Red Letter Life: All Fear is Gone

Jonathan Haidt wrote the Anxious Generation to describe the reality of anxiety in our world. What frightens us most these days? How do we overcome our fears? After Jesus rose from death, his words empowered his disciples to live fearlessly. What if we lived by the red letters? Message based on Matthew 28:1-10 and Revelation 1:17-18.Quotes:John Updike: Seven Stanzas at EasterMake no mistake: if he rose at all It was as His body; If the cell's dissolution did not reverse, the molecule reknit, The amino acids rekindle, The Church will fall.It was not as the flowers, Each soft spring recurrent; It was not as His Spirit in the mouths and fuddled eyes of the Eleven apostles; It was as His flesh; ours. The same hinged thumbs and toes The same valved heart That—pierced—died, withered, paused, and then regathered Out of enduring Might New strength to enclose.Let us not mock God with metaphor, Analogy, sidestepping, transcendence, Making of the event a parable, a sign painted in the faded Credulity of earlier ages: Let us walk through the door. The stone is rolled back, not papier-mache, Not a stone in a story, But the vast rock of materiality that in the slow grinding of Time will eclipse for each of us The wide light of day.And if we have an angel at the tomb, Make it a real angel, Weighty with Max Planck's quanta, vivid with hair, opaque in The dawn light, robed in real linen Spun on a definite loom.Duane Brooks: This is what's happening in heaven, and it happens every time the people of God come together and worship him, heaven is coming to earth. And the hope is that maybe in our midst is somebody who doesn't yet know Jesus, but by the way we worship says that must be real. That must be true because we give God his worth.Japanese proverb: There are four things to be afraid of—fire, storm, earthquake, and one's father.Robert Murray McCheyne: If I knew Jesus was in the next room praying for me, I would not fear anything in the world. The distance makes no difference.  He is praying for me . Eugene Peterson: The most important question we may ask of the Bible is not:  what does this mean, but what can I obey.Thomas a Kempis: Instant obedience is the only kind of obedience there is; delayed obedience is disobedience.Duane Brooks: There are three words that could change the lives of every person we meet, every person we encounter. The words, he is risen. That changes everything. How do I know? Because it changed my life. Duane Brooks: "He is risen" changed your lives and it will change the life of every person who comes to believe it. We worship fearlessly. And the good news is because Christ is risen, we don't have to be afraid of dying, nor do we have to be afraid of speaking publicly about what Jesus has done in our lives. And this is the way the church has transformed culture for two thousand years.#worship #witness #faith #hope #courage To discover more messages of hope go to tallowood.org/sermons/.Follow us on Instagram, X, and YouTube @tallowoodbc.Follow us on FaceBook @tallowoodbaptist

Episode 183 it is, and we're going to take stock as we enter 1851. In war, truth is the first casualty. It's a military maxim attributed to Aeschylus (“ES-kuh-lus"), the father of Greek tragedy. Aeschylus actually fought in the front lines against the Persians at Marathon in 490 BC. We don't know much about the rest of his life, but we do know that his work called Persians which was financed by Pericles was such a success that he was invited to Sicily by Hieron of Syracuse to restage the play. His life bridged the Archaic and Classical ages. Considered even by the ancients to be difficult and old-fashioned, Aeschylus was also quite innovative in the structures, personnel, and even subjects of his 89 plays, of which we have only seven. Later, in In 1758 the famous lexicographer Samuel Johnson penned a short item in “The Idler which included the following this statement .. ‘ “Among the calamities of War may be justly numbered the diminution of the love of truth, by the falsehoods which interest dictates and credulity encourages.” Credulity. A willingness to believe whatever is dished up. The lovers of social media are infected by a disease called credulity. In this series I have endeavoured to avoid relying on credulity by constantly referring to original sources, documents, oral history, cross-referencing where I can. There is nothing more important than deploying verification. Credulity is the tendency to be too ready to believe that something is real or true, often without sufficient evidence or critical examination. It refers to a person's inclination to accept claims or assertions with little skepticism or questioning. Southern African history is full of credulity being punctured by reality. Most politicians make a living out of abusing credulity. With that melodromatic introduction, let us dive into the deep pool of tangibility regarding Mlanjeni's War, the 8th Frontier War which broke out on Christmas day 1850. The military villages along the Thyumie River were gone, burned down, dozens of British soldiers were dead, killed in Boma Pass or killed in their military villages named Auckland, Juanasburg and Woburn. In the mountains above Thyumie River, missionary Niven and his family had walked out of Keiskamma hoek and straight into a party of amaXhosa warriors. It is true that respected Rharhabe chief Ngqika had declared the missionaries and their homes protected, but that was twenty years ago and the respected chief was long gone. Into our story steps one of the most remarkable characters we've heard about thus far, a man called Hermanus Matroos. Brown was to remark later later that Matroos “… spoke English more precisely than I have ever heard any other native do…” Hermanus Matroos, otherwise known as Ngxukumeshe enters our tale, a large and imposing man, broad shouldered, powerful. Hermanus means army man, warrior, brave warrior and comes from the German, Herman. Matroos means sailor. And Ngxukumeshe means in the vanguard - at the front. These names fit the man, a warrior born of a slave sailor, a man who was always at the front of everything.

Feeling Fearful: Why People Seek Out Conspiracy Theories | Eric Oliver

What makes us more likely to believe in conspiracy theories? Can our religious beliefs or political affiliations determine whether we're less likely to believe in scientific facts? Why are health conspiracy theories some of the most widely believed notions? We revisit a conversation with Eric Oliver who talks us through the factors that drive people towards conspiracy theories. Eric Oliver, PhD is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago. Although the majority of his work is squarely in the realm of how we view our political systems and make political decisions, some of his work echoes moral psychology and sociology, and we find it fascinating. And, frankly, some of it is just downright fun to talk about. Eric's observations come from more than 20 years of research, dozens of peer-reviewed papers, and he is the author of 5 books on political science. We specifically talked about how liberals and conservatives name their children, the rise of intuitionism, having dinner with a sports star rather than a rock star, and of course, he spoke in-depth about conspiracy theories. Most importantly, he walked us through some key aspects of how to have a conversation with someone who is on the opposite side of the conspiracy-theory belief system and, interestingly enough, it begins with empathy. Listen to the entire episode to hear all his insights and research anecdotes. They'll put a smile on your face as well as fresh ideas into your brain! We have been fans of his work for some time and are grateful that Eric shared his insights with us. We think you'll become a fan, too, if you're not already one. Pier may have stopped speaking--Virgil and Dante, our pilgrim, aren't sure--but he doesn't carry on because through the underbrush crash two naked souls, all scratched up, trying to get away from horrible, black hounds. These are those who commit economic suicide, who squander their property until there's nothing left--and who perhaps masochistically take pleasure in the destruction of their own wealth. But this passage--so often skipped over in the commentary of INFERNO--is about so much more. Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as I explore three giant "what?!" moments in Inferno, Canto XIII. If Pier's speeches tested our abilities to ferret out exactly what he was really saying, this passage will stretch our "willing suspension of disbelief" to its utter limits. Is that the point? Is this whole canto about how rhetoric can make us believe the unbelievable? Here are the segments of this episode: [01:36] My English translation of the passage from Inferno: Canto XIII, lines 109 - 126. You can find it on my website, markscarbrough.com. But better yet, get yourself a great translation by a scholar like Lombardo or the Hollanders. You'll be so much happier1 [03:14] More about believing! If you don't think this canto was about the faith statement that reading entails, you're just not paying attention! [03:43] So many commentators see this passage as an "inset" episode: plunked down here. Is it? It seems to tie back to Pier in fundamental ways. [05:10] Who are these two crashing through the underbrush? [10:23] My three "what?!" moments in this passage. I think they offer us two alternatives, as you'll hear. I want to believe the second. But I'm still not sure. [18:33] The inferno of irony. What is it about INFERNO that allows Dante the poet to play so much? What is it about this canto that allows savage ironies, even directed against me, the reader? Support this podcast

After sharing some recent headlines about Bigfoots (yes, it's plural) sighting in NC and the Loch Ness Monster mystery "solved" by scientists, this week's show also has us considering research about *why* people want to believe in the supernatural and what we take away from those studies. We also share some of our personal experiences with supposedly haunted places and explore the idea that absence of evidence is NOT actually evidence of absence. We discuss critical thinking in many different aspects during this hour-long conversation about a variety of topics. All of it comes back to our ability to think about our own thinking. "Critical Thinking for Everyone" airs on FORward Radio, 106.5fm and forwardradio.org, WFMP-LP Louisville, every Thursday at 5 pm EST and repeats Thursday at midnight and Friday at 11 am. Please listen live at www.forwardradio.org/. Find us on Facebook at "Critical Thinking for Everyone". Our music is by Bensound, and it is free and available to anyone to use--www.bensound.com/.

From the 1830s to the Civil War, Americans could be found putting each other into trances for fun and profit in parlors, on stage, and in medical consulting rooms. They were performing mesmerism. Surprisingly central to literature and culture of the period, mesmerism embraced a variety of phenomena, including mind control, spirit travel, and clairvoyance. Although it had been debunked by Benjamin Franklin in late eighteenth-century France, the practice nonetheless enjoyed a decades-long resurgence in the United States. Emily Ogden here offers the first comprehensive account of those boom years.Credulity tells the fascinating story of mesmerism's spread from the plantations of the French Antilles to the textile factory cities of 1830s New England. As it proliferated along the Eastern seaboard, this occult movement attracted attention from Ralph Waldo Emerson's circle and ignited the nineteenth-century equivalent of flame wars in the major newspapers. But mesmerism was not simply the last gasp of magic in modern times. Far from being magicians themselves, mesmerists claimed to provide the first rational means of manipulating the credulous human tendencies that had underwritten past superstitions. Now, rather than propping up the powers of oracles and false gods, these tendencies served modern ends such as labor supervision, education, and mediated communication. Neither an atavistic throwback nor a radical alternative, mesmerism was part and parcel of the modern. Credulity: A Cultural History of US Mesmerism offers us a new way of understanding the place of enchantment in secularizing America.-Emily Ogden is the author of Credulity: A Cultural History of US Mesmerism. She has written for Critical Inquiry, The New York Times, American Literature, J19, Lapham's Quarterly Online, Early American Literature, and Public Books. “Everyone’s a little bit racist” sing the puppets in the musical Avenue Q. Playwright Greg Kalleres takes that thought and runs with it in Honky, running now at Left Edge Theatre. It opens up with a commercial for Skymax 16’s, the latest craze in athletic footwear. It ends with the tag line “S’up now?” which we soon learn is the last thing said to a black teen before he’s killed for the shoes. Lights up on the office of Davis Tallison (Mike Pavone), the white president of a company that makes footwear “by black people for black people.” Thomas Hodge (Trey G. Riley) is there to unveil his latest design and is aghast to learn that sales of the 16’s have exploded in the white youth community since the shooting. Tallison announces the new 17’s will now be marketed to them. Hodge is furious that something he created for “his people” has become bastardized and seeks some sort of retribution on the creator of the commercial he thinks is responsible. Enter Peter Trammel (Mark Bradbury), whose issues about the commercial’s impact have led him to a therapist (Liz Rogers-Beckley) with her own issues. In a coincidence that only occurs to writers, she happens to be Hodge’s sister. Credulity is further strained when Hodge runs into Peter’s fiancé (Lydia Revelos) and sees a way for some payback, but credulity really shouldn’t be an issue in a play with a sublot involving a new pharmaceutical cure for racism whose side effects lead to visions of a lusty Abraham Lincoln (Nick Christenson) and a foul-mouthed Frederick Douglass (Julius Rea). Part absurdist farce and part blistering social commentary, Honky will make you laugh and uncomfortable. More about racial identity than racism, the feelings of being “too white” or “not black enough” are deftly combined with swipes at our consumerist society where discrimination is masked as “marketing” and stereotypes are just “demographics.” Director Argo Thompson has a terrific cast with California-newcomer Riley outstanding as the conflicted Hodge. The opening scene with veteran Pavone crackles and sets the tone for the duration. Excellent work is done by all with an extra shout out to Julius Rea and Jim Kaskey for their work as a variety of ‘urban’ youth the other characters encounter. Funny, infuriating, profane and profound, shows like Honky don’t play on wine country stages that often. Catch it while you can. ‘Honky’ runs through July 1 at Left Edge Theatre located in the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts in Santa Rosa. Friday and Saturday evening performances are at 8pm. There’s a Sunday matinee at 2pm. For more information, go to leftedgetheatre.com
