Happy Thanksgiving! What a time to be a kaiju fan? Not only do we get a show on Apple TV+ featuring A-listers like Kurt Russell and John Goodman, we also live in a world where companies like U.S. Toys, Marusan, One Up, and many more are releasing amazing sofubi and collectibles on a near weekly basis! In this installment of YHS on Monster Island, Jacob Walsh and Jay Key talk give their thoughts on the first three episodes of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and if the more grounded approach that we saw in Godzilla (2014) is effective after so many of the subsequent issues went in a different direction? Which of the timelines has been most compelling? And what about those new kaiju? However, beyond the media, fans in Japan are getting ready for Tsuburaya Con 2023 at the Tokyo Dome this weekend - and all of the heavy hitters in the world of vinyl toys and other kaiju goodies will be there. Jay showcases some of the most anticipated drops from the world of ultra kaiju! And we have pick ups- oh, do we have pick ups?!?! From vintage Popy to gigantic Spiral Studios statues to Marmit Parababy purchases, the hosts highlight some heavy hitting sofubi! Also, has Jake seen Shin Kamen Rider yet?

YHS on Monster Island takes a look at the pioneering tokusatsu show, 1966's Ultra Q, and ranks its top ten offerings. Tsuburaya's initial entry into the Ultra series kickstarted a tokusatsu boom that would take over Japanese airwaves only a few years later, giving way to the iconic Ultraman, Ultraseven, and many more. But this unique and ground-breaking series gave fans of kaiju, seijin, and just flat out good storytelling some memorable episodes, characters, and - of course- monsters. Join Jun, Yuri, Ippei, Garamon, Gomess, Peguila, Kanegon, and many more as YHS on Monster Island presents "The Top 10 Episodes of Ultra Q".

Three different versions of this movie exist, and we talk about every single one of 'em on this episode! It's a horror history course, and it's almost time for class! Director Sam Sherman's company INDEPENDENT-INTERNATIONAL PICTURES CORP purchased an unfinished 80 minute film called DYING DAY from special FX artist Brett Piper, which was re-shot over and over and over until becoming RAIDERS OF THE LIVING DEAD. It's not fair that Godzilla vs. Gigan gets ALL of the 50th anniversary love! There was another little Toho project that came out in 1972 - a co-production with Tsuburaya - that deserves some respect: Daigoro vs. Goliath! Okay, maybe deserving respect might be too much for this film - but hey, it...uh...exists. And "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and his co-conspirator, Jay Key, are here to discuss this oft forgotten kaiju gem. From monster-sized toilets to excessive alcohol consumption to domestic violence, it has everything one expects in a kids' movie! However, the most compelling thing about Daigoro vs. Goliath is what it COULD have been! In addition to the film, Jake and Jay discuss Kurt Russell in the Monsterverse, weekly pick-ups, Shin Ultraman's international release news, and some new reveals by Marusan for the Godzilla Store. Please leave a positive review wherever you choose to consume YHS on Monster Island!

Frankenstein Conquers the World! But does he really? On this episode of YHS on Monster Island, “The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu” Jacob Walsh and Jay Key take a swing at the 1965 Toho release, Frankenstein Conquers the World. It has all of the makings of a golden era classic – Honda directing, Tsuburaya doing his thang, an Ifukube score, and cast chock full o' regulars like Kumi Mizuno, Yoshia Tsuchiya, Tadao Takashima, and Takashi Shimura, and even good ol' Nick Adams drops in to lead the way! On top of that, you have an alternative ending that makes absolutely no sense! But does all that, mixed with an original interpretation of the Frankenstein story lead to a top tier film? Tune in to find out what our intrepid duo of daikaiju devotees have to say about when Frankie goes to Japan! Long before the South Korean film industry was putting out groundbreaking and critically beloved flicks like The Host and Parasite, they bestowed upon the world such epic daikaiju dumpster fires as Yongary, Monster from the Deep (1967) and War of the God Monsters (1985). The question isn't if the "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and "The Mayor of Toku Toy Town" Jay Key enjoyed these two movies - it's if they survived them. Though Yongary's historical significance on the Korean film world is legitimate and undeniable, it provides little shelter from itchy monster dances, rectal bleeding, poorly hidden flame throwers, and thinly veiled metaphors regarding South Korea's geo-political views following the Korean War. It helps redefine the word "boring". But less than twenty years later, the world was treated to what can only be described as the cinematic interpretation of insanity in its purest form. Stock footage Tsuburaya monsters described as "dinosaurs". Bones that may or may not cause children to get sick. Uncomfortable emotional and physical abuse. A sociopathic pre-teen. And that baby scene...oh, that baby scene. Maybe there was a reason this film was lost. In addition to traversing the landscape of South Korean kaiju, Jake and Jay discuss some hot news items such as the approaching Godzilla Day and the two huge announcements - the official Toho short, Godzilla vs. Hedorah (in honor of Hedorah's 50th anniversary), and Super7's tease of their next reveal (the first wave of Ultimates, maybe?). The two hosts also compare pick-ups; Jake flexes his cute credentials with a "pumpkin" Negora and LitGodzi Space Godzilla cup...Jay battles back with a cool MaxToyCo Ultraman and a set of Eiji Tsuburaya 100th anniversary finger puppets from Yutaka.
This week Terry and Paul pretend to be art snobs and sneak into a private viewing of 'The Last Tsuburaya' and learn that just because you can buy something, doesn't mean you should, and then they go behind bars to meet Mr. Elmer Strick, a man who's only friends are his spiders in 'Okay, I'll Bite.'

Byrd, Matt and Kevin discuss the low budget South Korean kaiju oddity, War of the God Monsters! This obscure film uses stock footage from various Tsuburaya kaiju tv shows to string together a story about global warming awakening angry dinosaurs and the perpetually angry scientist who warns the masses. The film was virtually lost until the recent blu-ray release from SRS Cinema. In addition to our review, we discuss the movie's origin and reputation, the pre-2000s Korean film industry, "cut and paste" film making and more. But first, we give our first impressions of Godzilla: Singular Point so far, our thoughts on Legendary's talks for a Son of Kong film, and Byrd and Matt review the Godzilla vs. Kong "Ultimate Showdown" energy drink. Relax and enjoy the conversation!

Eu sou o Marc. Tsuburaya!

In what would have made an amazing 1970s Tsuburaya produced tokusatsu sci-fi series, a group of Malaysian students would have a series of increasingly disturbing run-ins with what became a fleet of tiny UFOs and their even more diminutive, laser gun toting occupants who seemed hell-bent on invading of sovereign Earth soil. Back to Japan for this episode! We look at two movies from the father of Godzilla, Mr. Ishiro Honda, starting off with 1963's Atragon which tells a complicated story of toxic masculinity and intrigue. Featuring a miraculous flying sub that is sent to defend the earth from a lost undersea kingdom that has it's eyes set on conquering the world! It is delightfully cheesy and full of signature Tsuburaya effects. We follow that up with 1969's Latitude Zero, which raises the bar in every conceivable direction...this movie is INSANE in the very best ways. We have hidden societies, miraculous machines, incredible cross-breeding surgeries, lasers, and some impossibly skimpy outfits...oh, and also jet belts!!! This is pure, nutty, gold! Let us know what you thought of the show by writing to flickersfrom@yahoo.com or flickersfrom@gmail.com. You can also send us messages on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!
Jessica and Chris star 2019 off with ... catching up on everything they missed at the end of 2018. Tsuburaya is trying to get Ultraman exposure in the US. For the third and last of our three part look at the beginnings of Tsuburaya's Ultraman franchise, Byrd, Matt, and guest host Eric discuss the third series, Ultraseven! This was the last show that Eiji Tsuburaya would be directly involved with. Ultraseven was focused more on hard science fiction and saw our hero fighting off different alien invaders each episode. It took a much more earnest approach and focused more on story and theme than it did on being a simple monster mash. Arguably the most critically praised show in the Ultra-series, Ultraseven has a lot to offer. Tune in and enjoy the chat!
For the second part of our three part look at the beginning of Tsuburaya's Ultra-franchise, Byrd, Matt and guest host Eric look at the original Ultraman! After the success of Ultra Q, Tsuburaya quickly got to work on a follow up, which introduced the world to the visitor from the Land of Light! Ultraman quickly became Japan's first real superhero phenomenon! Listen as we talk about the history of this classic show and discuss our favorite episodes, characters, and monsters. How does the original Ultraman hold up after 50+ years? Listen to us sound off!
We're finally taking our first dive into Tsuburaya's Ultra-franchise! On this first episode of a three-part podcast series, Byrd, Matt, and guest host Eric discuss the very first Ultra-show, Ultra Q! Before Ultraman took Japanese airwaves by storm, Tsuburaya combined the Twilight Zone with the kaiju genre and gave us the delightfully weird Ultra Q! This classic series is still beloved to this day and spawned many of the most iconic Ultra kaiju. Listen as we trace back to the origins of Tsuburaya Productions and how they developed a hit TV show in the middle of Japan's "kaiju boom." This series would go on to birth Ultraman and the subsequent shows and films, ushering in a countless amount of live action kaiju and superhero programs. But first, we have some listener mail, including a follow up to our Blue Christmas episode. Enjoy!
Byrd and Matt are joined by guest host and Kamen Rider fan Eric to discuss the cyborg-grasshopper warrior’s output in the 1990s. Commonly given as the easiest entry point for newbies getting into the Kamen Rider series, the franchise’s output in the 90s consisted of the films Shin Kamen Rider (1992), Kamen Rider Zo (1993), and Kamen Rider J (1994), along with the short films Kamen Rider SD, Ultraman vs. Kamen Rider, and Kamen Rider World. Most of these projects heavily involved acclaimed tokusatsu auteur Keita Amemiya in some way or another. Since Byrd and Matt are total KR newbs, Eric helps explain the origins of the franchise, and then we give our thoughts on the shorts and movies. But first we have listener mail, as well as news about the Japanese Godzilla General Election poll, early reviews of Godzilla: Monster Planet and the announcement of that film’s sequel, Tsuburaya’s recent court victory, and the Rampage trailer!
In this exhilarating episode, Jessica and Chris break down the new Kong Skull Island trailer. The news that Legendary is creating a writers room for their Kaiju series. Tsuburaya is making an Ultraman Orb film. Finally, Chris goes off on his love for the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series by Boom Studios. It's one of a breed they just don't make anymore, so download and give it a listen! Be sure to stick around after the outro for the BUNTA SUPERCUT!Feedback for this show can be sent to: earthdestructiondirective@yahoo.comEarth Destruction Directive can be found on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/#!/earthdestruction.directive Please rate and review the show on iTunes!
