I know the term “underrated” is often overused but certainly not in this case.Based on comic maestro Cullen Bunn's hit series “The Empty Man”, the film version came out in 2020 and was sadly overlooked. And folks, if you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and watch it NOW. I don't mind. Pause this and go watch it.What you will see is not only one of the most truly gripping, atmospheric, legitimately unnerving and beautifully made genre films in recent memory. It will also be one of those movies I promise you will want to talk to someone about as soon as the credits roll. This is a really important genre film.Joining me to discuss the film including the many ways in which is was so terribly mishandled by the studio system and the many other challenges that went into making “The Empty Man” is the films writer and director, David Prior.David and I discuss his vision for the film version of the comic, working with a great lead actor like James Badge Dale to craft a character who is never quite who he seems and what went so terribly wrong with the films release to the point that a movie made by a major studio with a reasonable budget as far as horror films standards go didn't even receive any sort of physical media release. That's right. Not even a barebones DVD. For fans of the movie, this episode may be the most insightful look into the film you can find as there's no commentary track with David or any of the extras we've become accustomed to when we want to learn about how a movie got made. Fishery Service Agent Jackie Quiñones is off the wagon and off the force in the final season of “Hightown,” but that doesn't stop her from careening into the dark underbelly of picture-perfect Cape Cod to save a missing woman and a murdered sex worker. Meanwhile, her former colleagues Ray Abruzzo and Alan Saintille are focused on taking down drug syndicates, but despite their best efforts, the drugs keep flowing. This attracts Shane Frawley, a gangster from Boston looking to cut himself in on the Cape's drug trade - and making an enemy of Osito while he's at it. Alliances are made and old loyalties are questioned in this beautiful but corrupt place where nothing is as it seems.

In this episode a retro review was in order and that retro review goes to Brad Pitt's World War Z. In this 2013 zombie apocalypse summer hit movie, Pitt plays Gerry Lane a ex-U.N. investigator who suddenly finds himself re-employed zombie attacks start. He has to protect his wife and daughters, not to mention saving the world by finding a cure. This sends him all over the globe to gather clues while trying not to get turned by the millions of super-fast, super-strong zombies. The conversation also takes a look at some of his more memorable roles and films, including his role in Martin Scorsese's The Departed opposite Matt Damon, the NBC series The Black Donnellys, HBO's WWII mini-series The Pacific, Joe Carnahan's The Grey - where he recounts a story about the cast and crew passing bottles of liquor on the flight to Smithers, British Columbia, and his experience working on Michael Bay's 13 Hours and Gore Verbinshi's The Lone Ranger, which ties into 1923 as he dealt with some of the same stunt people on both. However several scenes feature low frequencies such as explosions, car crashes, gunshots, hordes of tumbling zombies, and exploding grenades. In a few scenes it was difficult to make out some lines of dialog. It sounded a little muffled and was lost to the background. The rear channels are not used as often as they could have been, but they do a good job filling the room with the sounds of helicopters, broken glass, screaming crowds, airplane propellers, soft falling rain, and of course screaming congregation of unhappy zombies. A few colors are more noticeable than others like yellow taxi cabs, glowing red road flares, and one short view of some green grass. There are numerous dark scenes and it does a decent job of handling it but a few details do get lost in the shadows. The clarity is mediocre for a Blu-ray. It won't wow you but it's good enough to see, loose hairs in the wind, individual grey hairs in Pitt's beard, wrinkles on skin, and floating ash. It Outbreak (8:31), a detailed look at the making of the film's opening sequence. The Journey Begins (8:39) focuses on building several of the visual effects and shooting the scenes that end the first act and play through part of the second. Behind the Wall (9:41), a thorough examination of making the extended Israeli action sequence. Camouflage (9:25) guides viewers through the making of the film's extended airliner sequence and third act elements. Movie – 3.5 Stars (out of 5) Review World War Z is a high budget zombie movie with the tone of an action drama instead of a horror film. Don't expect this PG-13 movie to be filled with gore and blood it spends more time solving the zombie problem than it does fighting them. Having an Oscar nominated actor like Brad Pitt in a zombie movie makes it more terrifying since he is able to emote terror and disgust in ways I haven't seen in a horror film before. It's a unique film that shows how different countries handle the “Z” problem, and it makes the scope of the movie seem very large. The plot is really four different stories that all star Pitt's character.
