This episode is one of four in a special series from enfleshed called "Our Table: Trans Spirituality Conversations." Contributors to this episode include J Mase III and Rev. KC Slack. Hosted by our first trans faith intern, Nite Hunt, Our Table is a set of conversations among trans and gnc folks about spirituality, joy, ritual, gender, and sex. Nite explains: “Though our stories and presence are often erased, trans spiritual and religious people exist and always have. Many of us have found spiritual wisdom and practices to be essential sources of strength, comfort, nourishment, and solidarity. However, because many religious spaces still don't welcome us or the conversations we want to have, it's difficult to find resources for exploring our spirituality together.”

J Mase III lost his father, grandmother, and job in 2012. His new book And Then I Got Fired: One Transqueer's Reflections on Grief, Unemployment & Inappropriate Jokes About Death is an exploration of his grief as well as a love letter to other trans people experiencing loss. We're talking about how death is the ultimate abandonment, how our job as the living is to continue healing after death, and why the pain of black and trans grief often goes unseen. Also this week, I'm talking about the grief of being queer and sharing some personal stories related to my sexuality and the death of my mom. Join me, Crystal Cheatham, as I catch up with an old friend. J Mase III is a black trans poet and together with fellow performer and spiritual guide, Lady Dane Figueroa we tackle common LHM themes on God, sex and the Bible. I can't help making fun of Mase but we all take our shots at the imperfections of religion, sex culture and Dan Savage (because why not). Hear how toxic religion affects the black trans community and how they intend to credential those who walk their same path. This episode is fire ya'll. I hope you laugh as hard as we did.
Episode 14 features a dialogue between J Mase III and I. In this episode, we talk about love as survival, remembrance, and care.
Let's be honest. Relationships between queer communities and communities of faith are often icy at best, and outright antagonistic at worst. So where does that leave queer people of faith? This week, We Want the Airwaves' new East Coast correspondent Heidi Andrea Restrepo Rhodes interviewed transqueer poet J Mase III to find out how being raised by a Baptist mom and a father in the Nation of Islam shaped his art and his activism.
