with guest Brian Doerksen, Canadian song-writer, instructor, and singer. When hard things happen, a personal response—however that looks—is inevitable. When Brian heard the First Nation Band Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc announce that the remains of 215 children were found at the former residential school in Kamloops, BC, he was deeply impacted. Like many Canadians, he wrestled with what was being uncovered, the role of religious institutions in the injustices done, and what he should do next.Brian Doerksen is a Christian songwriter, recording artist, and songwriting instructor who is well-known for songs such as Refiner's Fire and Hope of the Nations. Brian shares his heart for writing the song 215 and where it has led him in this ongoing, communal journey toward hope for reconciliation.Recommended Resources:215 - official music video, Brian DoerksenEpisode hosted by Shelaine.

Typically, when I'm setting a Scripture to song I'll open up on my laptop, six different translations in columns, and then I'll look for phrasing that seems to sing. And then where I can't find anything in the translations, I will paraphrase it myself. You know, and then some people get, you know, get really uptight, like: Oh, you don't want to change the Word of God! Well, that's actually not a very helpful way of thinking about itbecause every single time we read a Scriptureor we read a new translation of the Scripture, we're interpreting it through even just the way we speak it, so we're constantly interpreting and paraphrasing, but we're respecting the source because we're going...our heart is to convey the dynamic equivalent of what the people in the first culture would have heard when they heard that Scripture to what our people and our culture needs now.---Brian is a songwriter, award-winning recording artist and songwriting instructor (founder of ‘Unlocking Your Songs'). What would the results be if your heart was tested for purity? Jesus clearly knows that we will see God when we have a pure heart. How do we increase the purity level of our hearts so that we can see God clearly? Based on Matthew 5:8, we will dive into what it means to have a pure heart, what our responsibility is, and how to get there. Father, create in me a pure heart... Okay - firstly it's been a while as Joel has been super busy with all the usual end of term activities filling up his calendar. So, apologies for the delay. Also, this is an episode that might be of limited interest as it's on someone who, frankly, many of you may not be aware - the worship leader and songwriter Brian Doerksen. He's been a huge influence on Neil over the last 30 years. Sit back, listen with an open mind and who knows. Finally, Joel's revenges are getting quite mild lately. Perhaps he's run out of awful stuff? My YouTube channel: Pockenrop Joel's YouTube Channel: FoxEatingNuggetsGaming And don't forget to find us on Facebook to chat and debate - maybe.

Peter W. Marty preaches on Exodus. After coming down from the mountaintop, Moses' face was luminescent, radiant with everything that constituted the fullness of God. Brian Doerksen is a songwriter, church music leader, and teacher who recently wrote "215" a call for lament and repentance from within the Canadian church for the atrocities committed against the Indigenous children at numerous church and state run boarding schools. He joins PostConsumer Reports to discuss his process in writing the song, what it means to write from a place of sorrow, and to reminisce with Chris about his past worship songs (those he still sings and those he's moved on from). You can discover Brian's music at his website as well as find out how to watch his "Christmas at Our House" concert film.
We were delighted to host Vineyard songwriter Brian Doerksen on our podcast, as he spoke to us about his heart for worship, what he felt God has been saying in this season, the importance of including lament in our worship and the significance of songwriting and creativity in local churches.

When you've written more than 300 songs sung in churches around the world, it would appear to many people that you've got it all together. But to hear Brian Doerksen talk about it, his songs are a growth out of his very personal and private time with God. So many of these times came through times of grief and hurting. And now, Brian looks at those difficult times as the seeds of Joy that helped spawn songs like "Come, Now is the Time to Worship," "Refiners Fire," and "I Lift My Eyes Up." For the first Encounter meeting of 2021 Esther was planning to talk about new beginnings. However, the current Covid-19 situation caused her to speak about hope instead using a passage in the Lamentations 3:21-26. She gave us 2 actions for the new year: firstly calling to mind who God is, and what He has done for us & promised us; and secondly to wait quietly for God to come through. At the beginning of the meeting we played Jesus, Hope Of The Nations by Brian Doerksen which can be found on YouTube at https://youtu.be/GuK5fZ9Ur9c and at the end we played Cornerstone, which can be found in the Kerith Worship Sets playlist on Youtube at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLe6aDT8QMpW4MFJn9zwTzjBsEOGhhxYR7 and was taken from our service on 19th April 2020.See additional notes at https://kerithcommunitychurch-my.sharepoint.com/:p:/g/personal/encounter_kerith_church/EevzqWlIZMFMlYi_rstqQooBQ_cxIGh_89p9EQ0sSsyPbQ?e=ZOFDhx

Dave and Reb love the Christmas season, and they love the story of Jesus’ coming. For the second year in a row, they have decided to share this story with their podcast listeners, and invite you to picture yourself in the story of Christ’s birth. Are you a shepherd receiving the news, or the Innkeeper perplexed by the young pregnant woman before him? Imagine what it would have been like for any of these people as they became witnesses to this great story of redemption. Pause. Listen or read along. Imagine. Pray. Give thanks. Interspersed in today’s recording are songs from several Christian artists including Brian Doerksen, Amy Grant, For King and Country, and others. Dave and Reb forego talking about money, and instead encourage listeners to focus on the magnificent story of Jesus’ first coming. Aired: December 20th, 2019 on CHRI Radio 99.1FM in Ottawa, Canada. Featuring "Our Father In Heaven" by Brian Doerksen!
With Matt Atkins Back in the 90s well-known music worship leader Brian Doerksen did a musical called "The Father‘s Heart." The music was incredible and it came out of teaching that was going around at the time on the subject of the Father’s heart and God‘s love for us. For a lot of people, including me, it was life-changing as we experienced and understood God’s love in a deeper way. I mention all of that to say that I heard Brian speak about putting that musical together and the way in which the teaching impacted him at a small gathering a couple of months ago. And I had the thought at the time that I would like to speak to my friend Matt Atkins about the subject too because Matt's been teaching on it for probably 30 years to people all over the world. Matt is a good friend, he’s a pastor and a financial planner. For me, this interview was another great reminder to rest and find my identity in God‘s love. I don’t know about you but I can never be reminded about this enough. In this interview, you'll hear us discuss... What does Matt mean by the Father‘s heart? Living with a performance orientation and how a different view of God can help us overcome that. How God loves us just as we are. Doing a sense dive with the word “Father." Dealing with our father issues and using the word "Father" for God. The effects of fatherlessness on society Having experiential knowledge of God not just thinking about God The Trinity and the Fathers' heart and why it is significant. Our emotions and our relationship with God. Maturing in our relationship with God. Living in freedom and love is the foundation. Matt’s calling to be a father God as father and mother The story of the Prodigal Son. How it has everything to do with a loving father. The lost coin. Celebration! The two sons. God’s love and homecoming. Where am I getting my self-definition? Is it God’s love, or failure and shame. How to be. Not what to do. Quotes by Matt: "I began to experience God’s love in the places that I thought God was really disgusted with me about." Teaching on the Fathers' heart is as necessary as it has ever been. The Father to the Son, "You are my dearly loved child and I am so proud of you." "So many Christians obey all the rules of the house, but they never open the fridge and eat all the food that God has provided." "God has always noticed and never left us. God is never surprised. It’s always the same response: God says "I know you, I love you and I have always loved you." For more see FuelRadio.com

Gazing at a bird in flight Soaring through the air Lying down beneath the stars I feel your presence there I love to stand at ocean shore And feel the thundering breakers roar To walk through golden fields of grain 'Neath endless blue horizon's frame Listening to a river run Watering the Earth Fragrance of a rose in bloom A newborns cry at birth I have felt the wind blow, whispering your name I have seen your tears fall, when I watch the rain How could I say there is no God When all around creation calls A singing bird a, mighty tree, the, vast expanse of open sea I love to stand at ocean shore And feel the thundering breakers roar To walk through golden fields of grain 'Neath endless blue horizons' frame I believe, I believe, I believe I believe, I believe I believe just like a child, I believe
