#37: The benefits of neutrality with Josh Lifrak

Coaching Through Stories

Very often, our minds are actively focused on different things—events that have already happened, have yet to happen, or something we judge as either positive or negative. We rarely find our minds neutral, and that, in turn, affects how we interact in the present.  A neutral mind leaves us fully in the moment, allowing us to accept what is, not wishing it were something else. Presence enables the mind to focus on what we can control. Our guest today is going to help you and your team find neutrality so that you can achieve your personal and professional goals.  Josh Lifrak has been in the coaching field for 18 years. He has worked with elite athletes and corporate leaders in achieving peak performance and contributed to optimizing many organizational cultures for growth. He is the current Director of Performance and Coaching for Limitless Minds, a health and wellness technology company founded by Denver Broncos quarterback, Russell Wilson and the acclaimed Trevor Moawad, the author of “It Takes What It Takes.” Josh is also the president of Lift-Up Consulting from 2014 to 2019 and has worked in Major League Baseball with the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets, helping both teams with mental performance—even helping the Cubs win a World Series.  Today's episode delves into the importance of a neutral mind and understanding our internal narratives, providing strategies and habits used by elite athletes to excel. Join us!  Key Points:  The importance of having a neutral mind  There is no single factor that yields good performance. It is the accumulation of several things that you can notice by building self-awareness.  Achieving a neutral mind through (1) distancing yourself from what is occurring, and (2) noticing your behavior, what contributed to it, and the things you are grateful for  Episode Highlights  [00:00] Introduction to the episode  [05:02] Josh's work with Limited Minds and the power of a neutral mind  [08:46] Why Josh got into sports psychology and why he decided to leave it  [15:52] What drove Josh in his previous and current work  [21:39] What contributes to high performance in both sports and business?  [23:50] What are some behaviors that can help an individual reach a state of high performance?  [26:47] What Josh learned while working in professional baseball  [30:03] Why having work-life balance helps Josh mentally  [35:37] How Josh helps his clients navigate the ups and downs of work by encouraging focus on the moment no matter the outcome, and why there is no singular factor that yields great performance  [41:08] Arriving at neutral thinking through distance and noticing  [46:54] Josh's recommended readings  [47:41] Conclusion      Resources  “It Takes What It Takes” by Trevor Moawad:  https://www.amazon.com/Takes-What-Think-Neutrally-Control-ebook/dp/B07R8VDNMJ  “Getting to Neutral: How to Conquer Negativity and Thrive in a Chaotic World“ by Trevor Moawad and Andy Staples:  https://www.amazon.com/Getting-Neutral-Conquer-Negativity-Chaotic/dp/006311190X  “The Bomber Mafia” by Malcolm Gladwell: https://www.amazon.com/Bomber-Mafia-Temptation-Longest-Second/dp/0316296619

Is it worth investing in individual stocks or should you simply go with ETFs? Joe has recently parted ways with his financial planner and is beginning to manage his portfolio himself and was wondering about the benefits of these choices.  Tanya Nichols and I will explore Joe's questions as well as others on this episode of Retirement Answer Man. Listen in to hear the benefits of owning ETFs vs individual stocks, how to structure your Roth conversions, and what to do about health insurance before Medicare.  Making decisions is rarely a cut-and-dry process When making decisions, we usually look for a clear answer: yes or no, do it or don't do it, jump or don't jump. However, judgment calls are rarely so simple. Usually, we are operating without all of the pertinent information, so we have to make assumptions about how the future will look.  The process of brainstorming is messy. There is no crystal clear way to go about making decisions, and once you do you probably won't know if you chose correctly.  When confronted with choices you'll want to have a framework to explore decisions in an organized way. Then you'll want to relax and consider all the options. When you take the pressure off you'll have more opportunities to come to a good decision. Next, dive into the process and see what comes. You may explore several different scenarios before coming upon your final decision. What I'm reading My strategy for reading this year has been to make reading my default activity. Reading is what I go to when I'm waiting in line, have spare time at home, or when I'm taking a walk (via audiobooks, of course!). This new mindset has led me to read 33 books so far this year. Today I wanted to share with you the most recent books I have read and my thoughts on them.  Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown is an inspiring book that I highly recommend. It chronicles a member of a crew team in the 1920s and 30s and his life journey from childhood and then on to the 1936 Olympics.  Quit was written by Annie Duke the author of Thinking in Bets. Annie was a professional poker player turned decision-making expert. In this volume, she examines how hard it is to quit something once you have started. Put Your Ass Where Your Heart Wants to Be by Steven Pressfield is a fast read–you could finish it in a day. This is a great book that helps people work on challenging goals. This book will help you get past the resistance.  Courage Is Calling by Ryan Holiday is a book that will enrich your soul.  It Takes What It Takes was written by Trevor Moawad who was a performance coach for elite athletes. This book on mental conditioning promotes the thesis that if you want to be great at something you have to make a choice to do the things to make you great. Making the choice to be exceptional clears the path to greatness because it takes everything else off the table.  The Dichotomy of Leadership by Jocko Willink was written for leaders on the aspects of finding the virtuous mean.  If you have any great book recommendations I'd be happy to hear them. Just head on over the Ask Roger page and leave an audio suggestion or write it in.  OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE OF THE RETIREMENT ANSWER MAN PRACTICAL PLANNING SEGMENT [1:23] On making decisions [4:11] What I've been reading LISTENER QUESTIONS WITH TANYA NICHOLS [19:33] Should Joe invest in individual stocks or ETFs [27:36] What to put in Roth conversions [32:45] What should Todd do about insurance between the ages of 58 and Medicare? If you've been reading along the past few weeks, I hope you have noticed a theme focused on goal-setting, accountability, and choice. The transition to outdoor track leaves us with about 10-11 weeks left of the spring semester. Still plenty of time to address goals, decision-making, and time management strategies for our outdoor season. Hold this thought for a moment. Last week I purchased Getting to Neutral by Trevor Moawad. A couple of years ago he released his best selling book It Takes What It Takes. In Trevor's new book, he shares stories of how coaches have implemented his teachings around the topic of remaining neutral in moments of stress, anxiety, happiness, and joy. On page 30 of Getting to Neutral Trevor included a section about the illusion of choice. Essentially we have choices and decisions to make all throughout the day. In some instances, however, it seems as though we have the illusion of choice. In any endeavor we find value in pursuing, there will be decisions to make along the way. Decisions that on the surface may seem inconsequential in the moment, but that may lead us down a path away from the goal we ultimately aspire to achieve. The illusion of choice. I shared this concept with one of my throwers this week. Along with a couple of snippets from Trevor's Instagram page where he discusses this illusion of choice with Division I football and basketball players. The response I received back from my athlete was, “Coach, I've never thought about it that way before.” Autonomy is something I share quite a bit of with the throwers I coach. We have a specific schedule in place with regards to throwing and weight room times. The events we emphasize during each throwing session might vary based on the physical and mental condition the throwers come to practice in. I believe that flexibility is very important. It allows each thrower to be accountable for their session based on how they feel, whether they will be late because they are coming from a class, leaving early to go to class, etc. Autonomy, in essence, is about choice. Allowing others to dictate the direction (in this case throwing) they want to head down. But sometimes there is the illusion of choice. Something I've never really discussed with all my athletes before, but with a few that had higher aspirations of throwing compared to their peers. In the goal-setting process, when thinking about outcome and process goals, process goals offer a great deal of autonomy to our athletes. Winning those individual moments (process goal items) will give us a better opportunity towards ultimately achieving our outcome goal. There is a choice. But the illusion of choice. Oftentimes in order to achieve our goals we really aren't afforded many choices. You aren't going to throw far (your definition of far) by not throwing. It'll be much more difficult to finish an Ironman Triathlon race if we just show up one day without having trained to swim for 2.1 miles, ride our bikes for 116 miles, and run 26.2 miles all in the same day with time limits. We can say to ourselves that everything will be ok and work out alright, but will it? Getting back to our throwing example, there are certain habits and routines that the very best of the best throwers prioritize in their day-to-day lives. They have a choice to either complete them or not, but not doing so would put them behind their competitors who are going above and beyond to be the best, too! So, when you say you want to be the best, the choice is yours. Or is it.

This week has definitely been an exciting one, finally being back at LMU and seeing people I haven't seen for over a year. And college kids all across the country have been experiencing a similar type return over the last couple weeks. At LMU, Qdoba has hit different and a late night Iggys Diner run has been a hell of an upgrade from the Habit. But I've definitely been a little jealous of the freshman because I felt robbed of a year of college and still feel like we're finishing up that year.In this episode, I'm talking about what I believe many college kids are experiencing right now, which is a lot of excitement but also weird feelings related to Covid. If you've become more aware of how quickly time has been passing and also wish Covid didn't happen during your college years, I could totally relate. And this will be a good listen for anyone who has experienced pandemic life during college and want's to hear some advice about how to handle this change. I use information from Trevor Moawad's book, "It Takes What It Takes," to help uncover the concept of neutral thinking so that we can use this to help smooth the transition back to normal life.

"I have a book recommendation for you," said my buddy Rich. "It Takes What It Takes. How to think neutrally & gain control of your life. " by Trevor Moawad. "Trust me, you'll love it," he promised. That I did...The book is loaded with so much useful information, I didn't know where to start. So why not start with what neutral thinking is. "Neutral thinking is a high performance strategy that emphasizes judgement-free thinking especially in a crises and pressure situation," writes Moawad. We often play where our feet were not where our feet are. Neutral thinking stresses the importance that each situation is independent from the next one. Ever since I read this book, when I feel like I'm about to light someone up, I productively shift into "neutral thinking." I'm telling you, it's a superpower. Connect to Trevor on Twitter @TrevorMoawad & grab a copy of his book here.

All of us have been through so much these last few months with quarantine life, protests, racial inequality, and all the powerful feelings behind centuries of injustice coming to the fore. Some of us can urge you to "be positive" or "adopt a positive mindset" but I know it's not that simple.    When things have been truly challenging in my life those phrases have felt feel empty or even triggering more self-criticism.    Maybe you've had some of the following thoughts.   "Why can't I just be positive?"   "How come my mind always goes back to all the possible the negative outcomes??"   "I've been saying these positive affirmations for weeks but I just don't believe them!!"   "I suck at this. Eff those spirit junkies, they can choke on their positivity!!"   I get it.   And I know many of you are in that space where it feels dark, borderline hopeless, and all this positive talk is like putting lipstick on a pig.   So, with that in mind, I'm sharing the concept of Neutral Thinking.    In this episode, I share what it means and a bit about Trevor Moawad, Mental Conditioning expert, and top coach to pro elite athletes. In 2017 Trevor was named the “Sports World's Best Brain Trainer” by Sports Illustrated.    This guy knows what he's talking about. He's done the research, the experimentation, and has solid examples of why this works.   I recently read Trevor's new book "It Takes What It Takes" and I'm reviewing his book along with two amazing interviews you'll appreciate from the Ed Mylett Show and Impact Theory - both on YouTube.   BIGGEST TAKEAWAYS   #1- NEGATIVE thoughts are 4-7Xs more powerful than positive thoughts.   #2- NEGATIVE thoughts SPOKEN are 40-70Xs more powerful and more likely to come to fruition.   #3- Simply AVOIDING voicing or speaking negatively can do you a world of good even if you're not speaking positively.    Let me restate that last one.   Simply AVOIDING voicing or speaking negatively can do you a world of good even if you're NOT speaking positively.    Mic drop.   This is a short episode. So you'll consider this without me droning on and maybe you'll be inspired to adopt this strategy or get his book to learn more.   Either way, I hope you find something helpful here. This concept has truly helped me stay out of the mental muck.   Enjoy! Steph   p.s. Sports are just as much mental as they are physical. There's a lot one must do to actually train their mind, especially when some of the concepts may seem foreign to them. Like, "Neutral Thinking" for example. This is what Trevor Moawad specializes in. He teaches the power and skill of "neutral thinking." He teaches athletes and trains them on the power of it all. It may seem "different" to the average person, but it's not all that crazy. In fact, you may find yourself doing exactly what I did after reading his book (It Takes What It Takes), taking notes and implementing what I was being taught.  In our interview today, we discuss Trevor's book in more detail and he provides us with some of his awesome knowledge based on the experience that he had in his life while working for some of the best, most well known and most successful programs in College Football.  Don't miss out on what he has to share.  Make sure to follow Trevor on his platforms: Instagram: @trevormoawad and @thinkbig_gofar You can find more about Trevor here: https://moawadconsultinggroup.com/ Please follow Trevor as he continues his work! Trevor Moawad - IT TAKES WHAT IT TAKES Fitness Friday Interview Series Welcome to the Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #446. Today's show is special, with a very special guest, and I know you're going to love it. Our guest today is Trevor Moawad. Trevor Moawad has been hailed as, “The World's Best Trainer” by Sports Illustrated, and is the mental coach to Super Bowl-winning Quarterback Russell Wilson. What secrets for peak performance does he give elite athletes and U.S. Special Forces that we can apply to our own lives? Trevor Moawad discusses with us: -His unique motivational system called Neutral Thinking that changes lives -The three states of truth-based thinking. -How to cope with the “illusion of choice”. -How your language is a predictor of your performance. -How to visualize success and work towards it. -How to develop self-awareness that trumps negativity -How to master conscious competence. You don't need to be a Super Bowl-winning quarterback to take advantage of Trevor's mental training. While you don't need to be a Super Bowl quarterback to take advantage of Trevor Moawad's mental training, available in his new book, IT TAKES WHAT IT TAKES, you really need to give this the mental focus necessary to digest this process and put it into practice. When we talk about focus, I want to tell you that I use a supplement from the sponsor, Organifi. THat's O R G A N I F I. Called Organifi Pure. I mix it with water and drink it in the morning, before an interview, or anytime I need to focus. It's all-natural, 100% USDA Certified Organic, and filled with superfoods and organic compounds shown to increase brain health and ward off forgetfulness. You'll hear this from Trevor Moawad in just a bit, but the mental focus is so important. You need the fuel to make it all work. Organifi Pure is just amazing: * Organifi Pure contains 11 superfoods (see page 2) and compounds for brain health and mental performance. * Organifi Pure is clinically proven to boost BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor) by up to 206%. * Drink Organifi Pure to think sharper, boost memory and impress your coworkers. * And, the lemonade flavor is real, and it's delicious. What's the point of having all these amazing ingredients in a product if it doesn't taste good? I use it as part of my daily routine, and this is what it does: it just staves off forgetfulness, and makes me so much sharper throughout the day. I still make notes about every interview I do, but I find now, with Organifi Pure, I have the mental focus, all day clarity, and memory to keep up with all my guests. Organifi Pure is USDA organic, and Pure has all these great ingredients, like neuro factors, which increases learning and the survival of brain cells and is clinically proven, plus Baobab, which aids in digestion, and Lion's Mane Mushroom which is increasingly important as we in the Not Old Better Show audience age, to keep our memories, alertness, and job performance at a top-level.

Be positive. Think on the bright side. We've all heard advice like this at some point in our lives. We also know that changing your mindset isn't as easy as flipping a switch. While studies do show that thinking and speaking negatively can have a hugely adverse effect on us, “being positive” just isn't a realistic solution for many people. Today's guest, Trevor Moawad, emphasizes a different strategy: neutral thinking. Trevor is the founder of Moawad Consulting Group. He specializes in mental conditioning for high performing athletes like Russell Wilson as well as military and business organizations. Trevor is also the author of the upcoming book, It Takes What It Takes. Readers will learn how to apply his methods to their own lives in order to overcome challenges -- and thrive.
