In this engaging conversation, Joy McCarthy shares her personal journey from struggling with health issues to becoming a nutritionist and skincare expert.  She emphasizes the importance of self-worth in health, discusses her experience with rosacea, and highlights the role of diet and lifestyle in skin healing.  Joy also delves into her philosophy on skincare product development, advocating for a simplified routine that prioritizes hydration and skin health.  The discussion concludes with insights on community support and the ongoing journey of health and wellness.   Takeaways Joy's journey into wellness began with her own health struggles. Self-worth is crucial for making lasting health changes. Many people tolerate poor health due to a lack of self-worth. Healing is a continuous journey, not a one-time fix. Diet and lifestyle play significant roles in skin health. Rosacea is a common but often misunderstood condition. Skincare should focus on hydration and maintaining the skin barrier. Natural products can still irritate sensitive skin if not chosen carefully. Community support is vital for health and healing journeys. Simplifying skincare routines can lead to better results.   Chapters 00:00 Introduction and Background 04:20 Joy's Healing Journey 07:19 The Role of Self-Worth in Health 09:57 Navigating Skin Health and Rosacea 12:35 Understanding Rosacea and Its Challenges 16:57 The Impact of Diet and Lifestyle on Skin 19:38 The Journey to Finding Effective Skincare 22:34 Conclusion and Final Thoughts 30:13 The Journey to Healing Skin 33:41 The Importance of Holistic Approaches 34:29 Understanding Skincare Ingredients 40:25 Simplifying Skincare Routines 46:33 Aging Gracefully and Compassionately 49:36 Life Lessons and Personal Growth   Stay Wild. On this episode, Joy McCarthy discusses the evolution of her career from starting Joyous Health, a wellness brand, to co-founding Hello Joyous, a sustainable beauty brand. Joy McCarthy is a Holistic Nutritionist and founder of JoyousHealth.com, an award-winning blog and co-founder of Hello Joyous, an organic + plant-forward beauty brand with a rock-solid mission: to help people find more joy in the everyday. She is an author of three bestselling cookbooks: Joyous Health, The Joyous Cookbook and Joyous Detox, a World Gourmand Cookbook Award recipient. Joy talks about the motivation behind creating truly clean products, the challenges of separating her personal brand from her product line, and how focusing on transparency has set her apart in a heavily greenwashed industry. Joy also shares practical advice for entrepreneurs on managing multiple business channels, the importance of self-care, and her approach to product formulation and certifications. Key Takeaways Building Trust Through Transparency: Success in the clean beauty space hinges on transparency and genuinely delivering on promises. Avoid common industry pitfalls by ensuring your products are genuinely clean and effective. How to: Be transparent with your ingredients and avoid marketing shortcuts that mislead consumers. The Power of Focus in Brand Building: Separating a product line from a personal brand can lead to significant growth. By creating a distinct brand identity, you can better target your audience and streamline your marketing efforts. How to: Consider when a product line might benefit from its own brand and invest in professional branding and design to make the transition. Navigating Greenwashing: The term “clean beauty” is often misused. To stand out, ensure your products are not just labeled as clean but truly are, with no hidden harmful ingredients. How to: Educate your consumers on how to identify greenwashing and be transparent about the certifications and standards your products meet. Balancing Retail and Direct-to-Consumer Sales: Both retail and direct-to-consumer channels have their advantages. Retail can help manage inventory and cash flow, while direct sales often offer better margins. How to: Evaluate your business model to decide the right mix of sales channels for your brand. Self-Care as a Business Strategy: Prioritizing your health is essential for sustained entrepreneurial success. When you take care of yourself, you can better manage your business and personal responsibilities. How to: Schedule time for self-care activities like exercise and proper nutrition, and recognize the importance of harmony over balance in work and life. Do you ever get the feeling that you’re not really excelling at anything? You’re being pulled in different directions and you’re juggling so many commitments at once that it’s hard to know what’s more important. It feels like you’re doing “okay” in all your endeavours, but you’re not achieving the results you were hoping for. How do you get to a place where you’ve achieved that healthy balance? The place where you’re eating well, you’re sleeping well, you’re kicking your career goals and you’re just…living well. This is a question that my guest today, Joy McCarthy knows well. Joy is an incredible business woman running her own deliciously inspiring company, Joyous Health. Joyous Health is the ongoing story of how one woman took her passion for natural health and not only used it to heal her own health issues, but to also inspire and teach others that they can take charge of their own health joyously, mindfully, and naturally. Although Joy and her wonderful Joyous team have built up a super successful company, she acknowledges that it wasn’t always like this. There were a lot of times in the early days of starting this business that Joy admitted to being an absolute workaholic. Working nights, weekends and just hustling her butt off. Even though she thrives on being busy and relishes in the opportunity to overcome hurdles, learning to switch off and relax was a skill that had to be learned. You can’t keep going, and going, no matter how much you love something without eventually burning out. You need to allow your body time to rest, relax and rejuvenate. This episode is so packed full of helpful takeaways for entrepreneurs and wellness enthusiasts. Get ready to be inspired! How can we combat sugar cravings and support our microbiome? Learn some tips from Joy McCarthy of Joyous Health as she shares her story of overcoming her sugar addiction. We also talk about how we can heal our microbiome and keep it healthy, raising resilient kids, entrepreneurship, and more! You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode69.     Topics Discussed in this Episode: How Joy overcame her sugar addiction Symptoms of sugar addiction Tips to combat sugar cravings The microbiome and how we can support it Studies involving the microbiome Joy’s favorite gut-healing foods The carnivore diet and how it affects the microbiome Nourishing the microbiome in babies and children Raising resilient children The ups and downs on entrepreneurship and tips for running your business   Key Takeaways: When it comes to fighting sugar addiction, it’s not just about taking away certain foods from your diet but about adding in what’s healthy for you. We have trillions of microbes in and on our body that affect everything, from our mood to the health of our skin to the health of our immune system, and a large concentration of them are in our gut, particularly the colon. Polyphenols are phytonutrients that act as prebiotics. The nutrients in fermented foods are so much more bio available, such that they really optimize and help your digestive system and your body overall. Phytonutrients are what give plants their beautiful color. So if you want to make sure you eat a gut-friendly diet, make sure you’re eating a lot of different colors. When a baby travels through the birth canal, that’s essentially its first touchpoint with the microbiome. Action Steps: Retrain your palate. Make sure that you eat lots of plant-based foods. Eat fermented foods (if you can). When shopping for food, fill your cart with a variety of colors, and eat a rainbow Do everything you can to try and breastfeed your baby. Avoid antibiotics for the health of your child’s microbiome.   Joy said: “Anyone who’s ever done a sugar detox knows that once you cut out those refined sugars and artificial sweeteners, that things that are sweet are so much [sweeter].” “You are in charge of your own health. You are responsible for your own health, and you know your body better than anybody else. So I believe that we have a lot of the answers within ourselves to heal our own body.”   Thanks for listening! Important Announcements: Connect with me over on Instagram, @holisticwellnessfoodie! As a child she grew up eating well and she was fortunate enough to have a lot of healthy habits instilled into her early however, through the teenage years she suffered with anxiety, hair loose, poor digestion, she didn’t get her period regularly and she knew something was not right. After many years of trying to determine why she was having these issues she was able to heal her body with diet. She continues to listen to what her body needs while she teaches her daughter and thousands of others through her online programs, her books and social media. She’s an amazing advocate for others struggling with their health and looking for that inspiration and knowledge. Joy loves social media and shares her passion for food, family and fun as a way to channel positive energy into the lives of others.   Joy shares her passion about the relationship between the gut microbiome and  your overall health. Recent research shows that we are more bacteria than we are human, that is why taking care of these bacteria has a vital importance.   The foundations of good gut health start with regular bowel movements which are essential for keeping hormone balance, as they directly contribute to hormone detoxification.    There are many key foods that are very effective at supporting the body’s natural detoxification process, like kale, cabbage, arugula, broccoli, cauliflower, and sea vegetables which protect the liver. A healthy diet should include  vegetables and fruits rich in fiber like spinach, apples, pears and green beans. The variety of these healthy foods makes a difference in assisting the detoxification of your systems. If you’ve experienced problems digesting raw foods, Joy also gives her best tips on how to start introducing them back into your diet.   Joy shares how the skin, as the largest channel of elimination, can be cared in different ways:  ● dry brushing,   ● showering the right way in order to protect your skin microbiome,  ● and getting rid of the beauty products that are adding toxins and chemicals instead of enhancing your natural beauty and health. Joy, as a mother and an entrepreneur, has to juggle and sort her way through the daily chaos to create space for her own health, and in this episode she is giving out the best tips for real, strong, loving, sensitive and creative women to live their lives in a joyful and healthy way.
