Grunge. Flannel. Generation X. In 1993, Seattle was the capital of the world, Nirvana was king, and slackers were everywhere. When the Red Hot organization, a group of activists dedicated to raising money and awareness of AIDS, released their third compilation CD featuring the biggest bands of the era--Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Beastie Boys, The Breeders, Nirvana and more it quickly became the touchstone of a generation. Rolling Stone called No Alternative a "jaw-dropping compilation of musical gems." This book takes a look back at what happened to the bands involved with No Alternative. It includes new interviews with the musicians and others behind the record, and chronicles the downfall of an industry, the taming of a devastating illness, and the arrival of another global pandemic. It's about growing up, saying goodbye, and proving once more that you can't go home again (even if that's where you left all of your CDs). This episode is a conversation about peace, reconciliation and innovative storytelling featuring pioneering producer Jeff Gomez and Billy Price who is Creative Director of Unrival, the non profit organisation dedicated to empowering peacebuilders and the process of peacebuilding across the world. During Future of Film Africa 2024, Jeff and Billy discuss their unique collaboration and how they are applying a new modality of storytelling that champions reconciliation and understanding. In particular, we learn about process of peacebuilding and the concept of 'Just Peace' - and how Jeff's work in developing 'Collective Journey' narratives intersects with and supports this activity.. In a discussion that also encompasses the craft of transmedia and worldbuilding, we hear how producers and creators can apply and benefit from these strategies in their own work and also learn how Jeff is using them in projects such as ULTRAMAN RISING to great critical and commercial success. This episode was recorded as part of Future of Film Africa 2024 in partnership with Sèmè City of the Republic of Benin. More About Jeff Gomez and Billy Price Jeff Gomez is President and CEO of Starlight Runner Entertainment, a leading producer of highly successful fictional "Worlds," which maximize the value of intellectual properties by preparing them for licensing, merchandising and extension across multiple media platforms. Starlight Runner then utilizes a variety of technologies as well as a proprietary cross-media rollout technique designed to produce these "Worlds," directly extending them onto the Internet and mobile phone platforms, as well as into animated and live-action feature films, branded and sponsored digital content, video games, books and graphic novels, toys and merchandise. These in concert are also uniquely designed by Starlight Runner to validate and celebrate audience participation. The company's clients include The Walt Disney Company, Comcast, Mattel, Hasbro, and Scholastic. Jeff is also known for developing the rich interactive worlds of Hot Wheels for Mattel, Magic: The Gathering for Hasbro, The Black Belt Club for Scholastic, Turok Dinosaur Hunter for Acclaim Entertainment, and Team GoRizer for The Walt Disney Company. Jeff co-wrote and produced Hot Wheels World Race, a computer-animated feature and series for Cartoon Network. He is currently developing a slate of original "World" properties with Starlight Runner and various partners to be produced in the coming year. Billy Price is a multidisciplinary creative whose longing for a more just and peaceful world led him beyond the typical bounds of a professional creative when he began advocacy and relief work for refugees and asylum seekers. His efforts were instrumental in the formation of an innovative aid program in Juarez, MX— providing food, sustainable energy, and education to vulnerable migrant families. Other professional endeavors have involved collaborations with Grammy-winning bands, non-profits, startups, and healthcare companies, as well as his personal projects as a screenwriter, actor, and director (credited in film as William Price, III). Friendship has provided a fertile ground for creative endeavors throughout Billy's career. Many of his proudest professional accomplishments, from building an iPhone app to producing and directing film work, have been collaborative efforts with cherished friends he would just as readily spend a celebratory Sunday afternoon with. Billy's commitment to creativity in the context of bondedness bears itself out in his approach to the Film Lab, a collaboration with Justice Film Festival where participants celebrate the power of transformative, nonviolent storytelling together. His vision for the film lab is to cultivate a community of filmmakers dedicated to justice and peace and innervate an uprising of films from diverse and mutually empowering voices.

Frank Ferrante, Jeff Gomez, and JR Martinez have all had their own experiences rewriting their stories, and what they say will help you rewrite yours. JR Martinez says, “I think that's what drives me to this day, is I want to be that old man on the rocking chair and I'm on the front porch one day, and not asking "What if? What if? what if?" I want to be the guy that said, "I tried it. I didn't probably complete it, but at least I gave it a shot," you know? And that's what matters more than anything. You have to ask yourself, the question is, whatever you're unhappy about, is this what you want your life to become?” In this episode, you'll learn: - Find where you belong. Life is not linear - Don't let your past dictate who you're going to be - Acknowledge what is holding you back in life and confront it instead of ignoring it - First 2 chapters of your life are written for you, you get to write the rest If you want to watch the full episodes: Frank Ferrante, Overcoming addiction and obesity | Spartan Up - https://youtu.be/ShLTsl9KSRo 160: Jeff Gomez | Rewrite Your Story - https://youtu.be/UYCupGKzwr4 JR Martinez Look Beyond the Scars and Overcome Any Adversity - https://youtu.be/86IIt1jUfco SPONSOR This episode of Spartan Up is brought to you by DUROLANE, a single injection that may provide up to six months 1 of relief from osteoarthritis knee pain. In a recent conversation with Molly Sullivan, VP of Brand, Content, and Creative at Pegasystems, she said that before people buy products and services they first buy into ideas. And in order for them to want to buy from you, you have to have the kind of ideas that make them want to buy what you're selling. And one way, a good way, for them to buy into your ideas is to be an effective storyteller that can share a compelling theme or narrative in a way that makes people not only listen, but also be a meaningful partner in charting the path they go on with you. Having a meaningful narrative and being able to share it in a way that connects and enlists your target audience in developing that narrative is becoming incredibly important in building a community around your business. And being able to tell/share that grand story in a comprehensive and compelling way calls for a strategy that uses a variety of formats, channels, apps and any other way necessary to get connect your ideas to the right folks. A person who has been helping companies tell stories, from Walt Disney movies (like Pirates of the Caribbean), 20th Century Fox (James Cameron's Avatar), Showtime (Dexter), Microsoft (Halo) and even Coca-Cola, is transmedia storyteller expert Jeff Gomez, who is also CEO of Starlight Runner Entertainment. I recently had a LinkedIn Live conversation with Jeff to learn more about what transmedia storytelling is, who it can work for, and how companies of any size can leverage it to more meaningfully connect with an audience.
Join us and transmedia producer, Jeff Gomez as we explore the story world of Ultraman! An IP that has existed since the 1960's, Ultraman has gone through 3 generations with 16 total Ultraman reincarnations. Ultraman is the Japanese Superman, hailing from Nebula M78, who defend humanity against a legion of destructive giant monsters and scheming aliens called Kaiju. Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/akL0hZCHhvcWhile we spoke on some of the lore and current storylines of Ultraman, we primarily focused on the backend of transmedia (Jeff Gomez doesn't need our help with content) and all the great things his company, Starlight Runner, are doing to engage American audiences with an iconic Japanese IP. They are developing an audience building platform, Iceberg Theory, that creates an interactive live streaming experience, which has grown their audience during the pandemic. Soon to be available to all creators, the goal of the platform is to help creators build audiences with new IP. In addition to Ultraman and its transmedia workings, we spoke about how any story world needs to find its Apostles and the potential of the metaverse.Take a listen with a notepad, you'll want it!#ultraman #jeffgomez #starlightrunner #icebergtheory #kaiju #storyworld #storytelling #transmedia #collectivejourney #artists #creatives #worldbuilder #producers #indie #newconcepts #storyworldexplorersSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/storyworldexplorers)

In Ep 55 of UNSUGARCOATED with Aalia, your favorite host sits down with Starlight Runner CEO, Jeff Gomez, a film and TV producer who overcame disability and a hard scrap childhood (12:35) to work on some of the biggest franchises from Disney, 20th Century Fox, Sony, Mattel, and Nickelodeon. They share a tragically honest conversation about bullying, abuse, and the power of storytelling to provide escape and growth to both victims and perpetrators(14:00). Gomez tells Aalia how transmedia— storytelling across platforms like film, TV, books, and even toys— is pushing Hollywood to listen to its viewers and create the content that is meaningful to them(19:21). Gomez works to ensure that at the heart of these juggernaut franchises is storytelling that creates what he calls a “Modality of Reconciliation.”(23:00) Gomez shares how his modality of reconciliation applies to his anti-bullying work in schools, as well, creating stories and spaces of empathy(26:01)where victims can heal and bullies can grow(15:17). You won’t want to miss this conversation with an unlikely Hollywood heavy-weight, all about empathy, overcoming,(34:58) and the power of UNSUGARCOATED storytelling. To learn more about Jeff Gomez’s work, visit his website for Starlight RunnerFor more information on UNSUGARCOATED Media or your award-winning host, go to www.UnsugarcoatedMedia.com and stay connected with Aalia on IG: @aalia_unsugarcoated. Today we're doing a deep dive into how storytelling shapes, influences and creates our worldview. Jeff Gomez, one of the world's leading experts in transmedia storytelling, has helped build the story universes of famed franchises, IPs, brands such as Avatar, Transformers, Spider-Man, Halo, Splinter Cell, Coca-Cola, Nike, and many more. We also ask Jeff why we are so attracted to dark stories? Why are we compelled to consume it and share it? We also ask him how we convince Hollywood executives to green light Latino stories, and why it is of the utmost importance we challenge our reality. Starlight Runner CEO and film producer Jeff Gomez returns with another film for us to dig into and this one will blow your mind! Come take a listen as we discuss "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" a musical based upon a Broadway play directed by and starring the writer/creator of the stage production. A combo you might not think would work out so well, but here transforms itself into one of my favorite viewing experiences since we started this show.
After a short hiatus, we're back with very special guest and CEO of Starlight Runner, Jeff Gomez. Join us as we jump into the first of two socially impactful film choices from Jeff and we start in New York City in the late 1960s with the John Schlesinger classic, "Midnight Cowboy." Listen in and find out why this film is still so important today.
Jeff Gomez is CEO of Starlight Runner and one of the world’s leading experts in story and narrative design. He works with executives, visionaries, and global leaders to develop vast fictional story universes on properties like Avatar, Pirates of the Caribbean, Transformers and Spider-Man This conversation is really an exploration of narrative design. In particular, Jeff describes how conceiving and developing stories as worlds that can be told across multiple platforms can unlock incredible value for creators and brands. We also discuss the movement of audiences to participants and how, as storytellers we can not only engage and learn from the audience as well as harness this incredible feedback in our work. This leads us to explore what Jeff refers to us the Collective Journey narrative modality which, he argues, is a more relevant way to think about story in today’s hyper connected world. We dig into what this means for film, for culture and how we are moving from Hollywood-centric storytelling to more global, diverse and inclusive narratives. www.futureoffilm.live
We speak with Jeff Gomez, who is a veteran transmedia producer for some of Hollywood's biggest film franchises (ex. Pirates of the Caribbean, Avatar), video games (Halo, Splinter Cell), and toys (Mattel & Hasbro). Jeff is a big believer in the potential for audio to become an integral part of large scale branded storyworlds where the audience "dwells" within media content as they consume it.
How do you find the things you love? Films, music, products, people, food? More and more, we're turning to the internet to find pretty much anything. Or, we may not even be looking for things anymore. Amazon, Google, Spotify, Netflix are all recommending things, to varying degrees of success. Social apps recommend people we would like to follow. I presume that dating apps are showing you profiles based on a similar model, trying to connect you to people you would be more likely to choose. Often, I scratch my head at recommendations, wondering what signals I provided that led to whatever the app has sent me. I am pleased when a song Spotify introduces me to a song that I never heard before and I love it. It's delightful the one-in-twenty times that iOS suggests I want to set an alarm clock and I actually do. So far, I haven't experienced a recommendation so memorable, that I can recall it now. As with a lot of the brain power I've outsourced to software, these moments remain there, hovering in the code. No Spotify recommendation has replaced the sensation of a friend telling you that you should listen to X the moment they learned you loved Y, or the mythical record store clerk (sorry Millennials and younger, I am old. You missed this entirely.)When Spotify does nail it, and recommends something I love, like this, I'm at a loss. I would share it with my friends who love music if I could figure out exactly why Spotify chose it for me. The context around the thing can make the thing itself more important. That's why I wanted to speak to Jeff Gomez of Starlight Runner Entertainment. He's been working on taking stories we know, and building on them. Adding context. Connecting them beyond their initial container. You can read a transcript of this episode here at adampierno.com Get full access to The Strategy Inside Everything at specific.substack.com/subscribe
Writer and Transmedia Producer Jeff Gomez joins Chris to talk in depth about Ultraman, translating comics to the big and small screens, and they discuss The Boys, Doom Patrol, Watchmen, The Umbrella Academy, Harley Quinn, and DC and Marvel continuity, including where Ultraman may fit in.
In a perfect lead into the month of October, we continue our discussion with Starlight Runner head honcho Jeff Gomez about another one of his faves. So, yeah...his guilty pleasure was the classic "Basket Case". If for no other reason, I can call it a "classic" as it's more than 20 years old. (I keed!) Latham and Hassan weigh in on a film they've never experienced before and I put my two cents in as well. And you have to hear why Jeff loves this film and feels it has earned it seat at the horror classic table. To see and enjoy the posters we discuss in this episode, jump to http://cinementalpod.com
So, it seems we've broken the first rule of fight club. (And technically, the second as well.) We've gone and talked about Fight Club, one of David Fincher's mid-career masterworks. Our guest, transmedia mogul and Starlight Runner CEO, Jeff Gomez demanded we do so, and we responded with a resounding "Okay!" We're always up for a dissection of a Fincher film, so it seemed a no-brainer. We also discuss a bunch of great posters made for the film's release as well as a selection of fan-made alt posters as usual on our "Down the Tubes" segment. See those posters below the player. Enjoy!

Cult properties have become mass entertainment. Marvel’s success bringing comic book characters to the big screen and the resurgence of the space opera suggest niche properties may no longer mean marginalized audience appeal. This panel explores the politics, pitfalls, and potentials of exploiting niches and mainstreaming once marginalized properties. How do you stay true to the few but build properties attractive to the many? What role do fans play in developing cult properties for success? Is it profitable to build a franchise on the intense interest of the few and relying on Long Tail economics? Are smaller audiences viable in the short term, or do we need to rethink the length of time for a reasonable return? Panelists: Danny Bilson, Transmedia Creator; Jeff Gomez, Starlight Runner; Jesse Alexander, Heroes; Gordon Tichell, Walden Media
