David was super impressed when he drove the 2024 Toyota Tacoma and we wrote about it, a lot. Right after David took his turn in the Tacoma we had a chance to talk to two designers from the legendary CALTY design studio at the LA Auto Show and they provided a ton of great detail on how it came to exist. This podcast, presented by our friends at Marble, was shot a few weeks ago and features our own Beau Boeckmann, David Tracy, and Jason Torchinsky before his circulatory system went full Lucas. As our guests we've got both Adam Rabinowitz, exterior chief designer, and Benjamin Jimenez, General Manager at CALTY. As Spotify Wrapped comes flying into your inboxes, the Unnamed Automotive Podcast can hold off no longer with this weeks episode. The "No Procastination Special" shows up with roughly 40 minutes of focused car-talk, all centering around two (or maybe three) vehicles. Hey, if you listen carefully you may find real consumer advice here... First up Benjamin has plenty to say about the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE 500 4Matic SUV. Despite its wacky name, this all-electric SUV should be a highlight in the world of luxury EVs, but there are a few factors that stand in its way, including its price, performance and technology. It all has our hosts asking: "How much is that three-pointed star badge really worth?" Then Sami chimes in with his experience in the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Sport, and compares it to the recently reviewed 2024 Hyundai Kona. To make things extra-thorough, Benjamin discusses his time in the 2024 Crosstrek base model, and the two come to many of the same conclusions, which, given the long history of this podcast, is very rare. Fresh off last term's win in an Alabama redistricting case, civil rights groups returned to the Supreme Court to argue that voting maps drawn by South Carolina Republicans disenfranchise Black voters and should be redrawn. But arguments in Alexander v. South Carolina State Conference on Oct. 11 seemed to favor the GOP-led legislature despite a deferential standard that limits the justices' ability to second guess a lower court ruling siding with the challengers. Holtzman Vogel partner Jason Torchinsky, who filed an amicus brief on the GOP side, joins the latest episode of Cases and Controversies to discuss the case that could help determine which party controls the US House after next year‘s election. In its most recent round of redistricting, the South Carolina legislature changed the demographic of a congressional district, resulting in a number of Black voters being moved to a different district. Challengers argued that the state violated the 14th Amendment by unlawfully racially gerrymandering the district; while lawmakers countered that political, not racial, factors motivated the redistricting. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court handed down a major voting rights decision in the Allen v. Milligan case. In a 5-4 ruling, the Court upheld Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and found that Alabama's 2022 congressional map likely violated Section 2. This comes as a surprising victory for voting rights and the Thornburg v. Gingles (1986) test after a series of other Supreme Court cases that have narrowed the scope of the Voting Rights Act, including the Brnovich v. DNC case in 2021 and Shelby County v. Holder in 2013. The decision was written by Chief Justice John Roberts and was joined by Justice Brett Kavanaugh along with the liberal justices. In this episode, Jason Torchinsky of Holtzman Vogel and Rick Hasen of UCLA School of Law join host Jeffrey Rosen to break down the Allen decision; discuss why Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Kavanaugh voted with the liberal justices to uphold the Gingles framework; what other conservative justices Thomas, Alito and Gorsuch wrote in dissent; and what this means for redistricting and voting rights in 2024 and beyond.  Resources: Allen v. In July 2020, speaking via video at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, Elon Musk stated that "I'm extremely confident that level five - or essentially complete autonomy - will happen and I think will happen very quickly." While this is exciting, we still don't have a clear idea of how or when AI vehicles will become a normal part of our everyday lives. In this episode, we look to explore how far away a future of fully autonomous vehicles really is, where we will see this transition first, and what it will take for us to arrive there. We also debate whether we could live in a future where humans will no longer be allowed to drive and AI-operated vehicles become legally mandatory. To do this we invited a number of experts on the show to share their thoughts on this topic. In this episode, we are joined by Jason Torchinsky, the Senior Editor for the automotive technology site Jalopnik, and the author of Robot, Take the Wheel: The Road to Autonomous Cars and the Lost Art of Driving. That red stripe is likely a nod to the hot hatch version dubbed Renault 5 GT Turbo back in the day, which may hint its modern-day EV counterpart will spawn a performance derivative.  We’re also hearing there are plans to bring back the Renault 4 as well, but details are limited at this point."   Auoblog said: "Viewed from the side, the concept's silhouette echoes its predecessors with a short front overhang and a C-pillar slanted at about 45 degrees. Its relatively tall vertical rear lights are an unmistakable nod to the Super Cinq (the 5's were smaller), while the emblem placed on the passenger side of the hatch creates another visual link between the two cars, though we didn't expect to find it out back. It's inspired by the face-lifted Super Cinq, which went on sale in 1987 with a new-look grille that placed the Renault logo next to the driver-side headlight."   https://www.motor1.com/news/466116/renault-5-electric-supermini-preview/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-news   https://www.autoblog.com/2021/01/14/renault-5-prototype-electric-car-lecar-super-cinq/   RENAULT DOUBLES EV SALES IN EUROPE "On the European electric market, the Renault brand doubled its sales and confirmed its leadership with 115,888 electric vehicles sold. The Renault Twingo Electric and Dacia Spring will enhance the Group's electric vehicle offering in 2021. In addition to its electric range (BEV), Renault has been offering an E-TECH hybrid and plug-in hybrid on its best-sellers (Clio, Captur & Megane estate) since the summer. The brand is thus establishing itself on the market for hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles with more than 30,000 sales in Europe, representing 25% of order volumes for these vehicles. During the first half of 2021, the E-TECH range will be expanded with the arrival of the Renault Arkana E-TECH hybrid, Captur E-TECH hybrid and Megane sedan E-TECH plug-in hybrid."   https://en.media.groupe.renault.com/news/worldwide-sales-results-2020-07de-989c5.html   ALPINE AND LOTUS TO JOINTLY DEVELOP ELECTRIC SPORTSCAR The Alpine and Lotus teams will conduct a comprehensive feasibility study for the joint engineering, design and development of an EV sportscar by leveraging the resources, expertise and facilities of the respective entities in both France and the UK. Alpine and Lotus will also explore the development of a joint services offer combining their engineering expertise. A collaboration to leverage Alpine’s motorsport platform covering Formula One to Formula E and Endurance is also under study.   RUN ON LESS SHOWS HOW FAR ELECTRIC TRUCKING HAS COME IN 2021 "RMI and NACFE are announcing the third in their bi-annual Run on Less trucking demonstration run series. This year’s Run on Less will focus on electric trucking, with 10 dedicated trucks and their drivers reporting real-time data to show the current state of electric trucking technology in the freight industry." says CleanTechnica: "Electric (RoL-E) demonstration vehicles will include electric vans, medium-duty box trucks, and heavy-duty trucks moving freight in a variety of conditions and geographic areas. In order to increase electric truck adoption and deployment, RoL-E will help fleets, charging infrastructure companies, utility companies, and policymakers better understand the current benefits and challenges of hauling freight with electric trucks."   https://cleantechnica.com/2021/01/13/run-on-less-shows-how-far-electric-trucking-has-come-in-2021/   TESLA TO RECALL 158,000 CARS BECAUSE TOUCHSCREEN FAILURES "The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration asked Tesla to recall 158,000 Model S and Model X cars because of “media-control unit” — the touchscreen and associated tech— failures." reports Jalopnik: "Tesla doesn’t do model years, but NHTSA still does, saying the cars involved are 2012-2018 Model S and 2016-2018 Model X. Over 12,000 Model Ss and Xs have had this failure happen (that we know of), as my colleague Jason Torchinsky reported in November. Also as Jason wrote then, this is a weirdly preventable issue, since Tesla knew that the flash memory would fail at some point, but miscalculated how long it would take in the life cycle of the car."   https://jalopnik.com/the-feds-want-tesla-to-recall-158-000-cars-because-touc-1846054594   TESLA ADDS EUROPEAN DEALERSHIPS "Tesla expanded the number of stores and service centers it operates in Europe by a third last year in preparation for selling the new Model Y compact crossover." says Automotive News Europe: "Tesla opened 40 new outlets in Europe last year, for a total of 161 in the region, the company said. A majority offer both sales and service functions, it added. Tesla affirmed its promise to start production of the Model Y at its new factory in Berlin in July this year. Can American auto workers get along with their new Japanese bosses? That was the big question in the mid-1980's as Ron Howard's Gung Ho, inspired by real events, tried to tackle the subject as an inspirational comedy. In hindsight, it's an awkward movie to watch, riddled with racist/xenophobic assumptions about both the Japanese and American auto workers. But hey, we need to talk about the cars! And joining us is Jason Torchnisky, Jalopnik writer, published author of Robot Take the Wheel, and legendary Changli owner! The cars of the fictional Assan Motors are represented mostly by Fiat Regattas, but the movie has quite a few interesting featured cars! Find Jason Torchinsky at Jalopnik.com or on social media @JasonTorch / @JasonTorchinsky and remember to subscribe to Reels and Wheels and leave some feedback!

Sean Carroll's Mindscape: Science, Society, Philosophy, Culture, Arts, and Ideas

I've decided to officially take the plunge into the world of podcasting. The new show will be called Mindscape, and will mostly consist of me talking to smart people about interesting ideas. (Occasionally it will be me talking by myself about ideas of questionable merit.) I'm a grizzled veteran at appearing on other podcasts, and it's past time I sat in the director's chair here. [smart_track_player url="http://traffic.libsyn.com/seancarroll/episode-zero-audio.mp3" artist="Sean Carroll" social_gplus="false" social_email="true" tweet_text="Sean Carroll's Mindscape Podcast, Episode 0: Welcome!" hashtag="mindscapepodcast" ] Today I'm just releasing a short teaser podcast, in both audio (bottom of this post) and video (right here) form. Next week will be a more official launch, with several real episodes, all of which I had enormous fun recording. FAQ: It won't just be about physics, although physics will naturally appear. Indeed, the opportunity to talk about things other than physics is a large part of my motivation here. I have plans/hopes to talk to historians, psychologists, biologists, philosophers, artists, filmmakers, neuroscientists, economists, writers, theologians, political scientists, musicians, and more. The video above is just to lure you in. Almost all episodes will be audio-only. I don't have a strict release schedule, that will depend on other obligations. I would guess one every two weeks, perhaps weekly if things start going super-well. (So if you want more episodes, encourage others to subscribe!) Typical episodes will be an hour long, at least to start, though don't hold me to that. Right now you can both subscribe to the RSS feed, and/or to an email list, both available on the sidebar to the right. If you join the email list, you can choose to either get just the episodes as they are released, or just special announcements relevant to the podcast, or both. Soon I hope to be available on iTunes and Google Play and various other platforms, but I'm not sure how quickly that happens. There won't be any ads to start, but I am planning to monetize it if things go well. These microphones don't pay for themselves. I'm not really in it for the money, but if money starts rolling in, my incentive to keep going will be correspondingly boosted. Feel free to leave comments and discuss individual episodes as they appear. There is also a subreddit which might make a good conversation spot. Like everything else I do that isn't physics research, this is a hobby, and might have to take a temporary back seat if things get busy. But so far it's been a lot of fun, and I'm excited to see where it will go. Show notes for this episode: I mention a study of the different ways in which artists and regular people look at images, which you can read about here. And we're ready to go! Thanks to everyone who has helped me set this up, including Gia Mora (web and technical help), Julian Morris (prodding), Cara Santa Maria (podcasting wisdom), Jason Torchinsky (art), Ted Pyne (music), Robert Alexander (gear), and Jennifer Ouellette (patience, support, wine). Comment here if you have suggestions, for good ideas to talk about, good people to talk to, or format/technical wisdom. (As always, demands that I not talk about this or that will be summarily deleted; those are my choices to make, not anybody else's.) Still very new at this, mistakes both technical and judgmental are practically guaranteed to happen, but I'm optimistic that it should be a fun ride. Sid and James are joined by Jason Torchinsky of Jalopnik to talk about the movie that started the Herbie franchise, the awesome cars that played supporting roles, and the surprisingly great racing scenes of The Love Bug. Not only is Jason a writer for Jalopnik, but he's also a VW Beetle owner and he's unusually passionate about this movie. When you give The Love Bug a second viewing as an adult, you start to understand why. Herbie is up against some amazing race competition - C2 Corvettes, Jaguars, Lamborghinis, and of course the ultra rare, Buick V8 powered Apollo GT. Racing scenes convey a sense of danger and excitement that you honestly wouldn't expect from a kids movie, and Herbie - a sentient VW that doesn't talk, manages to convey quite a few complex emotions, including a pretty intense suicide attempt.  The laughs are there, too - with Buddy Hackett shedding his foul-mouth stand-up persona to play the silly sidekick and David Tomlinson flying headfirst into the villain role with dastardly brilliance.  Find Jason and his wonderful articles at www.jalopnik.com! Subscribe to Reels and Wheels on iTunes or Stitcher and leave us some feedback! @ReelsandWheels, @SidBridgeComedy and @S2KJames

After a hiatus while Sam finished off a flurry of travel, the team is back for episode 48. Sam drives the 2017 Mazda CX-5 while Dan gets the Hyundai Ioniq and Mitsubishi Outlander (is it just me or does it seem like Mitsubishi has sent its entire press fleet to New England for Dan to drive?). While in Napa to drive the new Nissan Leaf, Sam talked with Jalopnik's Jason Torchinsky about what defines a station wagon and picks up the conversation with Dan. Lincolns have names again, VW is building EVs, Sam rides in automated Chevrolet Bolt and Infiniti launches its variable compression engine. Our Sponsors:* Check out Express VPN: https://expressvpn.com/WHEELBEARINGSAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
