Hey pals, Maggie is back from India and we're behind the mics once again. We kick off with a debrief of Mags' incredible trip and discuss Travis Kelce's digital footprint. Next, a report has revealed that the world's richest 1% emit as much carbon as the poorest 66%. This news was released in the same week as a young Taylor Swift fan tragically passed away at the Eras concert in Rio DeJaneiro due to the unseasonable heat and negligence of the venue. TikTok comedian, Matt Rife, has turned on his majority female audience this week after opening up his Netflix special, Natural Selection with a domestic violence “joke”. We discuss why he'd turn on the people who made him, the genre of ‘cancelled comedians', and why women fans are the best fans to have. We reference this article by Jared Richards for the ABC, titled, The Rise and Immediate, Potentially Strategic Downfall of Matt Rife Two friends have gone mega-viral on TikTok after airing both sides of a friendship fallout on the app. Former best friends Kelly Kim and Joanna Lee both took to the app to set the record straight on the actions and ghosting that occurred after Joanna was accused of flirting with Kelly's boyfriend. We chat about the virality of this drama, why we love to dissect things when we have no skin in the game, and if actual drama is the new reality TV. This week, we both recommend SALTBURN. Honestly, just go see it. That's all for now! Jas and Mags xo Katie Zhou created our fab cover art and India Raine is our wonderful editor and composer of our jingle. This episode features a conversation with Joanna Lee Williams, associate professor at the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology at Rutgers University. Joanna and Jason cover how young adolescents are impacted by bias-motivated violence, why media surrounding events like Charlottesville amplify this type of violence, and how these events have a cumulative effect on young people, especially young people of color, in their formative years. Professor Williams recently served on the academic committee to develop the Promise of Adolescence, a report from the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Math. She also recently released some of her own research on the reaction of young adolescents to the 2017 Unite the Right white supremacy rally in Charlottesville, Virginia and what it may tell us about engaging middle schoolers in conversations about race. I’m your host, Nicole Delacroix and together, we will be investigating stories about the weird, wonderful, unexplained, eerie, scary and down-right unbelievable. There will be tales of ghosts, murder, supernatural beings and unexplained mysteries. So, sit back, grab your favorite drink, relax and prepare to be transported to today's dark Enigma.... And on today’s Dark enigma we’re looking into a mysterious death, an exorcism and maybe a conspiracy? Who knows what lurks in today’s episode? Oh right, me lol. So tonight’s episode is a two for, that’s right I’m hitting something normal and then a short story on something else for you. Hey, I’m bored stuck at home so sue me. Alright then, with that said, we will still be playing our drinking game and as you know, the drinking game is only for those of us that are quarantined at home and have nowhere else to go tonight, like you can go anywhere. The choice of libation is yours, so choose your poison accordingly… Alright, now for the game part how about every time I say demons that will be a single shot and every time I say Korea, that will be a double shot. Now that the business end is out of the way we can jump headfirst into today’s dark enigma… and the Mysterious Deadly Exorcism of Joanna Lee and for today’s double feature did Dean Koontz predict the Wuhan Virus back in his 1981 thriller? So let’s jump in my heathens.. For as long as human beings have believed in demons there have been ways to try and stop them. Accounts of demons and demonic possession in one form or another can be found across the world throughout a wide range of disparate cultures, and the means of warding them off just as varied as the people who believe in them. One of the methods most firmly lodged into the public consciousness through countless horror movies and their tropes is that of the exorcism, wherein a priest or some other holy person goes toe to toe with the dark forces beyond our understanding. Yet in this battle there are often casualties, those exorcisms that go awry and derail to descend into madness and death. This is one of those stories.

Every week Twisted Two's dives into a pair of uniquely terrifying stories that are worthy of a more in-depth look. For this week, we focus on the deadly exorcism of Joanna Lee and the mystery of the Crystal Skulls. Get ready for Scary Mysteries, Twisted Two’s. Exorcism of Joanna Lee Exorcisms are usually performed in the hopes of banishing some evil spirit, but sometimes, it can turn deadly. To understand what happened to the tragic exorcism of Joanna Lee (also known as Keum Ok Lee), it’s best to understand the life of her pastor, Luke Lee (also known as Yong Bum Lee.) Despite having the same last name, the two aren’t related. Luke Lee first arrived in New Zealand in 1994. He left behind a wife and children in Seoul, Korea, including his various shady business dealings. Luke entered New Zealand using a student visa, studying at the Assemblies of God Advanced Ministry of Training Centre. Here, he met his new wife, Joyce Lee - a Korean that has settled in Auckland. After he completed his training, he went to London before returning to Korea, where he was arrested and imprisoned for fraud for one year. After he got out, he said he heard voices in his head. It told him to return to New Zealand, particularly in Mt. Roskill, and start his church. Crystal Skulls Mystery Beautifully crafted, shiny and stunning - the crystal skulls have long fascinated both modern and ancient man. Although there’s an air of mystery attached to them, they’re actually quite common. Thousands have been created in China, Brazil, and Germany but there are a select few that have caused controversy among scientists, archeologists, museum officials, and spiritualists. There are almost a dozen rare crystal skulls held in public and private collections that are said to be special. Some of these are made crystal clear, while others are crafted from smoky or colored quartz. There are small skulls, while others are human-sized and come in exquisite detail. These rare crystal skulls are said to come from Mexico or Central America

Composer and self-described “musical anthropologist” Tan Dun (perhaps best familiar for his Oscar-winning score to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) creates works that bridge time, place and culture through the fusion of ancient and avant-garde sounds Celebrating the vocal, instrumental, and environmental sounds of the remote Chinese countryside, Tan explores the minority cultures of Hunan Province, where he was born, and brings it into play with modern instruments and orchestrations. Expanding on the video and audio field recordings gathered for his multimedia concerto The Map, a Concerto for Cello, Video, and Orchestra, Tan and scholar Joanna Lee discuss the vanishing musical cultures of ethnic minorities in western Hunan and reflect on the creative challenges of preserving cultural legacies while creating new music fusing traditional, indigenous and contemporary sounds.
Despite China’s long musical history, Chinese orchestras are relatively new. The push for developing a distinctly Chinese performing arts repertoire came with the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. In the years after, Chinese orchestras mirroring the operational style of Western orchestras, such as having a baton-waving conductor and divisions of instrument families, began to form. Chinese orchestras initially focused on indigenous folk music, but in the last twenty years, they have developed and performed new works, and their four sections-- bowed-strings, plucked-strings, wind and percussion—have been augmented with new instruments with lower pitch ranges to balance the high pitches of the more traditional instruments. Join scholar Joanna Lee as she guides classroom audiences through the sounds and structures of the traditional Chinese orchestra.
