In veel onderzoeken is gekeken naar het effect van het zien van natuur, maar veel minder is er gekeken naar de rol van onze neus. Een grote groep onderzoekers uit allerlei landen en disciplines roept op om dit eens goed uit te zoeken.   Die neus van ons pikt de hele dag door chemische stofjes op uit onze omgeving. Honderden receptoren kunnen samen wel een biljoen geuren onderscheiden. Zelfs zonder dat we het merken, worden die verwerkt door de hersenen en dat heeft weer een effect op hoe we reageren en hoe we ons voelen.   De natuur zit vol met chemische stofjes om ons reukorgaan goed bezig te houden. Dankzij planten bijvoorbeeld, die een constante stroom van signaalstofjes vrijlaten. Stofjes die in de plantenwereld dienen als lokmiddel, of juist afweer.   Nou weten we maar heel beperkt hoe die mix van natuurlijke stofjes ons mensen beïnvloedt, behalve dan misschien als het op pollen aankomt. Wat we ook nog niet goed genoeg weten is in hoeverre de reactie op deze stofjes universeel is, of misschien ook gestuurd wordt door herinneringen of cultuur.   Niet overal is evenveel natuur en daarnaast zijn ook de stofjes die daar in de lucht hangen grotendeels beïnvloed door ons. Latest research shows that women with sleep problems have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The 10-year study by Harvard University in the US focused on 133 353 women with sleep problems such as difficulties falling or staying asleep and sleep apnoea. The study group included women shift workers and concluded that at least 45% of all these women stood a greater chance of developing type 2 diabetes compared to others.
