, Kristi describes Jaxson's journey as a Cinderella story and tells us about the unlikely path he followed to make it to the NBA, from barely making it on his high school B team, through college ball, draft night, and playing with Zion Williamson. Kristi shares with us why she missed his first NBA game, what it's been like having him play for the New Orleans Pelicans, and what she's done to set the record straight about who Jaxson has inherited his talent from.
Ke'Bryan Hayes did it again with his glove, another web gem, something we see from the rookie more often than not. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Corlis Hayes had to kiss her professor - on stage! It was right there in the script. Evidently he did not like her performance. Calling her to his office he said simply, “You don’t know what the hell you’re doing.” Wait till you hear how he told her to prepare for the role! Corlis is just a delight and a treasure to the theater and to our town.

The Philadelphia Flyers made a trip down to D.C. for a meeting with the Washington Capitals. There was a lot on the line. Either the Flyers would be one point out of the top spot in the Metropolitan or five points out. Spoiler Alert: The margin is now one point. The Orange & Black won their seventh straight game after beating the Caps 5-2 in Capital One Arena. It was a hostile environment and a physical game making this win even more impressive. In the first period, James Van Riemsdyk broke his hand so Alain Vigneault had to jumble the forwards around throughout the night. Also, the Flyers took a ton of penalties and headed into the first intermission down one goal after Lars Ellers snuck one by Brian Elliott. The second period Travis Konecny, Kevin Hayes, and Tyler Pitlick scored to take a 3-1 lead. Derek Grant had a filthy pass on Hayes' goal, kicking the puck with his foot back door for a wide-open net. Towards the end of the second frame, Scott Laughton tried to make a drop pass which was picked up by the Capitals and Garnet Hathaway found a way to score. With only 1:30 left in the period, this was an AWFUL time to allow them life. Claude Giroux was hit by Tom Wilson and Robert Hagg stepped up to fight. This was Wilson's second fight of the night after dropping the mitts with Nate Thompson in the first. Ivan Provorov and Scott Laughton each recorded a goal in the third period past Braden Holtby to finish the game off. This team continues to climb the standings!

We first encountered talented pianist Dylan Hayes performing with a trio at Centrum's Jazz Pt. Townsend camp this Summer, and we knew this young man was ready for the KNKX studios. Hayes is in his final year studying jazz at Cornish College in Seattle, and he brought a fellow student and a few friends in town for a sonic display of his skills as a player, bandleader and composer. He's been working with his own big band and the large ensemble led by Jim Knapp, as well as various small groups around town for a couple years. This Studio Session blended Hayes' talents on acoustic and electric keyboards, with terrific moments for all five members of his quintet. Having known drummer Xavier Lecouturier since high school, their collaborations were the most impressive. Especially noteworthy was their co-written song "XD", but all three originals required plenty of sheet music for all the players. In spite of the concentration on the pages, the music carried the organic feeling of having been
Can’t Buy a Thrill by Steely Dan This is Walter Becker and Donald Fagen's debut album as Steely Dan. Taking their name from the William S. Burroughs novel "Naked Lunch," Becker's guitar work and Fagen's keyboard and vocals combine in a jazz-rock fusion, and Can't Buy a Thrill shows a lot of smoothness and diversity from jazz to latin to straight-ahead rock guitar. This is a stellar debut album from a group who would go on to create a string of hits throughout the 70's, and have a staying power that lives on today. Do It Again This song made it to number 6 on the U.S. charts in 1973, making it Steely Dan's second highest charting song. Waylon Jennings covered "Do It Again" in 1980 Dirty Work With David Palmer on lead vocals, Dirty Work has a very different sound than most Steely Dan songs. Steely Dan was encouraged to pursue this sound as more commercially accessible, but the band would consolidate on Fagen's vocals instead. Midnite Cruiser A deeper cut off the album, Midnite Cruiser has the distinct harmonies and jazz chord progressions we've come to identify with Steely Dan. Drummer Jim Hodder fronts the vocals with lyrics like "Drive me to Harlem or somewhere the same," showing the musical geography that shaped Becker and Fagen. Reelin in the Years Elliott Randall plays guitar on this song. Jimmy Page considered the solo from this song as his favorite of all time. What clever lyrics: "You've been telling me you're a genius since you were seventeen/in all the time I've known you I still don't know what you mean." "The things that pass for knowledge I can't understand." Entertainment Track: Theme from Maude. This TV series took its cue from the women's liberation movement. Staff Picks: The Moody Blues - I'm Just A Singer in a Rock and Roll Band Bruce points out that the lyrics of this song is a reaction to fans who took the lyrics of the Moody Blues too seriously. The songs of this album "Seventh Sojourn" were overshadowed by the re-release of "Days of Future Past" along the same time. The Raspberries - I Wanna Be with You Wayne brings us the Raspberries formed in Cleveland in 1970. Eric Carmen (writer of "Hungry Eyes and "All By Myself", and not to be confused with Eric Cartman from Southpark), fronts this group. The Doobie Brothers - Listen to the Music One of Brian's favorites, this is the first hit off the Toulouse Street album which came out in September of 1972. The Doobie Brothers often close their concerts with this song. It is a call to peace. Jim Croce - Operator (That's Not the Way It Feels) Rob takes a mellow turn with his staff pick. Croce tells the story of a lonely guy calling the operator, and was inspired by seeing GI's on base lining up to call home. Great lyrics from a master storyteller. Laugh Track: Isaac Hayes - this is the theme from the TV show, "The Men." Hayes' soulful theme finishes off our podcast this week. “Yeah....baby....how ya feelin'?...” (say it in a low voice like Isaac and see where it gets you).

Before 2017, Jim Hayes never thought about who owned his Denver Broncos tickets. He always thought that he did. Since 2011, after being on a 75,000+ waiting list for 6 years prior, Hayes had been a Denver Broncos season ticket holder. But when he decided to resell his tickets through the official Ticketmaster exchange, he unwittingly had his information weaponized against him. Hayes' story goes beyond the issues of resale, and explore the issues of customer service, season ticket investment loyalty. Twitter: @jamesrhayes
Tyrone Hayes is known for his research findings regarding the effects of the herbicide atrazine on frogs. Atrazine is often used by corn farmers, but Hayes' research illuminated serious questions about its safety. Syngenta, the manufacturer of atrazine, launched a campaign to discredit both Hayes and his research, which resulted in the settlement of a multi-million dollar class-action lawsuit against Syngenta.

In this episode, we examine the nature of suffering and how we cope with it. Dr. Steven Hayes, the developer of Acceptance and Commmitment Therapy and one of the foremost psychologists in the world, talks about what we can find when we open ourselves to fully experience the grief and suffering in our personal histories. In our current age of what he termed the "syndromization of human suffering," Dr. Hayes' story speaks of a more compassionate, less labeling approach toward the unavoidable tragedies we experience, and the anxiety of simply being human. Parallel to Dr. Hayes' story, we talk with someone close to the creators of In Session, about a type of loss that too often lives in silence.
Our friend Bill Caswell swings by the podcast palace to spend a few minutes talking up his recent adventure taking in the King of the Hammers. After that, Podcast Producer Chris Hayes and host Jeff Glucker dive into some general car chatter. The topics range from Jeff's recent drive of the 2015 Subaru WRX STI to Hayes' recent flings with both the Chevrolet SS and the Jaguar XFR-S.Additionally, we talk about some of the more interesting automotive adventures we have coming up. From driving Aston Martins on ice to spending a weekend with a Morgan 3 Wheeler.
