When Andrew Peterson started the Rabbit Room—this was 2006 or 2007—he didn’t know what to expect. He had no way of knowing that this little group blog written by friends and friends of friends would give rise to annual conferences—Hutchmoot and Hutchmoot UK—to a publishing house, to an event space—North Wind Manor—to The Local Show, to Rabbit Room Theater, to the podcast network of which The Habit Podcast is a part. More to the point, Andrew had no way of knowing what a difference the Rabbit Room would make in the lives of so many people. In this episode, Rabbit Room founder Andrew Peterson and Rabbit Room Executive Director David Bruno tell the story of the Rabbit Room.Support the show: https://therabbitroom.givingfuel.com/memberSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

From host Matt Conner: " If you've hung around The Rabbit Room over the years, then you'll likely recognize the name and wonderful work of writer and speaker Helena Sorensen. She's a frequent contributor to The Rabbit Room site as well as a presenter at Hutchmoot. She's often featured with our friends at the Story Warren as well. As the author of the Shiloh series as well as The Door on Half-Bald Hill, perhaps her meaningful prose has found a home on your shelves, too. After charting a theological course with Thomas McKenzie (which you shouldn't miss in our first episode), I wanted to continue the conversation with Helena because I had been privileged enough to see her creative journey up close. I knew that she'd become a fountain of wisdom about this whole process. When I first met Helena, she was a disciplined writer who was obedient to her craft and devoted to excellence. But she was also completely in the closet. Over the years, it's been so heartening to watch the ways in which she's grown to find an audience, and then to serve that audience with encouragement, coaching, and the authentic sharing of her own story. I've watched Helena walk through this very process of partnering with the Spirit to bring something to the world. And I've watched her offer it with open hands. On this episode, I asked Helena about her journey to date and what she thinks about the idea of chasing excellence, finding her worth in what matters, and this whole idea of calling it good in the first place." A story of three different experiences woven together by three rivers, this episode Brad shares about how his time on these rivers serve as a reminder to the goodness he has experienced. We all need to practice remembrance for when tough times set in, these experiences of goodness serve as monument to help us remember “It won't always be this hard.” The story tells a small portion of his experience attending Hutchmoot , a conference hosted by the good folks of the Rabbit Room, where he sat next to the Harpeth River in fellowship with new and old friends. The story then journeys to Montana where he officiated a wedding for a young couple from his church, and then how he was fortunate to fly fish on the Flathead river the next day. Andrew Peterson: The storytelling songwriter on depression, CS Lewis and the ‘Is he worthy?' controversy

Andrew Peterson's biggest struggle is believing the truth that God loves him. Not because God isn't loving, he explains, but because “I'm not lovable”. It's a surprising admission from a man who has sold thousands of records and tours internationally. In this in depth interview with Premier Christianity's Sam Hailes, Andrew opens up about a variety of topics, including his battle with depression, why community is so important to him, and his reflections following the ‘Is he worthy?' music video controversy. Speaking during the first ever Hutchmoot gathering in Oxford, Andrew also recalls growing up in the “troubled culture” of the American South, how his faith has matured over time and why he recently became a bee-keeper. Only a very few novels come together in such a way as to perfectly capture the aspects of language, faith, adventure, beauty, and mystery that we love so much in the Rabbit Room, and Leif Enger is the rare author who has written more than one of them. Whether it's the miraculous tale of Peace Like a River, the conversational grace of So Brave, Young, and Handsome, or the high-flying kites of Virgil Wander, Leif is a teller of the kind of tales that we love to love. Here, in his 2013 Hutchmoot address, he reminds us that we’re all driven by a holy wind, and we’re at our best when we relax into its mystery, and sail a course full and by. Music is one of the defining cultures of the Clarkson family.  A handful of talented musicians have permeated all the seasons of our family history,  as we listened together, sang along in the car, filled our walls with the melodies that tied the strings of our hearts together. Our friend, Andrew Peterson, is one such singer songwriter and close to all of our hearts. I am so happy to have him as a guest on my podcast today.   The Petersons are kindred spirits and fellow "creatives" in so many areas. They love to feast, talk, read, sing, and create a rich life with a warm welcome to all who would join their community.  I am happy to introduce some of you to Andrew's story, his music and his books, though I am sure many of you have followed him for years as we have. I know this podcast will encourage you.  Clay is a long time supporter of all things Andrew and we have both loved attending Hutchmoot, a gathering of artists, musicians and creatives for many years. Every year we draw closer to the friends we have found in this community.
