Joy Spence was the first female master blender in the entire spirits industry and today, 40 years later, she is still creating exceptional rum. Joy's journey into the world of spirits began with a passion for chemistry in high school and a teacher who helped her to reach her full potential. Her intellect, combined with her endearing and tenacious personality, makes her an unstoppable force. According to Joy, the main element that sets Jamaican rum apart is that when you drink it you can feel the spirit of the country; and Joy herself oozes that spirit too. Not only is Joy a world-class blender, but she also dedicates a lot of her time to helping other young women discover their passions and follow their dreams. Joy has so much fascinating knowledge to share, and by the end of this episode, you'll know if you have what it takes to be a master blender and the proper way to drink rum! Appleton Estate's Master Blender, Joy Spence, has the honour of being the first woman to hold the position of Master Blender in the spirits industry. In this role, Joy is responsible for ensuring the quality and consistency of existing blends, creating new rum blends, and monitoring the company's inventory of aging rum stocks. Simply put, it is Joy's job to ensure that that all Appleton Estate rum blends meet the high standards that consumers have grown to love and expect. Joy joined Appleton Estate as Chief Chemist in 1981 where her passion for the art of creating rum-blends was inspired by her predecessor and mentor at the company, then Master Blender, Owen Tulloch. When Owen retired Joy was appointed the Master Blender in 1997. Key Points From This Episode: • This year is Joy's 40th anniversary at Appleton Estate Rum as their master blender. • Joy's upbringing in Jamaica, as an adopted child. • The woman who fostered Joy's love for chemistry, and her devastating death. • Joy's education and professional background, leading up to her current role. • Paths that Joy's children have taken career-wise. • Skills that are vital for the work that Joy does. • How the heat in Jamaica impacts the rum being produced there. • The huge difference between standard rum and premium aged rum. • What makes Jamaican rum unique. • Admirable work that Joy is doing to help others. • Advice for anyone out there who is hoping to pursue a career as a master blender. • The new, very limited, collections that Joy has been working on, one of which sold out within two hours when it was released in Europe! • What the Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience entails. • How Joy likes to drink rum, what specific rums should be paired with, and an explanation of how to make Joy's Cocktail. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/afrosandknivespod/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/afrosandknivespod/support

Today’s Invisible Stories guest is speaker, writer, scholar, and facilitator Dr. Joy Wiggins, who, through the company she founded, promotes racial and gender justice through compassion and open dialogue to ignite equitable, empowering and transformative practices. Joy Wiggins is the co-author alongside Kami Anderson of the book From Sabotage to Support: A New Vision for Feminist Solidarity in the Workplace. As CEO of Joy Wiggins, PhD: Equity and Inclusion Consulting, Joy provides speaking, facilitation, and mentorship opportunities on the topics of power, privilege, racial and gender justice and liberation. She has spent the last 20 years working on understanding our cultural identities and perceptions of how we navigate the world through our cultural identities.    In this podcast, Joy and I delve into the process she went through with co-authoring a book, coming from a mostly academic writing background. She discusses:  What it was like to partner with seasoned author Dr. Anderson, and how she learned to adapt from writing academically to creating their joint book on intersectionality and female solidarity.  How she was able to strike a balance between explaining concepts succinctly within her writing to guide her readers, while also learning to let go and not include every detail.  The collaborative process of working with a developmental editor, and the flexibility that comes with getting to choose an editor.  How Joy had to pivot in her ideas for a second book once COVID-19 hit, and how the pandemic has influenced the way she is researching and writing about women during this period of time.

Bunmi had a preference for the gym, while Joy preferred to be active at home, making working out together a challenge. After each session, Joy and Bunmi would message one another and subsequently receive encouragement for completion.  Realizing the impact of these small gestures, both Joy and Bunmi noticed these practices could be beneficial to other people and communities. Joy utilized her skillset from obtaining a Ph.D. in Communication along with seven years of inclusivity training to create content for the app that focused on bodies of varying access needs, ableness, size, and other identities typically not included when discussing fitness. Additionally, Bunmi offered wisdom obtained through his background in business administration, entrepreneurship, and Pan-Africanism to emphasize the importance of community building and logistics behind the scenes. In this call learn: -We know that healing can take place in an instant, but despite that, many of us don't really believe that it can happen for us. What is that about? -Why self-care makes many of us want to scream and why it's actually a radical act (and, in these times, a radical act of defiance). -How moving more fully into living in a moment-to-moment paradigm is full of infinite potential for creation, how and why we don't trust that and the mass consciousness is working in opposition to that. -How JOY is essential to our health -How we have accidentally started using spirituality to move into blame instead of compassion with our own bodies when we need healing. -The depth to which global healing and personal healing are interwoven. -Why we are able to heal much quicker than we used to—individually and collectively. -How we can best utilize Angelic support for healing and energy in our day-to-day life.

How Teacher Buzz about Conscious Discipline Transformed the State of Alabama

In 1996, Dr. Bailey set out to help teachers and children from her guest bedroom. Even with no strategy and no marketing, word spread about the transformational results. One teacher found it helpful and told another teacher, who told more teachers, and the movement grew. 20 years later, Conscious Discipline has reached 47 countries and counting, inspiring more than 3.5 million educators and caregivers and impacting an estimated 17.4 million children. This powerful grassroots approach has also swept the state of Alabama. Joy Winchester, who works for the state’s Department of Early Childhood Education, gained a reputation for having a special ability to work with children who had challenging behaviors. That “special ability” was Conscious Discipline. Two teachers reached out to Joy for help, and she began conducting a Conscious Discipline book study via e-mail. The teachers got excited, and so did their classroom coach. Word spread, and 300 teachers completed Joy’s book study in one year. From there, Conscious Disciplined gained the support of administrators, superintendents, and the Department of Early Childhood Education. It’s now implemented in preschool classrooms and with infants and toddlers statewide. Interest has also spread to K-12 and even to higher education. Colleges in Alabama are interested in blending Conscious Discipline with their teacher education curriculums, and the University of Alabama’s neurology department is studying Conscious Discipline’s impact in the state. In this episode, Joy Winchester, the Director of the Office of Early Childhood Development and Professional Support, tells the story of how the buzz created by a simple book study led to Conscious Discipline implementation at the state level. She also shares Alabama’s innovative approach to bringing an entire state to Conscious Discipline fidelity. Essential Takeaways • When Joy is asked how she’s changing an entire state, she responds, “Through teachers.” Teachers saw that Conscious Discipline was working with their students and it spread to administrators, then to superintendents, and then to the state level. • Alabama started by training the most effective teachers who were willing to implement Conscious Discipline first. After a very thorough selection process, 76 teachers were selected as the starting point. These teachers could then serve as model classrooms and teach the powers and skills to others. • Conscious Discipline Instructors have also coached in the 76 selected classrooms and are coaching Alabama’s classroom coaches as well. • The coaches are working with teachers at their own pace and allowing them to become comfortable with one step at a time. After just one year, many teachers are already implementing to fidelity. Sometimes, when you make a mistake or say the wrong thing, it sticks with you. I mean, it really sticks with you. Sometimes, that can stick with you for days, weeks, or even years. Even just thinking about it can make your face turn red and your chest constricts due to all the anxiety, guilt, and general discomfort around the whole thing. These feelings can spark the desire to run away and avoid this discomfort at all costs. This is especially true with conversations centered around race: where white people with good intentions make mistakes, get defensive, and avoid the discomfort. On today’s episode, we talk with Joy Fennel, who handles these difficult and uncomfortable conversations with absolute grace. Together, we talk about where we have unintentionally participated in “white feminism,” and left others behind.
