We all know how much it costs to put food on the table these days - and most of us know that the majority of the food we eat in this province comes from outside Newfoundland and Labrador. BUT there's a lot of research going on to improve our self-sufficiency when it comes to food. Grenfell Campus, Memorial University is playing a big role in that. This week, it released a food and agriculture research report. Ian Sutherland is the Vice President of the Campus.

"I should really get more involved in open-source" is something that's always on the back of our minds. You are fully aware of how rewarding it could be but that perfect opportunity to contribute never comes up. Ian Sutherland, a maintainer of Create React App and contributor to NodeJS, used to be in that position. He had always struggled with getting into open source, he wanted to do something substantial but nothing ever came up. One day, he noticed a tiny bug in create react app. Ian quickly fixed it and put in a PR. Once he was past the first PR barrier, making additional ones was so much easier. Fear is a big barrier to entry. People are maybe afraid they're going to do something silly, make a silly mistake and look foolish, but you really have to get over that as well. To get over it try to start small. When you start small, what was once a mountain to climb is now a hill. The stakes are much lower and success is still extremely rewarding!Sometimes, getting involved can happen organically through opportunities from people you meet. Ian got involved with Node randomly at the Vancouver Node Interactive Conference during a collaborator summit. And an open-source raid group was formed in Kent's discord where they collaborate on helping out with various open-source projects. So remember that you don't have to do it alone, and look out for opportunities with others.HomeworkNext time you are hesitant to try something new, try starting smaller!ResourcesHow to get experience as a software engineerNodeJS Tooling GroupKCD DiscordGuest: Ian SutherlandTwitter: @iansuGitHub: @iansuWebsite: iansutherland.caHost: Kent C. Everything that developers do is DX (Developer Experience). But, it can be hard to know when it is appropriate to spend the time to improve the DX at your workplace. You also might be curious about what you can do to enhance the DX. Repetitive tasks are an easy one to look out for. If you find yourself doing something again and again it's probably worth automating. This could come in the form of tests, scripts, generators, and snippets! For example, if you find yourself having to test some state that takes multiple steps to reach on your website, try using Cypress to automate reaching that state! If improving your DX sounds interesting to you, check out this episode where Ian Sutherland chats about a variety of practical things you could be doing to enhance it.HomeworkAutomate a tedious task that you have to do oftenResourcesXKCD Automation ChartGuest: Ian SutherlandTwitter: @iansuGitHub: @iansuWebsite: iansutherland.caHost: Kent C. The fintech industry has rapidly matured in recent years. Once a collection of aspirational early stage founders catering to tech early adopters, fintech companies are increasingly offering highly respected, professional grade solutions to mainstream consumers and businesses. Challenger banks, online lenders, payments companies and API connectivity layers once competed for fringe customers in a handful of urban centers. Now, they’re pursuing global rollouts, pushing $10 billion valuations and piquing the interest of incumbent acquirers from FIS to Fiserv to Visa. How far will private funding take fintech? Will a wave of IPOs follow? Will M&A entice leading startups before their valuations make takeovers uneconomical? What will happen when local fintech successes clash at the global level? This special episode was recorded live at a Rebank event in London hosted by Shearman & Sterling, a global law firm with a specialist fintech practice. Visit fintech.shearman.com to find out more. In this conversation, we're joined by Noel Monro, Director at Rothschild & Co, an investment bank, Tim Levene, CEO of Augmentum Fintech, a venture capital firm, Ian Sutherland, CFO of Tide, a business banking service and Pawel Szaja, Capital Markets Partner at Shearman & Sterling. What will Heaven be Like? : Short Poem by Ian Sutherland Canada There are those of us who believe in God and those of us that don’t. I am one of those that does. And with that belief comes a belief in something called “Heaven”. There is some disagreement about what and where Heaven is. From my readings I have concluded that Heaven is here on Earth, following a moment of change, when all that is bad ceases to be and when all is forever after good. This is my short poem about what this world, Heaven, will be like following the moment of change. We hope you enjoy and be inspired by this little poem by Mr. Sutherland Ian is a lawyer in Toronto, Canada. Grumps & Sweeties; Children's Story Suitable for 3 year + Written and Narrated by Ian Sutherland from Canada Ian is a lawyer in Toronto, Canada. He and his wife, Carol, have five wonderful children and four beautiful grandchildren. About Grumps & Sweeties What type of person do we want our child to grow up to be? This is a story about the most basic of choices that can make all the difference to a person’s happiness and personal development: the choice to be kind, even to those who are not kind to us. Inspiration behind the story: I was doing some philosophical writing one day and stopped when I was finished and thought to myself: “What an important idea that is. But almost no one is ever going to read this and be inspired by it. What can I do to give it some concrete effect?” Then it occurred to me I could take my ideas and express them through a children’s story. So, I immediately sat down and wrote “Grumps & Sweeties”, a story that gets across the incredible importance of kindness both to the individual and to those whose lives they touch. http://www.lulu.com/shop/ian-sutherland/grumps-sweeties/paperback/product-20277968.html http://www.grumpsandsweeties.com/home.html https://happylondonpress.blogspot.com/ https://www.instagram.com/happylondonpress/ https://twitter.com/HappyLDNpress https://www.happylondonpress.com/ https://www.pinterest.co.uk/happyldnpress/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6-N_Ac7zQk&feature=youtu.be https://www.reddit.com/user/HappyLondonPress/draft/74033c78-e693-11e9-ab2b-baf524289879

In this episode we decided to change things up a little and discuss a skirmish/miniature game called Gaslands by Osprey Publishing. This neat little miniature game that uses Hot Wheels or Matchbox cars uses an easy set of rules to play. The setting is a near post apocalyptic setting where deadly races are televised across the Earth. At a local game con, Dundracon, Saul played with his good friend Bay, Augustin his son and Ian with very little prep or terrain. We all had a blast. Jolene pointed out that at a local game store there was going to be a demo of this game. So all three of us went. The people putting on the demo were very well versed in the game and had set up three tables complete with great terrain and painted and "modded" cars with MG's, missles and other weapons. They had great accessories like acrylic templates, special dice and tokens. I even met a friend of mine I hadn't seen in years! We all had a great time. So we decided to talk about it on our podcast. A great thanks to Jay and Chris for putting on a great demo event of Gaslands. Thanks for listening all we ask is that you share this podcast in your social networks we greatly appreciate it. More info about Gaslands at https://gaslands.com/ At https://www.etsy.com you can find great accessories for Gaslands from MRlasershop and FunBoardGames. Ian Sutherland returns to the podcast to share what's working and what isn't for authors on Twitter, and how to maximize your reach on the social media platform.
We’re trying to create a home, but I have things to sort out. The detritus of my life is in storage units and suburban garages. The belongings I packed away as one life stage ended and a new one began; they’re spread around. It makes me feel uneasy. Summer is upon us, our Danish shipment has settled into our new apartment, and I feel ready at last to consolidate. Ready to re-contextualise myself, in my own life story. As you try to contextualize yourself, and our little family that looks different to the ones you see around you. And find your place in our wider family. I have a storage container in Sydney. I moved to Denmark with two boxes and two suitcases. Shipping the rest didn’t make sense. As years passed, with the monthly direct debits adding up, I wished I wasn’t so sentimental. I wished I’d let go from the start! I try not to think about the money, I’ve come this far. I spend another thousand dollars having it brought to Canberra in a truck, the big pieces, the small pieces. It’s a time capsule of my Sydney life. These are the things I spent years collecting, that made me feel like me. I’m back in Surry Hills, in my street, in my tiny terrace house that I loved so much. The memories flood back and it all feels so strange. Once it’s assimilated, there’s more to take care of. My parents broke up when I was 15. It’s not a particularly unusual story. It was a shock. It took time to get over. The family home went up for sale. I packed up my bedroom, my childhood, and put it away. It all went off to my Dad’s new garage. We rediscover treasures, shed what we don’t need or want, we consolidate. I pack some new boxes: For Astrid age 5, For Astrid age 6, For Astrid age 7. For when you’re ready. A childhood of memories, in boxes, for the next generation. This production is made by me, Sophie Harper, in partnership with Wondery. I’m supported by generous listeners. Astrid has asked for something special as a belated 5th birthday present: a podcast episode that’s not boring, for adults. Her story, made for her, with her, for now. So in four weeks, we’ll be back with something a bit different. A special episode of Not By Accident, for kids.
It’s August 2015. We’ve just moved back to Australia from Denmark and it’s strange. You’re ultra-sensitive, fearful, clingy, easily brought to tears. I probably am too. It’s been like this for months with all the change and uncertainty. I’ve hardly told anyone we’re coming. Only the family. I don’t know what’s next for us, I don’t feel particularly proud of myself, being newly unemployed, and I’m so full of questions and big emotions that I don’t feel like socializing. I just need quiet. We surround ourselves with our family, your cousins who you can’t get enough of, your grandparents, your aunts and uncles, to help us find our feet. But I feel a sense of urgency. I need to find a new home, new childcare, new work, new routines, so you feel secure again, as quickly as possible. This production is made by me, Sophie Harper, in partnership with Wondery. In this show I talk to Ian Sutherland who has been using Twitter to grow his author platform for several years. I talk to him about how his Twitter strategy has needed to change due to Twitter clamping down on automated tactics and his new Author Platform service. It’s September 2017. I’ve been feeling recently that it’s important for you understand more of who I am. You see me as a mother, a daughter, an aunt, a friend, a podcaster, a writer. But I’m also a lesbian. You’ve always known, I’ve always told you that if I fall in love one day it will be with a woman. That you won’t ever have a Dad, but maybe one day, if things work out that way, you’ll have two mums. But it’s been abstract for you until now. You’ve only ever had a single mother. I haven't been on a date in your lifetime. It’s become abstract for me too. I miss that part of my identity sometimes, being involved in that community, but I’ve been so caught up with motherhood and work and establishing life in our new home that I’ve put it aside. For later. But maybe later is now. The decade long fight for marriage equality in Australia has finally come to a head. The government, hampered by their own factions, has decided to ask the people once and for all: “Should the law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry? Yes/No.” A one question postal survey, for all voting age Australians. Just tick a box and send it back. There’s no putting it aside now. This production is made by me, Sophie Harper, in partnership with Wondery. In August, clashes between the Burmese government and the ethnic minority Rohingya intensified, leaving casualties and many Rohingya people vulnerable to violence. Since then, over 500,000 Rohingya have fled their home in Myanmar’s Rakhine State. The media and foreign workers have been barred from entering Rakhine, but stories of ethnic cleansing and plunder have emerged. Who, exactly, are the Rohingya and how did this happen? To understand the current crisis, we have to go back in time… This week on War News Radio, our reporters Serena Sung-Clarke and Shiloh Sumanthiran have spoken with experts to understand the Rohingya's history in Myanmar. Tune in to find out more. The background music in this episode was produced by Ian Sutherland on the Free Music Archive.

Total Duration 39:10 Download episode 111 Pulling Back the Curtain on Management Consultants Our guest in this episode is Karen Phelan, author of an entertaining book entitled I'm Sorry I Broke Your Company: When Management Consultants Are the Problem, Not the Solution. Karen pulls back the curtain on an industry from the perspective of an insider. This book is a fun read that, in truth, goes beyond just management consultants. It looks at the ridiculousness of what we call best practices in organizational leadership and management. I look forward to your feedback after you listen to this discussion with Karen.
