Today, I am delighted to be joined by fellow decision-making professional Melina Moleskis. I came across Melina via Christian Hunt, who I've had on the show a couple of times now. Melina and I featured in a two-part series on decision-making in Christian's Human Risk podcast Melina is the founder of Meta Decisions, a consultancy that leverages decision and behavioural science to help people and organizations make better decisions. She has a PhD in managerial science, an MBA from NYU Stern, and a bachelor's degree in mathematics.  And she takes all that training and applies it in very useful and interesting ways. You will hear a lot of that reflected in this wonderful conversation that covered so much interesting ground from: what the decision and behavioural sciences are; the concept of indecisiveness and how to overcome that; dealing with complexity documenting decisions -This is something that is actually quite overlooked at times: “Kill criteria” the state of decision education ·      And we even get into some discussion about sport and its role in decision-making as a microcosm of good decisions. Melina has a great perspective on that because she's also a former competitive basketball player. Dr. Annie Duke is a former professional poker player, an author, speaker, and consultant in the decision-making space. She is the author of the national bestseller, Thinking in Bets, and, the topic of today's interview, 2022's Quit: The Power of Knowing When to Walk Away. “Quitting's for the weak” reverberates through today's culture. Of course, quitting just because something is hard is not a good idea. However, we don't tend to evaluate whether what we spend our time on is worth “buckling down” for. We highlight the journey, not the destination when it's really the destination that we should be focused on. In our last episode (116), with Dr. Adam Alter, we mentioned Dr. Angela Duckworth's Grit and Dr. Annie Duke's Quit. Having already dived into Dr. Duckworth's work with her in episode 21, I wanted to hear what might initially seem like a conflicting view.Topics:Is quitting a counterargument or a compliment to grit? Strategies for assessing when to quit"Explore and exploit" mindset: how does that connect to quit and grit? How to apply exploring/exploiting seasons in life"What books have had an impact on you?""What advice do you have for teenagers?"Bio:Annie loves to dive deep into decision-making under uncertainty. Her latest obsession is on the topic of quitting. In particular, she is on a mission to rehabilitate the term and get people to be proud of walking away from things. Annie is an author, speaker, and consultant in the decision-making space, as well as Special Partner focused on Decision Science at First Round Capital Partners, a seed stage venture fund. Annie and Cass talk about how we are more likely to believe things we hear repeatedly, even when they're not true, and how “nudges” can positively influence our choices without us realizing it. Cass also sheds light on the surprising impact group polarization has on everyday decision-making, including the tendency of juries to impose harsher sentences collectively than any individual jurors would choose alone. This has big implications for the group decisions we make every day at work, at home, and in our families!

Annie Duke is a World Series of Poker champion, having won more than $4 million in tournament poker. In 2004, she won the World Series of Poker bracelet and is the only woman to have won the World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions.  In 2009, Annie was a contestant on Celebrity Apprentice, where she took 2nd and raised more than $700,000 for her chosen charity. She is the author of Thinking in Bets, a national bestseller, and Quit: The Power of Knowing When to Walk Away. Annie was awarded a National Science Foundation Fellowship to study Cognitive Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, and she recently completed her PhD. She is also the co-founder of The Alliance for Decision Education, a non-profit whose mission is to improve lives by empowering students through decision skills education.  In this episode, we discuss the following: Quitting isn't a bad thing. With whatever we're doing, don't be afraid to say, “I don't love it” or “I loved it, but I no longer do” or “I still love it, but I think there might be this other thing that I love more.” All decisions are probabilistic, so it's important to continually sample.Try a bunch of stuff, figure out what you like, and then keep trying a bunch of stuff. It's hard for us to leave paths without feeling like we've failed. Luckily for Annie, she was forced to try other things when she got sick during her PhD program. And then sampling poker led her to becoming a world champion. Then she realized she liked writing books, giving talks, and running a foundation. Just because something survives a fact check doesn't mean it's true…true in the sense that it's the right model of the facts. If the stock market drops 3,000 points in one day, people might say it's the largest drop in history. But that would only be true in terms of total points, not true in terms of percentage. Given that every decision we make is a forecast, the quality of our decisions are only as good as the way that we've modeled the information that is inputted into the forecast. Annie has developed two questions that are fantastic for modeling facts:  “Out of how many?” and “In comparison to what?” By asking ourselves these two questions we will improve our models and make Annie happy. In this conversation, Annie and I discuss how to set kill criteria for yourself and frame goals in more helpful ways to know when quitting is the best answer. Key Points Kenny Rogers was right; professional poker players know that a big part of success is quitting approximately 75% of the time. “Quit while you're ahead” is often poor advice since we tend to quit too early when good things are happening. On the contrary, we tend to quit too late when we've accumulated sunk cost. Determine kill criteria in advance when you're not as likely to be swayed by the emotions of the moment. The best criteria contain both a state and a date. Find someone who loves you but doesn't care about your feelings. Trust and permission are essential to open up these kinds of conversations. Annie Duke is the bestselling author of Thinking in Bets and How to Decide. Her new book, Quit, is going to be the subject of a lot of our conversation today. Annie is a corporate speaker and consultant in the decision-making space. She's also a former professional poker player, where she won more than $4 million in tournament poker before retiring from the game in 2012. We'll talk about all of the quitting that Annie has done in her life, and a lot of the origins of this book come from learning poker and learning how important it is to know “when to fold ‘em.” She's also the co-founder of the Alliance for Decision Education, a non-profit whose mission it is to improve lives by empowering students through decision skill education. At her core, Annie really loves research, education, and not just learning, but also teaching.   Annie had a number of amazing insights during our conversation. Some of them include: “I think sabbaticals are actually really helpful” (13:35). “It's very hard to make decisions when you're in it, when you're actually facing down the decision” (13:45). “We equate quitting with giving up or failing” (14:45). “That's the hardest thing to quit. ‘If I quit this, then who am I?'” (16:15). “When we're actually engaged in something, when we're pursuing a particular goal, it's very hard for us to see very clearly what the other opportunities are that might be available to us” (16:55). “We tend not to do a lot of reevaluation of why we're doing what we're doing or whether we really enjoy it or whether it aligns with our values when we're in it once we've already started it” (17:15). “The pandemic involuntarily created sabbaticals for people” (18:40). “Pivoting is quitting” (19:10). “The word ‘quit' is so odious to us that we really like to bubble wrap it” (19:35). “The definition of quit is ‘stopping something that you have started'” (20:00). “It's a good thing to quit things when you discover that they're not working for you anymore” (20:40). “Just like any decision you make, [quitting] is not permanent” (21:20). “If you discover something that you do isn't working, why are you afraid to say that you're quitting?” (23:00). “The fear of regret… stops us from quitting” (26:00). “I've quit a lot of stuff, but I'm also very gritty” (31:45). “I stopped tying my identity so closely to what I did” (33:00). “I've spent my whole life thinking about decision making under uncertainty. It's the thing I'm most curious about” (34:00). “Famous women are treated different than famous men” (41:45). “I'm very good at quitting things that I've written in a lot better way than I was when I wrote [my first book]” (1:00:25). “I've really embraced the power of narrative to bring to life academic concepts” (1:00:40). “Talks are just teaching. Consulting is teaching” (1:03:45). “I come to life when I'm teaching people” (1:04:00). “I often discover through teaching that I'm totally full of sh*t, which is the best thing ever” (1:04:30). “I wish that idea of don't have a plan B would go away” (1:20:45).   Additionally, for all of the information you need on Annie, including links to her books and newsletter, you can check out her website here. As part of our Best of Trending in Ed Series, we return to episode 202 of Trending in Ed from the Summer of 2019 where Mike Palmer interviews Annie Duke about her book, Thinking in Bets: Making Smarter Decisions When We Don't Have All The Facts. We're “all-in” this week, as we welcome Annie Duke, author of Thinking In Bets and retired poker pro, to the show. Annie begins by sharing the long, winding path she took to become an author and expert in decision science. From her time as a PhD student in cognitive science to her introduction to poker as a novice to her inspiration to write her books, Annie provides great detail on all of the influences throughout her life that have come together to write Thinking In Bets.  We also dive into the non-profit, The Alliance for Decision Education, that Annie co-founded in 2012 and discuss how she hopes to push decision education at scale to millions of students in K12. How do we get decision-making wrong? How often do we worry about the result, see Pete Carroll's play-calling in Super Bowl XLIX, rather than the process that led to the decision? If we were to teach students the basics of good decision-making, how might this improve their ability to decide quickly and adapt to a variety of environments and novel contexts critical to learning and the future of work?  We discuss all that and more. So pull up a seat, ante up, and join us for an engaging conversation from back in the simpler days of 2019!  Subscribe to Trending in Ed wherever you get your podcasts. In this first part, we discuss the concept of pre-mortems, an approach of looking at the outcome of our decision and if it were to fail, why we think it would fail. It's an approach that's designed to overcome groupthink and avoid the fact that pessimists are really unpopular in group decision-making sessions. However, recent research has shown that they don't always help people and groups change their mind. We look at pre-mortems, prospective hindsight, legitimizing dissent, self-serving bias and pre-parade or backcasts to see how this tool can affect and improve decision-making given the most recent academic literature.

Combatting Burnout Let's face it. Being an educator can be an incredibly daunting task. There's constantly a demand to "do more" with fewer resources, and COVID has only compounded the stressful work environment in the classroom.  In this episode of Class Dismissed, a former teacher turned burnout coach, Gabby Lupin, discusses mindfulness and exercise techniques that may help prevent or at least mitigate educator burnout.  Lupin believes it's helpful to have mindfulness and exercise sessions with fellow educators. That's why she's spent the last few years building an online community of educators that use her techniques to work through the tough times. Gabby Lubin, CEO & Founder of Spark by Gabby (Courtesy of Spark by Gabby) "You don't have to go about it alone. "You're with your peers. You're taking classes from other educators," says Lupin. "And they're helping support and figure out how to apply this work to your daily life." For example, one mindfulness instructor at SparkByGabby.com lightly calls about something she may have experienced in the class recently. So those involved in the session can apply those mindfulness techniques in their lives as a teacher.  To hear our entire conversation with Gabby, listen to Episode 214 of the Class Dismissed Podcast on iTunes or your favorite podcasting app to learn more about Decision Education. Other Alliance for Decision Education Tools Hardgrove and her colleagues at the Alliance for Decision Education offer a few different programs and resources to educators. HabitWise When students dream about their careers and life goals, they must understand how habits can turn their dreams into reality or get in the way. HabitWise helps middle and high school students achieve their goals by teaching them how to create and track beneficial habits and crush problematic patterns. FIND ANNIE ONLINE Website: https://www.annieduke.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/annieduke LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/annie-duke-30ab2b5/ QUOTES [12:25] "Betting is basically saying I have some set of limited resources that I can invest in to and I'm choosing among options where how that option turns out is not deterministic. It's probabilistic." [15:09] "...And whichever one you choose is just a prediction of which one's more likely to produce a happier version of you in the future." [16:25] "We're living in a probabilistic world, meaning that there are very few decisions that you can make that are guaranteed to have one single outcome." [20:14] "But presidential campaigns actually happen over quite a long period of time...Can you think of anything? Where in real time, people are analyzing the decisions that are being made more than a national presidential election." [26:10] "Our brains really like to make a create a narrative that makes sense where one thing leads to another and kind of an orderly fashion. We really aren't comfortable with randomness." [28:19] "So luck is intervening between the decisions that you make, the option that you choose, and the particular outcome that you happen to observe." [32:43] "I also don't know a lot of stuff. The way to solve for that is to go explore the universe of stuff that I don't know, and to explore that in a really objective way. Where I'm kind of like maximizing my ability to run into information that is different than the things that I believe to be true,." [39:40] "Well, smart people are just better at spinning narratives. They're better at looking at a set of data and interpreting that data to fit the model that they already have. That's just why it's just like this kind of narrative spinning that's kind of going on in our heads." [01:01:58] "It's not that imagining failure causes failure. It's that imagining failure causes success, because if you imagine failure, you can see all the obstacles that might be lying in your path and then you can actually do something about them before you run into the obstacle" SHOW NOTES [00:01:32] Guest introduction [00:03:00] How Annie became the “Duchess of Poker” [00:04:09] What Annie's hometown was like [00:07:44] What high school was like for Annie [00:09:59] How Annie's experiences led to writing her books [00:12:07] What are bets, what are decisions and what's the relationship between them? [00:16:06] The perils of “resulting” [00:17:45] Why you shouldn't equate decision quality with outcome quality [00:20:14] Decisions and elections [00:24:19] Why our brains are not built for rationality [00:26:10] Why our brains need narrative [00:30:50] Your beliefs have two major weaknesses [00:35:48] Why being smarter makes you more susceptible to motivated reasoning [00:40:48] The decision multiverse [00:44:29] Your good outcomes aren't always a result of good decision making [00:48:10] How Thinking in Bets changed my life and a case study of Bayesian psychology in the job search process [00:53:42] Dealing with things that are not in your control [00:55:46] The pre-mortem [00:59:01] The power of negative visualization [01:03:36] The influence of Stoic philosophy on Annie's work [01:04:02] A dude in a basement has a hypothesis… [01:04:29] Positive thinking and the Reticular Activating System [01:08:07] The Alliance for Decision Education. [01:09:56] We're not teaching kids the things they really need to know [01:14:41] It's one hundred years in the future - what do you want to be remembered for?
